    PC Companion, come on !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Micro

Runs like a charm! Very smooth UI again, no more Wi-Fi disconnects, bluetooth once again works flawlessly! Definitely “must-have”. UI have changed a little bit (like call screen, dial pad, the AWESOME “call” button directly on the SMS screen, and many more!). Don’t loose so much power any more (relatively, I never had problems with it but now the battery bar seems flat even with my poor reception here). Camera indeed runs a bit faster, I didn’t notice much image quality changes tho. Stamina icon is “fixed” (doesn’t show “+” sign next to the battery when in charger). Some fonts were tweaked too.
    Overall very nice update!
Oh, and extremely easy to root without any flashing:

    Thanks Sony, great surprise :))

    Xperia Z waiting :)

  • fiestast2014

maybe i buy this phone . i have think that newest phone gets it first , z2 . but probably not when this is rolling now as the first manufacture to roll out 4.4.4:)

  • Micro

yeah, my Z2 Tablet felt offended by this update :D

  • Arctoze

    C6902 pls

  • Theo

Just curious. Does anyone know if 4.4.4 will be available for Xperia Z? We all know that 4.4.2 is a complete disaster, especially in the battery department.

  • Abdul Ghani

so everything is fixed but camera image quality

  • Micro

    I didn’t say it’s bad (IMO it’s not). I just said I didn’t notice much changes ;)

  • Vishal Sonawane

    What about C6902 ???

  • guest

Nothing for Z Ultra C6806 (US version) yet in the update checker

  • Samesung

damn you sony when will they fix camera image quality ?

  • Abdul Ghani

well its good many bugs are fixed still dont know how to tell sony that just remove the post processing and compression from their camera software for low light pictures

  • Pingback: ????????? Xperia Z1, Z1 Compact ? ?????? Xperia Z Ultra ?????? ???????? ?????????? ?? Android 4.4.4 KitKat | IT-Info()

  • Micro

That’s how I see this – they took everyone by surprise, made it perfect on the system side. Now all other brands have to make their run. So now Sony have plenty of time, instead of producing more bugs here and there, to work on just one thing – the freaking camera ;)
let’s hope they will, the camera is very powerful, but it still needs some work.

  • 0A05

    What about Xperia Z??? :(

  • DavidMCano1

The Android 4.4.4 firmware is currently rolling out to the Xperia Z1 C6903 and Xperia Z Ultra C6833 variants from what we can see.

  • Now the question is:
How do you go from 4.4.2 that’s already rooted to 4.4.4 while keeping all root apps (as well as non-root actually) intact?

Sometimes minor updates let users keep root. Does anyone know if this is one of those minor updates or is this just major enough to lose root when updating? :|

  • CK

“andd Android 4.4.4; KitKat rolling (phased) for #XperiaZ1, #ZUltra & #Z1Compact – app improvements, camera tweaks, security updates & more!”

  • Nawi

    and ZL =)

  • Micro

Of course I lost my root in the process. I had stock (not rooted) .761 FW before. I have rooted it with the “make it rain” (armed with some patch), so no flashing was needed. I installed then Super SU and so on, and made my changes (pen mode, sd fix, some sys apps uninstall etc).
Today I used PCC, that doesn’t wipe “data”, so my apps were there intact, only they stopped working because .108 caused the root gone.
Then I found another rootkit, because that from Z1c won’t work any more (I posted a link above) and rooted again. All root apps are working again (I had to reinstall Super SU because binaries were lost) and made my customizations again.
.108 removes root, you have to root it again. But it doesn’t involve any flashing (in fact, it was like 10 seconds to actually do it).

  • grav1ty

congratulations to all Z1 and ZU owners, really.. I like it how Sony pushed this update quickly.. but we, owners of Z are very disappointed. First we have waited for month to get KitKat, now we have a laggy device with extreme battery drains.. Scrolling down the notification bar is very laggy, scrolling in the options menu is very laggy.. Even writing with new Xperia Keyboard is very laggy.. All these problems were non-existing in 4.3 aka JB. I hope our Z won’t be treated like the Xperia S.. Hope Sony will fix those problems with a minor bug-fix update or quickly rollout 4.4.4 for Z also..
Using a device with deactivated Google Services is not a fully functional device..

