Would you buy the OnePlus One over the Xperia Z2?

OnePlus One_13A new entrant looking to shake-up an already saturated Android market announced its new smartphone today – the OnePlus One. We reported on the phone recently when the company teased some if its key specifications versus the Xperia Z2, but today saw its formal launch so we now know its full specs, design and pricing.

The key thing that the OnePlus One has going for it versus current Android flagships from Sony, HTC and Samsung is its price. The actual hardware is pretty much on par with the best Android handsets on the market, but it will cost less than half these handsets on launch.

It is quite a tall handset with a length of 152.9mm versus 146.8mm for the Xperia Z2, but the OnePlus One does house a 5.5-inch display versus the 5.2-inch display in the Xperia Z2. It also has a similar weight of 162g (Xperia Z2: 163g) and sealed battery capacity of 3100mAh (Xperia Z2: 3200mAh).

The phone runs CyanogenMod 11S (based on Android 4.4) and CyanogenMod has promised two years of software support. The phone is due to launch next month through a vague invite system, no doubt to handle the demand there is likely to be for such a phone at this price point.

The question we have for you today is would you happily buy the OnePlus One over the Xperia Z2? Does the price point make it a no-brainer, or are you willing to pay a premium for the Xperia Z2′s design and glass/aluminium construction? We’d love to hear your thoughts below.

OnePlus One pricing

  • Mirrorpurple

    YES

  • Dakota

As it stands right now? I think I actually would. It’s soooo so much cheaper, with specs relatively the same, if not better. It’s a no brainer, really. Plus I’m sure it’ll get better software support than the Z2 would, with Sony’s spotty track record. I’ll wait until Sony releases their next flagship though befoer buying a new phone; I was never planning on gett the Z2 anways, minimal innovation over the Z1 & Z.

  • Prasanth Namboothiri

Yes. but I will miss Timescape UI

  • Denislav Popov

It may cost much less than the z2 but i’d choose xperia every time i had to go for a new phone. Even the fact that CM now have their own phone wouldn’t make me switch the brand.

  • kirakira

if i’m short on budget, a BIG YES. if i have lots to spare i wouldn’t mind remaining loyal.

  • Vlad

totally, because of this, I will not buy Note 3 this month and wait

  • http://twitter.com/norti norti

It may look fabulous but I’ll still choose the better quality and a bit smaller size. I mostly had only Sony (Ericsson) phones over a decade, I wouldn’t choose a newcomer just for the specs being over the top.

  • Ethan ‘blaze’ Parker

Nope. Not at all. Z2 is overall the best device there is. OPO is the best VFM device.

  • Shelta

Too big for me. I’m waiting for Xperia Z2 compact.

  • Chetak Parate

    Yes

  • Yousuf Chishty

    NEVER……..!
    Z2 EVER.,….!

But still waiting for Z2 in India.

Anyone knows release date of it in India……?

  • Silas Arentsen

    Yes even if it’s “big”
Used 2 sony’s now (1 SE). Would like to try something new and cheaper than Z2/Z1

  • Prateek Bhanushali

First of all, this company is a pure lair…. I havnt justified even a single term which it claimed before…… A sheer Lair Company, cant rely on it !!!

  • Thimmaiah

    Always SONY…
No one plus one or no one minus one…
But Sony beat the iron when its hot. There is good demand for Z2 in India, Release quickly

  • JB

I would buy 3 1+1′s for 1 Z2, and there is no doubt in my mind the oneplus is my favorite.

  • Micro

    no sd-card slot
    no water resistance
    no aptX (BT 4.1? ….really?)
    no camera button
    castrated LTE
no magnetic connector (sorry, I’m addicted to this tiny detail)
stereo speakers on one side of the phone.. b/p..
    plastic..

not to mention no Walkman, PS, and the UI, even if those don’t really come with the hardware.

    No way.
TBH I wouldn’t swap this for my Z1. Price is not everything. If I ever wanted some plastic and cheap, dirt collecting design, over-advertised phone, I’d choose sammy instead. Any sammy. Really.

  • Zdenda Delfínů

yes – Find 7 or OnePlus On or Mi3

  • hansip

Well if i am short on budget then definitely yes. But if i have spare money, no way i’m going to let go from Sony. Never ashamed with my favorite brand that is Sony :) Plus, pure Android is not my cup of tea..

