Xperia Z3 specs leaked by @evleaks; not much change from the Xperia Z2

by XB on 23rd July 2014

in Rumours, Xperia Z3 series

Sony logoLeak artist @evleaks has put his hat into the ring into the purported Xperia Z3 (D6653) specifications. Judging by his very good track record, they are probably quite accurate too. On the face of it, the hardware spec-sheet reads very similarly to the current Xperia Z2 flagship.

This includes a higher-clocked processor in the form of the Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 chipset (2.4 GHz quad-core Krait 400 CPU and Adreno 330 graphics). We are most likely looking at the MSM 8974-AC chipset, versus the MSM 8974-AB chipset currently found in the Xperia Z2.

Other specs include a 5.15-inch display with 1080p FHD resolution, 3GB RAM, 16GB internal storage, a 20.7MP Exmor RS rear camera, a 2.1MP front-facing camera and it will launch with Android 4.4.4 KitKat.

So yes, on the face of it in terms of hardware not much has moved in. Perhaps this is where integrated wireless charging comes in?

Thanks Zymo!

  • jonyah

Well, I don’t have buyer’s remorse for getting a Z2. Maybe the Z2 will drop in price now and I can get some for the rest of my family.

  • lovebmw

ZZZZzzzz….ZZZ…. really Sony? at least surprise us with a 64GB storage, bigger battery, android L… .Somrthing….. Boaring….. it would be dumb to move from z2 to z3

Lol! That’s hilarious for all those “I’m going to wait for Z3”!!! I tried to tell them.

  • Kaarthikeyan Swaminathan

And they will start waiting for Z4 :D

  • bobeobi gzigzigzeo

At least Z2 price will drop off

  • Hecateneko?????

    Imma wait for S805…

I think sony will pass on S805 just like they passed on S600.
hopefully Z4 will come with S810

  • zymo

That’s what some “insiders” are saying.

  • lika

Wtf Sony what are u doing . Shouldn’t a new flagshp be much better . No 2k display . No 805 chip no better camera . The camera in Samsung s5 is 10 times better than SonyS camera . The best camera from Sony Ericsson sat in c905 . Only 8 mpixel but so nice pics:-) Sony must do better to compete :-/

  • zymo

If the current rumors about Z4 are true, then it’s worth waiting for it. New soc (s810), sensor, display…an entirely new device and not just a refresh like Z3.

  • Pingback: Xperia Z3(D6653)?????????????? | T's MEDIA()

  • zymo

801 and 805 are not really optimized for 2K displays and it’s not the camera hardware that sucks but software.
Nevertheless I agree with you that a successor to a “flagship” device should be significant better in terms of hw and sw.

  • David Hvatov

Why you need to move from Z2 to Z3? Are you stupid?

  • $$$

    …or he’s just fucki’n ass rich

  • StockMarket

Guess it’ll be time to buy up Sony stocks as they are likely to be dropping the end of this year.

  • techielover

Couldn’t they just release a refreshed version of Z2(which is Already soo awesome) and rather than focus on making something more innovative in terms of Z3 that would have make more SENSE!! Its totally against sony innovation culture!!

  • Jaouad

If everything is the same I think they’ll just release the Z2 in a slightly different version. Perhaps ZL2 or something. Or else these rumours are fake

  • AsadMulla

its like the Arc to Arc S. only difference between the 2 was better processor. Same as Z2 to Z3

  • Abdullah Robben

    16GB of storage again!!
    we want at least 32GB

  • Jiyeon90

Smaller screen than the Z2? This cannot be true, 5.5 is the new 5 inches ä

  • jonyah

They’re taking the browser approach to versioning. Do major version numbers for every little release, that way it looks like you’re progressing faster than the competition.

Seriously though, considering their manufacturing issues and global availability of the Z2, the Z3 will probably do just fine and be a great upgrade for the Z/Z1s users here in the US. Maybe they’ll actually push this one to all or at least some of the carriers over here and didn’t want to try pushing something that officially has been around for 6 months.