  • ash

    Any luck

  • laci_csk

Xperia S cannot be updated not because Sony don’t want that, but because of Qualcomm you know that, or you are a troll?

  • Luca

    Did Sony forget about us?

  • MikeViller

next year they will be forgotten also the z3 will be out …. lol

  • Actman

I thought I heard a news from gsmarena notifying us that SAMEsung is testing and prepare to launch 4.4.3 ahead as soon as (before) google releasing it? Hmmm I was wondering where is it now? Perhaps SAMEsung’s KITKAT is much more creamier and tastier!

  • Deki

Does the direct call shortcut show contact image? Is this fixed? :-)

    strange for Z2,,,

  • Reza

i use xperia z with 230 build number and i don’t think that all your disappointed was true, the keyboard is working smoothly it’s better and faster than JB 4.3

  • sora77

Like you I just rooted last week with towelroot(make it rain). So it doesn’t work anymore? Is your root app as easy as towelroot?

  • Micro

it doesn’t, it was some patch for the towel’s kit, now it just freezes
but the second one is the same simple, even simpler because it doesn’t need you to do or click anything – “run it and forget”, root done

  • Ado Kanashii

JUST ONE QUESTION.. does the click sound was messed up like the 4.3 ? or does still has the same nice ps3 4.4 click sound?

  • SkyS1gn

WTF? They get 4.4.4. before the Z2?

  • Camillian

Does anyone think we will get Android “L” for Xperia Z1 since it was released September last year so its been 9 months, If Android “L” releases for december / january are we going to get it?

  • Stanley08

Lol. Even Z1 Compact Got before Z2. I’m a crying Z2 user here. xD

I just wanna simply say thanks Sony for this fast and greatly effective update.

  • grav1ty

Nope.. Surely you dont know about those problems with .230 FW.. There are many user complaining about performance issues worldwide.. This is definitely not a specific problem.. Sure, there are user with no problems on their XZ, but that doesnt mean, that everything is ok..

  • grav1ty

YOU are not representing the general dude.. Just go through XDA or official Sony forum threads.. in FACT there are performance issues with .230 update.. Some ppl dont have it, but many people do.. including me

  • grav1ty

If i were a troll, then you fed it..
Im not talking about Xperia S “major” updates, im talking about fixing bugs, which was a legendary thing on Xperia S

Was the heating issue been fixed?! This was my biggest concern, second being fast battery drain. Thanks to anyone who can answer.

  • Steven Khoo Skkl

Well,I have the XZ C6603, and I personally think it’s a hit or miss with. 230.. But if you do get. 233.. I doubt you would complain much.. Plus,I don’t think you have and XZ,so you wouldn’t know..And I for me,a simple reboot over several days help reduce it substantially.. Oh and the little thing most people don’t say is how much they have in their internal memory.. I used to max it out, but since I don’t play any of them,I cleared them and voila, smooth..Memory affects them..Remember,we,the XZ community uses a much slower LPDDR2…

  • finch35

Just updated my z1 to 4.4.4.. Super smooth!!!

Finally my biggest Problems are solved :O
    – Bluetooth Battery Drain problem solved (now i can use my SmartWatch 2 again!!!) and i have less than 1% per 2 hours in Standby (LifeLog still needs a lot of battery though but it is acceptable now)
    – Wifi Bandwith Problem Solved (it was something special to my network and i had this problem since Xperia S and Xperia Z, Full bandwith after fresh connection but then it goes down to 1MBit after a while, maximum of 30min)
    – Camera Performance massively improved and overall system performance (app switching) also improved
Now i’m happy with my Z1 again :)

It’s almost impossible to get a handle on Sony’s update process. Last year, they updated newer devices first as always but this time the older devices are getting it first. Perhaps the plan to add some new features to the update for z2 and don’t want z1 users to cry about that so they’re getting theirs out of the way first. Who knows!! Sony’s just such a strange company.

Does that work for the Z Ultra? thanks.

