Xperia ZR announced: 4.6-inch 720p display, IP58 water resistant, 13MP camera with dedicated camera button

Xperia ZRSony has unveiled the Xperia ZR (C550X ‘Dogo’) and our previous report was right on the money with the specs. The Xperia ZR has a 4.55-inch OptiContrast display with 720 x 1280 pixel resolution and 319 PPI. It will be powered by a 1.5GHz quad-core Snapdragon chipset (APQ8064 + MDM9215M) with Adreno 320 graphics, 2GB RAM, 8GB internal storage (4.6 GB user accessible) and a micro SD memory card slot.

Sony is marketing the handset as having the “highest level of water-resistance for filming in Full HD underwater”. To that end it is IP55 and IP58 compliant, being both dust-resistant and “waterproof” according to Sony. You can keep the phone submerged in 1.5 meters of fresh water for up to 30 minutes. To easily take pictures or videos under water, the Xperia ZR also has a dedicated camera button, something that was missed on the Xperia Z as well as last year’s Xperia V.

Camera duties are taken care of by Sony’s 13MP Exmor RS sensor, with HDR for both photos and videos. The Xperia ZR also has a VGA front-facing camera. Other features include NFC, GLONASS MHL, Bluetooth 4.0 and a 2300mAh battery . The Xperia ZR has dimensions of 131.3 x 67.3 x 10.5 mm and weighs 138 grams. It will come in four colours (black, white, pink and mint) and launch by the end of June in select markets. We expect the same phone to be announced as the Xperia A (SO-04E) in Japan later this week.

perfect. except for the thickness. but hey. nobody needs 1080p for a phone for crying out loud, a battery waste.

  • yuskhanzab

dont forget, our xperia v also didnt have that camera button. :(

  • Sp Gunarath

Xperia Z, Zl, ZR, Wow, its awesome

  • Tim Vels

I’m sure it wont cost 450 US$, it would be more than that. And so i will have to force myself to move to the Xperia SP :( :(

  • fdtgretre

    Yes, new “flagship”

  • http://www.facebook.com/soj.varghese Soj Varghese

Thanks Sony producing this marvelous phone

  • http://twitter.com/soraandrie Andrie Putra

this is “low price of Z ” ?

  • SOny

    battery >.<
I wish Big as Xperia SP :D

  • Xyor

Guys. There’s bands that support tmo and att but no LTE at all

  • Herman

They’re finally making phones smaller again!
    Way to go Sony

  • http://www.facebook.com/Enge.Zeearm Kazuo Satō

    Its 2300 mah at least,
Xperia A is the Japanese version and it has a 2300 mah battery.
Don’t worry someone will make a extended battery for this between 3000 -3500 mah.
Then this will be the perfect phone.
going by Xperia SP which has the same internals/screen size is a good indicator of battery life the Xperia ZR.
    so roughly
Talk time (up to): 18 hours and 53 mins***
Standby time (up to): 734 hours***
Music listening time (up to): 39 hours***
Video playback time (up to): 7 hours and 36 mins***

  • Xyor

Is it?! Don’t you worried a little bit about Sony’s ability to support this large number of phones? So far we had (at least) T TX V J E Z ZL SP L ZR and Janpanese variants GX Z AX A UL for Sony to support(upgrades and bugs fixing). I really don’t think it’s good for Sony to “try hard” on releasing different phones.. Why the hack do they even want to release the SP while this baby was planned. So now we had high end Z almost high end ZL mid range ZR almost mid range SP low end L and super low end E. and couple months later, we are going to move to H2 collection, which might have the same number of phones as H1. I just don’t understand.

  • Silverwagon

So Xperia ZR = International version of Xperia A?

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Carl-Johan-Nilsson/664148428 Carl-Johan Nilsson

Same SoC means it’s not harder to support. Don’t worry about the number of models, but rather the number of different SoCs. And Sony is sticking solely to Qualcomm this year it seems.

  • Xyor

Yes, they all used Qualcomm this year…but there are and will be more than 5 different SoC used in phones. And according to htc’s experience, I don’t think large number of phones releasing is good

  • http://www.facebook.com/Enge.Zeearm Kazuo Satō

Yeah, only slight differences for their respective markets.
Only differences is internal storage on the ZR is 8gb, A is 16gb and the obvious tv tuner in the Japanese version.
I haven’t seen any pictures of the ZR with the notification strip under the display like the Xperia A but it could still be there.

  • RonRon3050

    Finally sick of waiting
    Will buy this phone first;)

Sony u make we belive :)

  • Xyor

But if the ZR will be released in US with mint…as a Sony fan, I’m still goin to have one

    acro has it :)

  • http://www.facebook.com/kero.keropy.5 Kero Keropy

well i hope they fix camera problem in ZR, i’m gonna wait for this or maybe Honami when it’s availabe in indonesia

  • Tomislav Matić

Successor of XPERIA V. Thanks Sony for camera button. That is missing on XPERIA Z.