  • Luca

    That is horrible news

  • BruceLeeRoyJenkins

I’m moving from the Z1 to the Z3, and for me that’s an upgrade, not a substantial one, but a upgrade worth getting. Hopefully with Sony reducing the screen size the bezels will be smaller…who am i kidding it prolly won’t. Regardless, better screen, more accurate color reproduction, MAYBE a better design, and HOPEFULLY improved software on top of the old hardware and it’ll be good. Plus, I’ve always envied Z2 owners for having the npise cancellation built in to the handset.

  • BruceLeeRoyJenkins

    Z2 Prime? HAHAHAHAHA

  • Billy de Fretes

    can i get one Z2 ? i’m your bro, bro.. i’m your family :D

  • Anukul

and make mad z2 owners who just bought the phone?

  • jonyah

The noise cancelling is nice to have unless you’re trying to use a pressy, ugh. They conflict with each other. Fortunately, if you buy a generic pressy for <$2 it works just fine. I have no clue why, but it just does.

  • Stanley08

  • YuSiang Liao

looks like Z2 plus….no new design

  • BruceLeeRoyJenkins

Not trying to come off rude, but why use a pressy instead of the gorgeous power button, unless it’s broken

  • Makes me feel OK about just ordering the Z2 a day ago. Can’t wait to get it with the DK36 dock and noise canceling headphones. :)

  • Siberian Messenger

    Thanks @evleaks. Anyway I’m to expect Z4 or Z5.

  • Caio Faria

    Holy shit, nothing different.

  • Abdul Ghani

what i want is sony to fix the camera software for z3 and release to z1 z1c and z2 and become camera kings

  • Rammstone

Well if this is true people will surely just buy the Z2 instead since it should be significantly cheaper than Z3 when its out?

  • well, the screen size is less, not much changes in chipset, not much changes in camera, design or even size, then why should i think this is the z3 maybe, these rumors are false, maybe the z3’s about to suprise us

  • lovebmw

i don’t think you got my irony LOL

  • Kunal Shukla

Instead of launching so much models sony should allow their engineers to work on the software aspect ot their phones… it really needs a huge boost to be in competition with other manufacturers

  • Concha

The Z1 and Z2 has the same resolution on the camera but not the same sensor, I have heard. The same for Z3. Z3 could get the same sensor as iPhone 6(?), but with higher resolution.

  • Jonas Bliki

Then add an SD card ?

That is true son, both should receive the same amount of updates too since they have the same hardware

  • Mokhtar Mouhib

    Wait for z4 :D

  • BruceLeeRoyJenkins

Only buyers remorse I would get if I got the Z3, would be if the Z4 has a 64-bit processor, hopefully it does though

  • DBS

Unless they put the “apps to SD card” feature of the T2 in it too, an SD card is useless on a 4.4 device.

  • T.T

Every OEM should start offering 32GB or 64GB for their flagship. No more 16GB please.

  • T.T

You mean higher clocked, not better.

  • T.T

I will be one of those ‘people’.

  • Leddin

hope the z3c will come with the same specs, a 4.5′ display and less brezels

  • RealityCheck2013

    I am happy with my Z1 :D

  • kiikooo

Then please call it Z2 something.

  • Luxsaan06

This is not even the Z3, As Sony Xperia Z3 had passes through the Federal Communications Commission and the particular variant being tested was the D6603. Evleaks leaked Sony Xperia D6653…

    Sony Xperia Z C6603

    Sony Xperia Z1 C6903

    Sony Xperia Z2 D6503

    Sony Xperia Z3 will/have to be D6603 or D6803

I’m sure that the D6653 is not the Sony Xperia Z3 and Sony will not decrease the screen size.

  • Eduardo Otero

Well if you like to show off your brand new Xperia flagship you have to buy a new one every six months which is totally unnecessary

  • Eduardo Otero

Let’s be honest, Sony won’t increase storage

  • wared

WTF Sony, are you making a new smartphone for only 0.2 GHz more?

