in Xperia - Japan Models

A tipster has got in touch to give some further details surrounding the Japanese launch of the Sony Xperia GX (SO-04D) and Xperia SX (SO-05D). Whilst only a vague summer launch was given for both handsets, we now know that the 4.6-inch Xperia GX will launch in July 2012 with the 3.7-inch Xperia SX following a month later.

The images below give a first glimpse on how NTT DoCoMo plan to brand the handsets. The Xperia GX will have a Sony logo that lights up according to the tipster (we’ll wait and see on that one). The Xperia SX will be available in four colours (black, white pink and a funky orange colour too!)

The leaked NTT DoCoMo spec sheet also gives us further colour on specifications. The dimensions of the handset are 131mm x 69mm x 10.5mm and will weigh 127g. The thinnest point of the phone will be just 8.6mm, the thinnest point for the Xperia arc was 8.7mm. It will also come with a 1700mAh capacity battery. Some of these stats were rumoured earlier this week, but were not officially revealed by Sony Mobile. If any Japanese readers want to decipher any other clues below then feel free!

  • Lit logo? Do want in the unlocked version. No carrier branding please.

  • ahomad hosin

can anyone one tell what is written about the CPU?

  • “The Xperia GX will have a Sony logo that lights up”
    ooooooooh… interesting :]

  • Tonyokoro17

I don’t see how any off these phones surpass the xperia s and ion. If anything they are slightly weaker because of lower screen resolution and lack off hdmi port.

  • mountain

    1.5ghz dual core

  • That pictured GX looks slightly different than those official press shot. The back side of the phone is quite different. Look at the position of the camera an led light.

  • bad design like iphone 4s – sx

  • Jake

    S4 1.5ghz

  • Asad Mulla

     thats the SX

  • 29_to_mars

I think the ones we saw in the press shots are honestly the international versions, because the GX in the press shots had the 3.5mm on top but here it has it by the side, I believe SONY would have learnt from that previous mistake in the ARC

  • Asad Mulla

Its a good thing there isn’t much hype about these phones because there not very good

  • Long awaited bluetooth upgrade ..

  • I quite like the Orange SX, it looks great :D !

Can’t wait for the GX’ international release!

I see the 3,5mm connector on the top of the GX in these shots too…

If it has the S4 generation CPU from Qualcom, it’s much more powerful.

  • Bluetooth 3.1? typo?

  • XYZ

Why? Because they’re not quad core? You obviously have no idea how technology works. Snapdragon S4 is just as (if not more) powerful than a Quad Core Cortex A9 setup and much more energy efficient.

  • Steff1_1990

Finaly the orange collor is back walkman style;) but im getting the white gx if it comes to norway

  • TjaldidTjaldid

don’t know why they wouldn’t just put Bt 4.0 in there

  • TjaldidTjaldid

The GX has 720P resolution, They have a Brand New Camera Sensor, and they have an A-15 Dual-Core S4 snapdragon processor that is more powerful than a Quad-Core A-9 Processor like Tegra 3 and Walkman music

I haven’t used an On-screen button Android Phone but I wish they would make the screen longer because I would rather like to have the full 720P rather than sacrificing space for the buttons

  • ohredhk

oh come no one tried the orange color outside japan before?

    Xperia GX
    – Sony FeliCa’s NFC marketed as osaifu keitai (mobile wallet) [ although used for more than just NFC money ] is supported but unclear yet whether Mobile Suica is.- Area Mail is supported [ hopefully that means it is baked in without requiring SP-Mode ]
    – 1-Seg and NotTV are not supported
    – It is not waterproof
    – Of course Wifi Tethering is supported because it is Xi LTE and Xi contracts include Wifi Tethering and Data up to 7GB.

Everything else is standard expected stuff from Sony (based on past Sony Ericsson devices)

Worth noting: The Docomo press conference is on wednesday and will be broadcast on ustream
(that being said, docomo press conferences are far from exciting despite the big stages and high ranking people from docomo who speak)

They should release more official information at that time in 4 days in addition to other devices like the Galaxy S3.

I’d rather purchase this phone because of the industrial design and lack of TouchWiz over the Galaxy S3.

  • ???

  • Coollead

Since when does having an HDMI port = Lack of an HDMI port…?

  • Coollead

The only depressing spec is “Bluetooth 3.1” I wanted 4.0, so I can use the Casio G-Shock with it… blah.

Anyway, as soon as the preorders open at Yamada Denki, I’m there!

  • Vincentius Phang

I prefer huge screen like the one x or galaxy S3. Why’d Sony never use huge screen.

  • Coollead

…. if they did that, you may as well have regular buttons.

  • Is there any issue with importing? Does sony usually sell unlocked phones in Japan? If it is a branded phone, you may not get updates if on an other network right? But if they have an unbranded version, there should be generic updates right?

I am really thinking of importing.

I hope for Bluetooth 4.0 for the international version as it is way more energy efficient

  • surethom

  • Shahzada Shaheryar

  • Awesome

Oh wow .2 inches or .1 inches bigger lol I’d rather stay with 4.6 inches rather than 4.7 or 4.8 as the ppi drops significantly by small increases like that and sony has the bravia engine but if you talking about the sx its for people who don’t eat whoppers because it makes their hands look even smaller

  • Awesome

You better hope its not a typo cause if it is it might imply v2.1

  • JohnBrown

Actually s4 krait has worse performance than quad core a9 IF the s4 is dual core and the a9 is quad core cause a15 is only 40% more faster than a9 so a9s slowness is cured with more cores BUT the s4 will perform better as most apps work only with single or dual core cpus
