New QX30 Lens-Style Camera on the horizon with 30x zoom?

Sony QX30We recently reported that Sony would launch at least one new Lens Style Camera at IFA 2014 in early September. This would follow on from the launch of the DSC-QX10 and DSC-QX100 cameras at last year’s IFA. One of these new models is believed to be the DSC-QX30, following the appearance of a registration on the Korean RRA (National Radio Research Agency) site.

The previous report suggested a lens-style camera with 30x zoom, perhaps this is why the number ’30’ is used in the DSC-QX30 model number. It would be no surprise to see a new lens-style camera from Sony, especially since last year’s models were effectively a new imaging form factor. It shows there was enough success in these models to warrant a new release.

The old lenses topped Amazons sales for a week or something, so it would seem there’s some interest :) Or maybe that was just because it was something people hadn’t seen before.

the new next generation is on the way

If the connection between phone and camera is seemless then it will be a win. Since that was the biggest problem with the previous gen

No. Native RAW on Android is limited to the built-in camera.

However, with these Sony can do anything. They can enable RAW on the QX10 and QX100 with a simple update. Why won’t they?

    1. Files are huge. Usually around 1MB per megapixel.
    2. You need special software to work with them. And that software needs support for that particular camera. There’s Lightroom and a few others, and they’re all expensive and made for professionals.
    3. RAW has very little benefit if you’re not doing serious editing.
    4. RAW doesn’t have all that much extra info on these smaller sensors. You’d be able to tweak the noise reduction and sharpness filters a little, but you’re not going to gain much quality. The difference will only be visible if you start zooming to 100%, which is simply not interesting.
    5. You need to render RAW to JPG before it’s visible and usable outside those specialised pieces of software. OS X and Picasa for example have universal RAW viewers, but they don’t read anything besides RAW sensor data so your images will always look horrible.
    6. Working with RAW on a mobile processor is not viable. Rendering a 16MP RAW image on a recent and powerful laptop takes a good five seconds, at least. I guess you can imagine how long that would take on your average phone.

So, in general, RAW is not interesting. If you really need all the editing features RAW provides you’ll already own a good DSLR or mirrorless camera.

Phones are for snapshots. Not for photography. The QX series are basically snap-on compact cameras and those don’t provide RAW either because it’s simply not interesting.

Nah, if it came with IP certification it would make this bad boy worth dumping last years model. Just imagine all the firepower of a great camera underwater, seeing as how Sony really under delivered with its 20.7 MP’s

I got mine second hand and the new firmware was delivered the next day.

    I was delighted.

The images I can get (with a little hassle..) are so good that I lament taking shots with the z2’s own sensor now.

They’re just too pricey at RRP. I snapped one up on ebay for half price :)

It’s still fairly janky sometimes. I have to close the app and reboot the camera on occasions.

It’s a fun form factor and helps reduce the overall carry-weight when going out with the kids but if it could all load up in half the time, 100% of the time, it’d be even better.
