Xperia Tablet Z AOSPSony has added the Xperia Tablet Z to the Android Open Source Project (AOSP), following in the footsteps of the Xperia Z and Xperia S. Sony is encouraging developers to contribute to the project via Github. Here you will find all the instructions needed to compile and build the project. As with the other Xperia devices, all contributions will be managed by Sony Mobile’s Björn Andersson and Johan Redestig.

The inclusion of Sony’s latest tablet to the AOSP should aide developers in creating their own custom ROMs. Sony also confirmed that it expects to add the Xperia ZL to the AOSP in due course. The video below shows an internal build of the development on the project so far.

At the end it is going to be an experiment only and we will not get anything out of it.

AOSP is a community project, if people don’t contribute then nothing will happen.

I know. I am not a developer but I help them by donating, “will, I did not really help with XS because I did not have that it but is it not greater to work on updating Sony’s broken devices. I really wish that I did not update my tablet. It is slow as hell right now with JB

AOSP = Android Open Source Project
That basically means they have open source code available that will work on those devices. (Well, not quite.. in these cases there are some parts that are not open source but that’s okay because they work — namely camera and network-radio stuff)

AOSP is not meant for consumers; It is meant for developers from people who make variants of Android and for people who make hardware such as accessories and want a more “standard” build of Android.

As part of the AOSP, however, it is more likely to updated on a more frequent basis whereas builds for carriers (and regulations) and builds with a lot of custom stuff will not.

As a consumer, the only benefit you would likely get is that people on XDA will more likely make custom ROMs (Variants of Android) for your device. But that is completely and utterly NOT targeted towards mainstream consumers.

Weird, I could have sworn this was already announced a week or two ago?

Why the Sony UI makes the tablet look even better than with AOSP?

  • Arokhantos

Much smoother still lagging tough see him tap the back button which does’t respond, then click vision number rapidly few momments later in attemp to hide the lag.

If you look closely, he didn’t do that to attempt to hide the lag, he was going to tap it in the first place, look at the hand motion. If it really was lag, he could’ve just record another video instead of using this one.

Awful UI -> that’s subjective, I like it more than iOS and WP.

    Lag as hell -> if you buy a $79 tablet… get a nexus 7/nexus 10 instead

Android tablets experience suck -> get a nexus 7/nexus 10

Android is not good for tablets at all -> get a nexus 7/nexus 10

Seems to me that you’ve never used a decent android tablet.

    $0ny sucks!
