Specs comparison: Xperia Z2 versus the Samsung Galaxy S5

by XB on 25/02/2014

in Videos, Xperia Z2

Xperia Z2 versus GS5Sony and Samsung went head-to-head at MWC 2014 yesterday, with both companies announcing their new flagship handsets. The Sony Xperia Z2 has improved on the Xperia Z1 in a number of ways including a slightly bigger and better display, faster chipset, more RAM, higher battery capacity and stereo speakers. The beautiful OmniBalance design remains, with its aluminium frame and glass panels. However, some will criticise the Xperia Z2 on its size and weight.

The Samsung Galaxy S5 improves on last year’s model by adding water resistance (IP67) and features such as a finger and heart sensor. It also adds a more powerful chipset, a marginally bigger display, higher MP camera sensor and battery capacity. The design remains the same as last year, along with the use of plastic throughout.

The reaction to the Galaxy Samsung S5 has been mixed, probably not a surprise given the high expectations. For once, it looks like the Xperia Z2 has a good chance to take some of the mind share from the Galaxy flagship, especially when you consider the Z2′s overall design package, higher RAM and battery capacity and let’s not forget those stereo speakers.

However, you would still expect Samsung to market the S5 extensively and it will still sell bucket loads. After all, we’re sure some people will find the heart/finger sensor useful.

Anyway, with both handsets carrying a premium price north of €500 in Europe, consumers will have a choice to make when they launch in 4-6 weeks time. You can see the specifications of both flagships compared below to get a sense of how they differ. Are any readers swayed by what the Galaxy S5 has to offer? If not, why not? We’d love to hear your thoughts below.

I thought Z2 has the new 801 not the 800 according to Sony’s presentation

  • Vector Teh

Yes, Z2 is using the new 801. However, S5 is using an updated version of 801.
    More info here:
    http://blog.gsmarena.com/mystery-solved-what-is-snapdragon-801-and-is-it-powering-the-samsung-galaxy-s5/

  • Murad

This time Sony does everything is right , will buy Z2 )

  • Abdul Rahman Khan

plzzz dnt compare with shit plastic things..z2 already kick ass samsung s5 :D…guyz agree this plzz thumb up

  • Brian Byron De Guzman

    even z1 beats s5

  • Felix

You guys should put the useable storage too. Make that x minus 8GB for the S4

  • Abdul Rahman Khan

plzzz dnt compare with shit things …z2 alredy kick ass Korean :D…now JAPAN DANCING GANGNAM STYLE :D

  • Shelta

In my opinion the specs of either XZ2 or S5 is not the most important thing for me. If a phone is 5mm taller or 18g heavier, if it has 0.2 GHz or 2 megapixels more, who really cares? What really matters to me is (1) PREMIUM FEEL (2) PREMIUM DESIGN (3) PREMIUM OS WITH A BEAUTIFUL DESIGN LANGUAGE (4) GOOD BATTERY LIFE (5) PERFORMANCE. And in every topic the XZ2 beats the Galaxy S5. Look at the plastic design. It’s like a desaster! This phone is ugly as hell and even though they optimized TouchWiz it still looks like it’s programmed for kids. We have to see some comparisons when it comes to picture quality and 4K videos. I’m not a hater but I can truly say that Sony wins this time! I’m already counting my money…

  • Doubleyoupee

If the Z2 was 132x69x9mm with 5″ it would be the perfect phone for me.

  • Abdul Ghani
  • Tyrel

What is a difference between water proof and water ressistant?

  • brian
  • Anukul

    I want to eat z2 :D

  • Guest

Hope they have a 32gig version later.

