April launch for Android 2.4? New Xperia range out of date on arrival?

AndroidThe naming/numbering system for Android has become increasingly complex since the arrival of Honeycomb 3.0 for tablets. Now we have word from Pocket-Lint who say that Android 2.4 will be landing earlier than expected in April. However, Android 2.4 won’t be a new landmark release, it will just be a refresh of Gingerbread bringing dual-core app support (designed for Honeycomb) to single-core handsets.

If true, it could mean that the upcoming Sony Ericsson Xperia smartphones may very well be lagging behind on the Android OS front even before they launch. The Xperia arc, Xperia Play and Xperia Neo will run Android 2.3 Gingerbread on release. However SE has said that it plans to move much faster with Android updates in the future. It looks like they may be put to the test sooner than expected.

Update: As we were reminded in the comments, the Xperia arc was already spotted running Android 2.4. At the time this was put down to as a “misconfiguration” error, but if Pocket-Lint’s story is true, Sony Ericsson is probably on top of this as we speak.

  • since none of them are going to be dual core I doubt they will even bother updating to 2.4

  • Why should the Arc be any different to the existing SE devices? Heaven forbid they should make a device that’s capable of being updated in a timely fashion. Or even one that’s actually current at the time of release.

No doubt there’ll be a promise of an update “soon”.

  • WTF?!?!?! the new xperias and Nexus S are the only devices starting with Android 2.3….. all other will start with 2.2 and are definitely out of date….

  • since manyy of the other manufacturers top phones are running 2.2 and 2.3 and this is just released obviously its not going to be on the sony ericsson phones or a lot of phones released this year, what a stupid attempted attack on SE

how can xperia arc be behind when 2.4 isn’t even released yet?
should SE travel to the future, get the source code, make adjustments to it for arc, and then come back in time, and release it with 2.4?

srsly, check yourself before you wreck yourself!

The source article is talking about Android 2.4 heading to a Viewsonic smartphone in April, the same month that the Xperia arc & others are due for release. Obviously, manufacturers like Viewsonic, SE, HTC will have an idea of the Android timeline that is not currently for public consumption.

It’s not an attack on SE at all. If Pocket-Lint’s sources are true, then the post is just stating the obvious. Given SE’s track record in this area, it’s worth highlighting.

  • please, no phone that will be released in the 1st quater will have 2.4. HTC is therefore behind aswell. You just trying an attempt to sabotage SE’s reputation further and to cause further customers to be so they can post here, nice try though. Are view sonic a major player?

Lets see when HTC wil get 2.4, 2.3 has barely been out that long. You are misleading customers with type of talk

It’s all make sense now! Remember there was a video with 2.4 on the Arc!? So it was not a misconfiguration that SE said….

  • Jymdman

If I understand this correct, it’s the opposite. 2.4 will ensure apps designed for dual-core (3.0) to work on single core cpu’s…

Isn’t anyone upset that the flagship Arc has no front camera?

You’re absolutely right. However, it’s definitely worth pointing out this article from a few weeks back: http://www.slashgear.com/sony-ericsson-blame-xperia-arc-2-4-leaks-on-misconfiguration-11125614/

My x10 will have 2.4 sooner thanks to J&Z from XDA

This should not have even been posted. It’s ridiculous. Let the update come out then see what SE does. Then Post.

  • yes, but SE started making arc a long time ago, and it doesn’t make sense for them to stop everything and do it all over again.

i know SE is slow on updates (i own x10 myself), but what you said just didn’t make any sense to me.

  • Chronosnake

I what I find funny is if this was any forum this would be classed as flamebait.
Just wait until details are 100%, no other company is shipping with 2.4 either, just like most companies didnt have 2.2 or 2.3 and people was demanding it for the X10, give SE time to get things sorted, and if SE don’t launch with the new update then its understandable anyway, u can’t expect SE to hold back their products in order to put 2.4 in last minute, just expect the update if don’t launch with it.
I really think Google should slow down on the updates, they update more then SONY does with the PS3 and people say the PS3 has way to many updates, Google should just do big updates instead.

The writer is very funny. he is speaking about 2.3 as an outdated os as if all other handsets are on 2.4 already!!

Wake up please this is not 1.6 this is 2.3 the latest os from google so far! And the current version that is on google’s phone nexus S. So no need to be sarcastic by saying that the Xperia line will be lagging behind. Seriously, it’s not funny! A lot of people are angry because of the lagging that happened in the past and they are looking forward for a new start. Since SE will be the first manufacture that offers 2.3 out of the box.

    Enough said!

  • Anonymous

Exactly well said! Making SE looks outdated right now is plain stupid! Because most of the other manufacturers will be running 2.2 anyway! And like one of the people said here, don’t expect sony to hold back in order to wait every new update from google, even though the next update may only target the dual core cpu’s ha!!

People who write in the blog should have more responsibility before posting nonsense!

  • Anonymous

Well said bro, it seems the people writing in this blog miss the fights that are in the original blog. So, they decided to act stupid by posting this nonsense that has nothing to do with reality.

Like you mentioned, a lot of people are still hurt for what happened with the X10 and the outdated updates. And now when SE are trying to make it right, some people still act so foolish! What a shame that this is a SE blog, when even the writers bash the brand.

  • Hotmail

I just dont belive them !!! i won’t buy it

  • sp34k

wtf is this flaming the writer deal ??

Sony has a history with this kind of scene. they lag behind. he clearly states that “… Xperia smartphones may …”. MaY! as in, MAY NOT. he even gives SE a break (too sweet, imo) and states “SE has said that it plans to move much faster”. so wtf

    good post, and good point.

  • Felix

SERIOUSLY, what is the big deal about a front camera!? LIKE REALLY! *bang head on desk*

  • Mezmez2010

thats true, the problem is google are trying to catch up with Apple so they are constantly updating, its good though i feel once they are really up there they will slow them down somewhat
