GSM Arena tests the Xperia Z battery

by XB on 07/03/2013

in Xperia Z and Xperia ZL

The Sony Xperia Z comes with a 2,330mAh capacity battery. This may sound a lot compared to the typical 1500mAh batteries in previous Xperia phones, but the Xperia Z has a larger 5-inch display to power, all in 1080p, as well as a quad-core chipset. GSM Arena recently put the Sony Xperia Z through their battery lab tests to reveal some respectable results.

Sony’s Stamina mode goes some way in keeping the phone lasting throughout the day, but if you want to know how much talk time, video playback and web browsing time you can expect from the phone then check out the charts below. The handset managed just over 16 hours of 3G talk time, 5 hours and 39 minutes of video playback and 6 hours and 37 minutes of web browsing. Overall standby time was 48 hours (not including Stamina mode), which seems a decent result.

Via GSM Arena.

Thanks Nasim!

Either you make it UGLY and beat motorolla maxx or elegant and do somewhat better than avarage… yup i chose elegant, i am satisfied.

  • e.d

    perfect performance
my Z done well in battery endurance as well.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Carl-Johan-Nilsson/664148428 Carl-Johan Nilsson

This, quite good result, with Stamina Mode disabled. The Xperia Z boosts some extreme stand-by times, so the only power hungry parts are web-browsing and video playback. When not in use the Xperia Z is a marathon runner.

  • AsadMulla

I think the battery life on the XZ is very good. I am very pleased

how could they not include music playback with a Bluetooth headset?

  • kiikooo

So first think i do when i got the Z was put it in water :). I take it out, still working and everything. Then i try to play music and the Speaker is so low now as if water is stuck inside :S. I called support the guy said you have to wait till it dries. Seriously?
Did anyone have the same problem?

  • http://www.facebook.com/ashad.mamood Ashad Mamood

If they used a whitemagic display then they could probably get a few more hours out of the battery easy!

  • Max

It’s normal. Just wait 1 hour so the speaker can dry :)

  • Guest

That’s why I’m definitely get this. Just can’t wait. Also getting the Tablet Z as well. Nice!!

Here’s to shooting for third place. I have been dropping my XZ all over the place, Wood Floor, Ceramic Tile Floor, VCT Floor, (even on asphalt). The glass did not break but the side and corners get dents, chips, scratches etc… When i dropped it on asphalt the back glass has a couple of small dings. I have the white XZ so you really cannot notice any of it unless I point it out.

  • jag

Wow! So brave of you to drop your phone in any floor types. 1 like for you.^^

  • innocentbaba88

Can any one tell me.does sony xperia z or zl kills the sale ratio of samsung s3??? From me i realy want sony z will b the most selling phone of the world……bt plz rply me .exact info .

  • afzal

so this test without stamina mode .. how cool… Xperia Z has improvement battery from past xperia …

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Rene-Pedroso/1076467708 Rene Pedroso

it’s a larger battery, it should be an improvement

  • Cheng

wow..you’re misusing your phone on purpose?-.-” Z would cry ~~ lol… cherish it !~~

  • phillip

we really want that too, but Rome is not build in one day, we will need to have patience.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Rene-Pedroso/1076467708 Rene Pedroso

Absolutely, I want to see what it can handle. You honestly cannot tell that there are nicks on it unless I point them out, very hard to see. The asphalt was the worse drop. I haven’t done water test because so many have done it. I have really been dropping it on purpose to show it off to others and they are impressed with it. I will not do it anymore because I have dropped it on every surface that could cause damage. Also there will be a new flagship Xperia within six months to a year that I will get anyway and if they continue with the Z series than I know what to expect

Alrite… since this is the latest topic :) ill post my xperia Z review here.