  • Vignesh Raja

Looks great but Oneplus One is not coming to India.

  • spatch

It’d be nice if Sony would actually let me buy the Z2. The OnePlus One might have a weird invite system, but it’ll be easier to get than trying to buy a Z2 from Sony here in Australia.

  • Thomas Billiet

the only two reasons i see for choosing the oneplus one is: it is much cheaper, and two it has cm11 (wich means you’ll get alot of costum roms for the device fast.)

  • Cronugs

Specs are pretty similar, but the Z2 has a microSD for expandable memory. No microSD kills the OPO for me. OPO comes with better software, but I can install cyanogen on the Z2 anyway.

The OPO looks like a great phone, but it’s a first generation phone from a brand new startup. It’s bound to have some teething issues. It’s taken sony 3 generations to get the Z series right, and they have made many phones before the Z series. In a couple of years if OnePlus are still producing top of the line flagship phones at this price. Then, I will be interested.

  • mahdi

sony’s dispaly is kind of crab ! it sucks ! and i hate the support of this company . i never buy any cell phone from sony and i discourage others to buy a garbage like sony’s phones .

  • jak

Having had two Xperias in a row I am now tempted by any company which might do a better job on software updates.

  • Roy

First bottom facing stereo speakers? Have they hot heard of the Z2?

  • psyche

this is an xperia blog. stay on topic.

  • Roy

This is relevant to Xperia supporters.

  • https://twitter.com/rgxVOiD naathaanS

Yes, why not? Its only $299, i can get it and still get the Z2. No big deal for me and I know some friends who lives in China, i might ask him to get it this summer.

  • Govind

What about service? Quality? I’ve used sony since k750i. I can’t change that. ONLY SONY.

  • DestroyTP

Xperia z2 is better Android phone in the world but i feel that the Xperia Z3 will be amazing !!! ^^

  • DestroyTP

    Me too !!! SONY FOREVER !!! ^^

  • m sacha

i just want a good phone at a good price, if its sony then great, if not, then also great

  • LNC SWEDEN

    Never :-)

  • qd

    Z2 Compact > one + > Z2

  • Anukul

Uses a 13mp sony sensor and produces better images than probably even z2 , what an irony! good trolling by oneplus to sony. keep it up

  • zeoxzy

Don’t judge a book by its cover. Or in this case, by its spec sheet

  • takis takis

Sony is many years in cellphone market ,I use sony from K750i and I prefer Z2 because sony is more reliable and has more features from 1+
One plus just started ,I want to wait and see 1+ after some time when they will have been grown up as a company.
But I agree with 1+ on memory and price is very honest.

  • Amir

No. i’d rather buy Z2, or wait for Z2 Ultra or Z3.

  • Exodite

    Yes, definitely.

The price, clean design and lack of flaps over the ports are huge upsides for me.

The size, dedicated space for capacitive buttons, lack of band 8 LTE and reliance on CM (as opposed to AOSP) would be downsides.

Now I won’t be getting either but if I had to choose one the OnePlus One is a clear winner for me.

  • Krisfromf

Design is really modern and techno. But backside all plastic, it will look crappy after half year of heavy usage …

  • Ben

Also, the Z2 has an FM radio, which at least for me is a useful feature. Or it will be when it arrives :-)

  • nfs2010

I thought OPO has a magnesium body. Either way, I would pick Sony’s UI, walkman, and camera app over CM any day. Z2 camera will be better than whatever Sony sensor they put on OPO.

  • alex

IMHO – OnePlus One is much more profitable to buy than an expensive Z2

  • Battal Aljadei

    i’ll wait for z3 for snapdragon 805, because i don’t understand why sony’s chosed 801AB over 801AC !!!

  • Filipp

the price of xperia is just unacceptable
the screen size of oneplus is unacceptable too
so, I will wait for mi3s, which will be obviously better

  • xperiafan324

It’s a magnesium build, not plastic. smh

  • xperiafan324

    Short answer : No.
Long answer : If for whatever reason, the Z2 did not exist, then this would by far be the benchmark flagship in the world of android, but right now it’s going to have tp settle for the silver (or bronze depending on your tolerance for HTC’s Ultrapixelated camera setup). Really impressive stuff though, especially considering that this is the start-up’s first effort.
Basically, it is FAR fairer to compare it to the Nexus 5 because that is the price point of this device, and unlike the Nexus 5, the OnePlus one will be this cheap the world over, and not just America.

