Android KitKat coming to Xperia Z1, Z Ultra and Z1 Compact in April 2014 says French carrier

android_4.4._kitkatEarlier this month, Polish carrier PLAY said that the Xperia Z would receive the Android 4.4.2 KitKat firmware update by early March 2014. That always seemed optimistic, but a new software carrier schedule from French operator SFR has given its own estimation of the KitKat release.

SFR says that the Android 4.4.2 KitKat update will hit the Xperia Z1, Xperia Z Ultra and Xperia Z1 Compact from April 2014. This timeline is more plausible to us, as we always expected the KitKat update to appear after the new flagship (Xperia Z2) had launched. We would also expect to see the Xperia Z1 updated before the Xperia Z. There is still no official word from Sony on definitive timings for the KitKat release but we’ll keep you posted.

I thought it’d be end of February, mid-March but that works for me as well… hope the update will bring 4k as Z1 supports the hardware.

  • Sasa

SFR also says that the Android 4.3 Jelly Bean update will hit the Xperia SP and Xperia T from March 2014. 4.3 update is already available :D

  • uidesigner_sony

As it happens every time: “+1-1,5 month”, but let’s hope)

I just hope Z1 doesn’t get overshadowed and discriminated because of Xperia Z2. Z1 deserves all software features of Z2 since it is a capable device.

Sony is the last one to give kitkat too his phones sadly. LG,HTC and Samsung are releasing kitkat right now to their top models phones

  • Fëanáro Nénmacil

I haven’t followed LG and HTC, but for Samsung a lot of S4 owners were regretting the Kitkat :( (I’m in a FB group for it to check what they’re up to)

well, its not much different with sony too. look at the T/ V forums – 4.3 is finally upon us, and its full of bugs. they released another update today, so by the time it will hit my phone it will be mid march. sony has like 2 people supporting 2 dozen phones per year. its the same case every single time – 1-2 months delay by sony. it’s a bit disappointing if you buy a flagship and you get your updates a good 2 months after rivals phones get the same update. sony better do something about their software.

  • jose

let’s be realistic, is just a month later… it’s a progress but still they need to improve the schedule next time to bring earlier updates

  • Sand

Release Z2 with kit kat out of the box in March, then in the end of april release kit kat for z1, and others devices.. Sony never changes.. what a shame.. u.u

  • Sand

Z, ZL users should seen it early august :P

  • huh

I’m afraid it will… I have a bad feeling that the Xperia Z1 will become they “new” Xperia S with terribly slow updates

  • RaZieLRaH

A month later is late :(. I understood that they wanted to show off Z2 before releasing kitkat to other phones but still they should have been ready with them and release them starting from march. anyhow even later is better than never

  • XperiaBlog

Precisely. The above timeline is for this carrier only, there is every chance that it could arrive earlier!

  • Yeah

    I do wonder about Z and ZR…

  • Vadim Katznelson

Considering that the Xperia S (dinosaur phone) started getting neglected mostly after the Xperia Z launch (which was 2 gen newer), and the fact that in the last year they’ve made changes and started offering faster and better support to the new Z series phones, I highly doubt it. Even the Xperia Z is massively supported to this date and gets constant updates, so MAYBE the Xperia Z will get somewhat slower and rarer updates at the very earliest by the end of 2014. The Z1 will be fully supported, and I believe it will get KitKat not much after the launch of the Z2.

Stop comparing current gen phones support with what happened to an ANCIENT AND OBSOLETE phone, the Xperia S. It’s dumb. Xperia S is an ooold obsolete phone. If you have it, ok, if it still works, check your mail and make phone calls with it, it’s a decent quality phone for … 2011. But don’t expect support. Even the T should stop getting support. They need to concentrate at 3 generations at a time, that’s more than reasonable. That’s the Z, Z1, and Z2. U got a Xperia S or T? At least get the Z, it’s cheap now. Or a mid range Sony from the last year.

  • huh

Lol, you are overreacting. I just made an example with the Xperia S, it’s history I know, but what do you compare things with if not history?

  • Vadim Katznelson

You’re forgetting one thing. LG, htc, samsung are just doing a light kitkat update, without too many new features. For the Z1 at least, the kitkat update will come with a few completely new and complex features like 4k and 120fps (slow mo) recording, glove mode, active backlight, tap to wake, etc etc (i’m sure i’m forgetting some important features right now). So there’s a LOT more to test and polish besides a visual kitkatt update.

  • Vitali

And what about Xperia Tablet Z?

  • Vadim Katznelson

With history. But you need to use logic. Comparing z1 support with s is nonsense considering the z1 isn t even yet last gen, and the current last gen, the z, gets ton of support. So use logic and common sense with that history.

  • Apoorv Deshmukh

Don’t say that. I had Xperia S before Z1. Don’t want to face the same nightmare again :-P

  • Gitarooman

carrier verison, unbranded one is probably march.

  • kunal

    Bloody late …
Samsung has already released it for s4 & note 3
    Shane on u guys

  • денис дардымов

WTF, Sony ? April ? Maybe august ?!