I got the phone about 2 days ago… i got the black one… when the guy over at the retail store took it out of the box for me ( i asked him to as wanted him to apply the protectors on the front and the back) “wow” poped out of his mouth… as Xperia Z looks epic from every angle… its not as big as 5 inch is supposed to feel and thats a good thing…. coming from a series of xperias and other popular phones over the last year ( xperia S, Xperia T, HTC one X and samsung galaxy s3) id say xperia Z takes the cake …. 1thing i am being asked alot is about the washed out display… U have to see it to belive it that there is no washed out display… it looks stunning and very sharp, and viewing angles arent that bad… it has better viewing angles than my sister in law’s galaxy nexus. Bravia engine 2 is much more improved than 1…where b.E 1 made very minimal changes to pics…. BE.2 is very aggresive in saturating and enhancing the contrast .. i do wish there was a way to keep the bravia engine 2.0 on all the time even outside the pics and videos… the loud speaker is so so…no way near as loud as xperia s or t… and if u submerge it ull have to wait for about 30 mins for the loudspeaker to get back to normal… The camera is excellent… and the pics i have posted on my fb from xperia z camera got alot of positive response from my friends and family for the camera quality.. i stil have to test video recording though… the Sony UI as always is classy..unlike touchwiz and senses which have some sort of smiliarities and dont really have a defining thing about them ..ok well htc sense is much more customizable… and kinda good… Sony sticks with its sleek high quality lamborghinish UI and u will know its a sony phone… they sadly removed the Cosmic flow live wallpapers :(… but the new lock screen and wallpapers are nice too… ( i used sony’s jelly bean on Xperia T so its pretty much the same)….only thing i dont like about this phone is the placement of the loudspeaker…as its pretty easy to get it covered up when u r carrying the phone in your right hand. other than that i dont have any issues besides the heating up…but i guess thats alrite as the phone is waterproof…The battery life is not bad as i was expecting.. i charge the phone once a day with my nexus 7 charger ( i belive that charger charges alot faster than any other…Asues is crazy when it comes to high quality hardware and have never let me down)…. in the end… id like to say..Xperia Z is all it was hyped to be…infact its better than all that…. the design and looks alone are more than enough to keep u away from other phones for a long time to come… :)…its good to see Sony back in the game as a major Smartphone maker….

p.s I still belive that Sony makes the most high quality products when it comes to the materials used. I own a vaio F series laptop, a Sony Bravia 55inch LED and Sony gameing headsets… a ps 3 and they all look very awsome when compared to other brands…and xperia Z is no difference. The phone is very expensive here in pakistan…. with only the iphone 5 costing more in 32gb and 64gb storages…its 73000 rupees here without warrenty whereas iphone5 costs around 85-100k. But its worth the price :) So if u have any doubts about getting a xperia Z or not… i hope they r cleared now ^^.. also if u think the viewing angles are bad ( which they are not) id like to ask u.. what kind of geek wants to look at his phone from different angles?unless u r retarded…

Get this phone!!! Sony deserves your money!!!!

  • Hero

Rome certainly wasnt built with this high a price especially when players like apple and samsung have already taken most of the cake in the market!

and builders didnt announce a New Rome everyday so nobody would visit the old one! Yep, thats a sony!

On a side note: Can somebody post a performance review of Sony MH-EX300AP headset? I can’t found one on the net, so I guess users who has one can give feedback. You might want to compare it with Bose, Beats and the likes. Also, does it have a symmetrical length of wires for left and right speakers? I just don’t like the ones with asymmetrical length, which require you to put the wires behind your neck. Would appreciate a good response. Thanks! :)

  • PRo

I went to service station and found that phone heats up to quickly…….. Also the screen looked gud but again compared to Ion, It wasnt that gr8. Camera was better than Ion and S but was on darker side…… The sales person Stated that its an demo piece and not the retail one but again Ion and S were Demo once….. Please Comment. And yeah, in India Its 37,990 Rs :)

Nice review bro. I like the ‘retard’ part. LOL. But, I have a question about it’s packaged earphones. I posted it on the same thread, but I just read your post and you might be the most reliable here, you might want to answer it yourself. :)

I’ve had the Z since monday. I fully charged it the first day before powering it up. I’ve never had a new android phone last so long , especially the first few weeks. Fully charged at 8.00am, and still above 30% at midnight. My usage pattern if anything has increased because of its newness factor. I am really impressed so far !

  • http://twitter.com/defsix Dave Six

Just shake the water out, it probably gets lodged inside. Or when showing off it’s waterproof ability just put a finger over the speaker hole.

  • Ziich

Personally I would prefer it to be 8.5 – 9.0 mom and have a large 3000+ may battery with great battery life than 7.9mm that will last you half a day

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Rene-Pedroso/1076467708 Rene Pedroso

Of me dropping it or the dings and nicks?

  • Coolkid

Of you dropping it, of course…!!!! :D

  • afzal

My xperia v will heat up after submerge into a water.. Maybe the water sensor do their things. In normal usage no issue unless using data connection to download an aps.