  • Julio Spinoza

None of them are water proof but the Xperia has more capability against water, it means that you can sumerge completely in water and even take video and photo and the SAMEsung don’t. S5 is only proof water against slight inmersiones

  • Micro

waterproof means almost immune to water (can keep the water out of the device for a long period of time) so basically you can sink it, forget about it and the device won’t get damaged.
water resistant means it can keep water out for some shorter time

  • Logan

Of course Samsung will market their phone extensively…. Korean’s only do that to get attention. Just look at all their so-called girl-bands and shows.. they advertise it extensively but all they show are a bunch of skinny legs, fake faces (too much surgery) and ugly shows. Sony on the other hand is about innovation and design in which they have brought to use once again. Even though in terms of design, mobile phones have reach it’s end IMO, but they still manage to pull it off. That’s why Sony is one of the best brands out there.

  • Micro

    well said mate

  • Miron

Which IP rating of these two phones is better?

  • David Lettinga

Sony’s Z2 can go under deeper water for longer periods of time. S5 is 3 feet of water while the Z2 is 5.5 feet

  • David Lettinga

    Xperia Z2 http://www.engineeringtoolbox.com/ip-ingress-protection-d_452.html

So basically the S5 states it is completely dust proof while the Z2 can go in deeper in water for longer

  • Concha

The Xperia Z2′s IP58 if you prefer waterproof. The SGS5′s IP67 is you prefer a dustproof smartphone. ;-)

  • mountain

Its a pity. I visited north korea a few months ago holding a xperia. The local guide was suprised that even sony made mobile phones. All they knew was samsung and apple! Sony really need to reach and promote to everywhere in the world to be number one!

  • Thobbe

    Z2 has ant+. Great!

  • Lol

What were you expecting? It’s North Korea, they censor off all the good stuff :p

(Don’t mean any offence to anyone)

  • Andi Ko

i think both phone are great but ,…sony is the winner here,….i bought a phone for entertaiment ,..looking movie,.hearing music etc,….not for my healthy,…if i want want to check my healthy i go to doctor not to check with my phone,….just my option

  • aragorn

not being biased but when you look at the video, it’s obvious that, both in the hardware build and UI, the Z2 has a very premium and elegant feel while the S5 looks like a cheap, uninspiring smartphone.

  • kaostheory

You forgot fm radio. The one main reason for me not buying samy or apple.

  • Asa

I still have an Xperia T despite having bought it on launch day with just a one year contract. I liked the Z, but deemed it too early to upgrade (4 months lol). The Xperia Z1 seemed to miss something, so I decided to hold out for the next big Xperia. I am sooo glad with my decision! They nailed everything with the Z2, this is a smartphone worthy of the name “upgrade” (especially if you’re still a T owner like me :p)!

Future Z2 owner right here. So eh.. Release date, please!

  • Nikola Marunić

    Close enough!

  • Faisal Armand

    LOL

  • Ghayyath El Masri

So..”My Magazine” copied from HTC One, Home screens customization from Xperias, Fingerprint sensor from iPhone 5s…Samsung needs to stop copying it’s getting ridiculous!

  • MyLive

S5.. that back cover texture.. hmm.. reminds me of an old SE C702 from 6 years back..??

  • https://twitter.com/rgxVOiD naathaanS

    I want one. NAO!

  • DooMLoRD

hope to get the Z2 soon!

  • Rene Pedroso

In the video he states that the S5 is water resistant while the XZ2 is waterproof.

  • Jen

Wow. Fine and all if you don’t like the brand but I don’t feel like there’s any need to bring race into this.

  • shanefalco

hi sony fanboy…how are you? ahahaha…ridicoluos guys!

  • REX

    Awesome comment…

  • jumbo3220

So Xperia Z2 not using a Snapdragon 801 ? because MSM8974 AA and AB are S800 variants. only MSM8974 AC is a Snapdragon 801 variant.

  • Battal Aljadei

you should add Radio feature which’s included with-in the Z2 instead of the silly “sealed battery” which’s not a smartphone feature and never has been !

  • Quark Gluon

Samsung is South Korean and Apple is American, that’s ironic.

