Sony MDR-NC31EM Digital Noise Cancelling Headset_4The Sony MDR-NC31EM Digital Noise Cancelling Headset is now in stock in the UK, with retailer Handtec selling both the black and white versions for £29.99 plus postage. The Sony MDR-NC31EM headset will be bundled with the Xperia Z2, combining with the Z2’s digital noise-cancelling (DNC) technology to reduce up to 98% of all ambient sounds.

As the DNC technology is built into the Xperia Z2, it negates the need for bulky headphones. The MDR-NC31EM headset includes a mic on each ear that tracks the noise around you. These sounds are sent to the Xperia Z2’s DNC circuit, which inverts the sound wave before sending it back to your ears with the reduced noise.

The Sony MDR-NC31EM Digital Noise Cancelling Headset can also be used for hands-free calling (only possible with devices with a 3.5 mm 5-pole audio contact). The headset has a frequency response of 20Hz – 20,000Hz, weighs just 21 grams and has a one metre length cable. It also should be comfortable for most ears and comes with three sizes of earbuds. The headset’s noise cancelling capabilities can also be used with the Xperia Z2 Tablet.

  • So… i can’t use with the Xperia S, is that right?

  • cs098

You can use it, you just won’t have noise cancellation.

  • Mohammed Khired

    BS

  • klkl

So you gotta have a device that is capable of running the sound canceling stuff? What kinda crap is that… Talk about limiting their audience

  • ziziziziziz

why are you all so mad about that? they need to advertise their newest flagship you know..

  • Gregg Lowden

Typical Sony – offer something affordable that requires something extremely costly and will not be available in your market anytime soon. Oh, by the way it works with you’re already costly ZL device just no noise cancellation. Not about to ditch a barely year old phone because Sony offers something up out-dating it.

  • Mac

5pole audio jack.. man there goes the standard again and leave all the rest behind. Jeez my z1 compact is so soo old now..
    -_-

  • Janne303

Why sell it now when you cant use it in a month?

  • osamaH Al-Amri

If this one is the same as the one that came with my Duo 11, then I can say it’s superb!

  • Colby Leong

They aren’t limiting their audience they’re showing that you can put noise canceling inside a cellphone, so you won’t need to carry extra big headphones around, but instead just earbuds.

  • kaostheory

I see this becoming industry standard. Why would you want another battery to charge and have to wear it around your neck with the rest of the nc electronics?

  • SSyar

Well, there is always someone asking for Xperia S :p.,.,.

  • Quark Gluon

This 5-pole 3.5mm jack will be the standard for flagship phones sooner or later anyway. Then it might as well be adopted by mid-rangers. It’s just a matter of time. Future Walkman devices may benefit from it too.

  • Mac

Well yea u right about that, but still I want my Z1c to feel new at least 6 months or so.
Btw, while talking about mid rangers. This is one of the reasons (even if it’s small) why the z1 and z1c becomes midragers just like that, because of the lack of the newest standards.
yea I know it’s the way it is and the tech is moving so fast these days but man now I really don’t hope there will be a z2 compact because when it comes the z3 will be out a week later and hey it is going to have a 6 pole Audio jack with (ultra clear voice and noise cancellation++ with 10.3 surround) n wireless high-speed charging so we can burn our recently bought docks.
Nah I ain’t hatin, but I wish for a z3 compact along with the z3 at launch so we who don’t want a 5.2 Inch phablet but still want all the latest can get it right away.

Finally, it has been 6 years since Sony Ericsson introduced the HPM-88 Noise Cancelling headset for mobile phones. It is not compatible with todays phones, but is still in my drawer.

Each day I commute to work I use a Sony NWZ-S755 MP3-player with similar noise cancelling headphones, it saves my hearing as I don’t have to turn the volume up to hear the music in noisy environment..

  • STFU

Don’t understand at all why some people can whine about everything! New function/technologies keeps coming everyday. Want to enjoy it? Just buy a new phone! That’s it! Just stop whining, bitches!

  • Frode P. Bergsager

If you check out the more than 3 year old old MDR-NC033 used on Sony MP3 players with active noise cancellation the 5 pole jack is identical.
Not sure if the NX31EM has an additional third microphone, or if it use the microphones in the earbuds for handsfree mode. They may even be 100% compatible with my NWZ-S755 MP3 player.

  • andrew boon

    Technology is just growing !

  • S

When Xperia S will receive Kit Kat???? just kiding :P

  • nidou bossy

    so beautiful and unique design!

  • ananananan

can i use it with my xperia z1

  • Xperia

i have question will this work with Bluetooth devices such as the SBH52 connected to the Z2 and the headphones into the SBH52 or does the headphones have to directly connect into the the Z2?

  • Xperia

you can but the noise cancellation wont work only use them as standard headphones

  • i am not going to upgrade my Z1 to Z2 just for the DNC ! maybe i will wait till Z3 or Z4 comes

  • Creo que cometí un error, compre estos audífonos (MDR-NC31EM) pero mi tablet es Xperia Tablet Z L1/B y no siento la anulación de ruido externo, tampoco tengo en pantalla la opción de Noise Cancelling. Me ensarte.

  • eoedaral

  • Gary B.

I just wanna ask.. Is there an android app that offers active noise cancellation?

  • cs098

Since it’s hardware, I doubt it.

Anyone know, How to use mdr nc31em headphone for receiving calls (handsfree) in xperia z2?

  • Raviteja

Is it compatible for Xperia Z?

  • Raviteja

Is this headset is compatible for Xperia Z?

  • Jeofrey

I tried this. It does not cancel noise unless plugged in directly to the phone as the noise cancelling circuitry is within the phone itself. I bought the MDR-NC 31EM and the Xperia Z3 Dual. I also have the SBH-52. So if you want the noise cancelling to work just plug the earphones directly to you Z2 /Z3 or their respective tablet versions. There are more options under the sound settings for further customization.

  • Phill Jones

The problem I have is that the headphones are not compatible with my macbook air. I’m not sure whether I should blame sony or apple for that but it’s disappointing, especially because when I connect them to my Z2, music sounds so good.

  • Vadim Cotorobai

    because you need special input:

look on the website: Note: call handling is only possible when the MDR-NC31EM is connected to a device with a 3.5 mm 5-pole audio contact. Check your device specifications for details.

This means for audio listening too. Just buy a adapter from 5pole to 3 pole like this in the image.
