XTZ_Unbox_1The Sony Xperia Tablet Z is now out in a number of regions around the world. If you want to know what comes in the retail package, then check out the pics below. These are pictures of the UK retail box and as you can see, the box is pretty sparse. Apart from the tablet itself, you get a USB charging cable, EP880 charger and the usual documentation. What we can say so far is that we are thoroughly impressed with the form factor and performance from our initial testing. We’ll follow up with some further impressions of the tablet in due course.

  • Norio24

    Definitely my next tablet :D

  • Marco Sobrevilla

I’m thinking about selling my iPad so I could get one. At least ill be able to use it more for school with some of the android apps for creating documents.

  • m sacha

ive preordered mine from sony here in new zealand, hopefully getting it next wednesday! cant wait

  • http://www.facebook.com/M.khired Mohammed Khired

im not big fan of sony….especially after their constant delay for the update…

but this tablet looks delicious… :P

  • judgey

whats the specs on this sexy beast ?

  • Jesús López Sotelo

Like always, Mexico will receive it until the first week of july.

  • Mac

No charging station included? I must say that I’m not that very impressed by the whole tablet thing but this oneone one is the most interesting one period! If it had thinner bezels I believe it would be even more attractive tho.

  • Marco Sobrevilla

Android is better for creating and editing word documents, right?
Can someone help me out on that one, please.

  • Joe Merol

And costing at least twice the price.

  • Jaouad

Windows RT and W8 tablets have the full Office 2013 experience. However There are other solutions on both android and ios. U think it’s cheaper though on android.

I’m going to get the Z for school and use those alternative apps until office releases on android, which Microsoft has planned.

  • Kazuo Satō

Beautiful tablet, don’t trust Sony for updates though!
be a while before they get one more cent from me,
they have a lot of making up to do!

  • Bret Homan

The anticipation to get mine tomorrow in the mail is killing me.

  • Marco Sobrevilla

I was thinking that its cheaper but I’m not completely sure. I really do would like the tablet though.

I’ve tried different doc editing apps but they don’t really do the trick and Office costs a bit too much for me to buy on the App Store.

  • dereknobuyuki

Thicker bezel is part of tablet design in general and the way it is intended for use. Without the bezel, it would be a giant smartphone =P

I have the cradle but obviously not everyone wants the cradle. It comes in a separate box with a separate cost.

In fact all Sony products are very good untill they run Android OS.

  • Shaun Hammond

How did you pre-order it here? I’ve tried their site but it gives me dead links. I was expecting to be able to pre-order it by now (only heard about it a couple days ago, but I’m deadset on it)

  • m sacha

Sony NZ on facebook mentioned that we could check one out in the weekend, so I had a play with one on saturday and preordered one at the same time. $729 for the 16g and $849 i think for the 32g.

  • KKTK

Hmm, brick of plastic. Lets wait 3 years and then take a picture…

  • Shaun Hammond

Oh, are there actual Sony retail stores over here? I definitely want to pre-order to get it as soon as release. CM10.1 on this bad boy, mmmmm.

  • m sacha

yeah theres 2 in auckland, newmarket and sylvia park, but the only store that had it was newmarket, and theres stores in wellington and christchurch. im not sure if they are at any of the other stores tho…

  • Shaun Hammond

Ah, bummer for me up here in Kaitaia. Oh well, I’ll just wait until the online store starts showing it or give them a ring tomorrow.

  • m sacha

online store is not reliable at all, I have a Xperia Z, so ive been constantly going on the online store for the dock, it always says out of stock, when i was in the newmarket store on saturday, the docks were on sale, lol

  • Shaun Hammond

Yeahhhh, ehh. I tried buying a stereo system and some headphones from it once, kept on waiting for them to come back in-stock but they never did, so I moved on to some better stuff anyway. Problem is that this is like the most perfect Android tablet out, haha. I’m not keen on waiting any longer for something else, and everything else out right now kinda isn’t everything I want. I’ll give them a call, maybe I can set something up over the phone with a retail shop.

  • Kaja

    Surface Pro is much better

  • Shaun Hammond

I would say so, in terms of it just being easier to move stuff around. I never bothered writing documents or anything on my old iPad, but I’ll be picking up a BT keyboard for the Z and see how it goes. btw, I’ll most likely be just using Drive for word processing, and some other app for PDF reading. Local storage is a lot easier to handle on Android over iOS, cloud storage I would say is kind of the same.

And with Windows 8, eh. The best way to experience Win8 is with a beast tablet that you plan to replace a laptop and tablet with. Hopefully Office does come to Android and iOS soon, but it’s not enough to make me get a Windows 8 tablet and have a half-ok tablet experience.

  • PowerSonic

Only a 1.5A charger?? thats bad for a battery wid huge capacity..

  • Mac

I guess you’re right about that, didn’t think of that. If I ever consider buying a tablet this would be it. The white one is clean but why isn’t there a purple choice as well?