  • sameer

Xperia Z2 has stereo speaker on the front side and not at the bottom

  • Colby Leong

Yeah its hard to move away from Sony phones after you have used one, and tried out all of their special apps, such as the Walkman. Though if I never had an Xperia the OnePlus does sound like a great phone, and while I don’t consider an IP rating as a must, but more a great plus, I find myself eating messy sandwiches then touching my phone because I know I can just wash it off.

  • RememberMe

I’d buy a OnePlus One for the price only.

  • DStyle

    OMG!!! Definitely a B I G NO to 1+1
    SONY is the best.

  • Micro

it’s still plastic – only a little more durable

  • mllddl

    lol HKD $299… that’s $40 USD

  • jonny

I DONT FCKING CARE ABOUT “BOTTOM FACING STEREO SPEAKERS” THEY ARE TOO CLOSE TO EVEN GIVE STEREO SEPERATION. FUCK YOU ONEPLUS :)

  • solidpig

To be fair, price is an issue for some people. The Z2 is by far a superior phone, without a doubt.
But, it costs quite a bit. As the saying goes, you get what you pay for. I cant afford an off contract z2,so there’s a high chance I’ll be going for the one plus. For its price, it’s performance sounds really great – on paper at least. I’ll have to see how it is in reality, but I think it’s finally time to move on from my Xperia P.

If Sony made something at this price with this level of performance, I’d buy it in a heartbeat. But alas, their 300 dollar phones aren’t comparable.

And of course, you’re spot on with Sammy. Not premium, and not cheap too. Not worth it.

  • jj

    Nope.

  • Gary Ohanian

Looks nice. Good features. Saw an early review of it last night and it seems to be fine. What I’d like to know is:

    1. What hardware support do you get with it? People may say that Sony customer service is not the best, but it’s there. You can take a phone to a certified repairer. What options do you have with 1+1?

    2. I’d need to test obviously, but with thin side bezels, would holding it in one hand possibly cause the screen to register touches from the fingers on the side?

    3. What implications does this phone have to do with patents? Being independent, they wouldn’t have a large patent portfolio. What if someone comes (eg MS) and asks for royalties for FAT. Is that in the cost at the moment? The likely fall-back will be that CM is based on AOSP? So what would this implicate Google directly into the patent disputes? Other companies can ward off some claims with their patent portfolio. Can One plus One defend itself?

  • vcsg01

I wanted a Sony phone but they take so long to come to market in the US if ever that I probably will just go with the one plus. Sold on the 64gb model

  • wei147

    Can I take both?

  • Billy de Fretes

maybe after 4-5 years then i will consider 1+1,

  • turboguy

we are sony fanboys we won’t accept anything else

  • Timbo1

No. If I want CyanogenMod on my phone I will put it on it.

  • Akuma

One+ is a dope phone lets be honest…i would opt for it over Z2…its jus different. I love sony but this time ummm i would kiss goodbye

  • Akuma

These phones have almost the same hardware…or specs…its jus bout the price…

  • [A]dri[A]n

Definitely. I think the OnePlus One will give you a better experience overall. I’ll definitely be getting one if I can.

  • Huge Sony Fanboy

with that price, it’ll definitely be a sweet deal, but, the fact that the One Plus One doesn’t provide external storage ability is a big turn off, i’ll rather spend more to get the Z2, if i have some extra cash, i’ll probably go for Oppo Find 7, at least that model have better display, new products are bound to have some glitch or manufacturing defects, Sony over some newly startup brand, anytime….

  • Micro

you are right, the price is an issue, for me too – I couldn’t afford the Z1, especially on pre-order, without some help of my bank. I’m still paying for it since September.
I’m just saying that the price might be a problem, but it is not everything. After over half of a year with Z1 i know, that I made a right decision and I would make it another time without a blink of an eye. I moved from Xperia S at the time (it was not cheap either), but I still have both phones and believe me – I really wouldn’t give away that XS in exchange for 1+1 even if it wouldn’t cost me a cent.
And Sammy.. well.. for me they are just overpriced and over-advertised, poor quality phones. Not bad at specs, no. Just like you said, not premium and not worth it (no hating for Sammy, I swear).

