Xperia ZL2 (SOL25) announced for au by KDDI: 5-inch, Snapdragon 801, 20.7MP camera

by XB on 8th May 2014

in Videos, Xperia - Japan Models

Xperia ZL2_12Sony Japan has this morning launched the Xperia ZL2 (SOL25) for Japanese carrier au by KDDI. The handset shares many of the same features found in the Xperia Z2, although there are differences. You will notice from the Xperia ZL2 pictures below that the handset design is different to the Xperia Z2, the ZL2 has a plastic back as opposed to the glass one found in the Z2.

The Xperia ZL2 has a smaller 5.0-inch 1080p display (Xperia Z2: 5.2-inch) and a sealed 3000mAh battery (Xperia Z2: 3200mAh). These design changes result in a smaller, but thicker handset. The Xperia ZL2 has dimensions of 137 × 72 × 10.8 mm, whereas the Xperia Z2 has dimensions of 146.8 x 73.3 x 8.2 mm. The Xperia ZL2 is also heavier at 167g (Xperia Z2: 163g).

The Xperia ZL2 also has Full-Seg support, the only other difference is that the Xperia ZL2 has internal storage of 32GB, compared to 16GB for the Z2. Other features remain the same including the Snapdragon 801 (MSM8974AB) chipset, 3GB RAM, 20.7MP Exmor RS rear camera, VGA (0.3MP) front-facing camera and IP55/IP58 certification.

The Xperia ZL2 will be released at the end of May 2014 in three colours (black, white and turquoise). We love the turquoise version and hope Sony launches such a choice outside Japan at some point in the future.

    Who so fat!?

  • xperiaDROID

Beautiful! Looks kinda like the Xperia ZR lol.

  • Prateek Bhanushali

It vl be slimmer when it vl be released outside japan.(Past Records)…. May be infra-red sensor makes it thicker !!

  • imparanoic

    is there removeable battery?

  • Was gonna say, more like ZR2 instead of ZL2. Plus I think there’s too much bezel to be worthy of ZL’s sucessor

  • Siberian Messenger

It’s really not the successor of Xperia ZL also it is named Xperia ZL2… in terms of bezel and waterproof feature

  • Sture Karlsson

    Why not the 805….

  • Siberian Messenger

Opps… my fault, the word ‘also’ should be ‘although’

  • XperiaBlog

It doesn’t have an IR blaster.

  • XperiaBlog

    Nope, it is sealed.

  • i absolutely love the song

oh and this phone was announced by sony japan on facebook it was entirely unknown when they posted about it not a single english article about it

  • rygarto

    “Sealed battery” means not removable.

  • i also think if the front was turquoise too that it would be beautiful

  • Siberian Messenger

Yeah, the music in Xperia Japan model PV is really better than its international model PV

  • rygarto

I’m guessing so it feels better in the hand.

  • Prateek Bhanushali

Ok…I thought it was traditionally present !!

  • Luca

What about the bezels? They seem a lot bigger than ZL’s.

  • 3rdflyleaf

Looks more like a bigger ZR!

  • xperiaDROID

The music in the Xperia international model PV is better imo.

  • xperiaDROID

I wonder why Sony doesn’t include IR blaster on their phones anymore, it’s a useful feature.

  • Shreenit Shahapurkar

This is should rather be the Xperia ZR2!

  • Tech Gospel

Sony needs to seriously narrow down their product range and focus all resources on just a few products. This is exactly the problem they had when they were still Sony Ericsson. Too many products, not enough resources to support them all quickly. This is why software updates and bug fixes get rolled out slowly. This is why the public isn’t aware of other models, they get neglected in the marketing budget. Sony, please focus!

  • Rafay

Actually this is successor of Xperia UL(sol22) which was exclusive for KDDI, which wasn’t launched globally, so I don’t expect ZL2 to be launched globally, which is sad!