  • sisore

Well, can you explain why are you laughing because I really don’t get it?
Is it because you think S5 is ‘better’ than Z2? Or is there something else?

  • wei147

Joke of the year hahaha…….cant stop laughing!

  • Brad Williams

Seriously impressed with the Z2. It just does everything right. Don’t worry about the .2 of a ghz overclocked, the Sameshit needs it. XZ2 doesn’t and wont. The battery in real life terms will be far better and stamina mode will just get even better.

  • PAIN SIX PATH

Z2 destroyed s5 in every aspect
    1_better display
    2_more ram
    3_better camera
    4_better chipset(snapdaragon 801 vs 800)
    5_better battery
    6-better design
    7_better build quality(body and inside)
    8_better sound
And in return Samsung copied Sony for dust and water resistant, and nothing,,people are so frustrated and curse Samsung for this stupidphone, this time they showed their phones in a day and Samsung hadn’t time to copy others tech,,Samsung had no invitation it was just marketing and paid web sites like phonearena that made it big,,and Samsung become big because other manufacturers like Sony,Nokia,HTC became weak due to wrong decision of their CEOs.

  • Fëanáro Nénmacil

It’s a bit racist yeah. Still, Korea announced a long while ago that they would enter global market with their focus on media and creating trends. Basically K-Pop music, K-Fashion, Korean drama series, Korean food are not something extraordinary, but they market these stuff very well. Samsung is another example of what they’re doing. It’s not totally related, but the pattern is the same.

You know some countries really have issues with Koreans copying their stuff. A lot of famous Japanese manga have been copied and then they claimed these stuff originated from Korea. Martial art and other cultural stuff was also having the same problem. Samsung is doing the same thing, taking other people’s ideas. But still they are not related, but it’s awkward to see the similar pattern.

  • Tangent Lin

Same experience we have.. I’m a TX user :-).. But I think the main different is we have to handle Z2 with care.. not like our T or TX..

  • drakonest

alright, I love this z2 version, but I prefer one with smaller size, more like the compact version, so SONy please release the compact version and I will buy it!

  • PAIN SIX PATH

There is z1 compact for you,,go and buy it,

  • thinking. time

@ admin. In section Samsung You write a “marginally bigger display, higher MP camera sensor and battery capacity” but in table xperia have bigger screen. 5.2xz2 and 5.1 g5 so how xperia have smaller screen? Secondly. I did know That 3200 is samller than 2800mah

Correction please, thinking would be useful. Next time

  • johnylim

    Long Live PLASTIC. lol

  • johnylim

    True !
And at spec wise. Android need more RAM, not processor speed for real life usage performance

  • Ethan ‘blaze’ Parker

He was comparing S5 to S4.

S5 has “marginally bigger display, higher MP camera sensor and battery capacity” compared to S4, not Z2.

  • Clamser

The old Sammy is tired, hurt us From to bleed for those of earlier edition of Galaxy, So they sent us the S5 as a solution to heal our wounds with a sensor and heart rate monitor, fingerprint sensor for better sorting of patients a child mode for mental retarded, a power saving mode (black white display for those who suffer from color blindness) a mobile payment solution to avoid move to go pay for care.

  • nidou bossy

    couldn’t agree more than that!

  • Nikola Marunić

This was actually tweeted by a President of HTC America so I really can’t take any credit. But I surely see where Samsung got it’s inspiration!

  • nidou bossy

7 months from now and there will be another beast… the second flagship of 2014 might be code named Xperia Z3.. i wonder what would they’ll pack it up with! lol

  • nidou bossy

please, don’t make it more intense discuss when criticizing a company…it has nothing to do with Korean people, the way they live, what they do and how they look..etc

****it’s an out of topic discrimination****

  • spam

I only get random porn subscription offers on this link that cost money, remove this filthy porn spam link!