I honestly have no idea, I don’t have ZU

  • Nipun Sharma

It sure does. My camera is overheating and shutting down after taking just 8-10 pictures. And the battery drain in standby mode overnight (around 6 hours) crosses 10% .. This is ridiculous

I’m from Phil.too bro… Check your Sony companion. Because it’s not available via OTA

    ftf world generic someone????

  • Micro

I did a small test. Team Win Recovery was very handy so I didn’t loose anything :)
There are significantly LESS artifacts (those random white noise areas). Overall quality didn’t change much on any other scene I tried, every time it seems to be a little bit less noise in very low light photos, and much less of the white noise.
This one, however, shows the real change when shooting from close distance.
First photo I shoot from .757 FW, the second one after the update to the .108. I tried my best to take those as fast as possible one after another, so the ambient light don’t change and from the very same distance the same crop.
Both are 1:1 crops, in Superior Auto mode. What was interesting, the first one had ISO64, and the second is ISO100, so theoretically the second one should have more noise and be more grainy (it has some white artifacts tho). Surprisingly, the ISO100 photo by .108 FW looks a WAY better- especially much more detailed. And yes – I took several pics on each probe to avoid any accidents.
So actually, something has been done there. It’s not perfect, not even close to it, but IMO – to Sony: From now on, that’s how you update your cameras!

  • puya LF

Will it work on ultra 6802?

And no other OEMs have even published their 4.4.4 rollout plan

  • Abdul Ghani
  • Cool2B

it is the stock firmware from sony. It won’t void your warranty not like other custom rom which need to unlock the bootloader which eventually void your warranty. instead of waiting for the PCC or SUS to do the update, you can flash it using the FTF file.

Is it only via PC companion? Z1 asks to connect to computer for update :/
Previous updates i did on the phone.

  • Gary Ohanian

I just used the Sony Update service (Not PC Companion).

I did have OTA update to 4.4.2 before but for some reason there was another update that wasn’t part of the OTA but still 4.4.2. Sorry iof that’s unclear.

Basically previously, I used only OTA up to 4.4.2. Then did a Update Service while still on 4.4.2 (and it did update something but not sure what) I don’t think that update was possible via OTA. Then today I ran Update Service again and it updated to 4.4.4

  • skep

Right thanks,, yeh i had the 442 update sitting there for a while but didnt touch it cos the build# was identical & also wanted the pc.

So basically no OTA on the 4.4.4 update *sigh* no choice then i guess

    Thnx mate!

  • Xperia Z1 Dude

I’m on 4.4.2 right now, and both PC Companion and the Update Service is saying I have the latest software! I guess I’ll just wait a bit longer, not that big of a deal really :) Just stuck with a laggy camera and a hypersensitive touch screen haha

actually there is a bug – smartwach2 app crashes when a call is received from any contact with a picture assigned to it. Seems everyone with kk 4.4.4 have the same problem. Only happens to the “smart call handling extension”, but it gets a bit annoying if many ppl call you
but I forgive them this tiny bug, because after this update my Z1 officially stopped using the battery AT ALL :D

If you want to check if the update is already available for your device on your own, download the “Xperia Update Checker by Macmol” in the following link

  • Vishal Khedkar

I said that because Sony failed to give a good 4.4.2 for XZ even when they took so long. NOW a bug fux update for that is coming, in the 233 firmware when Z1 has got 4.4.4. Just imagine when the Z will get it. And, also they haven’t released the 233 firmware for all. So far only Hong Kong. That makes me sad as a customer. They are not paying attention to Z, which is not too old.

Most manufacturers just want to make more and more devices, because people also encourage them by buying. They then don’t concentrate on delivering quality service to people like me.

  • sethdev

    1276-4318 now rolling

  • Burak

z1c firmware build 14.3.E.0.1 and 14.3.A.0.769 had been certified but didn’t be rolled. maybe z would be receive 4.4.4 without getting 233.

  • fbh

But if u install c6833 ram on c6802, it drains its battery like hell, for me, on fresh install it consumes 1.3 gb ram just after reboot, with prev rom, it used to be 800 mb, now i ve to charge everyday, sometimes twice a day, with prev ron i charged once every 2 or 3 days(at times). Hence i reverted back to 4.2 instead of 4.3( cz till date ver .136 has the best battery nd ram usage till date. Will wait for 4.4.4 for c6802 nd check the usage.

