Sony Xperia Z1 press release leaked, full spec list revealed

by XB on 3rd September 2013

in Rumours, Xperia Z1

Xperia Z1_PR_1We have managed to obtain the full press release for the Sony Xperia Z1 ‘Honami’, which Sony is planning to fully unveil tomorrow. We have seen so many leaks for the device that we know most of the specs, therefore the press release doesn’t allude to too many surprises. However, there are some interesting bits of info we didn’t know.

First of all lets recap on the specs. The Sony Xperia Z1 will come with a 5-inch 1080 x 1980 pixel resolution TFT display. Like the Xperia Z Ultra it comes with a TRILUMINOS display and X-Reality for mobile. The Xperia Z1 will be water resistant and rated IP55/IP58, above that of the Xperia Z (IP55/IP57). Sony continues to use the OmniBalance design and this time includes a “solid one-piece aluminium frame”.

It will be powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 MSM8974 chipset which includes a 2.2GHz quad-core processor and Adreno 330 graphics. It will also have 2GB RAM, 16GB internal storage, a microSD memory card slot and a 3000mAh battery capacity.

On the camera front, Sony says that the Xperia Z1 has the “world’s leading camera in a smartphone”. It backs this up by saying “independent testing has confirmed that Xperia Z1 provides the best overall image quality of all leading smartphones”. However, we don’t know whether this includes the Lumia 1020? We hope to find out more on this tomorrow.

In terms of camera specs, the rumours were spot on. Sony is using a 1/2.3-inch 20.7MP Exmor RS CMOS image sensor. This will include Sony’s G Lens (27mm wide angle and bright F2.0 aperture) and “BIONZ for mobile” image processing engine. Sony also talks about a suite of Xperia camera apps that will launch with the device, much of these we have already seen in previous leaks. This includes apps such as Info-eye (visual search), AR effect, Timeshift burst and Social live.

It sounds like the PlayMemories Online app will also be updated to include a new ‘All Sync’ feature that allows users to auto-upload all of their photos (much like Dropbox) but without any storage limitation. What’s not clear is whether this is at original resolutions or compressed. Sony will also launch a new app called TrackID TV, allowing users to search and share information on TV shows. This will only be available in select countries including Germany, UK, France, Japan and the US.

Sony details a number of accessories for the camera including the QX10/QX100 ‘lens-style’ cameras we’ve heard so much of recently, the Smart Imaging Stand IPT-DS10M and Smartphone Tripod SPA-MK20M. Other accessories include the Bluetooth Music Receiver BM10 we saw leaked recently and the Miracast Wireless Display IM10.

The Xperia Z1 has dimensions of 144 x 74 x 8.5mm and weighs 170 grams. The handset will launch with Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean in three colours (black, purple and white). We can also confirm that Sony expects the handset to go on sale globally during September. Great news for Xperia fans and CEO Kazuo Hirai is certainly delivering on his promise to shorten the lead times between announcement and launch.

  • ruba

I can’t see IR remote like xperia ZL… maybe I will wait for 2014 flagship T.T

  • Michael Hofmann

Isn’t it to make up for the on-screen home keys?

  • Battal Aljadei

don’t, and don’t expect walkman chip either, because sony want to force you to buy their separated camera lens for phones, and their bluetooth speakers instead of making a smartphone with a best camera and best music chip !

    this is SONY .

  • Thai Vuth

my fault , it should be 1920×1080 for FHD :(

  • Raj Singh

I wish it (and the Ultra) had an IR blaster.
I love having it on my Xperia tablet.
Looks like a pretty solid device though.

  • Raj Singh

Which phone do you think doesn’t have a TFT display?