  • darannechelle

Remember at Mobile Congress no one expect the S801!!!

  • Jonas Bliki

Their are several ways to do that, with or without root. Google is your best friend. ;-)

  • DBS

Except I shouldn’t be forced to go look for workarounds and tricks to manage to do something that Android COULD do prior to 4.4.
Even Windows Phone 8.1 can do that now, for Christ sake!

Sony placed the option back on the T2 Ultra. They should simply expand the feature to all their Xperia devices and be done with it. If Google screws up, that’s when OEMs should come and “add their stuff”.

  • Takashi Fujiwara

i thought it come with 64bit processor. but.. arghh… really?

Muu first xperia was the first one x1 by htc, then few htc phones, last year i bought xperia z on free market, love that phone but what sony is doing with 6 month cycle is insane
Good luck somy u just lost one of really experienced users. So love xperia z but also it was my biggest mistake.

  • Michael Hofmann

    Z2+ would make more sense

  • xperiafan324

Sony really shouldn’t bump the digit up if all these leaks even have the slightest truthfulness to them. They should just name it like Z2′ (read : Zed two Prime, or Zed two Dash), or something similar.

  • Mahinthan So

What was the reason any one moved from Z1 to Z2?
Use your phone until its lag..

Thanks for you all just changing phone before its lag.. There for sony doesn’t intentionally make it lag..

  • DrKrFfXx

I could store 100s of GB of music and video on an SD card.

App to SD? Are you using an Xperia X10 with some 500MB for the user or something? Why the fuck would you need 30GB+ for shitty few megabyte Android apps?

  • Timbo1

I hope these specs change! Throw at least a Snapdragon 805 in it and boost that screen resolution up a notch to make a U.S. $700 price tag easier to swallow!

  • Ray

    So what gives?

  • webusermy

I bought the Z2 the moment it was out. I always wanted a phone with a larger internal memory and if the Z3 came out with 64GB internal, I won’t be mad. Because at the time I needed a phone, the Z2 was the best there is which suits my needs of the time. The only ones who will be potentially mad are those who wants the bragging right of having the newest and latest.

  • webusermy

Because everyone is like you who only installs… using your word.. “shitty few megabytes Android apps”, am I right? I’m sorry, but the world doesn’t involve around your pathetic usage.

Games now are in the hundreds of megabytes by average.. with bigger games taking up a few gigs. XCOM takes up 4 GB.

  • webusermy

Hope this isn’t the case. They have came out with limited 32GB models here and there. T-Mobile & Japan Z1 for example had them.

  • DrKrFfXx

Oh, some hardcome gamer, I knew I come across someone like you replying me back.

I don’t need to have 50 games installed at a time just becase on my Xperia Z Ultra. Oh, I remember, I have none installed. Talk to my Vita, 3DS, PS4, PS3, Gaming GTX 770 mounted PC, and some old consoles.

Pathetic is using a shitty touch interface to play games.

  • Fixery Foex

Maybe it’s just a big version of Z2 coming to the US in September :P Z3 = Z2 US

  • RudzLong

Good job sony, for the worst update Z2 -> Z3(=_=)
i will just wait for 2015 for change my x8O_O/

  • webusermy

50 games? With 16GB, you can’t even have 3 big title games. LOL.

Oh wow.. you have so many devices to bring around and show off. Guess what? I can throw numbers/devices in too which I actually own. My laptop itself is running on a GTX 870M if you want to throw some numbers around and my desktop with a GTX 780. I also have a Vita, 3DS and PS3.

Of course, this is the internet. And depends on what game you play, there are some really good games that are adapted well with the touch interface. LoL. Peace.

  • Abdul Ghani
  • DBS

1 – Out of the box you don’t even get 16GB. You have less than that.

2 – Good games require a ton of GBs.