  • jack_daniels

  • Sadman Khan

I have very good battery actually. It doesn’t drain battery like hell. Maybe it was a problem with older builds. Or you just forgot to put the Network Mode on GSM. LTE would drain battery even if you cannot use it on c6802 as it keeps searching for those networks.

  • Ricardo Ca

    C6843 is receiving the update.

  • Abu Saleq Rocky

Superb performance on my z1 C6902 after 4.4.4 update. Super stable. Battery improved almost 40 percent. Now I didn’t use stamina mode. It’s the best update ever for Z1

  • fbh

it will,,, but will drain your battery like hell
u might end up charging twice a day(with normal amount of calls)

  • fbh

looks like they won’t update for c6802(no matter which country), they strated treating it as an outdated model

  • fbh

i always used WCDMA mode with my previous version(4.4.2), it worked fine, used to charge once every 2 days or at extreme times, per day, in case i play games for a longer time.
but here, even on doing a fresh install, even on keeping the phone in GSM mode only, switching off GPS, NFC, Wifi, and even now i had to use stamina mode, still i had to charge daily(on listening no music, but with average amount of calls a day).
i reset my phone again, still severe battery drain.
both u and me are using the same handsets(actual c6802, but installed c6833), so there should not be any variation. but wait, ARE YOU ROOTED, and if yes, then by which method?
P.S. i guess rooting has nothing to do with battery issues.

  • MLJO

Update available in Switzerland with PC Companion

  • fbh

guys, finally its out for C6802, the HSPA+ model.
what you need to do is root your xperia ultra c6802 with locked bootloader, if unrooted, use Easy Root Tool v8 or later to do so. Then download ES Explorer, under settings, mount root folder, now go to build.prop and edit your customization no, to 1275-7796, just this much and nothing else. now reboot your phone and try to update using PC Companion only. You shall recieve the 14.4(4.4.4) update.(OTA updates are not released for any device, but even if they are released, this method can’t be used to update via OTA, it can be done only using PC companion 2.1).
for people who are afraid of warranty void issue, your device will be unrooted again and those who want to root can again use the same tool to root. I am already rooted on C6802 4.4.4( i am not talking about Gpe , but exclusive Xperia version).

P.S. This update is exclusively for C6802(not that you are installing C6833 on C6802). It has better battery than installing C6833 on C6802.
Any help, please comment back. :)

  • fbh

    its available now:

    cheers :)

  • Sadman Khan

I rooted using Towelroot for Xperia. I have no problems with battery life seriously. In fact, it has improved for me.

  • gef

    …not yet available in philippines…

  • fbh

its sucking up my battery like an elephant drinking water, after the update. don’t know how it has solved the battery issues for many, but for me(C6802), this update is even more pathetic than .757 (4.4.2) update. a bit laggy interface, and it sucks up so much RAM.
now for those who are telling that i might have been using with WCDMA mode and installed Ram boosters and all, let me remind you again, i was on the same softwares and apps before the update too. it was working fine earlier, but now even after fresh install and using GSM mode and also using Stamina mode, i have to charge my phone twice a day.

From a C6802 user from India.

  • myriam

even i too am facing with severe battery drain issue with too much RAM usage, hence reverted back to the previous ROM(for the time being), even the Gpe version of 4.4.4 is better than this, just that its interface looks old school type, but smooth though, but in my opinion, the latest version of 4.3 jelly bean had the best RAM and battery usage. Downloading 4.3 jelly bean right now.

C6802, with 4.4.4 kitkat user from Malaysia

  • fbh

i updated to the 4.4.4 official version exclusively for c6802, did a clean format, still having battery drain issue without root. Then i rooted and removed maximum bloatwares and all unwanted apps, even deleted facebook(which consumes too much RAM). still not much difference, it still drains my battery as well as uses extensive amount of RAM,hence again charged twice today. got frustrated and installed the last version of 4.3 jelly bean, now its working flawlessly, wit optimum RAM usage and good battery but i can’t enjoy some modified features of 4.4.4

  • Omar Hussain

same here bro, its sucking up my complete RAM even after a fresh install, i thought sony would solve my issues I faced with previous ROM, instead it added to my agony. the .168 version has some sound bug.
Right now on jelly bean 4.3 and everything is working normal.