  • feres13

Hopefully Sony learned it’s lesson this time and won’t release amazing camera hardware with half baked camera software, Samsung and Apple are using the same optics but they end up with better results. Still i’m dissapointed by the lack of OIS and especially a Xenon flash on a camera centric phone, people who say that a flash is useless are ones who use an LED flash. Still i’m going to say it : the phone is too big, i tried a Z and it had more than enough bezels for a confortable landscape, 140*70 would’ve been perfect. I’m dissapointed by the lack of IR, seems to be the thing for 2013 and i can see how it can be useful. 32GB would’ve been perfect since you can’t store apps on the SD card, but it’s nice to see an SD card on a dlagship that isn’t ugly (*ahem*Samsung*Ahem). I think i’ll go with the white one.

  • Carljn

It’s been said so many times, and I can’t understand why it isn’t common knowledge on a tech blog. 95% of all smartphone displays are TFT. This includes all Sony Xperias, Galaxy S 1-4, HTC One, all iPhones and pretty much any modern phone you can think of.

Last month we were watching my aunts video of her wedding in 1994 trust me I would have killed for HD.

people here are looking for something that xperia z1 doesn’t have and then say i only wanted that thing and honami doesn’t!! so disappointment!!
    itreally make me laugh :D

  • ryq24

The problem with waterproof and dust resistant phone is the need to remove the cover every time you need to charge the phone which in due time will loosen the cover. Hope sony comes out with a non waterproof version like what they did with Z when they come out wit the Zl

  • Friendly

Honestly, isn’t weight the last thing you worry about when you’re buying a new phone? xD

  • ryq24

How many people really use charging dock? Charging docks are expensive. Even if one does uses, since most people put casing on their phone so that means they have to remove casing before charging just like opening cover flap before charging . Not a very convenient thing to do..

  • Xyor

yeah…shitny is planning on releasing a brand new series of walkman…

  • AIBO

    Sony’s such a coward that’s why it’s going down!

  • dfsef

well the disappointment has begun. i’m disappointed because lg g2 destroys it with all its features.

    wishful thinking? hopeful thinking?

  • Krasimir Argirov

I don’t understand why someone need “phone quality” 4k video and where did the same person will watch it as for now… on youtube, on a phone or on a laptop..? Pure bulshit.
If someone need 4k video then go and buy other phone… oh wait, there`s no such thing. Then why crying? Go get a life and stop being internet troll. :P

  • Ghareeb Saeed

Being a loyal Sony fan over the years it’s just something that you can call it addiction, on a serious note though I was expecting a device that’d deliver all everything at once for example the “S-Master Audio Chip” which is not included and for a fact I can tell you the music on my XperiaZ it sucks big time comparing it to em other brands. However, I still will go for it I will pick the white one over the other two colors.

  • Thai Vuth

indeed , not all of us use charging dock , but the cover flap of ZU( may be same as Z1) is improved . i think it is not fragile to break as the one with Xperia S. anyway , the water proof phone nowadays need that. :3

  • Lucian

I love the camera part!!! 1/2.3 inch sensor with G lens and BIONZ image processor!! Oh yea!!

  • Guest

Just this? If Z1 really is the best of Sony… really Sony? this is so shitty!!!!!!!! fuckin’ shame on you sony. So disappointed in every way

We will wait until next year’s flagship!

  • Mani

Plz anyone can tell me what does it mean 4K and S-master chip?? I don’t know about it even I am using Xperia Z….

  • jason

because apparently there is no phone recording 4k at the moment

  • Mint

Pretty good overall. Still thicker, wider, taller, heavier than the Z. Decent try Sony, but I don’t think it’ll be able to compete against phones like Note III, G2 and iPhone 5S. Maybe next time.

  • KBadOne

The S-Master offers full digital reproduction of audio, allows for superb noise reduction and distortion free sound. Faithfully reproduces all the details from the highs to the lows.

    User Benefits:
    Improved noise reduction level
Improved sound reproduction (especially for low frequency range)
Maintains high sound resolution, no matter how low or high the volume

  • yohanes

I just wondering how much the price is….????

  • Kaloyskie

Possibly on their 2014 flaghips. They just announced 4k so it’s just relatively new.

  • Felix

It’s valid, but [people should keep in mind that the newest flagships have screens larger than 5″ (LG G2, 5.5″), so overall, the Z1 isn’t much bigger.

