Sony confirms Android KitKat rolling for Xperia Z1, Xperia Z Ultra and Xperia Z1 Compact

Android KitKat XperiaSony Mobile has this morning confirmed that the Android 4.4.2 KitKat firmware update is now rolling for the Xperia Z1, Xperia Z Ultra and Xperia Z1 Compact. The company also confirmed that KitKat will hit the Xperia Z, Xperia ZL, Xperia Tablet Z and Xperia ZR from the middle of Q2 2014 i.e. look for it in May.

Other handsets confirmed to get Android KitKat include the 2014 Sony Xperia handsets recently announced such as the Xperia T2 Ultra, Xperia E1 and Xperia M2. However, Sony has not confirmed any timings for these handsets.

So what can you expect with the KitKat update? Well apart from the standard Android 4.4.2 features, especially on the performance side, Sony has added the following:

  • A tweaked Status Bar and Quick Settings – More intuitive and customisable.
  • The same launch animation and live wallpaper as the Sony PlayStation 4 adapted across the lock and home screens.
  • Sony’s native app portfolio will be updated to the latest versions. This includes Messaging, MyXperia, Smart Connect, Small apps, TrackID, TrackID TV, Sony Select and Smart Social Camera.
  • Updated Media apps including WALKMAN, Album and Movies. Better Sony Entertainment Network & PlayMemories integration with a more intuitive UI and faster download speeds.

Judging by the changelog above, it appears to confirm our recent speculation that a number of new features seen in the Xperia Z2 will NOT be heading to the KitKat builds of the Xperia Z1 and Xperia Z1 Compact. This includes 4K video, Timeshift video, Tap to wake, Smart call handling, Smart backlight control and Glove mode (already included in the Xperia Z1 Compact).

    No, really? Yes, I know mid-Q2 is May and this is when they will *announce* the release. It takes weeks if not months for some regions/devices to *actually receive* the OTA update.

    Uhm.. have noone noticed that glove mode is already there on Z1c in 4.3? And that it requires a different digitizer making it impossible to implement on phones that does not have it hardware wise.

    That features are exclusive to Sony’s 2014 devices, so don’t expect them to be included in newer firmwares for older devices. But maybe the developers on the community has something to say about it.

    Well Sony never said something about those features to be implemented. It was just XZ2 feature from the beginning, reviewed and hyped by the media so you can think like that. So just be grateful rather than criticizing the feature that was not meant to be!

    Damn, now I am also waiting for KitKat for V, because 4.3 is completely unusable…so my only hope was that 4.4 will make it usable again. This is how Sony creates those fans who cry for updates =)

    P.S. Actually, in the end I will probably flash the old 4.1.2, and that’s it… The best firmware for V, from those days when Sony had better developers and better designers =) R.I.P.

    Plus, the retention rates doesn’t mean anything. because some people just like to showoff rather than using the real deal, so they do whatever they can to stay at the top of food chain (e.g. switching to Note 3 just because it is the most wanted in the community, but then don’t use it to the fullest)

    If you think that Sony is to late with Kitkat, next time just buy a Nexus because if you’re complaining about it, you probably know that Nexus phones are always the first to get a new Android version.

    And will it be nice to get some Z2 features on the Z1? Yes, totally… But if Sony decide to not implement the new features on the Z1, we can’t complain, we bought the Z1 knowing that it won’t record 4k or Slowmotion videos…

    We already know Z1 and Z1 compact share the same digitizer than Z2 devices, and tap to wake and glove thing are not enabled on Z1 devices by software only. And smart call handling is a software only feature.

    Guys, have you all not learned yet by now? Did the Z get timeshift burst of the Xperia Z1 in official updates? No, correct? How likely will they bring Z2 exclusive softwares to Z1? Not likely. I as a user who migrated from Xperia Z to Xperia Z, knows that each key feature a flagship has, predecessors will not get it officially. Just hope doomlord might port Z2 features for the Z1. There’s an Xperia Z rom that has smart call handling. Just a matter of time guys.

    I saw you added “realistically” word after my comment, But why waiting so much when you can update the same release day using flashtool to any firmware from any region?, also, usually Sony updates 90% of all regions within 2-3 weeks time space. Carrier customized firmwares are another story and not Sony’s fault.

    I wouldn’t hold my breath to see 4.4 on anything older than the Z. If they would have 4.4 in schedule for V, SP, TX, etc… they would have already announced it like they did with 4.3 update. They never announce they won’t update a device.

    I can’t be bothered with cables, flashtool and potential memory wipe in the process. I reckon OTA updates should be done pretty much immediately or with very little delay. To put things in perspective, I also have an iPhone and it notified me about the iOS 7.1 update before I even read the news about it in the internet (and I’m not a slouch when it comes to mobile industry news)! Sure, one could argue that iOS is not a good comparison because it’s not as fragmented as Android and all that, yet I’d expect a new OTA update to hit my handset no later than few days, maybe a week after official release. Sony is constantly failing to do that.

