Sony ushers in the next revolution – the Xperia Z Ultra

0_Xperia_Z_UltraAs widely anticipated, Sony has today launched the new Xperia Z Ultra (C6802, C6833, C6843, C6806, XL39h), describing it as the world’s slimmest and largest full HD smartphone display. It has a 6.4″ touchscreen display which has been optimised to experience at least 60% more of the screen than most other smartphones. It also includes X-Reality™ for mobile – Sony’s intelligent super resolution display technology which analyses each image and reproduces missing pixels to enhance quality for the sharpest videos.

Sony make much of the fact that this is the only full HD smartphone which is not only dust resistant (IP55/IP58) but also waterproof, allowing you to film in full HD underwater. Sony says that the front and back are made of tempered glass with the OptiContrast panel surrounded by a solid metal frame. The glass also has special ultra-hard shatter film protection given its use with pen/pencil or stylus. It is apparently coated with Super Hard Coat ASF.

Unlike many other smartphones Sony are targeting the business market with Xperia Z Ultra, with a super responsive screen and handwriting recognition that can be used with any pencil and selected stylus or pen (a capacitive stylus or metal pen with tip diameter over 1mm). Having an easy toggle keyboard is aimed at helping with multi tasking or one-handed use.

The Xperia Z Ultra will come with 16GB of internal storage and will support micro SD memory cards. Other features include NFC, Bluetooth, GLONASS, ANT+, PlayStation Certification, MHL support and a 2MP front-facing camera. The handset weighs just 212 grams, and will be available in a choice of black, white or purple. It is expected to launch from Q3 2013 (although exact launch dates will vary depending on the market).

Highlight specs:
• Sony’s TRILUMINOS® Display
• A 6.5mm body (179.4 x 92.2 x 6.5 mm) and weight of 212 grams.
• The 8 megapixel camera features “Exmor RS for mobile”, HDR for both photos and film, and Superior Auto mode which automatically activates HDR and noise reduction when needed. However, no LED flash is included.
• Sony have indicated that Xperia Z Ultra will include a free entertainment content offer, including a free trial of the Music Unlimited service (subject to availability).
• The Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 (MSM8974) chipset with 2.2 GHz quad-core processor, Adreno 330 GPU and 4G LTE.
• Battery STAMINA Mode which improves the standby time by four times as it recognises when you’re not using your display and automatically turns off the functions you don’t need, while keeping the notifications you want.

  • kjmok

I dont really give a damn about this device, too big to fit my pocket. if Sony is releasing a new Z with snapdragon 800, i’ll definitely trade in my Z withva new one =P

  • I miss the old day where troll would really ‘troll’ not this

  • Jhonbert Magana
  • kiikooo

How can they release a phone with no flash?
Thats what it says on phonearena.

  • Ray

You better have a good viewing angle, Sony!

  • Afzal Zainal Rddz

I bet samsung feeds ur brains with to much garbage apps and fetures… Lol

  • Finally multiple Small Apps

  • Do you need 203027471743897215832432mAh battery to pleases you?

  • Evita

why people always give a shit on viewing angles,
If you have eyes problem go to see a doctor.

  • I need at least 1 whole day battery life which is not the case for my XZ.

  • dino

  • Jalysson Canaz

SONY please do not delay the launch in Brazil, and anything ZQ / ZL Ultra and Ultra Z yes no trickery okay.

  • Jhonbert Magana

It would have been best to market it as a mini tablet and not a big phone. Like ipad mini.

  • Lil Wayne

Haterz gona hate, it’s a phablet, not a phone. Buy a camera if you want good pictures

  • Billy de Fretes

what language iz diz… i prefer garbage over diz grand father of garbage genius thoughts maker

  • jumbo3220

  • inspire

have you already tested the battery of XZU, before blabbering?

  • Tech Gospel

I guess it’s because it can make and receive calls that gives it the “phone” designation. Additional certification by gov’t agencies and all.

  • vonChirole15

Still no multi window apps like playing videos while browsing the email and not the meager small apps :|
    battery may just be average
I want to love this seriously but Sony is just making it a little bit hard. I might just wait for the Note 3 which should make this price more affordable by then if I were to choose it over the Note 3 which may not have that premium design but I’m assured even right now that it would have better battery and I could maximize the usage of my screen with multi window apps.

  • Tech Gospel

3000 mAh, it’s stated in the specs.

  • evolutionx1

No camera flash? What a fail….

  • Alaa

    In This Device
You can use 3 Small Apps

  • Tech Gospel

No flash on the product photos either. Strange. Although I’ve never used the flash function on my Xperia P for taking photos… I do use it as a flashlight.

  • Simple extrapolation off course. Hope I’m wrong!