  • KBadOne

I think the MDR-10BT mentioned in the press release is the successor to MDR-1RBT. If that is the case it will most likely feature Bluetooth 3.0 with Apt-X and built in S-Master digital amplification (full digital reproduction of audio tracks free from noise and distortion) and DSEE (offers natural, spacious sound by restoring the depth and detail lost in the audio compression process)

But here is the catch! it might be priced @ $400 like the MDR-1RBT

S-Master amplifier is made by Sony and exclusive to their products including Walkman
    So the answer is no

    As I posted before

    leak  (lk)
    v. leaked, leak·ing, leaks
    1. To permit the escape, entry, or passage of something through a breach or flaw: rusted pipes that were beginning to leak; a boat leaking at the seams.
    2. To escape or pass through a breach or flaw: helium leaking slowly from the balloon.
    3. Informal To become publicly known through a breach of secrecy: The news has leaked.

There now you know what the meaning of a leak is . As in its not official so wont have all the details thats why its called a leak so now you can go back to asking stupid questions somewhere els.

Do you think the image stabilizer is a stabilizer optical or digital? And then xperia z1 record Full HD video at 60 fps or 30 fps only?

  • bandini75

Many thanks for your answer KbadOne! :)

  • Izamanaick

You can’t exactly blame Sony for that. AT&T backed out of the deal that Sony was making with them but then they wanted back in but Sony said no due AT&T’s prior refusal of the deal and that Sony now have a deal with T Mobile, so they have no obligation to make the phone compatible with AT&T’s frequencies.

  • tay

We? Are you suffering from multiple personalities?

  • Pradeep Viswanathan R

lol no, the S here is Sony not Samsung :)

  • Pradeep Viswanathan R

My primary music device is my phone, i use very good in-ear-monitor to listen to music, however i am just a normal user or probably a music lover.

Will i notice the difference with the SMASTER chip and does it translate to music enjoyment?

  • DrKrFfXx

I have a Xperia Z and with the Clear Audio option it sounds totally artificial. Totally,

I also rock a Walkman Z1060 in my other side pocket, which has the S Master MX chip, and the difference in sound quality between the two is night and day.

Clear Audio, xLoud, clear bass, and all the other stuff is shit. It doesn’t compare to the real thing, which is the S Master MX.

I wanted the Z1 to have S Master MX to have both devices blended into one, now I will skip the Z1, the only thing that gets me interested in it is the battery, which is bigger than the Z.

  • Pradeep Viswanathan R

i thought Qualcom already killed that using a universal LTE receiver like the one in the Nexus 7 2013?

  • Pradeep Viswanathan R

It does, the awesome hardware dramatically will improve your experience in every-bit of the phone you use.

  • Pradeep Viswanathan R

Note 3, no thanks that’s a different kind of phone – This one is for the masses, the new flagship!

  • Pradeep Viswanathan R

Well, the phone can play 4K but down-scaled. its like when you had a 720p display, your phone played a 1080p last year.

The capability of 4K connects back to the power of the Snapdragon 800 and 4k TV’s are out.

  • Pradeep Viswanathan R

i thought Sonys on Xperia Z ultra does 4K, either way all Snapdragon 800 devices will do 4K!

  • Pradeep Viswanathan R

What do you want, two cell phones in one or some black magic in a phone. Technically it stands equally good on the hardware and little better if you prefer Sony.

Like Chris asks, can you tell us like what?

  • Pradeep Viswanathan R

It will get used to and the benefits will make you forget the weight.

  • Mint

And yet, I doubt the Note III will be much bigger than the Z1.

  • Pradeep Viswanathan R

    may be you are right.

  • Kaloyskie

You have a point. But wouldn’t it be better if the powerful hardware is utilized for new sony tech? That’s what I am waiting for.

  • Pradeep Viswanathan R

I get your point, you are looking for some kind of innovation, never done before stuff, is that right?

