New Xperia Z Ultra screenshots leak showing launcher

by XB on 20th June 2013

in Rumours, Xperia Z Ultra

Xperia Z Ultra Launcher_1Following on from leaked screenshots of a prototype Xperia Ultra Z (Togari) yesterday, a few more shots have appeared this time showing the launcher. Sony looks like it is taking advantage of the extra screen real estate afforded to it by the huge 6.4-inch display as the app icons are smaller than we are used to.

The advantage is that in the app tray, Sony has fitted an extra column and row of icons. The dock also includes six static icons instead of four currently. We suspect that these screenshots must be from an early prototype as some app tray customisation features appear to be missing such as the ability to sort and search.

The grid to access the app tray also appears to be different and consists of a 3 x 3 grid of circles rather than the 4 x 4 grid of squares on current handsets. All will be revealed next Tuesday, so not too long to wait on official details.

I hope Google will come up with a better tablet UI.

  • pickaboo

i don’t really understand why they’re not replacing that background image. it’s awfully ugly!!! when viewed on the actual device. the grays make the device look cheap. it will look awful when photographed. what’s special about that background image?

  • KubsiJack

    waiting for wallpapers…

  • Jhonbert Magana

    You can always change it.

  • natenkiwi

When they said there’ll be a different UI I thought there’ll be a whole change..

  • pickaboo

yes but what i’m more worried about is how it appears to the public. i’m more concerned about the complaints of faded/washed out colors again. critics will say it’s the same old display even if they use a better display because that gray part tends to glow imposingly when photographed by certain cameras.

  • (C):stem

If you guys want to have this resolution on your current device, you could try this:

5.0″, 4.5″ and even 4.0″ screens look really great, the only problem is some apps look messy.

  • tyu

    I want Xperia ZR – I’m tired of Z

  • jimmyreddd

oh god i need this… what’s your guess on the price?
i hope they include hong kong in the first launch wave. i NEED this…

  • Andrew Tan

    I want that wallpaper.

  • If this is the final UI, I’m not impressed.

  • DrKrFfXx

Did that and device refused to load.

Now I have 15 min to reflash before going off to work XD

  • jag

cool… i want that wallpaper!! can see all the black tones and color tones with it!

  • DooMLoRD

From the screenshots it’s clear that this is a very early build…

  • Why does Sony put the quick settings above the clock? I don’t understand that, it’s ugly. Even more to that point, why not do like the usual 4.2.2. Have a separate page for the quick settings

  • cleverthansony

is that Triluminous panel? its still look poor and low contrast. please dont do this again sony! i wanna buy your this phablet.

  • Dan Vafidis

personally I find it very beautiful and stylish,

  • Phobius

    Buy a new monitor?

Just an FYI. These are screenshots, not photos. If you see a panel it is only your own.

  • LOL, how can u judge that with SCREENSHOTS :D

  • Karri

I wonder if those three lines next to the app-drawer pages is actually an additional ‘search’ page? … Also I kind of like the glossier look in use, but there’s also pretty good use of screen space here as far as I’m concerned. If the Togari ZU is good, that could be a sign of the Honami being the phone we’ve all been waiting for.

  • Karri

I agree with it being below the clock, especially on such a huge device, but separate page, I disagree. The point of quick settings is getting to your settings quicker, not with additional taps, no?

  • You can open the second page by opening the notification from the right of it or use 2 finger.

  • Nayagan
  • boosook

don’t tell me that Sony used the grey button bar and notification bar again…

  • Prateek

still better than samsung and other devices

  • KubsiJack

    fan boy, don’t care!

Not making any sense.. Does the icon being shrink or what? 5inch to 6.44inch just takes extra 1.44inch extra space. How comes the icon looks to small? And totally look wierd ( destort image ) . But i like the wallpaper. :-)

  • Jan

I want it more and more
..but this 8MP camera is bad, hope it will not perform bad, compared to 12MP of S.

Hope triluminos display will rock, and every sony service will start to work SEN PSM etc..
    will it be LTE?

Multitouch use on a phone is not ideal, I personnaly never use this when i’m using stock android. I agree with Karri, if you add additional taps it becomes pointless.

  • ProWeirdo

Successor of my glorious Xperia S. Hope it’ll be cheap few months after pre-sale.

  • Lucian

    it’s transparent

    Anyone have this wallpaper? :-D

  • Joe

Oh man, it’s a screenshot. It’s not what you see above the panel. Got it?

  • Open the notification from the right then?

  • Jay

How you know? It’s doesn’t even release yet. Please be a smart fanboy.

  • APai

but getting a bit jaded. maybe it will do just fine until the current run 4.2.2, however, they could change it for 4.3 ?

  • Afzal Zainal Rddz

The grey shades color create 3d look alike to saperate the wallpaper and the icon. If the wallpaper totally black with no grey shades . Its just being a flat ui interface. But it can be change based on user preference.

  • goldenblls

I’m with you on this. It’s too dull and dark when people want to see bright + happy.