  • xperiaz6603swe

    no sooner wtf:/

  • Makiz

Well, Doomlord has something to say……

  • Timbo1

yea carrier branded devices often get updates later than non branded devices.

  • Timbo1

this is for the carrier! Non branded phones should get it sooner!

  • Timbo1

finally someone with some sense! carriers typically get it later than non branded phones.

  • Timbo1

    Tomorrow!!

    sarcasm.

  • Abdul Ghani
  • https://twitter.com/rgxVOiD naathaanS

Samsung is also late. I got 4.4.2 on my Nexus launch of Kitkat. Beat that!

  • https://twitter.com/rgxVOiD naathaanS

    Worst sarcasm ever. 1/10

  • Makiz

    LOL………

  • Timbo1

you know someone got excited :p

  • https://twitter.com/rgxVOiD naathaanS
  • Timbo1

    haha

  • Stephen

my carrier in ireland told me to expect kitkat mid march, so im expecting it around the 20th march

Xperia S is kind of the exception here if you are really good with the history. The XS is the last of Sony Ericsson’s line of products. One of the problems with the old SE products is that they tend to use older (some would say already obsolete) hardware platforms. Since then, Sony has been pretty good in using the latest Qualcomm stuff for their flagships. There is no more support from Qualcomm for the CPU used in the XS, so there is not much that Sony can do.

The Z’s pretty much use the latest lines from Qualcomm so the path to their obsolescence will be longer than the XS. The XS was pretty much obsolete back when it was “new”.

  • karamelakimo

    hahahaha u afraid about Z1
    what’s about Z owners??
I think Z1 have almost the same processor not a big difference and the same camera i think may be 4k video come with Update android 4.4 for Z1
I’m still happy with my Z and will stick with it althoug Z2 deserve replacing ;)

  • Kater

    What about ZR!!!!

  • Vadim Katznelson

Isn’t the xperia s branded Sony (mobile), not Sony Ericsson? Either way, the mere fact they just released a new firmware for the t/v (3 generations old flagship) renders what “HUH” said about support for the z1 bs. Probably a frustrated S owner. Get over it and get a new phone, mate.

  • Ethan ‘blaze’ Parker

Kiddin me? Xperia Z gets updates at the same time as Z1. Xperia S is just 2nd gen, its all about the generations of the devices.

  • Fëanáro Nénmacil

If I recall correctly, it was right in during the transformation from SE to Sony. But the phone has been planned since the SE and that’s why the SE logo is on it.

  • Fëanáro Nénmacil

Because they use different CPU. Why would companies stop supporting their flagship right away? They don’t want to, but they are forced to.
The drivers for Xperia S wasn’t provided with, so Sony couldn’t do anything.

Xperia S, along with other phones during that time with the same chipset (and not just from SONY) could no longer be updated while the Z is using another one which is likely to be continued.

So no he’s no really overreacting. You can compare today phones with the phones from the past, but you should know the reason why such thing happens to those phones as well. There are reasons for it.

  • Fëanáro Nénmacil

The point is that I don’t want them to rush the updates too much.
Everyone wants a new update yes, but a good one.

Maybe those buggy things on T/V could also be a result from rushy work as well who knows.

  • adecvat

    4k for compact, please!

  • foreverlate

“result from rushy work as well who knows.”
that’s the point. I am pointing out that others ship buggy code too , however, they are faster nevertheless in even shipping the fixes. that makes sony slow overall. I do support sony’s hardware – but software is one department where sony has to buck up. okay i like their simplistic elegant design, but that’s settled right ? and between this version and the new updates in 4.4.2 they haven’t done nearly anything like samsung. samsung has a plethora of services and apps. their phones cost the same as sony’s . so aren’t they working hard enough ? my point is that its reasonable to demand from a company. no be fans and accept whatever they shove down our throats

  • Giridhar

I bought a Sony Xperia Ultra last month and am unhappy that the power switch failed so quickly and the phone has now gone to the service center for repair. Imagining this happening to Sony branded product. While I am waiting patiently (I am without a phone and the company neither contacted me nor given me any date) for the phone to be returned, I feel that it is a design problem. I caution all potential buyers to check this out before spending your hard earned money on this product

  • sony fan

Maybe V/T/SP will get kitkat in august..:p

  • Sumo

Dude, the S and XZ are two different ‘machines’ with different horse powers… So the S being left behind is inevitable. But the Z? It’s just behind Z1 and it is capable of handling the KitKat. Saying that, anything beyond KitKat, then yeah Z will be left behind… it will happen sooner or later, but not as fast as the S :p

Hi! What’s the problem with Finnish version of Z1? I haven’t received any updates since firmware 14.2.A.1.136, is this normal? I’m checkin updates for my phone with Sony PC Companion.. Although phone is working great, no bugs or lags or anything! But I’m just thinking if my update checker doesn’t work?

    I think not this year

You didn’t see they stated S4 and Note3 to get Kitkat in March? If they say that, and those devices got it a month earlier then perhaps the same will be true for the Sony devices.

  • Johan Eriksson

There is no update for you yet. 136 is the newest currently.
