Sony’s SmartWatch 3 to run Android Wear? Plus ‘SmartBand Talk’ on the horizon

SmartWatch 3_ThumbSome new details on Sony’s new SmartWear accessories have been rumoured by 9to5Google. They claim that Sony will launch two new wearable accessories at IFA 2014 next week, including the SmartWatch 3 and a SmartBand Talk, which will sport a curved E Ink display.

The SmartWatch 3 will run Android Wear according to the report, which if true, would mean Sony ditching its current Android-based efforts in this space. This would be a shame, but perhaps inevitable given the challenge of drumming developer interest into niche apps. The watch will take design cues from the Samsung Gear 2 Neo and will feature a 1.68-inch (320 x 320) display and will come with IP58 certification.

The SmartBand Talk, will be the successor to the SmartBand SWR10 and feature a curved E Ink display. Not much else is known at this point, but judging by the name it may feature a mic to make/take calls, or it may have a speaker for voice notifications.

9to5Google includes pictures of both accessories, although we don’t know if these are of the official products or whether they were produced by 9to5Google. The pictures are labelled “Renderings of Sony’s new SmartWatch 3 and SmartBand Talk”, which doesn’t give much colour either way. Less than a week to wait for official details as the IFA 2014 countdown ticks ever closer.

As long as it will still be a perfect Xperia companion, then any OS or design is fine. :)

  • SopNaw

Oh no… If the next SMW is like In the pictures, in term of design I personnaly prefer the old SMW2 with the touch of omnibalance square design.

  • Feanor

Super disappointed by the design of both the Z3 and the next smartwatch. I’ll stick to my smartwatch 2 and I may get the Z2 dead cheap once the Z3 comes out. But sure, still disappointed.
Particularly this smartwatch cannot compete with the Motorola Motor 360 or even the LG Get Watch R.

  • ReaxioN

and so where is my sp kitkat update ? :)

  • Feanor

Any OS, sure, I understand. But any design?? It’s a wearable, design is even more important than it is for a smartphone. Sony did very bad choice there. I was afraid that once they moved design from Sweden to Japan, there would be problems, and now I’m being justified.

  • User2080

if that smartwatch is real, it’s a BIG BIG BIG disappointment. why follow samsung’s gear design? pathetic! spells the difference between sony and LG. LG immediately came up with a cool design after their first pathetic attempt although that circular display does not really result in efficiency. design-wise, LG won the smartwatch competition.

  • Feanor

Autocorrect mistakes: Moto 360 and G Watch R

  • User2080

you can actually edit your post. there’s the EDIT button beside REPLY and SHARE

  • Feanor

I know. But I can’t find it on Android Chrome. I’m outdoors typing from my Z1 C.

  • Feanor

Exactly. As if the Galaxy Gear was good looking at the first place?
What is Sony playing with? Ditching Omnibalance for the Z3 and copying ugly Gear for the Smartwatch.

  • Michael Hofmann

interesting to see what looks like lifelog running on the smartwatch 3, something that’s missing from the smartwatch 2. Whilst the design isn’t great, if the battery life is as good as the smartwatch 2 then it will have a definite advantage over other android wear products.

  • Feanor

Exactly. It’s the reason why the Smartwatch 2 is the best smartwatch, even though it got a fraction of popularity in comparison to Gear watches and Android Wear watches.
But sorry, with this design, I’ll prefer to go through the pain of charging daily an LG G watch R and running the danger of giving up the spirit by midday, rather than having this Smartwatch 3 on my wrist and being laughed at.

  • srsjustfkoff

Seriously just go away. I come to comments to see genuine opinions not you sp update whinging whores all the time.

  • Arthur Simon

No please. I want a classy looking watch with anything else but Android Wear!

  • ProWeirdo

Will its software be full of bugs and defective screens too? Just like the smartphones?

  • ReaxioN

this is just kidding. and now u go away SERIOUSLY ..

  • mustafa

I seem to be the only o e who prefers this design to the sw2.
    Source – I have the sw2

  • mustafa

I seem to be the only one who prefers this design to the sw2.
    Source – I have the sw2

  • g

Oh didn’t notice you were trolling

  • Dan Vafidis

I do like SW3 more too, you should take it as a Sports watch, connected with lifelog app, it’s really great, if you want a classy watch you can still get Moto 360, or maybe the will make a classy watch too. I also prefere Z3 design over Z2

  • Vincent

Is sony still support W8?still waiting for kitkat..maybe android L..