  • ManRaj

I promised myself that I won’t change my phone (Xperia S) before two years, on the date of purchase (as it was really expensive), Now I want to go back in time and stop myself from purchasing S, so that I can buy Togari “The Beast” now. XD

  • Carljn

The camera will be almost the same as the 13MP of Z. Only resolution will be lower. And unless you print large copies the only downside to less MP is worse digital zoom.
We should hope, but not expect, for triluminos to make it.
Since it’s rumoured to sport the S800 I’m sure it’ll have LTE!

  • Carljn

6.44″ is 66% larger than the 5″. Remember that inches only measures the diagonal and not the actual area.

  • Aniket Koyande

dat one extra 1.44″ decreases 1920×1080 resolution to the DPI of exactly 342 which is similar to 4.3″ 720p display of xperia S…..hence they are keeping DPI settings to 342 only as in xperia S & using those extra pixels to add more rows and columns :)
Hope u get it….so the icons will appear exactly same in size as they appear on xperia S screen or in short 4.3″ HD screen :)

  • guest

    never go full retard!

  • Kenny Liao

seems like it’s a dynamic wallpaper?

  • Paul

The clock being below the quick settings is actually smart use of space.
What do you want? Another bar above, wasting screen space that could be used for notifications instead, and using the space beside the Clear button for.. nothing?
And yeah, i love quick settings being there right after the first pull down. If i needed to pull down twice you could only call it.. semi quick settings, right?

  • pickaboo

have you seen a photo of the xperia z screen? you will be very disappointed if look at the photo. the actual device certainly looks better. that’s the reason i’m bothered. bloggers and news agencies take photos of the xperia z and the photos end up not looking good. they look washed out because of those grays there. they make the xperia look bad when it supposedly isn’t that bad.

there’s something wrong with the grays and they should be eliminated. i don’t think they create a 3D effect. what have you been snorting? there’s no 3D effect there. 3D effect means you get a sense of depth. the grays on those screens just look like bleeding backlights on a supposedly black background. there’s no 3d effect. it only looks awful.

  • dttw4tw

the navigation bar is actually black. the awful grays on the background are back, though.

  • PowerSonic

    coz he is cleverthansony :P

  • Rizky Maulana

    beautiful… and i love you full SONY|make.believe

  • Afzal Zainal Rddz

Like i mention before the grey gradient create 3d “look alike” effect to create a simple separation between the wallpaper and the icon ui. You can even noticed it when you just used plain black wallpaper and noticed how flat the sony ui will be. Compare with grey gredient blend effect to sony interface. And it depend on each user preferences. Iam using xperia z right now replying your comment, :-) .

  • Afzal Zainal Rddz

Yup tq for the info :-) .But to be honest its kind totally weird for me to see all the icon in 6.44inch display. But i guess better wait for official release to see this device in person.

  • AA

    Looks so plain…

  • TechGuyChris

It looks extremely crisp and sharp, clean, and beautiful

  • Babylonbwoy

it’s a leak from a tester it wasn’t supposed to get public, the guy said that it only get screenshot his friend won’t leak pics of the device from what I read in xda.

Yeah, well, I forgot to mention the risk of a possible soft brick. I’ve done this a lot of times and it worked great.

Another method is installing a custom ROM based in a mod called Paranoid Android, it allows you to choose between tablet, phablet and phone resolutions.

  • Gregorian

Completely stupid size, but I want one.

  • Kulas

The menu button is horribly ugly

  • Paul

Again, i do not want a second page, i want it to be right there on the first, period.
And two fingers? I like to operate my phone with one, i have only one thumb after all. If i wanted to use a device with two hands i’d get a tablet.

  • XcDcS

Well go to your faggot Samsung devices then and stop trolling here.

  • That’s why I said open the notification tray from the right side. If you open it from there, it also opens the second page of the notification which is quick settings.

  • Nabil

Not ideal neither, sometimes you juste want to swipe in your app (for instance gallery) and you accidently swipe from the edge and open the toggles. Trust me I have iOS 7 and there is the same (except you have to open it from the bottom) and sometimes it’s really bothering me.

  • You have trouble opening the quick settings from the VERY top right corner of the notification bar? ON THE NOTIFICATION BAR, not the screen. I think it’s just you here you have problem with that. I’ve heard no complains from anyone that’s on 4.2.2

  • In case you don’t know, in 4.2.2 Sony’s ROM, when you want to add more quick settings, it’ll add another layer of buttons. That also waste screen space for notification. They should’ve done like what Samsung and LG did, you can swipe to all of the quick settings while being on the same screen.

  • drew1289

    why you such a bitch?
quit complaining about it and just get something else!

  • Nabil

Oh I misunderstood you, I thought you were talking about ‘pulling’ the toggles from the right edge of the screen. Well I have no problems with that actually, juste that if you add more taps it loses its sense of QUICK settings, juste saying.

  • I see. I was wondering why is everyone having a hard time opening the quick settings from the notification bar

  • Iksperja

I want this on my XZ ;(
