wpid-wp-1408371586365.jpegAn 8-inch Sony Xperia tablet has been rumoured recently,  with the SGP621 model number recently cropping up.  Well it looks like it is definitely on the way as a reference to the “Xperia Z3 Tablet Compact” has appeared in a recently revised manual for the Sony Bluetooth Speaker BSC10. Look for the new tablet to be formally announced at IFA 2014 on 3 September.

Thanks Ben, Hoa, Henzvid and Jack!

  • Can’t wait IFA :)

  • ???cz

Would be nice a not high end compact tablet (7-8″)

  • Can’t wait IFA

  • P9

    tablet compact # ultra
    logic.. xD

  • Timmy

It means that Xperia Z3 Tablet Compact will be around 6.5 mm thick

  • SopNaw

Maybe, the “Tablet Compact” is a variant/replacement of the “Ultra” name serie which was released with the Z1. If this is the case that name is better and more logical than the old Z Ultra 6.4″ which can be used like a 4″-5″ phone for calling…etc

  • jonyah

Take my money now. This is what I’ve been waiting for. Considering it has the 21 ending, I’d assume it also comes with LTE!!!

  • xzzz

    No Z3 or Z3 compact? ;)

  • Amir

good unified name. nice sony. hope you keep doing what you’re doing better and better. can’t wait for ifa announcements.

  • Snajdarn

Just beef up the resolution please; we need an upgrade from 1920*1200…

  • Ankith Rai

    tablet compact < ultra

    Should be a 8,9″ Display with 2560 × 1600 (WQXGA) Resolution.

  • Vuyo Ncube

I’m not sure how I feel about it. On one hand, their 2014 smartphones, thin or thick, have been battery life beasts. The Z2 Tablet not so much.

  • Rifqi Al Fariz

    Man, zl2.. Would be awesome.

  • jonyah

1920×1200 or even x1080 would be enough for me at 8″. I’d rather a couple extra hours of battery life than pixels I can’t even see.

  • BruceLeeRoyJenkins

Don’t forget the resolution hasn’t been as highly speced as other tablets, but still a great offering. Hopefully the Z3 Tablet will have a better resolution and battery life with the same great design, and great front firing speakers.

  • MDizz

i hope they reduce the bezel on the long side of the device

  • shortb

    i think there’s already a zl2 or was that a z2l?

but it does not have the same design language as the zl
bigger than the zl but with the same 5″ screen

  • It’s interesting that the Xperia Z3 is not there!

I really don’t want to see them, but I do – so I actually need a higher resolution (I mostly read books on my tablet). If the tradeoff is less batterylife, so be it.

It would also be nice with a less reflective screen; reading outdoors is more or less like looking yourself in a mirror.

  • Vuyo Ncube

I think 1920 x 1200p on an 8 inch is OK. Lower price, higher power, better battery life and brightness (unless it has a better WhiteMagic UHD panel from JDI)

  • EPGuest

Please don’t call it the Z3 Sony :(

Good idea Sony. I like compact devices.

  • Abdel

Nice thing Sony. For now I’ll stay at 6.44.

  • Sachin

My Z1 Compact touch screen got cracked, only a hair line crack, what should i do, sorry for offtopic but i am in panic situation

Didn’t they announced that they wouldn’t be making a 7 inch tablet? At least this is 8 inches. Hope this one has a good resolution and PPI.

  • jonyah

I don’t get why people try to read a book on a tablet. Read a chapter on eInk and you’ll never go back. That’s definitely a case for having more than one device. I know it’s convenient to be able to read on a tablet, but I just can’t do it more than 5-10 minutes.

I don’t think there will ever be a tablet with a screen that’s capable of being read outside in the sun.

  • Hamed Azizi

Tablet Compact? “Z3 Phablet” could be a better name.

  • It isn’t actually a deal breaker, an advantage with a lower resolution panel is that it gives better performance. :)

  • like what I’ve said in other post like this, shove a K1 in it, or an 805.. anything lower than that would be a deal breaker.

  • BruceLeeRoyJenkins

I was referring to the Z2 and Z3 Tablet, better resolution is important for something that is pretty much for entertainment purposes only. Plus, as is, the Z2 is better than most tablets avaliable, but a better resolution screen will put it way over everything else.

  • BruceLeeRoyJenkins

For an 8 inch it’s definitely a good thing, but I was referring to the regular tablets Sony offers. On a side note, I’m a little sad Sony won’t be releasing a successor to the Ultra, or that their isn’t any high end phablet offering. However, from what I heard about the T2 Ultra, it’s a great phablet and more than worthy to carry the “Ultra” name

Dunno.. But there’s no official relase about Zl2.. Maybe it would be cheaper version of z3, just like original z and “his” brother, zl.

Actually waiting for z3. I just wish z3 have 32gb onboard storage..

Waiting for a 8″ tablet from Sony for soooooooo long! Come and take my money!

  • xperiax10.awesome

PRICE will decide next tablet’s future, with NVIDIA Shield at 299 USD and Google’s upcoming 8′ offering it will be very difficult for Sony to sell Tablet Z3 !!
And I know Sony will keep the prices very high !!

    Eat a poo

  • Snajdarn

Well, then I should also bring my Cowon mp3-player, which has better sound quality, and my laptop, because browsing is better on a pc, and a portable game console, because it’s made for gaming, and a lot of comics, because they’re better in print than on a tablet, etc etc.

I prefer to bring one device.

I hope this is true. It would be nice to see Sony expand their tablet portfolio.

  • I don’t feel resolution on my Z2 tablet is too low. Of course it could be better, especially when looking close at it but after all I prefer better performance. Let them switch to 64-bit ARM with 50% faster graphics and then we can start talking about UHD. For now they better fix touch issues.

  • Do you really think they will show all (Z3, Z3 Compact, Z3 Tablet, Z3 Tablet Compact) during one single IFA event? What they will do at CES in January then?

  • BruceLeeRoyJenkins

I like all of that but the UHD, unless Sony can fit in a much larger battery and has a much better improved battery optimization than what they already have. I rather have a better 1080p screen for now until more things take advantage of a 4K resolution