  • vinay

samsung copied the S5 back cover design from micromax

  • some ideas

Sony xperia z2 stamina mode, radio, magnetic charging port is not mentioned in spec sheet… Samsung copied 4 colors, fingerprint from iphone, interface from htc and symbian belle, waterresistance and powersaving from sony etc (joking a little) sony only copied knock on display from lg…. But tell me what is better magnetic charging or open usb port / flapclosed usb proof with only water resistance?? And whyo why did samsung make thicker bezels??? While sony customers scream for smaller bezels? Is that the way to do competition? Samsung is just trying to copy features from others to defend their position it is not offensive leading innovation anymore (was it)

  • vinay

samsung copied the S5 back cover design from micromax….:-D :-D

  • Alex

Just have to add something… Nokia and Sony had the knock on feature before LG, Lumina phones and the Tablet Z for example! so soSonyny is just implementing their own feature from their tablet in their phones!

  • JARVAN IV

i love S5 GOLD VERSION omg omg omg its so cooooooool with the band aid inspired design!!!!…….. LOL NO

  • Rob

I don’t think Z2 has a better chipset than the S5. It’s very confusing tho.

According to whitepaper from Sony and Wikipedia, the Z2 has 8974-AB which is part of the Snapdragon 800 platform.

But according to Qualcomm they have the 801:
    http://www.qualcomm.com/snapdragon/smartphones/sony-xperia-z2

The S5 is listed as having 8974-AC, which falls under Snapdragon 801.

    Wiki:
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Snapdragon_%28system_on_chip%29#Snapdragon_801

  • more thoughts

Didnt know that, nice one, in the end many useful features endup main stream, sony could improve the z2 camera by keeping the sensor the same size but lower amount of pixel to 12 megapixel that still allows 4k video and makes pictures and video way better for indoor/lowlight and they really should do something about the ugly noise in images and add ois…

  • klo

cheap, uninspiring and hideous, lol jk im so mean

  • Timbo1

I see really no need for 3GB of RAM on Sony’s phone especially on Kit Kat. Their UI is really light compared to the resource whore Touchwiz.

  • Timbo1

Its a damn shame that Touchwiz uses up almost 8GB of storage on the the S5.

  • Jx

Z2 please come to me NOW!!!!!

  • Vignesh Raja

    hope you sh*t S5…..

  • Anukul

no, the same plain digested shit just like you :D

  • Danny

While I, of course, love the Z2 more, but with the Distribution channels Samsung have, they would outsell any phone except the iPhones. Sony needs to push Xperia to all major carriers, in US, not just T-Mobile, but Verizon, Sprint, AT&T and other prepaid carriers as well. This coming from a T-Mobile USA customer.
As long as Sony only limiting it’s own success by limiting where Xperia are solds.
BRING IT TO THE MASSES, SONY!

  • Rob

Sony isn’t limiting anything. They can’t force the other carriers to sell their products.

It’s the customers that need to put demands on operators to sell the phones, otherwise they don’t have any reason to range it from Sony.

  • josesl16

You managed to get into North Korea? O.o

  • Benjamin Rodriguez

Nope, that was tweeted by Joanna Stern, a writer for the Wall Street Journal, during the Samsung announcement.

  • Nikola Marunić

I honestly don’t know. On the page where I found the pic it said that President of HTC America had posted it. Maybe he got it from her. Anyway it is hilarious!

  • Marcellus

Id like to know when its coming to verizon???

  • Ajay

SONY make very bad phone. Because sale after service is not good.

  • David Martin

I agree with you. I went through an article http://www.cheapmonthlymobile.co.uk/blog/index.php/samsung-galaxy-s5-vs-sony-xperia-z2-quick-comparison/ that also given me a good comparison between both devices i.e. S5 and Z2. I think this post contain best possible information.

  • Divya Bharathi

Very interesting thing I just come across at MyDeals247.com – I could choose any number of items (from the list) at very heavy discount rates (up to 75% off online) – more we buy more discount – I never seen this before.
