Android Kit KatSundar Pichai has just confirmed that the next major operating version of Android will be called Android 4.4 KitKat. For those that don’t know, Sundar Pichai is Google’s Senior Vice President overseeing Android, Chrome and Google Apps.

In his tweet he says “We now have over 1 Billion Android activations and hope this guy in front of the building keeps that momentum going“. The consensus view was that the next major iteration after Jelly Bean would be called Key Lime Pie, so Android KitKat will surprise most people. What do you think of the name? Let us know in the comments below.

  • iUi

OMG Kitkats are SO FREAKING DELICIOUS! Probably the tastiest Android version yet.

  • raxxta

    Right on, brother

  • adsada_arc

Key lime pie is pretty American, I’ve only heard about it because of dexter (when he poisons the pie). Don’t think its at all common outside of that country, so to a lot of people it wouldn’t make sense…

Kitkat on the other hand is known everywhere, and a wee fact, despite now being owned by Nestlé it was originally a British invention ;)

  • Bill Lockhart

    why??

  • Praha

    4.4 ?????

  • Bill Lockhart

With all the sweets our precious Android has been having, I’m afraid he’ll end up diabetic!
But KitKat sure does taste delicious! :P

  • ryq24

Kitkat is popular chocolate candy brand of Nestlé .

  • Pedro Cunha

  • iUi

    ROFL

  • M Usman

    err take a break

  • immortal

i bet this version will not come to xperia sola and U, as well as tipo and neo L

  • Pradeep Viswanathan R

    lol

  • Pradeep Viswanathan R

Its software versioning standards, you don’t call a minor release as 5.0

and kitkat has lot of fun intended more than a serious name now

  • [csizor

Too much chocolate. I like it!

  • [csizor

What’s the hurry for naming Android “5.0”?

  • Brad Williams

    Lmfao. :D

  • Brad Williams

    Have a break.

  • Babylonbwoy

    u killed me ;)

  • David Jay

Not a fan of the name at all. Key Lime Pie has a better ring to it than another company name.

  • David Jay

Ice Cream Sandwich is also not common outside the States but that was 4.0.

  • Richard Fong

Biggest product placement deal in the history of the world.

  • Sean Burns

Sony Xperia S won’t even get a single stick or chunk of Kitkat

  • Ayo

KitKat is not a company it’s a product!

  • David Jay

Agreed but you get my drift

  • jangaleon

i did not see that one coming!

  • Rizky Maulana

    R.I.P X-ion :'(

  • Silverwagon

    Have a KitKat!

  • nidou bossy

I finally will get my Android Kitkat 4.4 to my Xperia S after contacting them :D

  • dereknobuyuki

So, what’s L going to be?
I’m not looking forward to an Android 5.0 Lollipop or something
nor would I want it to be something like Android 5.0 Lactose-free Frappe.
(plus I doubt they’d want to deal with the negative connotations of an Android 5.0 Lemon)

    Lollipop
    Lemon meringue pie

    Licorice
    Ladyfingers
    Lime Green Robot
    What’s your pick for L?

  • dereknobuyuki

    I agree with your sentiment.
Cupcakes, Frozen Yogurt, Honeycomb, and possibly even Jelly Beans seem pretty rare where I am… although at least we have Ice Cream Sandwiches.

I think dessert awareness helps with marketing but that the USA is probably their biggest concern. Here, I rarely see any of the flavours characterized or visualized (rather just some line of text).

I suppose next we could have Lime KitKat then Matcha (green tea) KikKat, etc though =P

  • HardyHarHar

    Hah! Keylimepie my ass lol!

will xperia v get kitkat update …

  • cupcakeboy

what kind of place are u living in that cupcakes are rare??????

  • Vasilis K.

Damn! After having all those ad supported apps, we’ll now have ad-supported named Android OS’s??? That sucks!

  • Jaywalker

The name is not important. They better find a way to avoid RAM requirements because not all of us can buy a new smartphone every 6 months to keep up. Already the phones with 512 MB are useless, soon the level of 1GB will be obsolete too so…Keep it real.

  • Vasilis K.

    I ate it…

  • Mirhawk

Well not to disappoint You, but the 5.0 is not being developed for Cell phones, but for bigger screens as Laptops and all. Hence all this 4.x versions. Hopefully, an incident like Honeycomb will occur and Android will be reverted back to Cell phones.

Google needs to take a break

  • fubhknk

    Sounds delicious!

  • bimmersonygasm

My favorite candy bar!! Woohoo! Bring to the Z plz

  • APai

note 3 comes with 3gb ram, will we see note 4 coming with another gb more ? that’s as much as most laptops and computers. they need to find a way to decrease ram requirement

  • Nhaangot T. Ukhi

    Microsoft bought nokia
    Google bought motorola
    Google acquired nestle kitkat line
    Canada bail out blackberry
    Samsung bought apple
    Japan rules the world
China bought usa lol lol lol

  • gaseki

Of course they’re not paying… It’s an accident Nestle has Nexus as top prize in their new competition (and a little green android on KitKat packaging) and google names next android KitKat

  • dereknobuyuki

super late reply but cupcakes are rare in Japan.
Recently saw that a big chain “Mr.Donuts” currently has cupcakes but it will be a limited-time promotion and then it may be years before we see more cupcakes.
