Sony Mobile has announced the Xperia VL (SOL21) for Japan’s KDDI network. The Xperia VL is, as you’ve probably guessed, a Japanese variant of the water & dust-resistant Xperia V (LT25i) which is due to launch internationally later this year. It is in fact identical to NTT DoCoMo’s version (Xperia AX) from what we can tell, apart from adding CDMA support.

The Xperia VL will come with the same Japanese-specific features as the Xperia AX including 1-Seg TV tuner, infra-red and mobile wallet. Interestingly, the device is due to launch in early November on KDDI, giving us hope that the Xperia V (LT25i) will also launch during a similar time-frame. Previous reports suggested an early December release for the Xperia V in Europe. See some promo videos for the Xperia VL below.

Features include a 1.5GHz dual-core MSM8960 chipset, 1GB RAM, 16GB internal storage, a 4.3-inch (720 x 1280) display, 13MP camera, VGA front camera, LTE, Bluetooth 4.0, NFC, MHL, 1700mAh battery and microSD memory card support. The Xperia VL will have dimensions of 129 x 65 x 10.8mm and will weigh 120g. The phone will be available in four colours (black, pink, turquoise and white).

Via Sony and KDDI.

My old Sony C905a died and I have no cell phone with me. I’m painfully waiting for the V right now to come out in the USA. What’s the chance it will come state side before December? What’s the chance it will come in turquoise? If it’s not out by then, I’ll just have to go with the TL but I would much prefer the V

  • au also announced the HTC butterfly j, which uses a 1080p display from Sharp and Japan Display, the latter of which Sony is part of.

  • back design looks the same as the chinese version 0.0 and i bet vl is lte and vx is non lte….
and v is lte and china v is non lte
    wow??????????

Incidentally, the Docomo and AU networks are quite different so these two devices will have a few differences in terms of radios, firmware, and whatnot…

BUT, if anyone was thinking of getting an unlocked one for use in other countries, you’re more likely better off with the Docomo version. (At least for people in most major markets)

Thanks for your useful information, but VL silver strip line is so tempting to me

Japan display has also announced a ‘WhiteMagic’ 5″ inch 1080p RGBW display for smartphones with an integrated touch function:

I don’t understand why people keep trying to compare phones. Why isn’t it using a quad-core, why doesn’t have latest android OS, etc. Last time I checked people purchase handsets because it does what they want it to do, not because you want bragging rights. if you want the latest OS then get a nexus device, if you want quad-core get a nokia or something like that. But if you want a pure walkman experience, clear cut screen, mobile BE, one of the best cameras on the market, or just a fan of Sony hardware then get an Xperia it wont let you down…personally I think the VL and or the AX models are going to be beast.