I don’t know of new Sony tech that can be use this, may be can you give us an example.

well, if you have used the new flagships – specially HTC one (i heard s4 was buggy and slow initially), you may not go back to your Xperia Z – the improvements is tremendous and i would love Sony reaching and stabilizing that level before they start “innovating”

I am not sure why Sony did not put the good camera tech and other things here in the XZ ultra!

bare in mind that these bezels are there bc the phone is water resitent. Space is needed for the sealing components. Just looks at the Xperia Z and ZL to see how the sealing adds bulk.

    1/2.3-inch sensor.

It is not that much, right?

  • dfsef

when it comes to marketing wars, even the most senseless addition to the specs sheet matters.

snapdragon already supports 4k recording. they should’ve just harnessed it. maybe release it as an additional feature in a firmware update.

  • Pradeep Viswanathan R

I don’t know if you seem to have ideas of any unique feature that you may want ? But before building unique features, get the phone stand in par with others is my thought.

This is the correct time to use the updated hardware, it contributes a lot to the experience.

The improved hardware actually contributes lot to the “experience” and
it counts big time for me. Ppl have bought iPhone only for the smooth
    experience it gave overall.

Games? i guess everybody plays some, that’s a big area which iPhone had been leading so easily all these years. The better processor dramatically improves so much gaming and general usage and performance does not need any mention.

It is a known fact that Sony has always been lagging on adoption of a processors all these years and this is the first time that Snapdragon 800 is used on time – when everyone else uses it. I am happy that Sony is doing it correctly now.

Imagine using a Snapdragon 800 Next year when Qualcomm comes up with Snapdragon 900 or 1000. That kills the capability of the phone and results in less adaptability of the phone which explains why Sony being a great company has had less adoption of Smartphones.

  • Pradeep Viswanathan R

Bigger than other camera phones :) but not as big as the Nokia 1020

  • bandini75

“I can tell you the music on my XperiaZ it sucks big time comparing it to other brands”. This is very good to know.

I am contemplating buying the Z1 (or the Note 3), but I use my smartphone as my exclusive mp3 player and I need a REALLY good player. So, this could be a dealbreaker.

Sad to learn that the Sony is dissapointing in this respect :(
    Other people can confirm?

  • Babylonbwoy

None of Sony Smartphones has it, and from the leaked Z1 specs it doesn’t seems to have it either. They only used it in Sony Tablet S and their High End Walkman Players

  • KBadOne

Yes there is a big difference! I own Walkman X and the sound quality makes the XPERIA Z and other smartphones sounds bland. You can notice more detail in music, less noise produced and higher bass and volume, even by using a ur average headphones.

Never mind that look at the Battery life!!!
    Xperia Z Xperia Z1
    GSM talk time: 11hrs 13.8hrs (830Min)
    Standby time GSM : 550hrs 880hrs
    Talk time UMTS: 14Hrs 15hrs
    Standby time UMTS: 550hrs 850hrs
    Music listening time 40hrs 110hrs
    Video playback time 5.5hrs 6,6hrs

I have never understood why they could improve battery life so drastically in one are but not as drastically in others

I know what are they thinking? They could kill themselves, or in the worst case, other people too.

nor as big as the Nokia 808 or even the Nokia N8…

… so it’s the same size image sensor as the Samsung Galaxy Camera and Samsung Galaxy S4 Zoom. I think that’s respectable (at least in a phone that still manages to look like a phone)

This gotta be a joke. With that crap led flash,
gonna be crushed by S4 zoom and Lumia 1020.

I remember something about liquid magnetic speakers & a sony walkman chip, those would have made this phone that much better…

  • Andre Winters

I was hoping for that too, maybe it’s just not listed in these specs we will find out tomorrow

  • bandini75

    Finally, nothing special.

Very disappointing. No removable battery, 16GB storage only, APN sensor not as big as expected, no S-master chip, no xenon flash.
Sony failed to provide the phone of my dreams.