  • Silas Arentsen

  • Genius Thoughts Maker

    I didn’t intend to troll
I just wanted to anger sony fanboys like you and I succeed

  • wedjat

I totally agree with you. it is to big for regular user(unless you carry a purse for it). it is not comfortable to use and operate in everyday use. you can use it to watch movies but to make calls and to write sms while moving outside its unpractical.
for me even the z Little bit over the comfort spot but can still use it every day

  • Genius Thoughts Maker

    I don’t like Samsung

But I prefer to have its GS 1 to have this Sony’s brick

  • Genius Thoughts Maker

I don’t want to write in official way

Hands on Xperia Z ultra (sorry its in diff language)

  • Sony

Come on Sony, lets shows the world how your color on the screen should be :D shows them what is Triluminos display :D

These are the best specs a phone has ever seen! It would be great if Sony upgrades the Xperia Z with this chipset and this amazing screen!

Pls do it sony, and i am 100 % sure that my whole family would get one

  • Yusuf

It has a 3000 mAh battery. Sorry, just no. The Butterfly S has a 3200 mAh battery and it’s just 5 inches.

  • denz

    no LED flash ???
    why ???

  • reres

not that bad considering that you are getting a very thin and stylish device. i still wish it had more battery though.

  • thembasicina

I don’t give 2 sh!ts and a flying f@ck about viewing f@cking angles :) honestly though what benefit do you get except people can snoop all over your sh!t…?

  • adi yono

good device, but too bad, no LED flash, and such a bad baterry life.. :(
I heard xperia honami i1 picture leak out, is it true? :D

  • adi yono

too bad, i think 3000 mAh is too little for 6,44 inch display :/

  • Arokhantos

    No IR blaster ?

  • Billy de Fretes

    phatetic person

  • Babylonbwoy

Wonder if this will be H2 Sony Flagship or if they will release another one with “normal” size like XZ…

  • pharix

WTF?? I really wanted to buy this phone. But it only have 8 mp camera :(

  • Babylonbwoy

Z has a bad display (I’m not about angle BS that I don’t give a damn about) compared to XT which is way better when I compare them.

  • igel

I agree wih you!! I think a phone shouldn´t be bigger than the Xperia Z..
But, what I like…the headphone input is open and the phone is waterresistant! Don´t like these covers..

  • jag

i want the new media apps!! i hope those will be in xperia Z in the future update… >.<

  • jag

    haha! what a loser

  • How do you use your phone?

  • I prefer a Galaxy S2 over an S4. But nothing beats an Xperia in terms of design.

  • LOL at the dual LED.

  • hamboy

i was in the same boat, grew tired of waiting and got the SP. It takes a while to get used to a bigger device but I have no regrets

  • Afzal Zainal Rddz

So why bother in here then? Dont like the design it ok, cause it metter of personal tested and preference, but calling people effort designing things as garbage that totally insult. If you had bad and ugly nose shoulf i label it as garbage and rejected product made by your ” manufacture” ?

  • Yusuf

    Wow what a fanboy.

  • Afzal Zainal Rddz

This is a phablet, get it?

  • oohh… calling me a fanboy, I’m so hurt. I’ll go cry now plz stop. ur’re hurting me. This scares me more than when i fell down 2 floors. plz stahp

  • Afzal Zainal Rddz

Omg… How hard to understand xperia z ultra are “phablet” device :-) when note1 appear in the market at the first time, this kind of arguement happen, ” to big, to large, bla bla bla…

  • Silas Arentsen
  • nameofthewind

Same here Xperia SP have the perfect size especially for this small hands of mine

  • Carljn

That’s just a concept from Esato

  • jumbo3220
  • jumbo3220

check GSM arena preview..they said the viewing angles are much better than Zperia Z.and see the youtube hands on video i posted above, it shows viewing angles comparison

  • jumbo3220

this is a concept..i saw it before

  • jumbo3220

becoz butterfly s is 10.6mm thicker. it has space for a thicker battery which can have better capacity. personally me too having a doubt for this 3000mah capacity. if this is around 7mm thick maybe we will get a atleast 3500mah, anyways snapdragon 800 is 75% power efficiant than S4 pro so lets wish for the best :/

  • Billy de Fretes this is the best viewing angle for people who always complain. and honami surely will be better than z ultra

  • Billy de Fretes

yep.. not only that, but when smartphone reach 5 inch, people complain that smartphone should stay aroud 4 inches :)

  • disqus_08T17DzMHr

Yeh ther is Xperia Z mini…. but they Calls it Xperia ZR

  • anonymous01

    Its definitely coming to India…

  • Simão Lúcio

At last a truly good screen from sony with good contrast and excelent viewing angle

I started to cry when I heard this awesome specsheet didn’t include an LED flashlight…
Waiting for honami honami honami honami honami honami honami honami honami !!!