  • Siberian Messenger

What about Samsung? They still got a bunch of models from flagship to entry level. But their support to each phone seems much quicker than Sony Mobile’s.

  • laci_csk

“each phone”, you must be jokeing?

  • Siberian Messenger

In fact, Xperia UL is the exclusive custom model of globally launched Xperia Z for the Japanese carrier au. So Xperia ZL2 is the exclusive custom model of Xperia Z2, brought to you by au.

  • Tech Gospel

Samsung has way more resources than Sony. Sony has been downsizing like crazy. Samsung has beaten them in sales in almost all fronts. TV, Home appliances, PC and mobile. Sony cannot seriously think they can play the same game as Samsung at this point. They need to focus and climb back up. The Z1 and Z1 compact are just gaining ground, but if they start slowing down to support all the other so-so models they’re releasing… this could be the NXT line (U, P, and S) all over again.

  • Siberian Messenger

If I’m joking, that means Samsung did a BAD job of supporting their mid-range phones too.

  • Tech Gospel

This is true, Galaxy S Blaze was never updated past GB

  • XperiaBlog

Traditionally yes, but it’s becoming increasingly rare in the last few Japanese Xperia models. Even the upcoming Z2 for DoCoMo is rumoured not to feature infra-red.

  • Siberian Messenger

What Sony has done is aborting its PC business… They bet their last dollar on Xperia product line. Facing the fierce competition in Android handset market, if Xperia has only a few models, they will definitely be overwhelmed by Samsung in market share. The delay of Xperia Z2 can explain this situation.

  • Mac

Because then they will not sell any z2’s. Too early for a new flagship.

  • d

this doesn’t look as compact as the Xperia ZL though… and its even thicker.. i wouldve thought the Xperia ZL2 will have same hardware as Z2, but in a relatively same size. a maximum width for one handed use is of 70mm. anything beyond this, and its not possible anymore..

  • Afnan Muhammad

This is probably Japan only model. Xperia Z2 is not available in Japan so they get this one instead. Even LG and Samsung always release different model for Japan. LG Isai and Galaxy J.

  • Afzal Zainal Rddz

Iam seing it as a ZR2 not a ZL. Hurmmm

  • Prateek Bhanushali

Got it :) Thnx for the info…

  • Abdul Ghani

the good thing about vs z2 is the 32 gb internal sony should keep 32 or 64 gb internal in their new flagships

  • blitz_arc

    Sony, new design please!

  • Colin M Murphy

WTF were are the IR blasters SONY!!!!!

  • Rob

That’s what I thought as well when I saw it, but then again the display is quite a bit larger than that of ZR. Looks like a blend between the two, and I guess they saw more value in having it as a successor to ZL.

  • Gene Kim

Global release, please! I really love this design!
there must be someone who doesn’t like the metalic frame and the glassy back
    of the Z1/2, just like me… :-(

  • Siberian Messenger

    Maybe we’ll see it in Z3 :)

  • xperiaDROID

New design will be seen starting from the Z3.

  • Siberian Messenger

The original Xperia Z2 will be released in Japan by NTT Docomo in their 2014 summer models, model number SO-03F, probably in this or the next month.

  • Steven

Wouldn’t expect any dramatic changes to be honest.

  • Afzal Zainal Rddz

i bet their are putting a big stop for ZR. the back cover look very similar to some device i know if it include thread stitching :) overall not a bad looking device and iam still waiting the real ZL with slimmer bezel.. maybe ZL3…

  • jmaxim917

Really nice phone, form factor, 5″ display. Would have been ideal if it had IR. Would definitely consider it but don’t think it will get to the US market, ever.

  • Ziich

ever since i moved from the z to the nexus 5, i am of the belief that no 5 inch phone should be bigger than a nexus 5.

  • Guest

    No one saw this coming.

