Xperia ZL called Xperia ZQ in Brazil; launches in H1

in Xperia Z and Xperia ZL

For some reason, Sony Mobile renamed the Xperia ZL (C650X) to the Xperia ZQ in the Brazilian market. We’re not sure why this is the case and, as far as we are aware, the Xperia ZQ name is not being used in any other country. Sony Mobile Brazil confirmed that the Xperia ZQ would launch in the country during the first half of this year (that’s quite a wide launch window).

The company also confirmed that the Xperia Z (C660X) would not be launching in Brazil, only the Xperia ZQ. Interestingly, Sony Brazil said that it did some consumer research with select individuals when trying to decide which handset to launch. The results showed a preference for the Xperia ZQ in relation to size, design and features. We do wonder how other consumers would have spoken around the world, if they were also asked which handset to launch prior to the event…

Thanks Marcelo!

    funny

sony makes mistakes over and over again…

  • Felipe Pimenta

As far ass I’m aware, it’s because of a variation for Brazilian 4g (2500 Mhz).

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Carl-Johan-Nilsson/664148428 Carl-Johan Nilsson

Noticed this when I was checking what countries get what version. But as Felipe states, it’s probably due to a different 4G standard.
You’ll still be able to order any version of the phone you want over the web, and in most countries they’ll be in electronic stores. The availability stated is on carrier based.

  • Information

There are three variants of ZL:

    ZL LTE “Euro bands” = GSM x 4, UMTS B1, B5 and B8, LTE B1, B3, B5, B7, B8 and B20
    ZL HSPA+ = GSM x 4, UMTS B1, B2, B4, B5 and B8
    ZL LTE “America bands” = GSM x 4, UMTS B1, B2, B4, B5 and B8, LTE B1, B2, B4, B5, B17

For Z, the LTE “Euro bands” and HSPA+ variants are the same. There is no LTE “America bands” variant of Z.

Hello I’m from Brazil, the model “ZQ” will not be resistant to water, with changes due to the 4G network, and small changes in design, such as the edge. The internal hardware stays the same, change happens right in the finish.
Even being an active member of Sony Mobile was not called for this research … )
Would like the same model Z. But I’m happy anyway.

  • lovebmw

    what is H1?

  • boosook

I guess most people would have chosen the ZL over the Z even in other countries… smaller than the GS3 yet with a bigger screen, lighter than the Z, no annoying USB and jack cover (most people do not need waterproof phones), removable battery, no fragile, heavy and fingerprint prone glass back and probably could be a tag cheaper, so at least they should launch both the phones!

  • sony_forever

Sony India Website shows BOTH Xperia Z and Xperia ZL as coming soon!!!

  • Rishi Rathod

  • paul4id

ZL doesn’t have a removable battery, and I don’t think I’d find the port covers annoying. Other than that I agree. We’d be getting the ZL in the UK based on size outweighing everything else.

  • Felipe Pimenta

    Brazil uses B7, I think (2500 Mhz)…

  • Felipe Pimenta

  • Felipe Pimenta

    First half of year.

  • Leandro Miranda

  • Felipe Pimenta

Eu sei, só estou comentando as outras diferenças.

  • Leandro Miranda

    some are just lucky

    oh cool thanks

The name change is probably to avoid a reference to the “Zona Leste” (East Zone) in Sao Paulo, which slangs to ZL. It has a very bad reputation, sometimes with prejudice, for crimes and poor people. Releasing the ZL with its ZL name would be something akin to releasing a product called NJ in the US expecting a rejection from new yorkers due to the New Jersey reference. Of course, this is just a conspiration theory and the comparision is not very good, since the ZL slang here is very much worst.

  • weeeeooo

    what r u talking about?

  • chickybits

If you can get a half-decent internet speed there, then you are very lucky indeed lol

  • chickybits

Is that based on actual consumer research?

  • chickybits

If that’s true then it shows good local market knowledge..still most of us I think suspect it’s Sony being crazy with the names again!

  • YodhaMali

It’s only fair ’cause none of Xperia T/TX, V launched in India.

  • Leandro Miranda

  • stvocfv

I don’t fucking know where they had this survey but I garantee you this, SONY BRASIL always treat us like shit!

  • Marcelo

I really think it’s not this, buddy. Maybe ZL sounds bad for some São Paulo citizens, but this slang is very recognizable only for THESE citizens. So we have a whole Brazil that wouldn’t even think a thing such this. I believe that’s due some technical change. But all I really want to believe is that this action don’t appoint sony to fragment even more their updates…

  • Samuel Serafim

The Brazilians really appreciate this blog. :D

  • sony_forever

    True

  • Felipe Pimenta

It’s strange, because Brazil uses Band 7, which is also available on the C6603 of Xperia Z… I don’t know why they didn’t bringed both… And about carriers, we don’t have that stupidity US have with each carrier having a different frequency. 2100 MHz for 3G, 2500 Mhz for 4G.

  • junin romualdo

Brazil seems a joke, a few days before the release of Z / ZL I contacted Sony mobile br told me they had neither expected to launch in Brazil (joke) and the rest of the reply or comment, it would be the biggest joke be launched around 6 months? WTF!! 6 months ago the phones out of 1 GB of RAM to 2 GB RAM, 6 months ago cell phones no longer be dual core to quad core!! If they ask for Brazilians clear that consumers wanted both the Z and ZL. One of the largest communities in Brazil that reaches nearly 40,000 members hated the news know about the “ZQ”. He had to dismiss the representative, general manager, director of marketing for Sony to come from Brazil and a Japanese to flow. Nobody sees phones by Sony on TV! Example galaxy s3 launches globally took a month for all state capitals have the S3! Let Sony Brazil!

  • http://www.facebook.com/filippe.andre Filippe Andre

Shame! I’ll find a way to get the Xperia Z then!

  • Roy

As far as I am concerned, as a Brazilian consumer myself, hated this decision. I wanted the Z but what do I get? I once more get to import my phone instead of buying locally with warranty. This is so short sided of Sony. Wth does costumer research with select individuals mean anyways? They didn’t select me, that’s for sure. I wanted water proof glass back!!! I’m just about to give up on Sony. I have actually been a Sony fan boy for ages and have never given much thought to any other brand, but it’s high time i check that Google Nexus super cheap, specs driven phone. It’s a Nexus isn’t it?
