Xperia Z3 home launcher (7.0.A.0.14) ported to older Xperia handsets

by XB on 6th September 2014

in Tips & Tricks, Xperia Z3 series

Xperia Z3 Home Launcher_1Sony’s new home launcher for the Xperia Z3 sticks much more closely to Google’s stock launcher, than compared to the current version. You’ll immediately notice larger app icons, overall the launcher looks very similar to the Google Now Launcher. The Xperia Z3 home launcher has now been ported to older Xperia hardware running Android 4.2+ thanks to Sahaab from XDA.

If you want to try it for yourself, then the download links are below. There are two versions, the first should work on non-rooted handsets but may not fully support stock widgets, transparent system UI and navbar for older Android versions. The second should fully work but you will need to be rooted. Install like a normal APK, although make sure you wipe home data first.

  • Dakota

Would definitely download, were it not for the lack of transparency.

  • rs guest

    Yay !!!
But the bigger icons are not upto my liking :(

  • Paopee

just checked it out. FOR ME, i like the old Xperia Home instead of this. icons are huge in the drawer.

  • NoWay

I think it has transparency only on KitKat, on screenshot seems to be 4.3 Jelly Bean.

  • Vadim Katznelson

So…anyone with nonrooted xperia z1 /c/s/z2 on 4.4.4 installed it yet? Does it have transparency or not?

  • Mohammad Mansour

    But the icons are big

  • aman

    horrible is the word

  • Dakota

I can confirm that it’s still transparent if you have 4.4
Icons aren’t hi-res, they just don’t look nice when they’re huge
ALSO it doesn’t replace the original Home apk, you can switch between both launchers

  • David Hvatov

I like small icons more, than these huge ones.

  • Luca

Help guys, i cant install the superuser version. I wiped the home data

  • baloosh

Anyone checked it on xperia z ultra how thr icons are? (non rooted)

  • Mahmoud Yosri

I have rooted xperia z . how to download the superuser apk ?? Could anyone tell me

  • Luca

    Update: It sucks!

  • adi

Do you have to install it separately with the links give above or will there be an update which will release later on?

  • Jerry Berglund

I really enjoy this new launcher, except the removal of the trashbin animation. I do miss that one. The X isnt that nice.

  • Amit Kataria

Icons are so big…the only reason i uninstalled google now launcher…n i would prefer my old xperia home.

  • ishu

anyone installed it on Xperia Z2 ??

  • Mike N.

Thanks for this. The icons are indeed HUGE. No root and a locked bootloader Z2 with transparent nav and status bar. The trash can is an X and those subtle animations you get when deleting an icon or widget is gone as well. Search bar is permanant to. So this ones a pass for me. App drawer icon looks better tho..

  • Mike N.

Yeah. Transparent nav and status. Seems to be running smoothly. Limited widget support tho like other 3rd party launchers.

  • ishu

anyone got this update in India?

  • Bob

U have to flash the superuser zip through ur custom recovery

  • jacob

not bad. but I still love dodol launcher more than this.

  • Sergio

    Can’t open the file :S

  • Renanda

I’ve installed it on my XZU but the icons are still small

  • Reza

I just installed and then uninstall on my XZ, preferred the old Xperia home than this one, the icon look so big and I think it’s not fit the screen.

  • Lukáš Pávl

On Z Ultra causing some sirious problems or not working at all. For example when i want to install app from SD card, the instalation end with message saying that the memory is full. And of course it’s ugly.

  • János Jenei

The Sony Xperia E1 has the same amount of internal memory of the Sony Xperia Sony Xperia M and M Model C2004 has a dual processor and lower RAM and only 512 will receive the version 4.4 kit kat. Please listen to us users the Sony Xperia Sony dual model C2004 M and M Xperias generally give us the upgrade to Android 4.4 kat kit that automatically gives us the option to move apps to the SD card as the internal memory of Xperia M is very low as well as the Sony Xperia E1 then listen to us and give us the Kit Kat version 4.4 for Sony Xperia M dual model C2004. Thank you!

  • Confused Panda

Less the playstation styled back home and menu buttons designs, what other changes are there?

  • Abu Saleq Rocky

Fail!! Can’t use any of default widget. Like clock, weather, pictures etc

  • Hassandroid

I downloaded Google now launcher and then uninstalled it because the icons were big, and now Sony comes with this :(

  • Camilo Uribe

Icons are so big, naah ! Can someone send me the lastest home launcher 17.1.2.A.0.314 . Thanks

  • XperiaV

it has a layout bugs. Need someone to make a better port for 4.3 users.

  • Guest

I think it looks great on my Xperia Z! :)

  • Jiyeon90

Wtf is this crap Sony?! That looks horrible
Why not make something like this

  • roeshak

Don’t understand why so many dislike the larger icons. I prefer them, really showcase the high res display. Just a pity you have to be rooted to use this with the stock widgets. I’m tempted to root but think I’ll just wait for the official 4.4.4 update for z2

  • Tjaldid

Someone went blind over at sony and demanded bigger logos

  • FredrikAn

Looks like the size as on iPhone.

  • GHJ

    Whine, whine, whine.

  • Börcs Barnabás

It works fine in my Z. Thanks! :)

  • Stanley08

Fixed icons here! :) It’s awesome, I also have the SystemUI, Walkman, Keyboard, Update center, Widgets, AR fun. All on my Z2, So I have a Z3. Well.. ish!

  • Sahaab Zahid

umm if you are going to use my stuff, please add link to xda thread or atleast add my name

  • Alif Zack

Yo, why the reupload? im posting as behalf of the porter as he’s my friend.