3 – Some people like to use a lot of apps. And on a phone with a camera like the Z2, imaging apps are a must. Guess what? Good imaging apps also take space.

4 – I’m buying a premium device, paying a premium price, I expect premium features. Plain and simple. The Z line isn’t some cheap Moto G or some Galaxy cr*p. It’s a premium line. The fact that it only comes with 16GB and an OS version that limits you to those 16GB is, in itself, pathetic. Sony is the only OEM that only offers 16GB. No other OEM does that. Even Samedung gives you options.
So no, I don’t f*cking have to be restricted to 16GB just because some people buy high end phones to show off, and Google decided to f*ck users in the arse with KitKat by removing basic OS functionality.

  • DrKrFfXx

I rather play some plataformers. And some ocassional shooters on the PC, alongside RPG for the consoles. And lots and lots of fighters. None of them really doable to an acceptable level of gaming on a touchscreen.

Of course I enjoyed playing Angry Birds on my cell phone when it was all the rage. But it fastly grew old. Touch controls are a no go for me.

But yeah, I get your point. So peace.

  • DrKrFfXx

Premium devices needs to be fast. Installing apps, specially heavy apps like games on an SD card, even on fast expensive SD cards, is not fast. Mounting takes time, reading and writing is usually slower than flash memory installed on any premium phone. So on and so forth.

It is better to install apps on the flash memory, and files on SD. It’s the same SSD to HDD analogy. I won’t store mp3’s on my space limited and expensive but fast SSD, I will do so on my HDD. Every program that I need to perform, call that games, I will install them on the SSD.

  • Pingback: Evleaks ?????????????????????????????? Xperia Z3()

  • Eduardo Otero

On specific models like japanese and US T-Mobile but internationally they only come with those poor 16Gb.
Sad but true and yes I’d like they change that but I don’t believe it happens

  • DBS

Well, then there you have it. 16GB is inadmissible on a premium phone. So, if you insist on putting 16GB of flash memory on the phone, you have, at the very least, to give the users the option of putting the apps on the SD card, even if installing apps there takes more time.
What you can’t (or shouldn’t in this case) have is a 16GB premium phone that doesn’t allow you to actually expand the useful memory even though you have a microSD card. Music and photos are very cute, but I can always store photos and music in the cloud. You know what I can’t store in the cloud (yet)? Apps.

  • CK

well, although i do agree it’s better to have bigger (32GB) internal memory nowadays, but i have to disagree on your comment of “SD card is useless on a 4.4 device”

pictures and video can be stored in SD card. Nowadays pic and videos take up alot of space. and MP3s as well. Also i tend to have backup (using sony’s backup and restore) stored in SD card. having these files in my SD card already eats up half of my 32GB SD card.

So, SD card is NOT useless in 4.4 device.

  • DBS

Ok. Not completely useless. But what I was thinking is: photos and music you can install on the SD card. Sure. You can also save them to the cloud. So, on a 16GB phone you can save space by moving those things to the SD card…or to the cloud.

However, you can’t (yet) save apps to the cloud. If you can’t save them to the SD card either, well then, your card doesn’t really do much to really expand your memory. If you had a 16GB phone with no SD card, you could still move the music and the photos to a cloud service. But you can’t the app. And since 4.4 removed the ability to save the apps to the SD card, it means you can’t move the apps to the SD card NOR to the cloud. And therefore the microSD card becomes “useless” since it’s major advantage is gone.

  • DrKrFfXx

I never claimed I’m OK with only 16GB of storage, make that 12 after formatting and system reserved memory. Hell even my old Xperia S sportted some 32GB of user storage.

I’m just all against apps to SD because it won’t perform as Android as a modern OS should.