  • utsav koju

One+1 is really an economic highend smartphone. We can buy 3 +1′s with the cost we spend on xz2. Again cynogenmod has promised 2 years of software update over hardly/rarely/delayed software update by Sony. For me +1 is my favorite.

  • Noven

Undoubtedly, a failed product from China

In China, Oneplus is not run cm, but a disgusting “Color OS”

  • JG

Yes, for my wife, but not for me. Monster spec for a cheap price!

  • Tux

    Yes, of course.
    Because of teh price.

I’ll stay on Xperia Z serie only if the price goes down

  • Alfino Setya

Never Ever Buy Chinese Smartphone even Korean Smartphone, Only Buy Sony and Apple! Never Interest with Samsung, Oppo, and 1+1=2!

  • JB

    I’m judging with my wallet…

  • Varun Bansal

    Maybe mid May

  • Mahesh Babu

Definitely one plus one. Price matters.

  • Mohammed Khired

come on man ,it’s not that plastic…

it’s just remind me of xperia ZL , which to me it’s better than xperia Z

less bezel , no bullshit design….

this’s a beautiful phone no matter what , better than samsung shit…

i like the texture on the black one

  • Sal3m
  • Sal3m

Its cheap and goood, but It is 5.5″ its huge to me and no waterproof which is important to me.

  • Sumo

Z2 wins definitely. However, the One Plus does look interesting… though not interesting enough to win hearts. But it does look better than Samsung’s Galaxy Ass phone(s).

  • abreu

The buttons have two ways. Can be capacitive or you can change in definitions to software keys

  • Jonathan TAM

I have also been eagerly waiting for the Sony Xperia Z1 Compact
    My dream phone:
    Sony
    3 GB ram
    4.5 inch FHD display
    Small bezel
    Snapdragon 801
    Sony 20.7 mp camera
    8 mm thickness
    ip 55/58

  • inderjeet

yes …i wud lov to go for such a cheap and technology filled phone…but it isnt launching in india :-(

    Z2 is crap.

First, you can’t see it AT ALL in the sunlight. My friend has an iPhone 5s and I can see it perfectly in the sunlight.

Also, the speakers are crap. I can barely hear anything in a mildly noisy arera. The speakers are worse than Samsung speakers.

The only good thing about the Z2 is the camera. Wait. I can’t even see the screen outside…forget about taking pictures.

The last straw was this incident. I accidentally dropped the phone on my granite counter top while I was talking to my friend. Funny enough, the screen had totally shattered and it wouldn’t turn on.

Now I have to go get it fixed with Sony’s crap customer support. Never buying a sony phone again.

    z2 all the way

  • Moderator

the z2 is pretty bad. one plus one pwns its…thing’s incident with the z2 makes it even worse. i would buy the one plus one without hesitation.

  • technoballs

I don’t know what is with all the Sony hate. Get over it. The Z2 is not the best phone specs-wise i admit but you aren’t going to notice the difference between the OPO and the Z2.

The Z2′s camera is the best smartphone camera by far and its not just me that is saying this. It was rated the best camera by DxOMark. It even beat the Lumia 1020.

The waterproofing is probably the best feature on the Z2. I love people’s faces when they see me wash a little dirt off. Try doing that with and crapple iphone or even the OPO.

The screen is mind-blowingly beautiful. It isn’t oversaturated like the S5 or too dull like the M8. It is a little hard to read in direct sunlight but in normal conditions you shoudn’t have any problems.

The UI is light and smooth almost like stock android and the pre-installed apps are few and helpful.

All in all, this is probably the best phone since the old htc one.

screw off iphone, S5 and M8

  • Tomás Orwell

I bought a Z2 and I loved it for the first eight days. On the eight day I accidentally dropped it into the sink while i did the dishes. The ports were closed so I wasn’t worried. I got it out in about 30 seconds. The phone wouldn’t turn on. I called Sony’s crap customer support and they said to take it to the store ,I did, they said it water damaged. They said the warranty dosnt cover water damage. What a waste of $700. I’m getting a 5S.

    SCREW YOU SONY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