From my C6802 from Saudi Arabia.

  • nihaal

seriously, this is one of the worst updates from Sony, atleast for C6802, battery and RAM are being used like anything. To solve that to some extent, i reset my phone, now i am unable to download apps using play store, it downloads just max 200-300 Kbs and the downloading icon disappears, but says installing, but i can browse internet very well, looks like some bug with play store thing. even after reset no improvement in battery issue. I am seriously surprised, people commenting about better battery with 4.4.4 update, but i am sure, its the worst for C6802.

  • Razvan

    Please help!
My Z1 still not updating from firmware 757 kitkat 4.4.2. and not a single update since then (3 months already)…Even if I daily check with pc companion and sony update service. I even ran a restore and reinstall the software.
Any idea if its a problem with the phone or just a local delay from the carrier?
    Location Romania btw.
    Appreciate the help anticipated.

4.4.4 Bluetooth headset issue. Now my jawbone cannot connect both media audio and phone audio (it worked perfectly before, and still works on my Tablet Z) … if I connect the phone audio, I cannot get notifications, music, podcasts on my headset. If I enable media audio, I cannot get phone audio on my headset.

  • Richard Bade

Thanks @disqus_lNfVBCtCBW:disqus, that link for rooting my phone really helped! I’d been putting it off because it was too hard.
I was then able to fix the volume being too quiet via this thread at xda:

This phone is now pretty much what I’d hope’d it was from the start! :)

  • Sadman Khan

You definitely have a corrupt file in your sd card. Google search about it. You will find that a lot of people faced issues on kitkat. That file does not let the phone sleep as media scanner keeps running and kills the battery. This happens on kit kat due to the new sd restrictions i think. Anyway a format of the sd card fixes this. Have a look in xda about this

  • Alex D.

Hi! The 4.4.4 update for Z1 and some others have been apparently rolled out on June 27th yet. Philippines has always been first among the few who gets it. However, I have been constantry trying to check on both PC Companion and Sony Update Service, but still says my phone is updated. I have the Xperia Z1 (6903), and still on 4.4.2

Please enlighten me regarding this matter. How come I still don’t have the update? I usually get the updates a day after posting.

Bro, I suggest you reformat your phone although you have a lot of data inside it. I waited so long end up just backup all my data and reformat it. Now my phone can last for 3 days with Data / Wifi on. As this is a major update jumps from Android 4.3 to 4.4 version.

  • dan

after upgrading, how is the battery performance?

    (sorry for my english XD)

  • ???? ??. ????? ?????.

In the last month I updated (14.4.A.0.108) with my Xperia ZR.
But it had a major problem of battery drain, I was hardly able use my fully charged phone for 4-5hrs even after activating STAMINA MODE.
It is the greatest drawback of this update (14.4.A.0.108).

Now I purchased Xperia Z1 Compact, But I still did not update (14.4.A.0.108) my phone.

    Sony solves this problem.

Hi, I also suffered the strange bandwidth problem on my Z1 where the connection would drop to 1Mbit after around 30 mins or so (would have to reconnect to wifi to get full bandwidth back). I thought I was the only one! Thankfully this release has fixed this problem for me too. :-)

My Sony Xperia Z1 has been displaying the message ‘unfortunately email has stopped’ for the past 3 android and Firmware updates.

I have changed email apps and still get the same message. I have cleared the cache, reset the phone, uninstalled and re-installed the email apps, trawled through countless forums for answers and still have the same problem.

I don’t know what to do. Does anyone know how I can stop this from happening?

Can we please get in contact via skype? Although it is fixed now I’m totally curious about what was the reason because it ONLY happened at my home and nowhere else…
so possibly we could find the solution if we compare our network setup?

Should I use windows 7 or 8 to root 14.4.a.0.108 by this method?

  • abmonstein

Go to apps in settings and then go the email app you are not using and force stop it.