  • ProWeirdo

I’m a Sony fan, (so don’t rage at me) but I am really disappointed. In other blogs they made many battery tests, and the Xperia Z basically sucks. Sony lied, it cannot live as long as they wrote!

  • uriel08

Razr maxx (launched 2011) has the better battery life in 2013 :D

Why would you cherish a phone? It can be replaced in a heartbeat.

    Xperia Z Display!!!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bqW_wFtPfWA here at 1:44 you can see that the last time kernel was modified was the 17th January…and the Internation Version is 13th January…u can see that the xperia z has deep blacks in that video…so lets hope sony will update the kernel so we also have good colours

  • gt510

Can you please remove the front screenprotector, and make a foto of the phone view without it, please! please!

is the speaker good and loud…..

The best bang for buck headset I’ve ever used was the JVC extreme explode with my xperia x10 they cost 30 usd but are better then beats headsets and cost a fraction of the price beats is rubbish over hyped garbage.

Alot of my friends have tried my JVC in ear headsets and they are amazed at the clarity and bass it provides so is my girlfriend who actually owns a pair of beats.

  • superfly

dude how do you get half a day? please explain when people are getting to days out of this device and other heavy users are getting 12 – 14hours

  • superfly
  • Abdullah Kakooli

funny. the Xperia Z with TN TFT 1080p display with 2330 mAh battery got 48 hrs while the LG Optimus G Pro with IPS 1080p display with 3140mAh battery got 50 hrs based on GSMarena testing. and mobile bravia engine 2 was one during the Xperia Z video playback test. So the Z has better battery than the G PRO

  • superfly

so all the user testimonials must be a conspiracy then? seriously dude?

  • Ziich

i do not have it yet as the xperia z is not availible in the us yet and i would like to wit for one that has lte compatible to tmobile and att. my usual day starts at about 5am and ends at about 10.30-11pm. this is with a lot of tethering to my nexus 7(for google maps and dropbox), playing jrpgs, and streaming from youtube netflix and pandora. so 12 hours (half a day) will not cut it and i would have preferred not to have to charge it before i get home. this is obviously not enough for me to not get this device i simply wished that it had a larger battery as it could not hurt.

  • superfly

So what you saying is that you work in a hole that has no electricity.

And by 12 hours I was referring to a working day as in the average person only works 8 hours so 12 hours of heavy usage should be more then enough for anyone.

Besides you should be working not sitting on your phone so if you actually working and not playing on your phone you should get more then 12 hours use.

But if 2330mah with stamina mode isn’t enough for you why complain just email sony about their lackluster battery performance then go buy a motorola razr max see problem solved.

Dont know much about the nexus 7 but from what i can tell for a tablet the battery life is terrible.

  • Ziich

dude chill out. all i said is that i wish it had a bigger battery so that i would not have to carry my charger with me. I don’t know why your getting so butt hurt about it. i would have also preferred if it came in red or blue, had a dedicated camera button came with a 64gb memory card, could transform into a hover jet, shoot lasers and do 1million other impossible things. Like i said before its not that big a deal and it is not gonna stop me from getting it. by the way I don’t work i’m a student and the nexus 7 can last about a day to 2 day with regular usage but i don’t use it as much as i do my phone.

  • AlexBurnout

    Imprezzive.

Why is my battery life going down still when I’m charging and using my Sony Xperia Z simultaneously?

  • Wes T

I am having an issue with the speaker on my Z, It has been quiet for about 7 days now!! Do we think its faulty?? Or is there anything I can do to get it to work properly again?

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Rene-Pedroso/1076467708 Rene Pedroso

There is already video of that from several site, mine is no different. I am not dropping it on asphalt again because that did cause some damage to the glass and frame.

i only tested them 2-3 times as i normally use Sony DR-GA 200… but the few times i tried them they produce excellent results… and i was greatly impressed by them…. and yes with clearphase+ these can defenitly compete with Beats.. i never used bose so cant say…. but vs beats they are on par…maybe better…:) infact even when compared to DR-GA 200…they are quite good :)…
p.s sorry for late reply was sort of busy
    Sony Stereo Headset DR-GA200

  • turner

it will go down if you are using the screen. rate of power consumption is greater than charging with the screen powered on. remember that recommended charging time is more than 4 hours while the battery can only last for a little over 5.5 hours.

  • reDalerT

tethering eats up battery fast, simple as that.
