Android 4.4 custom ROM hits the Xperia Z

by XB on 5th November 2013

in Firmware, Xperia Z and Xperia ZL

image_thumb72Whilst we wait for official news on Sony’s upgrade plans to Android 4.4 KitKat, xda-developer pabx has just released an AOSP Android 4.4 custom ROM for the Xperia Z. The ROM is surprisingly stable for those that have tried it, with some people reporting of issues with Google Calendar syncing. If you want to give it a go head over to xda for download links and further information.

Thanks Ben and Felix!

    Photoflop :P
That is Nexus screen, not Xperia; look at the on-screen buttons :)

  • y.Thuva Thuva

acro s 4.4 KitKat release date

  • Ambroos

It’s a custom ROM based on AOSP, so of course it’s going to have the AOSP on-screen buttons (just like the Nexus devices).

  • Harut Hajin

  • lol. you have a better chance of winning the lottery.

  • pain six path

    Your phone got 3 version 2.3 to 4.0.4 to 4.1.2, I think it’s enough.

  • Ani

    Anything for SP or not??

  • Ben Lim

    For ion please..

  • ProWeirdo

Only two updates. 2.3 was stock ROM. Second of all, during the time Sony could release it with 4.0.4, they decided to make the stock ROM a much worse system version – 2.3 -_- It’s definitely not enough.

  • 3rdflyleaf

Sony is going to announce a new Phone with 4.3 and then promise to upgrade it to 4.4. While every one will be announcing new phone with 4.4 out of the box.

That means you can use your comment as a reason again.

  • 3rdflyleaf

I haven’t tried any custom rom.
Does using this custom rom means losing the Small app feature?

  • Joyanto Kumer

xperia v have any upgrate android version?

  • farlaks

3 version means just two update. and in real just 2 version i.e one update (4.0.4 to 4.1.2).

  • Alexander Aulin Söderqvist Here you go! If you don’t mind CyanogenMod. Hopefully they will port to 4.4 after cyanogenmod has done the heavy workload.

  • pain six path

Like Samsung galaxy s2 right?. S2 was 2.3 then upgraded to 4.0.4 then to 4.1.2, it was Samsung’s flagship, why nobody complained? Don’t you think you want so much from Sony?

  • JEp

    Wow! Thanks! :D

heyyyyyyy what about the Sony’s first flagship device Xperia S???
plsss sony don’t leave us behind…
    we have trusted u… :( :(

  • farlaks

That is a joke rite? lololol what a comparison.

soon ;) pic by Brin Taylor

  • Ani

If this is real I am thankfull to you :-)
    Well any source??

  • Okazuma

    C’on guys…stop it.

Xperia S is no longer a flagship and support ended with the 4.1.2 (after 19 month from the market release) for many reasons ( 1st, no drivers from qualcomm for the 4.2.2)
Let’s not ask for updates Xperia S

P.S: From an Xperia S user who will never buy a Sony anymore

  • Okazuma

The 2012 series was released with an older version of Android (2.3) when 4.0 it was already on the market for 6 months

S and P had to have 4.0 out of the box but it did not happen and have received only 1 major release (4.0.4 to 4.1.2 )

  • Okazuma

In a news for LG G2 there is a table (franch Currier) with various smart and dates for the update.
All the Z series will have 4.4 in the future while SP will have 4.3 in late november

  • Okazuma

Only Z series will have 4.4, SP 4.3 and maybe T will have 4.2.2

  • Ani

    Thank you for the information.
And SP will ever receive 4.4?

  • Okazuma

I really don’t know but Sony don’t upgrade his mid-range for long time.
I think it will stop with the 4.3 or will have the 4.4 next year because there is no reasons to upgrade 5 smarts(Z series) to 4.4 and only SP to 4.3

  • Ani

    You are right.
Actually I am happy with 4.3 only and dont dream about any more updates to this device.

  • Sharath

get ur bootloader unlocked and install a custom ROM…. Simple…

  • Asad Ahmed

but even they are providing updates to xperia L and xperia M to 4.3 so i think SP will definitely get 4.4

  • Okazuma

L and M are Mid-range like SP and they all land to 4.3 when Z and the others will recive direcly the 4.4 in December/January.
For this reason i think they will stop to 4.3

  • Guest

    L is low end, it goes L, SP, Z. I don’t know about M.

  • mudassir

What about Xperia tx? It started with 4.0.4 and then to 4.1.2 within 3 months after launch.

  • saif

Considering the fact the 4.4 requires less resources M might skip both 4.2 and 4.3. Hope so.

  • j_ee

I’m still a bit perplexed about the naming scheme. The site says “Support for zeus devices is WIP”
I have an xperia p. does that apply here?

  • Gitarooman

T and V are almost clones in terms of interior hardware so will probably be updated together.

  • Okazuma

internal HW is the same (cpu, etc etc) but Sony has strange market strategy..

Tell that to Arc/Arc S user, they’re still on 4.0..

  • pain six path

That was sony Ericsson era,but now is only sony.

  • Guest

Of course that was Sony Ericsson era, but the points is both devices released on the same year and both devices is a flagships, it’s just Sony abandon it!

  • Asad Ahmed

sorry dear, xperia L nd M are entry level mid end while xperia SP is upper mid end phone.

