Xperia Z Android 4.4 “Testing scheduled” according to Vodafone Australia

by XB on 20th February 2014

in Android, Firmware, Xperia Z and Xperia ZL

Xperia Z photoNow that the bulk of Android 4.3 firmware updates are out of the way (we’re still to hear news on the update cycle for the Xperia C, L and M), attention will soon turn to the timing of Android KitKat updates. Sony has already confirmed a selection of handsets to receive the update including the Xperia Z, Xperia ZL, Xperia Tablet Z, Xperia Z Ultra and Xperia Z1 (the Xperia Z1 Compact is also likely to receive it too).

Therefore the timing is probably about right to see Android 4.4 KitKat firmware being tested by carriers. Vodafone Australia has confirmed that testing is scheduled for the Xperia Z KitKat update. However, we still have no further timelines for now. We would expect Sony to formally announce KitKat timings within the next few weeks, so we’ll keep you posted.

xperia z users your treat is coming very soon :) :)

  • Abhijeet Mishra

Really hope KitKat comes soon. Both Samsung and HTC have started their rollouts, and even LG seems poised to offer KitKat soon. It looks like Google has been on their case for a quick rollout this time, and hopefully Sony is also working fast. Bought an Xperia Z1 after losing my Note 3, and one particular issue is the lack of RAM. Not because it’s 2GB, but because the phone seems to keep around 1-1.2GB of RAM dedicated to something at all times, leaving only around 500 MB for multitasking. Saw a lot of people report this while others say there’s no RAM shortage, hoping KitKat reduces the problem (tried factory resetting and stuff, always the same.)

  • notbadsony

not bad at all. at least Z user onwards are getting multiple updates.

  • Mirrorpurple

Oh look Xperia M will also get 4.3! (and 4.4 of course, It should run well) :)

  • Reynaldi Sutrisno

Wow nowadays sony is quicker in realising firmware update. I love Sony UI most in android theming (vs touchwiz and the other custom UI). Please come fast I cannot wait more :))

i just still wonder if ZR will get this XD

  • kuro

did you experience any particular lagging despite short of RAM? because my Z has almost the same condition, but haven’t felt any lagging yet.

  • Dmitry Perets

SONY please put 4.1.2 back to XV =)

  • Abhijeet Mishra

Nope, but the apps get killed too quickly, like barely two or three recently used apps stay open sometimes. It’s very inconvenient, especially after coming from the Note 3. There is something dedicating too much RAM for some unknown service/app, because no matter how many apps I kill or freeze, it refuses to go under 1GB of used RAM.

  • XV user

Wtf we want upgrade not downgrade lolll..:))))

  • Jorge Torres

    We want #KitKatOnXperiaV! :D

  • Abhijit Biswas

Mediatek has pushed out any drives for android beyond 4.2 yet so Xpeira C will have to wait for that….. Now for Xperia L & M, rest assured atleast L will get 4.4, M should too but we don’t know what Sony will do!

Meanwhile pls sign my petition to get ‘move apps to sd card’ functionality in 4.4 kitkat update!
    https://www.change.org/petitions/sony-we-customers-want-a-move-apps-to-sd-card-functionality-added-to-all-our-sony-phones-via-software-update#share

  • Abhijit Biswas

Those are skipping two build numbers from

    15.1.xxx to 15.4.xxx and 15.2.xxx to 15.5.xxx

    Looks like kitkat to me!

  • Abhijit Biswas

Yes I did, and there is a big bug, wifi keeps on ceasing to work, it shows as connected but actually isnt! Need to turn wifi off and on, and this happens while I m using the phone, not while its on standby!

Rest its awesome, So i will say wait for next update! I stopped mobile data for exams so don’t know how that works!

  • Berg

Have you tried doing ‘forget network’ and adding your accesspoint again?

I think I’ve had a similar problem in the past..

  • Maulana Yusuf

Can anyone know why z LTE version is still 4.1.2 ?

  • Abhijit Biswas

Not working! I forgot and then re-added my wifi! When I dont use my phone for a while! But now only when screen is off!(but that improved since i turned off stamina mode)

  • Abhijit Biswas

So pls share it on different sites and even get your friends to sign it, even non-Sony phones! We need to get all those signatures so that I can put forth the petition/idea!

Samsung and Even WindowsPhones8.1(just announced at MWC and will roll out to all current WP8 phones) have move apps to sd card, along with chinese phones so SOny will have to give us this option!

  • Naseer
