Xperia Z root now working on handsets with locked bootloaders

XZ Root_1An exploit has been discovered on the Sony Xperia Z that allows users to root the phone even if their bootloader is locked. Most phones bought directly from some carriers such as O2 and Three in the UK will have locked phones, which means they won’t get to dabble with custom ROMs. However, this exploit means that they can at least enjoy a rooted phone.

The exploit was discovered by @goroh_kun who provided a rootkit. Another user, @huhka_com then packaged an EasyRooting Toolkit for people to use. The exploit is designed for use on the Japanese DoCoMo version of the Xperia Z (SO-02E), but western users of the Xperia Z (C6603) are reporting success too. More details (in Japanese) can be found here.

Thanks Northwood!

  • I’m going to wait for the update to 4.2.x and then think if it’s necesary root it.

Rooting without unlocked bootloader is the best kind of root there is, haven’t updated my XS too .55 just because of that, I don’t want an unlocked bootloader but I need root for alot of free / paid apps here (in the caribbean – St.Kitts) are not available in my country so Root + Lucky patcher + market enabler enables me too buy those paid apps and download the free ones :) still supporting google, and loving root at the same time, mainly only have root for Avast extras and market enabler.

It’s always necessary to root a mobile, removing bloatware, make complete backup, init.d, tweaks, etc…

    How about staying on topic

  • Just to warn you I read that rooting the device may stop NFC connections workings. Read on XDA. Just a heads up. I personally can’t confirm this though