  • DrKrFfXx

Custom roms will never be as stable as an official rom. There alway be a battery drain, a feature not working, a whatever causing a crash, causes a lower camera quality. Been there, done that. Shamefully there is no custom rom which is as reliable as an official rom.

  • Ryouta Ganz Jinlanon

    What about ZL?

  • Boris J

    OMG……….. Where is 4.4 for Z1 ?

  • ani

Why is every one just blaming sony they.have huge number of updates and. Fixes you cant jyst release. A new.version.right after Google. Releases.. Secondly everyone forgot. Sony was first to update its z . Serieswith 4.2 Samsung has still not updated note 2 or s3 so be patient

  • Jiyeon90

Does bravia engine work if you unlock bootloader?

  • jag

Where is my Symbian 3 update for my Satio??! I hate you sony for dumping my satio for X10!! I felt so betrayed! This is what I’ve felt last time when my Satio did not even got updated. Lol

  • Michael Hernandez

Yes, the stock rom have some nice apps and features of sony like X-reality engine, ps3 controller compatibility, xloud, xclear, camera UI and features, the launcher UI of course. In a few words, you will be installing a pure android nexus style, if use the custom, adding that a custom rom never will be stable like stock. I’ll wait for the stock rom :) for my Z1.

  • Michael Hernandez

Calm down, soon soon :), i’m waiting too.

  • Michael Hernandez

    Sorry :(.
    Symbian is officially dead

  • Michael Hernandez

i agree with you. Better wait for a official update.

  • jag

yup… poor symbian. good thing android came. ^^

  • Michael Hernandez

NOT ONLY, but maybe the first xperia serie in update.

  • Michael Hernandez

    Toll me. I had a SE P1i, samsung innov8, nokia E65, N93, N97 mini & N8.

  • Rob

codename Zeus is on the msm7x30 based Mogami platform, public name is Xperia Play.

Your phone is not msm7x30 based, and thus is not supported by the LegacyXperia Project. Xperia P is NovaThor U8500 based.

  • jag

NOVEMBER 7 2013 FOR Z1 KITKAT??? that is tomorrow in our timeline. LOL! i hope it’s true

  • Harut Hajin

HAHAH U must 100 % sure . I know it , only Xperia Z series can get 4.4 Update . Xperia ion , TX , T , SL , S , V , SP , J and all other old phones not over than 4.1.2 . Sorry for poor English , But Im not only Sony fan I work there and know it 100% Whet Where or How . TY

  • Harut Hajin

    XPERIA Z , ZL , ZR , Z1 , Z Ultra = 4.4

  • Hjopp

    Keep dreaming..

  • pradeep

Samsung S2 was launched 10months earlier than xperia S. Who told you that snapdragon S3 processor did not support android 4.2+?its just there is no major difference in terms of stability and performance.

  • pradeep

who told u that that hardwares of xperia S did not support android 4.2+?
its just xperia S has best android 4.1.2 in stability and performance tell me 1 bug that worried u to upgrade ur xperia S?

  • Jobs

    Qualcomm did..

It’s no coincidence that both devices are based on the same SoC and ended up on the same android version.

  • lol

u guys wrong, E is entry level, M is low end, L is low mid, SP is high mid

  • lol

but official update suck like 4.2.2 in X L got many prob

  • Okazuma

Xperia S HW can support 4.4 too but without the drivers for the Snapdragon 3 you can’t cook a rom and Sony can’t prepare an official Upgrade.

Almost all the smarts with S3 are 2 years old and you know the policy of the Android manufactures

Here you can see all the S3 smart.
It’s sad but true, Xperia S is old (for Sony)

  • 3rdflyleaf

    Thanks for the reply. :)

  • Brona

Why? HTC One S and Samsung Galaxy S II was released around the same time with the same hardware (more or less). Both ended on 4.1 so why is Sony so bad for doing the same? I don’t get it.

  • Michael Hernandez

So, you’re astronaut…^_^ ok, try to think something…

O_o According “SAINT Google”: 4.4 requires less resources & works on phones until with 512MB of RAM. Sony must have the 4.4 source code, But still exists other problem: +_+ DRIVERS, remember, SONY don’t make the cpu’s. For that, sony needs the android 4.4 cpu drivers from qualcomm by each cpu used in the other series. Most of the update problems roots in the software implementation compatibility…OF COURSE, the flagships (high-end, monsters, uber-phones, how you want to say it ^_^) updates first, because are the most probable and popular to have new drivers each new endroid version launched.

TIP: Look for some SONY software development employee, O_O and ask him by android 4.4 drivers to S800, S600, S4 pro, S4 plus, S3, Mediatek and ALL OTHERS cpu’s used in the other series +_+, after tell me which phone updates and which not ^_^.

  • Shaheen Pak

still i dont get any up dates in saudi arabia y it is always late for us

  • Tomas

So I can’t find any updates on my z1 yet. Has it been launched?

  • pradeep

thats what i said its just it has stable 4.1.2 almost 20months old cellphone and also many new xperia devices are available in market thats y sony not foccusing on it :)

  • pradeep

but i think Xperia S ll get one more major upgrade :)

  • Harut Hajin

HAHAHAH I said that Im work in Sony , and U can see now on XperiaBlog THAT ONLY Z SEERIES GETING 4.4
