Sony Ericsson now says no official decision made re: Android ICS

Android ICSThis morning we reported on news on Sony Ericsson supposedly confirming that Android Ice Cream Sandwich (ICS) would hit the 2011 range of Xperia handsets. The company has since backtracked with an official statement on the matter to SoMobile:

When it comes to future platforms of the Android OS, we will make them available to consumers in a timely manner, as long as they improve the user experience and are viable from a hardware point of view.”

So the jury is out right now, but let’s hope Sony Ericsson comes good (as long as the hardware is capable of it).

  • Reminds me how Sony Ericsson handled the Eclair update of the Xperia X10 in 2010. They even promised they’ve learned from that mistake. Seems the’ve been proven wrong …

Just STFU seriously! No other manufacture promised to upgrade to android ice cream and right now se is the best company that are providing timely updates.

So go troll somewhere else and stop being a smart ass because it’s not working anymore. If SE will be providing android 4.0 than that’s stunning, if not than we can’t speak unless we see what other manufacturers will be providing.

Surprise surprise. Sony Ericsson does it again. That retraction just screams of ‘no more updates’. OK, so no other phone manufacturer has promised it yet either, but SE don’t exactly have a good reputation for Android updates.

Also, what with the ‘as long as they improve the user experience’ – 2.2 would have improved the experience on the X10 Mini/Pro but they didn’t bother with that/. I’m running CyanogenMod MiniCM7, Android 2.3.5 on my Mini and it has improved my user experience.

This latest news just stinks of failure. It has 2010 written all over it. I love my X10 Mini. I love it running stock 2.1. After six months I shouldn’t have had to hack it to run a ‘modern’ version of Android. Good luck Arc and Xperia Mini owners in getting a higher version when it hits.

Basharca said it as it is… IF the 2011 Xperias are capable to handle ICS with their hardware i’m sure SE WILL update them….

and the best thing is: because of identical hardware on ALL 2011 devices, ALL OF THEM will get the ICS update or NONE of them…. no one will be left behind anymore and THIS is a much better strategy than last year…..

and although SE is just a small android manufacturer (i think place 4 of the big 6 manufacturers in android) they have the biggest update developement capabilities of all…. HTC, samsung, moto, LG, Dell and so on, they all have to make a seperate firmware on any device out there because of different hardware (CPU, GPU, Memory, RAM and so on) but SE has only ONE base hardware on 9 devices this year…. that means they have just to develope ONE firmware for all devices…. the only hardware differences are 2 different camera modules (8MP Exmor-R and 5MP standard in Xperia Play and Neo V) where they have to include different drivers…. the homescreen is capable on both resolutions: WVGA and HVGA (minis) and different sensor drivers like front facing camera and HW keyboard are also included in ALL devices but deactivated if not needed….

so if there will start a new range next year and ALL devices next year will get Dualcore Processor and are based on the Nozomi, they have to work with 2 editions of firmware to continue support for the 2011 devices…. i think that will not be a big thing for them….

that means 2 years of guaranteed update support for ALL devices with Android as long as the hardware will be capable to handle newer android versions…. this is better than any other manufacturer (only apple provides this support) and they have less work than any other….

    oh my good !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
what is the plan of SE ???
doese thaty thinking about customer care ? it really remaind us that what they have done with us on xperia mini/mini pro .

i just buy xperia play , cause Sonyericsson promised that to support us , they said that they learned from that mistake…

SE started good (( on 2011 )) and keeping update  , I HOPE, WE HOPE that SE keep updating faster that other company ,
just believe that you have best hardware and we, as a customer , need uptade , isurly SE can keep and incrase customers via keeping update , specially on ISC .

i’m sure that you SE can increase customers via this update ,