  • Tech Gospel

That. Is. So. Fugly. Looks like the galaxy gear

  • xperiaDROID

The Smartwatch 2 was already a fail because of the price, it’s priced higher then it’s competitors. But it looks good though.
Sony really need to be careful with their Smartwatch 3, they need to price it right and surprise us with a good design, the picture above looks kinda like Samsung Gear Live and LG G Watch which looks boring. With the Asus Zenwatch, LG G Watch R and Moto 360 around the corner, Sony should really be careful.

  • xperiaDROID

Please don’t talk about the Z3, I don’t want to look at that ugly leak picture of it again. But I really hope that the Z3 will be totally different from the leak pictures.

  • xperiaDROID

The more you whine, the more it shows that how stupid you are. This is not an official Sony blog website.
Your SP will get nothing! Nothing I say! NOTHING! NO KITKAT FOR YOU!

  • In the pictures it seems a white version of what we already seen.
However, i will wait for the Sony press-conference :)

  • the_black_dragon

    Android Wear?????
If it comes with this nasty Battery-draining OS where a Smartwatch Battery just keeps one day then forget it. Then I will buy a New SW2 after I lost mine 2 Weeks ago.

  • wared

Guys what is the difference between OLED and AMOLED display? Which one is better? And why?

  • it better run Android Wear

  • jokensy

Fuck the smartwatch! We should be more concerned about the ugly looking Z3 (especially in white), which will make the competitors and sony haters laugh to death when it comes out…

  • Dexter Moregan

because the comment like this come to every topics. That’s why some of us take it seriously. Nuisance!

  • Dan Vafidis

Why follow galaxy gear design ? because samsung sells 70% of all smartwatches maybe ?

  • Dan Vafidis

I actually like Z3 design, it’s a matter of taste, because you don’t like doesn’t mean no one likes it.

  • Dan Vafidis

I liked Z3 Z3 Compact and Z3compact tablet design, I also like the SW3 for sports wear, but I prefere Moto360 for classic watch

  • josesl16

I will just hope that the real thing comes out much, much better than this.

  • Tjaldid

It isn’t ugly it looks better then the Z2 but the problem is that there is no spec change, they need to pull a rabbit to save it or charge $399 for it

  • Tjaldid
  • yes

i hope this is not true , its abig dissapointment ., i love the gear s so much, but the price is to much to wear on a arm . only 8h of a day .i like the look on the z3, z3/z2c and the tablet , i have test them all, but hope sony made us happy and all this looks is not true and the specs ,and surprise us the 3 of sep i berlin :) we will se,

  • GregLu

I agree with you ! The new one seems like a toy :/

For the Talk however, it would be interesting to see it in real picture whats the improvements versus the SWR10 !

  • GregLu

They sells a lot of Gear because they are doing a lot of promotion and cashback (specially in Europe). The Gear S is, on other hand, very seductive !

Hope they don’t use Wear and keep their system. With a little bit more support for apps and features :)

yes but the white in rumour pics is not z3 , its not have the same look at all, if u see right at the pics, i know i have test it but not the white but the white is not the same z3 as the black:P, only hope there is much changes in specs , or a little on the design m, overall good phone, :) ant this time it will come a white all around flagship, i can only hope so anyway, thanx

on the contrary, that’s precisely the reason why they shouldn’t follow the galaxy design. because they will suffer from the comparison. sony products are durable but they lack the gimmicks that attract customers. samsung is an expert on that aspect.

what they need to do is to distinguish their products. they need to offer something different.

look at LG. since offering the highly compact LG G2, they finally started growing. with the LG G3, they made a breakthrough of 10 million for one model. sony made great progress by offering a waterproof flagship (albeit with an ugly display) but they were stuck on the waterproofing.

and what did sony do? they copied apple and samsung’s methods of releasing something similar as an “update” product with every release only offering marginal changes. now look at their sales.

i appreciate sony’s effort in putting bigger batteries on their devices but the same old boring design for three releases is already unforgivable. add to that their failure to bring their products out on time.

bottom line: they have no right to copy other companies’ strategies and designs when they can’t offer something better.