  • Marco Sobrevilla

Could be but it also costs more.

  • fmidmf

it’s glass on the front and glass fiber on the back and on borders

  • Marco Sobrevilla

Let me know how it goes with the Z for word documents. I’m going to start school in August and I wanna be able to take a tablet with me instead of my laptop to do work in.

  • Paul Van Cotthem

Got mine last Friday, from Sony Belgium online store.
    Replaces my iPad.
Superb device, great hardware, software, design, performance.
Best tablet on the market at this time.
    Great comeback story for Sony!

  • http://www.facebook.com/M.khired Mohammed Khired

    exactly !

  • Marco Sobrevilla

how much will it cost in Mexico?
    I’m from Monterrey.

  • Joe Merol

It’s not available yet in the country, as far as I know, but when it is, I wouldn’t be surprised if it’s over $10k

  • Marco Sobrevilla

Wow. I’d like to buy it but if that turns out to be true then I know I won’t be able to get it.

  • Marco Sobrevilla

How would you compare it to the iPad?

  • Shaun Hammond

    Will do.

  • dereknobuyuki

I agree. I would’ve bought a purple one if it was available. I’m happy with the white one and would’ve been happy still with the black one.

  • dereknobuyuki

The iPad is so heavy feeling in comparison.

  • Marco Sobrevilla

Well, yeah. But I meant performance-wise. How does it compare in terms of performance?

  • dereknobuyuki

It’s Snapdragon S4Pro so performance is good for the Tablet Z. It doesn’t blow me away like some of the performance seen from Snapdragon 600/800 but it’s still good performance.

I don’t think performance is really a problem with the Tablet Z nor the iPad (4th generation).

  • Paul Van Cotthem

Sony Xperia Tablet Z versus iPad 4:

    25% lighter.
    25% thinner.
    16:9 form factor vs 4:3.
    Performance on par.
    Better camera back and front.
    Memory expandable via SD card.
    Built-in FM radio.
    Supports NFC.
    Waterproof.
And of course: all the (current) advantages of Android 4 vs iOS 6.

ps: Sony’s Android implementation stays quite close to stock Android, with some useful additions.

I got this free app called Kingsoft Office on my Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 that runs on Android. It’s great for making Word documents, especially if you also get the keyboard dock. Has almost all standard features you know from Word and can send and share etc as well. I think it’s great.

  • Marco Sobrevilla

I hadn’t heard about that app but it sounds like its what I’m looking for.

  • hamboy

    Goodbye Nexus 7!

  • feres13

I wouldn’t say that performance is similar, the A6X’s GPU blows everything else out of the water. The only thing keeping me from getting this tablet is android’s poor tablet optimised apps, if this was a 7.5″-8″ tablet, i’d pick it up immediately, but if i had to pick a 10″ android tablet, this would be my first choice along with the Nexus 10. I just wish there were more 4:3 android tablets since screen realestate would be larger despite a smaller diagonal, i know that you’ll say that 16:10 is better since you’ll get less black bars on videos, but how many times do you use your TV in portrait? NEVER. My main use of a tablet isn’t videos

  • Marco Sobrevilla

That’s one thing that I was also thinking about was that the apps aren’t optimized for android like they are for iOS but I didn’t think it was a big deal since I don’t really see too many people complaining about that. I do like to use my iPad for videos since I like to watch a show or movie before I go to sleep but I don’t think that’ll be a big deal with the Z.

  • Paul Van Cotthem

    * The iPad4’s A6X GPU is indeed superior for certain graphics-intensive applications. However, the Sony Xperia Tablet Z is no slouch. In the Android space, it is among the fastest devices available at this time. You can find some benchmarks here:

    http://www.notebookcheck.net/Review-Sony-Xperia-Tablet-Z.92012.0.html

    * For my personal usage pattern, I have yet to come across an Android app which did not have a tablet version.

  • Shaun Hammond

Rang up Sony in Newmarket yesterday. Pre-ordered today. Surprisingly really cool service over the phone.

  • m sacha

    thats awesome buddy!

  • Lemuel Aduca

    kingsoft is good for documents..

  • imparanoic

I feel that sony xperia tablet z is best for emulators, powerful snapdragon s4 krait pro quad core at 1.5ghz cpu, 2 gb ram, ps3 joypad ( though dual shock does not work) compatible natively, ie, no lag and decent controls.

MHL for tv output ( no confirmation if CEC compatible with MHL sony im750 though, ie, control tablet with tv remote like xperia phones), 16/32 gb built in and up to 64gb sd card, making it large capacity for movies and games

  • Jesús López Sotelo

Well, we are mid august and the official price is $7,999 pesos. Compared to Sears’s ($8,899) and other prices in MercadoLibre. Sony Store Mexico actually is the lowest one (wich is extremely odd). Have you bought yours yet?