  • Synonymous

Agree. I’d rather choose 7.5mm body to have a decent battery. Even 8.5mm is thin with me. If ZU had an 8.5mm body then its possible to have around 4000mAh batt and probably an LED flash too.

    – XperiaV user

  • r41nier

  • r41nier

    better viewing angles :))

  • Ghareeb Saeed

I will wait for the honami monster mean while I ll keep it real with the Z

  • r41nier

    great viewing angles

  • TroloLall-Z

    Self Contridiction over 9000!!!!!

  • Mahesh

    lol :P

  • Mahesh

its using a new display tech and a new processor, both r claimed 2 be very efficient so wait untill actual usage reports come, rather than moaning here evn before it gets available -_-

  • keepOnSony

Now that this one has been done.
Waiting for the Honami, and please Sony don’t disappoint us.
    Keep the triluminous display,
    Not over 5′
    s800 of course
Battery ? not below 2600 mAh
Incredible new camera with Xeon flash
    Incredible advanced audio chipset
    Waterproof dust resistance
    New phone design
New phone interface (I’m really bored of viewing the same screen in all 2013 phone, always the same)
    + a special feature

  • Ally Sandrana

Viewing angle from the video is very good compared to Z

This is really tempting, big screen is good for viewing but bad for my pocket size haha

  • aligamz

Well….looks like Sony is getting progressively back on track. This is a very attractive device, though it is too freaking big (don’t know who would actually like a 6.4″ phone). Even though I am sorely dissapointed with my Xperia S, given the stories we all already know, my next phone will probably a Sony one.

  • Rizky Maulana

    bahasa indonesia plis :v

  • Rizky Maulana

    im in ! :v /

    aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaand cheaper than z :v

  • jumbo3220

  • dty13

does anykind of stylus come along with the phablet?

  • TechGuyChris

lol is that the best image you got!! give a zoom in or something lol

  • InspectorGadget80

I’m buying this baby when it comes to the u.s. upgrading from my XPERIA GO

  • Guest

Yeah, really don’t know what they are thinking. Sony always has to have one or two deal-breaking compromises. :(

  • aman singh

Some where, Some place Samsung has shit its pants!!!!!!!!!

  • Rene Pedroso
  • Dave

the best phablet that i ever seen

  • MyLive

Is this something to do with the ‘thickness’? So they can’t put LED flash on it?

  • MyLive

I don’t think SONY would make such a ‘complex’ back side of a phone like that these days.. ;)

  • LOL

Wonder what will ‘SamsungFans’ has to say about this.. Seen him lately on this comments section.. LOL

  • daido

    Galaxy Note 3: fml…

  • Mohammad1233214

Where I can get the Xperia Z Ultra Wallpapers

  • datq

but the ZL is actually about the same size as the ZR. even thinner. if you want something smaller the XZ, go for ZL and you’ll get the same XZ specs including the 5″ display in a smaller body.

  • kjmok

Of course I know what it is. What i’m trying to say is, I dont need a phablet right now, all I want is a Z with a snapdragon 800. It made me drool. Haha

  • kjmok

The Z Ultra might be Sony’s answer for the upcoming Note 3, just like the Z for the S4. I fell in love with the Z without needing to look at the S4.

  • Jesús López Sotelo

    I’ve got mine, LOL.

  • disqus_08T17DzMHr

but the things don’t wet ur ZL like ZR lol u gonna cry then

  • nidou bossy

here is how Xperia Z Ultra , Z and S looks in a term of size!

  • nidou bossy

jajaja, muy gracioso! lol lmao so funny,

this way i would have my own Sony store :D

    i want them too

  • Afzal Zainal Rddz

Xpz to xpz? Better xpz to honami lol…. :-p

  • Anzilleo Kristello Mozihim

    Impressive stuff from Sony.

But I do not want it as I already have the ZL because of its compact size and 5″ screen which is a more than enough pleasant viewing experience (No, I don’t care about the viewing angles) and the performance has been great since the Android 4.2.2 update. I have the Xperia Tablet Z to do those Tablet task anyway.

  • Ziich

Only if it has a larger battery as well

  • Ziich

For comparison if you take a look at the Samsung galaxy mega with a 6.3 inch screen at 720p and the snapdragon 400 with a 3200mAh battery it barely lasts about a day with normal to slightly hard usage. The z ultra’s 6.4 inch 1080p screen with the snapdragon 800 and 3000 may battery should be quite similar. This is currently my major pet peeve with the z

  • Rob

since the s800 is a new platform its hard to extrapolate anything from that. I think we just have to wait and see how it turns out.

  • Ziich

That is true since the 800 is based on the krait 400 but no matter how efficient it is a biggerbtter means even more battery life so something in the rangels of 3500mAh-4000mAh would have been nice to see

  • Camilo Uribe

    what about Honami !