  • Arthur Simon

Ahhh. That is so classy. :)
Ok I agree that those front buttons don’t look good, but who said they’d have to keep them? I want a beautiful premium watch and not a cheap looking plastic made Crapsung copy watch. Since when has SONY, the company with AMAZING design, copied from SAMSUNG?

Please stop dancing around the subject!

  • SopNaw

For you, yes. For me not. After all, It’s my personnal advice, I find this design (SMW2) very square, very clean with builded premium material which give a other style of what Sony can do in all other Smartwatch of others brands with the omnibalance design (Phone also). But we must wait the IFA for clearly compare the two models and say what is better in design.

  • Clever Fanboy

Why Sony fanboys always dodge questions and dance around the real subject?
C’mon, Galaxy gear is fucking ugly, there’s no reason to follow the shitsung!

Sony is clearly a losser this round

  • zymo

I’m not too much into smartwatches, but If I had to choose I would get one NOT running Android Wear. As long as it needs to be permanently online (unlike pebble) and connected to google services I won’t buy it. Android Wear is still beta.

  • UnmeBalance

What do you guys think OmniBalance is? Glass back?, metal frame with 2 colors? Flat sides? Z3 has omnibalance, M too has it, SP, L all have it. It’s just even weight distribution and conveniently placed buttons.

  • drums

SGS phones sell more too so next time sony should come up with a faux fur back with panther pattern on the back of a Z4. At least they should have made the corners sharp to follow their own design. OMG the day Sony takes design from Samsung has come, ew I can’t even process it. I need 32 cores with huge.big.medium.little architecture.

Omnibalance according to Sony words was symmetry in all directions, a catchphrase to describe the symmetrical placement of transparent materials around all sides of the Xperia Z. This was changed with the Z Ultra, Z1 etc. to a metal frame that still carried on stylistically the frame principle of the Z (though not symmetrical in materials anymore).
The Z3 will have only a plain metal frame with round section and no symmetry all around. It cannot be described as Omnibalance, unless if Sony keeps the catchphrase for marketing reasons.

  • BruceLeeRoyJenkins

I honestly don’t understand how they can make a Smartband 2 when the first iteration was pretty much just released and hasn’t had a lot of support or any real use. I mean I have one and its a cool Sony accessory, but that’s about it

  • Dan Vafidis

It’ doesnt look likea SG Gear, it looks like any other sports watch

  • Dan Vafidis

it’s not a bad choice if it’s a sports watch

  • I´d love to have a smart brand but i can´t with my Xperia S ehehe (i’m waiting for the release of the Z3 so the price of Z2 drops) but a lot of people don´t buy the smart brand because Sony don´t use some important sensores…

  • BruceLeeRoyJenkins

The smartband is good at what it says it’ll do, and that’s good, but it doesn’t do a whole lot. For me I knew what I was getting and I’m happy with how my smartband turned out. What pisses me off is how Sony said the Core would be the brains and the center of their wearable devices and it hasn’t really done any of that.

  • With the LifeLog app can you share your activities? And in some promos we saw that the smarbrand tell us how many hours we spent on watching movies (i guess). How does that work?

  • BruceLeeRoyJenkins

I don’t know about sharing it with friends, but most of the watching movies, listening to music, texting and messaging friends, calling, and where you go can be tracked with your phone on the LifeLog app. Mainly the smartband tracks movements, running, walking, cycling, and sleeping

  • But smartband has no sensors to know that you are watching a movie … unless it access to information from other apps that you use to ckeck-in in a movie or tv program, for example.

  • LG

ugly as hell, Omg I can’t believe my eyes
Moto 360 or Lg G watch R still look much better than this!

    R.i.p Sony, #SonyIsGone

  • Ethan ‘blaze’ Parker

    Troll

  • Sh’ Dynasty

I’m a little disappointed with what I’ve seen from the leaks above, but can’t wait to see what Sony has put into them. Design wise the watch can be a step back towards Samsung or a step forward to competing against the Moto 360. As for the Smartband, it seems like sony hyped up there Core for nothing. Design wise it looks good, it’s like a ID Bracelet

  • LG

LG is much better than sony

  • Putty Tang

That info is tracked by the phone itself with the Lifelog app. It only tracks tablet and cellphone activities, not what you watch on tv or in a movie theatre

I call fake, design just doesn’t fit in with the rest of the ‘3’ leaks. And the last Sony would want is to copy Samsung’s design.