    Atleast add the credits

  • Sahaab Zahid

UPDATES HAVE BEEN CANCELLED FOR THIS PORT DUE TO THIS POST

  • Jack

You do realize that they posted your XDA link, don’t you? Look up again.
I understand that this is your work but by removing the download link, it’s hard for some of us to download your work.

  • raheemdot

How did you bypass this issue? I cannot install the app due to this issue.

  • Sahaab Zahid

brother, that small little XDA thing doesnt work, i have in my signature specifically that sharing of my work isnt allowed

  • Sahaab Zahid

also secondly sorry for the inconvenience but i porting is not easy work, i dont want them to add their own download link :p

  • Jack

I guess I will just wait for this to resolve. Your work is pretty good anyway. :)

Maybe email Xperiablog to erase their mediafire download link? I really wanted to test your new clock widget. :P

  • Sahaab Zahid

clock widget had been added for like 5 hours now,
    well removed for now

  • Jack

I just woke up. It’s morning here. :/

And I just saw that you might not update the port again. I don’t see how that will make Xperiablog do something about it honestly.

  • Sahaab Zahid

ya i doubt it will too but atleast i wont have to work my a*s off
secondly, i can send u the widget if you give me a way to contact you (e.g XDA acc)

  • Jack

I understand. Well maybe tweet them on Twitter? They usually listen, just saying.

I would love too! But unfortunately no, I usually learn everything on XDA (rooting and custom roms) without an account as I don’t like asking.
    Maybe an email?

  • Sahaab Zahid

sure email would be easier, but i thought since u wudnt want to publicly release it here :D

  • Guest

My Xperia ZR with the latest home launcher

  • Jack

    Jackmerson7@live.com

That would be very hepful for me. I wonder if you also updated your home launcher or not? I only have an old version of your launcher.

And no, I won’t make a download link for others or share it privately. It’s a promise. :P

  • Killian Khoo

Just installed on my Xperia ZR KK ~
    Look nice ~

if this video Z3 low-light video is true ~
    it look really nice ~

  • Hey there. Everybody appreciates your work and original posts at XDA. You also gave proper explanations there about what was bugging you – still I think you’re over reacting. Imagine how the Sony devs feel about your work? are u giving them credits too? no u don’t – still they are not bitching about it. Xperiablog serves as a great hub, they post quality stuff like your xda thread – all of us experienced readers check out the source link, we all know xperiablog is not creating much of their own content. Don’t worry that they take credit for your work, none of us sees it that way. Actually by promoting the xperia brand tirelessly, they also promote the superb work by great xperia fans like yourself.

  • Sahaab Zahid

    Sony workers get paid ;)
    I don’t, if i did, i wudnt care
Im fine with what they did to the post now
Secondly, try working a whole day on smali and see how much it messes up your brain XD
Sorry if i seem rude, i do not intend to be

  • roeshak

I just don’t understand the hatred of the large icons. I love them. Why do you want to go back to icons scaled for much lower resolution screens

  • roeshak

Z2 was already performing that well anyway.

  • roeshak

You can remove the search bar if you don’t want it. Google settings or long press on the bar itself

  • Luca

I installed the non-root version and it worked, the rooted one didnt work (even though i rooted my phone)

  • bishon bishon

this is the exact copy of the google now launcher, it looks ok, exactly like nexus devices!

  • SM

I’d rather prefer the present one over this crappy one.

  • Killian Khoo

    nice tips ~
The whole home screen look more clear ~
Thank for the tips btw ~

  • Diego

    Hi, installed on Z1 4.4.4 no-root … OK!!

  • Killian Khoo

actually 4.4.2 on my Xperia ZR alrdy have transparency ~

  • Unjealous fuck

Not as well as the Z3 ;P

  • roeshak

    http://www.phonearena.com/news/Sony-Xperia-Z3-full-resolution-photo-samples-have-arrived_id60335

20.7mp samples from z3. Looking good. Focus seems much improved. Good clarity, detail and sharpness. Colour reproduction looks awesome also. Really hope these improvements are software related and not partly down to the new lens.
Looks like Sony’s finally getting the 20.7mp sensor to performing to something approaching is full potential at last!

  • Abdul Ghani

this is huawei ascend mate 7 vs z3 compact its 13mp vs 20.7

    http://blog.gsmarena.com/sony-xperia-z3-compact-hands/

    http://blog.gsmarena.com/huawei-ascend-mate7-video-hands-camera-samples/

my opinion is z3 compact got beaten with still high level of noise plus hdr is extremely poor in z3 compact vs ascend mate 7

I have a z2 with root and wanting to install the root version. Can someone please explain how I would install it as just clicking to install doesn’t install the .apk

  • Peter

Because they don’t look good and as much as you love them – we hate them. There should be an option to at least retain the old size. Don’t be self-centered.

  • roeshak

I was just surprised to see so much dislike for them. I’ve been waiting for Sony to do exactly this. I suppose there’ll always be modded apks to install with small icons.

  • roeshak

From the full resolution samples posted on phonearenna, there’s a significant improvement in clarity and sharpness. Video also looks a bit better but not by much.
Hope the z2 also gets a camera update to improve sharpness and clarity at full resolution.

  • thoughts

    Clock no root doesnt work

  • ash

I hate bigger icons too. they should be proportionate to the screen

  • thoughts

  • If it says “you need to be rooted”, it means you need to copy the APK file over to /system/app, not install it like a regular package.

  • Tomáš Marcin?in

Can u tell me icon pack name ?

  • Jiyeon90

    I believe it’s Cyrcle