  • MyLive

IMHO, Sony want to give more options.. Let say.. not everybody like SP notification light styling..? Could be just simple notification light like on ZL..? etc etc.. I think I like ZR! I was thinking of buying V before.. Coz Z is too big for me.. One more thing, I thought Galaxy series offer MORE variant compare to XPERIA line up.. ;)

  • Xyor

I think there will be one. But not sure if it will function like the SP or ZL ‘s

  • Xyor

Because they have a true flagship. I believe and wish Z is the one for H1, but as far as the sales number, it failed. (I contributed two/_ one white and one black) I think Sony is doing something that might eventually bite himself

  • GeeKLoRD

Sony….Y U NO release one phone with all your best features???

  • Amir

ZL has it and that’s exactly why I went for it instead of Z

  • debianQml

    Qualcomm MDM9215M / APQ8064 + same cam = almost same rom for Z ,ZL, ZR :P

  • jag

1080p is better when watching movies. ^^

  • Xyor

Well, more phones they make, less chance of them getting upgraded timely. Since Z ZL ZR will not be the only platform that needs upgrades. It might end up like S ion and acro S

  • http://www.facebook.com/kero.keropy.5 Kero Keropy

i have xperia Z and i cannot tell the difference between 1080p and 720p .. it might be have differences but i think no one would notice it

  • jag

you will see that the pictures/ movie are well detailed in 1080p. and you should be playing a 1080p movie so you can see this. i tell you, its different. When i compared the SGS note 2 and my Z. my Z is better than friend’s note 2. And when my friend saw it too, he wants to hide his note 2 in his pocket… hehe!

  • Nabil

What is the point of this phone ? I mean it is the Xperia Z, with a 4.6″ 720p screen … Why? For a dedicated camera button? They could’ve put it on the Z. Now they have the Z, SP, L, ZL, ZR, E, the honami, the S39h, the 6.44″ phablet, and probably some upcoming low end phones, … Wtf? Seriously, all they need to do is to focus on 3 phones a year, low-, mid-, and high-end. I tell you now, all these phones will get updates a year after their announcement …

  • debianQml

that’s why i hate Android now.
    more versions without more improvements
google should introduce system level update manager for there bug fixes.

  • jag

burst mode can shoot 15 frames per second!! wow!!! maybe we can have this too in the Xperia Z’s upcoming update because they have similar processors.

  • jag

    8gb of ram… oh no!

  • http://www.facebook.com/titisanberuang Rizky Maulana

WOW, perfect, my dreams come true…
    thanks SONY

    make.believe

  • boosook

8 gb of internal storage… so I hope it won’t have the same problem of the SP (that is, many apps cannot access the sd card)

  • http://www.facebook.com/musikamaru Jhonbert Magana

Prefect, except for the vga front cam. Seriously, this is 2013!! But still, I want this because of the size!!

  • The Loyalist

    ‘Honami’

  • http://www.facebook.com/kero.keropy.5 Kero Keropy

if compare to others smartphone i have to agree, watching movie in Z is better than others

  • Jan

ZR according to 720p will be muc thfaster than xperia Z having same quad and ram and great camera. I agree that in front should be better camera. Only three phones each for other-end is small and some can’t find xperia for them. Xperia is not an iPhone for sure, curious if there will be more than one iPhone at a time (speculated mini or cheap) iPad mini I like. 6.4″ also curious but this size would be good when flexible design :) new Sony UI in this year..

  • scw

I would rather have a thicker phone with better battery life. Using Xperia V right now….

  • scw

I am still hoping for 4″ phone.

  • karty

high end specs with..fuknVga front facing camera, who like crap quality self portraits f/k sny

  • Sanyam

Whats the material of the body used?

  • Sanyam

Looks are not of sony standard as it looks like xperia E

Looks like plastic is used…does it have a removable battery?

  • pongnamu

What are you talking about??? It has 2GB of RAM, 8GB of internal storage

  • jag

Haha! Sorry! 8gb of internal storage only!!

This will be a problem in the future. like what the sgs4 users have been whining in every forums.. 16gb turned out to be 8-9gb only.. So for this ZR, the usable memory will be lesser

  • Z

What about Samsung they have released 3 time the amount of phones in 6 months than Sony has.

  • om

    Too thick

  • afzal

xperia zr are 9th device from sony not include upcoming rumors device for 2013. On the other brands samsung already release 20 device for 2013 not iclude galaxy s4 zoom , galaxy s4 mini , galaxy s4 water resistant and bla bla bla….

  • http://twitter.com/atWidget Widget

    8Gb, bye

  • http://www.facebook.com/musikamaru Jhonbert Magana

    Exactly! WHy vga front only?!

  • TjaldidTjaldid

you forgot to mention that it has an OLED dispaly

  • TjaldidTjaldid

    i has an OLED display

  • http://www.facebook.com/karamela.kimo Akram Ahmed

nice one…i liked it although i have sony xperia z :D

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Rene-Pedroso/1076467708 Rene Pedroso

Just Dumb, Sony releases a lower end model that has functionality that the higher end model should have had (dedicated camera button, OptiContrast Display etc….) and now they are coming out with Honami. I understand that our Sony phones have a short lifespan but this is really getting ridiculous with Sony. Sony has a new moto ”The Best of Sony in a Smartphone” when is should state ”The Best of Sony in Smartphones”. Ughhhhhhhhh

  • dreamycreamy

Same here, something like the SP but 4″, that would be my perfect phone.