    Sorry but I want 128GB

  • Damo Conti

Exactly 810/812 or 815 soc 64bit z3 has 3major flaws not enough of a soc improvement should be 805. 32/64gb storage or make it so a part of the sd card can be remapped to app storage so phone gas 16gb say for every 8gb the sdcard has 1GB is remapped to int memory so you put a 32gb card in int mem becomes 20mb or make it adjustable up to 1/4. So put a 128gb card them int memory could be 48gb nice

  • Freddo

    When will Sony release a 64bit, > 4GB ram phone? that’s my next upgrade…

  • DBS

“Why the fuck would you need 30GB+ for shitty few megabyte Android apps?”

This certainly sounds like you’re ok with it.

Yes, I would also prefer to have 32GB of storage and the microSD card. But if Sony insists on 16GB, then the least they should do is offer the option to move and install the apps on the SD card. Even if you won’t do that, many other will happily do so.

(By the way, if the apps on Android don’t run from a SD card as well as they do from flash memory, that’s Google’s fault. On Windows Phone 8.1 apps installed to the SD card work just as smoothly as they do on the flash memory. So all it takes is for Google to work on it as Microsoft has proven that you don’t have to have a compromised experience just because the app in on the SD card.)

  • Abdullah Robben

    lol that’s a lot :)
let’s get 32/64 GB first and later we will talk about 128GB

  • Abdullah Robben

    but they have to
every manufacturer is doing this like Samshitsong HTC and Apple
My 2 years old Xperia ZL has 16GB of storage and if i want to upgrade to a newer device i want to get a better storage than my old phone

  • Abdullah Robben

The thing is that even my 1.5 years old Xperia ZL has 16GB of storage (and that’s ok with me) but if i want to upgrade to a newer device i want to get a better specs and a better storage than my old phone

  • Eduardo Otero

Yeah, Apple was first, HTC and then Samshitsung but Xperia ones hasn’t followed that road. They seem to be waiting ’till they be on the edge

  • Eduardo Otero

It ain’t. It is useful to record 4K video and storage high quality music to play with noise cancelling

  • Eduardo Otero

Then we find that up to now Xperia wasn’t made for good games although they try to manage Play Station hability

  • lolop

You are chatting so much shit mate. Premium devices don’t just need to be fast they need to do everything expected of the modern smartphone! Speed is important but things like storage space come in very close behind. I’m like you… don’t have a lot of apps but even I can see only having 16gb internal storage is a serious limitation. I have a navigation app with a EUR map pack that takes more than 2 gig!

Your HDD-SDD analogy is completely tragic, are you trying to tell me you can tell the difference between an app installed in internal memory and one installed on a SD card? doubt it.

And are you seriously suggesting every time you access the SD card you need to mount it? it might theoretically be smaller but humans wouldn’t be able to tell a difference.

My shitty cheap SD card from amazon has enough throughput to write 4k to the SD card.

  • Sumo

While Sony still lost in the same stupidest strategy, now LG just…
announced a 165 percent increase in second-quarter net profit compared with the same period last year, reflecting strong earnings from both the TV and mobile operations. LG reported second-quarter 2014 net profit of KRW 412 billion (USD 399.8 million) and operating profit of KRW 606 billion (USD 588.5million), an increase of 26.5 percent year-over-year. Unaudited second quarter consolidated revenues of KRW 15.37 trillion (USD 14.93 billion) increased 7.7 percent from the previous quarter.
The LG Mobile Communications Company shipped a record-high 14.5 million smartphones in the second quarter, a 20 percent increase year-over-year with LTE products accounting for more than one-third of all LG smartphones sold this year. As a result, sales increased 16 percent from the same period last year to KRW 3.62 trillion (USD 3.51 billion), the highest since the first quarter of 2010. The mobile division’s operating profit of KRW 85.9 billion (USD 83.4 million) in the second quarter put an end to three consecutive quarters of losses. Much of the success was due to the initial popularity of the LG G3 in the Korean market and strong sales of L SeriesIII smartphones. LG plans to continue its global rollout of the G3 and introduce more mass tier products in the second half, including variations of the LG G3, such as the recently announced G3 Beat, and additional L Series models.
