Sony Mobile formally announced the Xperia acro S for the Taiwanese market today. Pre-orders for the white, black and pink versions have opened online and the phone will go on sale in early August. The official Sony Store has pegged the handset at NT$17,900 (£380, €487, $597), which gives us the first indication of pricing for this handset and seems reasonably good value given its dust and water resistant features. Pre-orders will also receive a Sony towel, suncream lotion and charging station subject to availability.

A press conference took place to celebrate the launch and we’ve included some pictures and videos below that (ahem) show what kind of situations you could use it in. As a quick reminder, the Xperia acro S has a 1.5Ghz dual-core S3 Snapdragon MSM8260 chipset, a 4.3-inch display with 720 x 1280 resolution, a 12.1MP rear camera, 1.3MP front facing camera, 16GB of internal memory, micro SD memory card support and a 1910mAh capacity battery.

Contacts for a charging dock. This feature isn’t typically present on western smartphones, but it is present as this phone has originally been design as a Japan specific model, and the feature is common on domestic models. Basically, it lets you charge your phone by inserting it into a dock instead of fiddling with flaps and cables.
The charging dock is called ASO39114 and costs around ? 3,000

ooo hey let go play in the pool with our new phones yeah…..hey try calling me under water!!

I’m really surprised that people keep asking that same question.
I was really surprised when I saw all those docks that require you to actually make sure it gets plugged in properly. Is that really rare in other countries to have metal contact points?

I suppose I have 4 or 5 mobile phone docks in Japan that all use those metal contacts for charging or charging+data (all those phones COME WITH the docks) but I suppose I have zero docks or phones with metal contact points from Canada.

I’ve played with the Xperia GX dock a bit and while it seems very usable, the docks with metal contact points are so much easier and smoother to use. The Xperia GX dock is also allegedly around 3000 yen.

  •  in indonesian model have same design….

As long as it goes global by October I’ll be happy, the white version is such a great looking piece of kit.

I don’t really like that charging dock though, I prefer the horizontal type, like the one you get with the Xperia Play.
