Unlocking Xperia Z1 bootloader breaks camera functionality

unlock xperiaReports are surfacing that Sony Xperia Z1 owners who unlock their bootloader face being unable to use the camera. A number of users have said that once the phone had its bootloader unlocked, they were unable to use the camera functionality on stock firmware, despite working without issue previously.

The only way around this is to back up your TA partition (to save your DRM keys), prior to unlocking your bootloader and then restore it if you want to use the camera. The Xperia Z1 is not at the moment listed as a supported device on the Sony Mobile unlock bootloader site, but then again neither is the Xperia Z Ultra and no Z Ultra owners are reporting similar problems as far as we are aware. Prospective owners beware, if you want to tinker with the bootloader, make sure you back up the TA partition first.

Thanks DooMLoRD!

    SAY WHAA??? WTF sony?

  • Jonfensu

Wow, What a shame, Sony! Well, there is no problem If we lose DRM keys or BE, But CAMERA?

  • schattenkonig58

Hope Ther will be a Fix :(

  • ravi

is there any way to get back those drm keys.

  • Kristian Kenneth Carl

That is why it is important to read first. Since you are tinkering with the device to bother with the bootloader, backing up TA partition is just a breeze.

people crying out loud about this should never flash a phone because they are not aware of the risks or they make a fuzz about everything, its a non officially released phone! and the damage can be avoided so dont complain… yet

  • kiikooo

    Owners? It is out already?

  • SAS Andro

Its interesting … But who will responsible for those who have lost their cameras??

Fix? Fix for what? It’s not Sony’s problem if you unlock your device and then then it gives some problems!

  • DooMLoRD

there should a be fix soon…

  • DooMLoRD

there could be a fix for this via firmware update so chill out… dont be in a hurry to unlock the bootloader…

I dont ask to developers but to 99,9% others:

WHY UNLOCK THE Z1 BL NOW??? WHY??????????

  • ka ku

Dooms lord ur the most to answer this :-/ i see in most the reviews thats xperia z1 battery performance is as same as or a bit better then xperia Z, is that true ??

  • jack

the phone is out already ?

  • Battal Aljadei

    because we hate`s limit !

  • knightpt

Doesn’t matter what answers anyone can give atm since battery consumption can improve after a couple updates and i think the units out there are not even with the final production rom.

  • boosook

Bootloader unlocking is officially supported by sony, and one of the reasons why some could choose a sony product, so it’s sony’s problem. The only problem is that the z1 is not yet supported.

    Custom Kernel + Recovery !

  • Babylonbwoy

If you back up your TA partition then you can get them back, if no back up done before unlocking then it’s lost forever

  • knightpt

the people who did that to a phone that is not even released to the publid and that is not even officialy suported to unlock the BL by sony ?

    Yeah, those.

  • Babylonbwoy

And specially THAT (or THIS ?) camera ! 6 months of teasing for this results…

well i was thinking about buying Z1 well no chance sony and forget about my money! I know you (sony)read this

  • Babylonbwoy

Tried to pre order it from france since day one but french eshop has fucking bug that doesn’t allow to pre order the offer Z1+BTN200M for one more €. tried everything, called them all, sent tons of email, twiter, facebook. NONE of them fixed the fucking bug. I’m still thinking about it but there’s big chance that I’m done with Sony.

Xiaomi will release the MI3 at end of october, it cost 350€ (16G and 450 for 64G) and has same spec than Z1, exactly not really same coz no 20.7MP but “only” 13Mp, Now there is good importer for this brand in europe so no risk like it was the case with china’s shenzen order usually…

    Look at this : http://www.xiaomi.com/mi3

If you don’t know it means you don’t need it.

    or read/search http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2153167

That is what I meant! Z1 is not yet officially supported! So, we can talk about a “fix” when Z1 is supported officially and yet gives problems!

  • gregosor78

Like Bravia Engine ? Perhaps to protect some algorithm ? It is clever

  • HardyHarHar

My guess is the bionz part of the camera checks for the DRM keys and if it cannot detect the keys it stops functioning… So does this mean to be able to use the camera with an unlocked bootloader we would have to disable bionz in the kernel or library for the camera to work? But of course this would end up having a lower quality image I guess?

With a number of devices unlocking the bootloader erases the whole system. Sometimes manufacturers change their stance on allowing people to unlock their bootloaders.

So it makes sense to unlock your bootloader sooner than later,if you think you’ll every want to unlock it.

Let’s imagine in the future you want to install the Google Play Edition firmware and you need to unlock the boot loader but Sony meanwhile did an update and made it impossible?

This is why I unlocked my XZU the first day I had it.

  • nooch

Right, they fixed it. Thanks Sony.