  • Ziich

    nope still lcd

  • Ziich

not oled. it had the same type of display as the Z

I tried over and over to see if there is any difference in sharpness between 720p Xperia TL & 1080p ZL. They are pretty much identical in sharpness. I was hoping to be able to read texts in desktop mode without zooming on websites like verge, etc. on my ZL. Interestingly, 1080p ZL screen was as illegible as my TL. I guess I’m gonna have to wait for 4K screen to be able to do that – LOL.

  • http://www.facebook.com/titisanberuang Rizky Maulana

but if u only have 720p video, it’s waste your money mate, hehe :P
    ZR perfect cois :P

  • jag

You wouldn’t really know if you haven’t tried. XD

  • Nabil

Yes, but those aren’t flagships, we don’t even know they are released, they’re there for people who want a cheap phone to call and send messages. They focus their marketing on the BIG one, their one true flagship, the Galaxy S4. And it works perfectly.

Sony have I don’t know how many flagships each year …

Xperia Z: ‘Experience the best of Sony in a smartphone’
Xperia ZR: ‘Experience the best of Sony in a WATERPROOF smartphone’

Like the Z wasn’t waterproof. I don’t understand how big companies like Sony can still make stupid mistakes like these. Samsung makes crappy phones, but they got it, they know how to sell them. HTC makes great phones, and have a great strategy, but they have a lack of good marketing.

  • Nabil

The phone is great, I know it. But my point is: what is the point of releasing this phone ? It’s the Xperia Z with a dedicated camera button. It will only confuse the consumers, and because they won’t know any of the differences, they will go the easy way: buy the GS4 or the One.

The screen resolution is still 720p. If you play a 1080p video, it downscales. So what if the camera is 1080p?

  • http://www.facebook.com/kero.keropy.5 Kero Keropy

indeed. there’s lot of things sony have to fix it in next Z update.

  • http://www.facebook.com/kero.keropy.5 Kero Keropy

i guess you read it wrong. Just read it again and you will know that ZR not using OLED

“Joining the ever expanding range, the new Stereo Bluetooth™ Headset SBH50 is an advanced app-enabled wireless headset with built-in FM radio, OLED display and one-touch connection for wireless audio streaming.”

until next flagship , i really doubt that sony will change display for their current smartphone

  • Guest

Why don’t you produce your own phone.

  • http://www.facebook.com/titisanberuang Rizky Maulana

nope, u get 4,6GB avaliable out of the box mate :)

  • acEy182

Your friend have big pockets if he can hide note 2 there:)

  • MyLive

It’s IP58 on ZR compare to IP57 on Z.. That’s why Sony confirmed it as a real waterproof smartphone? Z can’t take picture under the water while ZR could and has physical shutter button? TBH i don’t really get what IP58 vs IP57 differences in detail.. As I remember, old Xperia Active has IP67 certification which is more durable..? But overall at least I like Sony marketing strategy for releasing more and more durable phone, even for tablet like Z..

  • Sanjay Negi

Sony Xperia ZR is finally arrived and featuring 720 pixels display, water resistant technology. So with 13 MP of camera it offers the best experience on capturing photos.

2,300 mAh still is an erectile dysfunction battery to power a quad-core processor & a 4.55-inch/5-inch display. SONY intentionally packages such a weak battery so that it has to be recharged more often, which in turn shortens the battery lifespan quicker. This means users will have to spend money sooner to replace the battery. Same intentional sick problem w/ Samsung Galaxy S4 & iPhone.

  • http://www.facebook.com/ronald.macdonald.96995 Ronald MacDonald

Ironically, the least performing brand such as Motorola, is kind & smart enough to fit in a 3,000 mAh battery to its RAZR smartphone. So what if it’s a little thicker?! It’s quite a reasonable trade-off: insignificant increase in thickness for a significantly bigger battery capacity.

  • http://www.facebook.com/ronald.macdonald.96995 Ronald MacDonald

Let’s see if SONY’s next generation of Honami smartphone will package at least a descent 3,000 mAh.

same stupid (power/volume) button position !!!

how can one reach these buttons with his right hand sony ???

  • Arie

There is no difference between 720p and 1080p on a small 4.6 display even for watching movies.
    It’s just useless battery-eater gimmick…
U can only see the difference if u watch it from 40″ HDTV

  • jag

that’s why i bought Z. because 1080p is better. it’s like a small TV. and as i have said before, you wouldn’t know if you haven’t experienced it.

  • Ujang

i hope the 2300 mAh battery of Xperia ZR will fit in Xperia V. 2core of xperia V is enough for me, and the camera is the same (Vga front, and 13mp back) with ZR. V is also dust and water resistant so it should be durable, plus with 2300 mAh battery and STAMINA mode will make it last for days..

I’ll buy this as soon as someone makes an extended battery and back for this phone of at least 3,000 mAh, it will have exceptional battery life, especially if you lower screen brightness to 20-30% and keep STAMINA mode on.
not getting a 1080p phone till they start packing in bigger batteries or use screens that draw way less power