  • bandini75

What’s the purpose? THis phone was almost announced as a “photo-phone”…

The disappointment is huge. No reason for me to chose this Sony. I will go with S4 or Note 3, which specifications are clearly better. Sadly Sony missed the occasion to provide the ultimate smartphone that I was ready to buy……

  • bandini75

    Thank you once again :)

  • hans

Seriously now, so few of people who keep their phone more than 3 years, even 6 months is eternity plus it comes With the unremovable battery. So no need to hurry the 4k really, in time it goes mainstream i’ll bet you have a new phone to do that.

Anyone can tell me that what does it mean 4K and S-master chip??? I don’t have idea about it even I am using Xperia Z…

  • fried_egg

last thing you think of, but first thing you notice. and the S already is easy enough to slip when grabbing off a table… more weight, more damage if it falls on something solid

  • imparanoic

z1060 is very decent, but it’s predecessor x1050/x1060 is the best, s-master digital amp and built in noise cancellation, only hi end DAP can compete with this but at higher price level.
so far no phone can compete with this sound quality

  • F1orce

The actual sony display is nice. But too bad Sony never takes advantage of their displays. Instead the entire GUI themes are bland and dark colours.

Look at Samsung and see how they make use of vibrant colours for their user interface..

  • PowerSonic

can we get 2k atleast? :P

  • PowerSonic

i meant to say that the hardware looks capable, doesnt it?

  • Tardar Sauce

I have my Xperia X10 for 3 years now, the flap is not the same as on never models (like Z) but I charge it once or twice per day and the flap is still like new. And you don’t have to buy expensive Sony docks. This thing is really simple; a plastic stand with two pins and a charger; I’m sure that it would be possible to find a cheap chinese version for 5-6 $. And if the case has a hole where the pins for dock are, you won’t need to remove it. Furthermore, I hope that this phone will have a magnetic charging. If it doesn’t have it, there would be cases with it integrated. So you could charge your phone without opening the flaps or having the dock. This magnetic charge is one of the best things ever invented and every new phone should have it. I’m too lazy to connecting charger and opening the flap and I would also be too lazy to put the phone in dock. But having a plain surface on your desk where you can just put your phone when you don’t use it is great for us lazy persons. Furthermore, your phone will always be fully charged :)

  • Tardar Sauce

I agree with you but S4 zoom is not a phone. I’m sorry, but you can’t call that a phone! So it’s impossible to compare these two. But I saw a few phones that can capture decent pictures even with low-light so I hope that it’s great camera will do the same.

  • Actually the dark theme (which easily changes anyway) helps in making the screen “blend” with the bezel. What I would like to see though is AMOLED. Hard to leave my Galaxy Note’s fantastic screen.

  • 4K video means record video in 3840×2160 resolution.

    Sony has deconstructed its
best smartphone and put it back together into something amazing. The Xperia Z1
(codename Honami) is a powerful, camera-centric flagship backed up by the QX
line of attachable camera modules and the SmartWatch 2. It has 5 inches
of scratch-resistant LCD screen, with fullHD 1080 x 1920 pixels resolution and
16M colour depth, Android 4.2 Jelly Bean | 2200MHz Quad Core processor in
    Qualcomm MSM8974 Snapdragon 800 chipset with 2GB RAM, Adreno 330 GPU, 16GB
internal memory, expandable to 64GB, 20MP of rear camera with fullHD recording,
2MP of front camera, 4G LTE, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, GPS (with A-GPS), microUSB
    connectivity, 3000mAh Li-ion battery.

Looks like a great phone, only downside is that it is RIDICULOUSLY HUGE!!

    Seriously Sony, WTF??

    144x74mm @ 170g ???

That’s even bigger and heavier than the S4-Active! (which is a RIDICULOUSLY HUGE phone itself)

Even that original S4 is too big, and the Z1 goes 2cm(!!) taller and 1cm(!) wider….

Amazing specs, but I will never buy such a huge huge phone.

Waiting for the mini version, hopefully it will have the same exact
specs (including the large battery), and with a significant (!) size