    As for “carrier customized firmwares”… right, here’s the real-life story: I have an *unbranded* Xperia Z, bought sim-free from Sony directly, in fact pre-ordered as soon as it’s been launched a year ago. The official 4.2->4.3 update has been announced on 23/12, just in time for Christmas, yay! Trouble is, my handset got the OTA update… exactly 5 weeks later. Yes, 5 weeks! In the meantime I’ve seen reports of carrier-customised XZ handsets getting an update before mine.

    Real-life example number 2: back in 2012 I’ve had an Xperia S, also unbraded, sim-free and all that. What was the excitement when Sony finally announced already long-awaited (aka delayed) ICS upgrade from 2.3 to 4.0! Don’t remember the dates exactly now, yet I definitely remember that between announcement and actual OTA update in my particular handset I’ve been waiting for OVER 2 MONTHS! Yes, really.

    Do you see the point of me saying “realistically June, July maybe” now?

    Z1 can enable pen mode and no glove mode.
    Z1 Compact has glove mode but can’t enable pen mode.

    I have the z1 compact and no matter what mod I do pen mode won’t work.

    For Z owners, when they mean Q2, they mean last day of Q2 plus a month of delay for whatever reason and another month until the update arrives on your carrier. So basically 4.4 wI’ll arrive at the end of August for most.

    I know its not a T V or SP post. But if Xperia E1, M2 receives Kitkat how and why on earth T V and SP needs investigation. Cmmon Sony please dont leave us with this sluggish buggy 4.3. I am a T user and believe me in 4.3 even Flappy bird lags sometimes.

    What is the problem with 4.3? I’m happy with my 4.3 stock rooted ZR. Most of Z2 apps has been installed in it from XDA. 4.4 is a bonus for me. :)

    I have this strange feeling, that Xperia Z lineup will receive every incremental Android version within its 18 months of software policy, whereas the mid range and low end will receive the update in two steps, like how the 4.1.2 of SP upgraded directly to 4.3. Seems legit to me considering the price we pay.

    related to T2 and E2, well, they are the newer device which was announced after Google set baseline that every new devices must use KitKat. So their next Firmware will be Android 4.6 i guess :)

    I don’t mind what Z2 has. One of main goals of companies is to satisfy the customers and support their products after selling for a while.
    I like my Z1 but I dislike Sony’s support. They’re very experienced to cheat people by ads.
    I can’t understand why they didn’t put tap-to-wake, camera improvements (Z2 proves that they can improve the quality of photos), pen mode (disabled in software) …
    The answer is, they want to leave something for their next flagship…
    I will use my Z1, but I promise to Sony, I will not their customer anymore.
    LG, HTC, Samsung, Nokia, even Huawei… everyone but Sony.

    Haha, how in the world can a person be so wrong in a single post?. The Xperia Z got everything from the Z1 when the 4.3 update arrived. Well everything software wise, wich doesn’t include 20MP camera, dedicated camera button and uncovered headphones connector X’D

    Maybe that was because both were 2013 flagships, but probably they will not backport 2014 features to 2013 devices, that would cannibalize Z2 sales given the small technical differences between Z1 and Z2

    They always give aprox. dates to update through PC Companion, SUS, etc, not OTA. If you only learned how to update through OTA, then yes you will update realistically from June or later, but that is not our problem.

    Okay then it’s my bad on that part. I haven’t touched the Z for a long time. The last time I did, I updated for my friend to 4.3, didn’t notice the time shift burst. I’m sure we can agree that there are a few features they won’t port to the predecessors. Unless, they feel the predecessor can handle the features? Even if they do, will take sometime. However, I know that answering machine is in the Z1 update. That being said, XPERIA Z2 FTW!

    Got it 2 days after the release. I’m pretty happy with it but sometimes it stutters. Also once you change the lockscreen wallpaper from the live one I don’t think you can set it back, can you?

    Hey all. I have updated my z1 to kitkat. I can’t tell you how much poor performance I was experiencing with my phone, I loved it with Jelly Bean. Now I feel like I want to flush it down. I see some different icons flashing on the notification bar even if there are no notifications. Touch is some times not responding, back button is not working at times. RAM usage increased substantially compared to Jelly Bean. Phone became soo slow that I need to uninstall some apps. It used to be a race horse, now it became horse shit. SONY, please fix the bugs and come with an update ASAP.

    If you have a app that is not optimized for kitkat then it will affect the performance as well as drain your battery. I suggest that you factory reset it once and all your problems will be fixed!
