Xperia Tablet Z AOSP 4.3Sony is on the ball with the latest Android 4.3 Jelly Bean update, not only have they already given us some confirmation of which handsets will be upgraded, they also now have the latest open source code (AOSP for Android 4.3) running on three Xperia devices – the Xperia Z, Xperia ZL and Xperia Tablet Z.

This means developers can build and flash it using the AOSP device configuration on GitHub. As with previous early AOSP releases, there is a whole bunch of functionality that is not supported, therefore do not flash if you intend to use as a daily driver. Check out a video of Android 4.3 AOSP running on the Xperia Tablet Z below.

The question is: will this ‘official’ AOSP ROM be available for download when it’s fully working?
Or is it really just for showing off?

If I had an Xperia Z, I’d gladly choose this ‘official’ AOSP ROM whenever it would be fully working. I’ve got an Xperia S with an AOSP 4.2.2 ROM but some things just don’t work yet.

  • aosp

    aosp. aosp..

  • Mercast

    Vanilla Android looks ugly.

  • SonyFan

SONY is KING …OMG what happened with Sony?!?!?! @Xperia S(S3 CPU) owner…there still hope that u will get 4.3 ;)

  • Cristi13

I think that this means we’re going to see xperia z Google edition.

  • QRIO

Really ugly it does not deserves Xperia devices at all.

  • APai

but it has no stutter, which is very good. Sony’s UI is pretty heavy.

  • Ratman

In this days, Android tablet UI is pretty suck, hard to use, outdated and tasteless, I think this is the right time that SONY should be completely redesigned the user interface of the tablet, for the greater good, differences and unique, … just like SONY always did.

  • Messier82

The same AOSP build was on Xperia S too. But there was 4.1 cuz of releasing time

  • Izamanaick

Not really. For all we know, AOSP is as far as we are gonna get to the vanilla Android experience excluding Cyanogen Mod and whatnot. Personally, I’d love to see an GE Xperia Z.

  • torqe

Sony’s UI is heavy? define heavy!

  • wildfox

its the lightest compared to others like touch wiz….sony just presents a polished stock version!!!

  • wildfox

I guess the only added feature in 4.3 is restricted profiles….and some minute performance upgrades like bluetooth enhancements….nothing so revolutionary…perfectly satisfied with 4.2.2 on Z!

  • Dimos

no its not… check out an xperia z and a gs4…. you can tell that touchwiz is butter smooth and xperia z is a little choppy

  • Dimos

    it updated to 4.2

  • aligamz

    Lighter? Yes. Optimized? No.

  • Abdullah Robben

sony ui is very heavy on my xperia zl
i use nova launcher because it is lighter

  • Babylonbwoy

Like XDA front page article says :
First AOSP 4.3 Build for a Non-Nexus Device

  • APai

    anything that stutters.

  • APai

not denying polish, dint speak about others either. however, the UI has been the same for quite sometime – so, it’s not a tall expectation really.

  • sato

why whats wrong with Xperia ZR y the fuck you don’t consider it? as we have paid almost equal cost as ZL

  • Anzilleo Kristello Mozihim

Probably because the ZR has almost the same internals as the Z and ZL so there is no need for them to give it the AOSP.

  • Herman

Well Sony already has improved the Stock Android UI tablets are given by Google.
Sony doesn’t include the senseless ‘slide down notification bar’, and instead went for the older Honeycomb bottom right notification centre. Sony knows what makes sense to tablet users.

Sony has one of the better Android tablet UIs already. So Sony’s already doing a great job on it :)

  • Herman

4.3 is as much of an upgrade over 4.2 as 4.2 was over 4.1.
It’s all minor updates. In fact, I don’t even mind that my Xperia S ‘only’ has 4.1 Jelly Bean officially. At least it has Jelly Bean.

    4.3 doesn’t have anything that I need.

  • yash1610

can you give me the link to this xperia s aosp rom? thank you

  • Herman

Sure thing. A beta 3 version has just released so it should be even better than what I’m using now, for a month. Still stable enough for me:
