Xperia Z3 Compact passes through FCC; confirms 4.6-inch display size

in Rumours, Xperia Z3 series

Xperia Z3 Compact FCC_2The Sony Xperia Z3 Compact recently passed through the FCC in two variants: FCC ID PY7PM-0810 and PY7PM-0812. At this stage, we have not seen details that confirm which of these FCC ID numbers correlates with the Xperia Z3 Compact model numbers D5803 (M55w) and D5833.

Interestingly, the FCC documents did reveal the dimensions of the Xperia Z3 Compact. They point to the handset having overall dimensions of 127 x 64.9 mm and a display diagonal of 116 mm (4.57-inches). These numbers tie in exactly with the previous leak we saw on the Xperia Z3 and Z3 Compact dimensions.

Using these figures we can calculate that the Xperia Z3 Compact has the third highest screen to phone size ratio of any Sony Xperia device. The Xperia Z3 Compact’s ratio comes in at 69.85%, marginally ahead of the Xperia Z (69.83%), but behind the Xperia ZL (74.97%) and Xperia T2 Ultra (71.69%).

With specifications expected to be very similar to the Xperia Z3 (Snapdragon 801, 3GB RAM, 16GB storage and 20.7MP camera), this is a device we’re very keen to hear more about as we approach the expected reveal at IFA on 3 September 2014.

    will it be Full HD?!
    that would be awesome

  • Must. Be. Released. in. US. ASAP. No more delays and these region-specific rollouts! This would be the phone for me if I just didn’t buy the Z2 last month :)

  • Fynjy7771

This year Sony definitely moves in right direction (exept midrange devices). Very good!

    It definitely will.

  • DBS

2 things disappoint me: 801 instead of the 805 and more than everything the 16GB. They better have the move to SD card feature of the T2 in it or I’ll once again skip it. 16GB is not nearly good enough.

The display size should have been 4.7′ to directly compete with the iPhone 6.

Z3 still hidden… Show us your front and screensize

  • Danny

a 4.5 inch Z3 Compact is more ideal for me than the 4.3 Z1 Compact. actually not for me per se, but for someone close to me. So a Z3 Compact and a Z2 or Z3 should be ideal phone for me in the next 2 years. but 32GB internal storage is would still be even greater.

  • Danny

from what I read, won’t the upcoming 4.4.4 KitKat support Move to SD card feature?

  • DBS

Only if Sony puts it back it because Google removed that capability on KitKat.

Xperia Z: The best of Sony in a smartphone.
Xperia Z1: The best of Sony is now even better.

Xperia Z2: Details make the DIFFERENCE.

Xperia Z3/Z3 Compact: Details don’t make much of a DIFFERENCE!

I missed z2 compact and c2, where did they go??

  • JYL

I will buy z3 if it comes with features like note 3 such as s pen(or Sony’s highly responsive screen that compatible with a pencil or metallic pen), s memo, pen gestures, split-screen multitasking, Air View.

  • Axcel ctw

but still 16 gb is more than enough for me

  • Naos

And Samsung will sell more because it will have 4.8 inch, iPhone will have 4.7. I think they should go with 4.7. Now it looks they will be the smallest.

And Z3 should be 5.1 and bit narrower and shorter (less bezels!). I own Z2 and would like it to be bit smaller. Maybe I need the compact…

  • Sepehr Estaki

    just a question
    what’s new?!
any new technology from SONY?! or just more megapixels in camera ?
I am a big fan of SONY but SONY was something else before!

What most people don’t seem to get: People in the market for the Compact do NOT!!!!! want a giant screen. So this is absolutely the right way to go. There is no sense in a competition for the biggest “Mini-Phone”.

  • Sean

They didn’t go anywhere, because they were never there.

  • Naos

Yes, I get it. But then for me Z3/Z2 is a bit too big, I would like 4.9. I’m afraid 4.6 will be a bit too small on ther other side. My wife has 5inch Xperia Z and this one is almost perfect.

I think leaving Z3/Z2 to be 5 inch would be better decision than going to 5.2. They maybe should make separate 5.5 model to satisfy people that want BIG. So maybe they should have 3 phones:

    – 4.6 (small bezels)
    – 5.0 (small bezels like on Xperia Z !)
    – 5.5 (whatever, I don’t care)

    I would go for 5.0

  • SK

    U can skip the Z3 then :P

  • Excited for Xperia Z3 Compact. But I’m still happy with my Xperia Z. If it’s thinner than the Xperia Z it would be great.

  • Niels d. G.

To compete? That’s nonsens! Bigger doesn’t necesserily mean better. After all, eventhough smartphones keep getting bigger and bigger on average, the majority of people still prefer more handy 4″ – 4.5″ handsets that fit more nicely in the hand, and are easier to use with one hand.

  • H-R-K

4.6 inch, there is any possibility that it is 1080p.

  • JYL

    So so sad!

Hope sony will bring these features to the flagship phone soon, maybe Z5.. I’ll waiting for that day.

  • DBS

Well and that’s great for you. But Sony doesn’t do phones just for you. They should strive to appease to more consumers. And while 32GB would break the deal for you who just needs 12GB certainly, having 16GB may very well break the deal for those of us who need at least 32GB.

  • jr

Now Samsung launch to alpha series to compete z3c who will win. Based on their specs 32 gb internal battery without micros. And 1850 mah battery only will be their major drawback.

I would rather it be 720p so we can continue enjoying the great battery life that the Z1c enjoyed. But then again I wonder if that is why Z1c has eaten into the share of its bigger brothers.

    I see…it’s quite make sense.

  • Jeff Martinez

Hopefully Sony keeps the 4.6 screen size and DOES NOT INCREASE it for future models. Keep it Compact! I love my Z1 Compact, and a selling point was the size. I’ll skip the Z3 Compact, but a Z4 compact with a 1080p screen at 4.6 would be atomically awesome.

  • Dan Vafidis

yea and if you don’t have the feature, there’s an app for that

  • Dan Vafidis

if you want to kill the battery yes it’s possible, but useless, 720p is enough you won’t see a difference with 1080p

  • Dan Vafidis

they can increase the screen if they put absolutely 0bezels and don’t increase phone size

  • Dan Vafidis

samsung will sell more just because of dumb people thinking samsung is great.