  • Tech Gospel

They already are overwhelmed. The delay is exactly my point. Samsung can afford to do so because they already are the leader. Sony needs to make money, spreading themselves too thin isn’t gonna improve product support. The strongest they’ve been was when they decided to reboot and just had the Xperia Z. That lasted a few months then they started diluting the brand with off low/mid models that don’t really stand out. Focusing on 3 strong models that get updates quickly and have few bugs would do them much better than what Samsung is doing. Again, Samsung has the resources to spare. Sony doesn’t. The Z1, Z1 Compact, Ultra, and Tablet should be what they concentrate on. Unified and speedy updates, and universally compatible docks.

  • Kater

    I wonder whether zr2 will comes out……

  • Gitarooman

This should be called ZR2, not ZL2, ZL means tiny bezel.

  • Siberian Messenger

I agree. It’s like a vicious circle or something like the Mattew effect: the stronger is getting stronger, and weaker is doomed to be weaker… But imo what Sony really to work hard at this time is marketing stategy. Sony rarely makes huge advertisements on its phones and spreads widely. I’ve never seen any Xperia ads in any form in my region. On the opposite their 4K TV still has some budgets on its ads. Samsung’s system updates still have bugs, but it doesn’t matter its sales thanks to its overwhelming ads (Maybe Koreans like to use all of the fancy points to catch people’s eyes, that’s really different to Japanese’s cultural atmosphere). In fact Sony DID do some great jobs in some area like Spain, India and Taiwan. They’ve got the second market share just behind Samsung.

  • Lunkz

I agree you. Sony is a company from Nippon, and Japan stands for Quality in Electronic Products. But Sony needs to focus on quality again, we don’t need a second Samsung.

I want a solid, well tested phone ( QM ), which has a good Support ( Updates, Service, etc. ). Then I’m willing to buy a Phone for >600 € who last more then 6-12 months.

  • Afzal Zainal Rddz

Hard to confirm on that since sony already had z1 compact equaly what zr shoud had now and even better in spec.

  • Bob

You have to realise that these bezels are as small as they can be on a phone with so much hardware. The ZL2 has a 3000 mAh battery, quite a lot bigger than the 2370 mAh battery in the ZL. The massive 20.7 mp camera takes up loads of space (which is probably why the top bezel is so big) and the waterproofing of the device makes it bigger as well. And don’t forget the dual front facing speakers, they take up space at the top and bottom.

  • Afzal Zainal Rddz

Actually sony play by the rules… Other maker do the samething even apple starting following the trend by introduce 2 iphone 5s and 5c ( maybe more in future ). Providing choices is not a bad thing to do. As long the price point suite everyone budget. Releasing the device at the same exact times samsung releasing their famous S series in the market can harm z2 sales and attn. The fact how good sony bring on the table there is no way sony can beat samsung sales figure. Now z2 already back in action and most smartphone reviewer starting to do unboxing and device reviewer ( retailer units )for z2 and the attn will be back to z2 after most viewer paying attn to s5. For example htc one m8 starting their sell around the same period samsung release s5 on the market but end up the htc one m8 sales not impressing even tho its build 10x better then s5. Yes sony will loose some new customer for their late but not entirely .

Regarding software updates i think sony already on the right track but still had some flaws and issue that still can be fix. :-)

  • Bob

Is it just me that thinks this phone is actually really good? Like seriously, 5.2″ is too big for a phone, but with the ZL2 they’ve kept it normal sized with pretty small bezels too. If it had an aluminium back and was a bit thinner, I could honestly imagine it being released worldwide. I’d buy it over the Z2, let alone any other flagships.

  • au

The same case with Xperia UL, where it was not the successor of Xperia U.

  • au

To tell you, Xperia ZL2 is another variant of Xperia Z2 which is specifically made for KDDI. It’s not the successor of both Xperia ZR and Xperia ZL.

  • au

I like if they dare to use clamshell design for their next Xperia series.

  • alex

Agree, Marketing budget. And two flagship per year, it’s also too bad!

They do, trying to compete with Samsung by releasing so much different devices. Especially since Samsung has more money, and their devices are generally cheaper. However those many low end devices does bring in money for Sony, it’s one of the reasons they dominate in places like India. Honestly it wouldn’t be too much of an issue if Sony just pushed their devices harder (that’s what she said). In the states I have seen almost a hundred of the same S5 waterproof commercial, that’s money that could have gone to the Z1 or 2, both devices above the S5.

I’m excited that they did end up releasing a ZL2, it’s like the best of Sony without IP.

  • Colby Leong

It’s sad because those were some great ads, most of Sony’s ads are great. And a lot of people here in the states are sheep. They go to their mobile stores and ask, “what’s good”, and majority of the time they end up buying a iPhone, or Galaxy. What’s sad is that if Sony just threw their phones at the major carriers here, and put ads like these up all over, on T.V, YouTube, places like Hulu, or even the little ads when you watch porn, they could sell a lot of phones.

  • Colby Leong

It does look more of a mid-range than like the high end ZL. For me it’s the backing of the phone that sort of gives off a cheap Samsung vibe.

  • arcwindz

No, no, you certainly don’t know what zl means lol
There is no waterproofing, and the bigger battery as well as camera module is being accomodated with a thicker device.
It’s probably the dual front speaker that makes the increase in top and bottom bezel as well as the ‘normal’ placement of front camera

Of course there is nothing wrong with giving people options and choices. The problem comes from spreading themselves too thin. Just like they did during the NXT line. If Sony only had the 3 phones, U, P & S and gave them proper support.. those would’ve been a hit. Product placement in their depts is off too. Amazing Spider-Man 2 features old models that are no longer being sold. WTF? Realistic perhaps, but useless marketing expense. That’s what I mean by focusing. Sony is all over the place. A problem Apple had in the late 80’s and 90’s before Steve Jobs came back. Too many bland products diluting the great ones they have.

  • Ashad Mamood

This is a great phone! The bezels are small and it’s more manageable in the hand. Sony just need to slim it down now and lose some of the weight. Also include an IR blaster please!

  • Shreenit Shahapurkar

I second that actually! The ZL had a class of its own, I wish the back would have been a little different and the thickness a little less. It would have been a quintessential ZR2 then! I hope the European/International model is different!

  • Colby Leong

Plus the red on the ZL looked great, a color option they should include more

  • Shreenit Shahapurkar

But instead they ditch the purple and red and bring out a turquoise. I have mixed feelings towards that.

  • Colby Leong

I do like the turquoise on the ZL2. The one thing I did like about the original ZL is that the whole phone was the same color. The front bezels were the same as the back, I always felt that brought a more uniform design. Instead of the white or purple on the Z1/2 just being the back and sides.

  • laci_csk

just for your information, and for you to donot missinform other people read this:

Galaxy S3 is not a midrange right? Then how about the midrange…

  • 3rdflyleaf

Yeah. Confusing naming scheme. We all thought that ZL was supposed to be the non waterproof less bezel version of the Z. But with ZL2, I don’t know anymore. -_-

  • 3rdflyleaf

Then they shouldn’t have named it ZL2.

their problem is that they don’t spend enough so that the ads get noticed, but they are still great

  • Colby Leong

No doubt they’re great, Sony is awesome, and they have the resources and brain to not only produce great handsets, but to be a true competitor. The Z2 wasn’t too much of an upgrade over the Z1. But it does hold a great middle ground between the M8 and S5, while it may not have that nice in the hand aluminum or the not-so-great fingerprint sensor, the Xperia Z2 is a great well rounded device. It has better than decent stereo speakers, and a higher IP, it’s camera runs circles around the M8, and it’s all packaged in a much better looking handset than the S5. If Sony released the Z2 or any of its predecessors on the four major carriers in the States there should be no reason they can’t start making a lucrative profit.
