Xperia Z3 new software_3The Sony Xperia Z3 series includes a number of new software features, over and above those found in the current Xperia Z2 flagship. Sony has detailed what these are as well as releasing a short video covering a few of them. There are some nice inclusions such as the ability to pause video whilst recording and smart screen rotation. Check out the full list below.

New software features in the Xperia Z3 series

Pause when recording video

This is a really neat function. You are now able to pause whilst capturing video, when you resume and have finished shooting, all of the clips are stored under one file. It’s hard to believe why such a useful feature hasn’t been implemented before.

Ultra STAMINA mode

Sony has already spoken about new optimisations in the Xperia Z3 and Xperia Z3 Compact that enable a 2 day battery life. A new feature called Ultra STAMINA Mode can make the phone last nearly a week according to Sony. Ultra STAMINA Mode limits a number of phone functions, although we don’t know how much is switched off at this time.

Xperia Z3 new software_2

Unlock the phone automatically with any Sony Bluetooth accessory

The Sony Xperia Z3 series can now be automatically unlocked when any Sony Bluetooth accessory/headset is in close proximity. This is activated in Settings > Security > Screen lock > Bluetooth unlock.

Xperia Z3 new software_1

Record your on-screen activity

The screenshot capture has been around for a while, but now Sony has enabled you to actually record video of what you are doing on-screen. This is enabled by long pressing the power button and selecting “Record Screen”.

Smart screen rotation

So you’re browsing the web on your phone and decide to lie down on the sofa and due to the angle of the phone, the screen orientation changes. We’ve all been there and can be incredible frustrating. Sony’s new “Smart screen rotation” feature prevents this kind of unwanted rotation.

Edit Quick Settings faster

“Quick Settings” in the drop-down menu can now be edited quicker, allowing you to drag and drop the settings you want directly into the tray. You can also long press each setting to load into the full Settings app.

Xperia Z3 new software_3

Optimise audio settings for Sony headphones

The sound settings in the Xperia Z3 series allow you to specifically select the Sony headphone you are using, including optimised sound for that device. This can be found in Settings > Sound > Audio Settings > Headphones.

New Update Center app

Xperia Z3 new software_4

Gestures including tap to wake display

Okay these are not new, the Xperia Z2 already features these gestures, but we’ve had many people ask whether they have carried over to the Xperia Z3 series. The answer is yes, the Xperia Z3 series includes the following:

– Double-tap to wake screen
– Smart call handling (bring phone to ear to answer; turn phone on face to silent incoming call)
– Smart backlight control (screen remains on when you are looking at a photo without touching the screen)

Wonder if these will come to the Z2 with the 4.4.4 update?

  • Constantine

Must. Almost same parts, there is nothing difficult.

  • DBS

What about the most important of all: Moving apps and games to the microSD card?

  • Coolkid

What a beautiful piece of art.. Wanna trade my Z1 for this….!!!

  • Nigel Dickens

I’d guess with a 16Gb internal memory it won’t happen. They only seem to have included it on the low or mid range models

  • Cris de Oliveira

    Very nice!

  • Nigel Dickens

I’m hoping its that way to. But it’ll probably be a while after the z3 launches so as not to cannibalise sales of the z3

  • Faisal Armand

I have Z2, not planning to upgrade to Z3 because of its nearly identical specs.

But there are some features that got me drooling:

    – DSEE HX Hi-Res Audio: It is perfect in android environment where it’s hard to get musics with bitrate of 320kbps. With this feature, I can download a music with a bitrate of 128kbps then DSEE HX with upscale it or so. Plus, I’m an audiophile who listen to music all day long

    – PS4 Remote play: I have ps4 but unfortunately the TV is on living room and it somewhat bugs me when my family wants to watch TV and I have to stop playing. Remote play is perfect for this kind of situation

-Steadyshot with Intelligent Active Mode: The new video stabilization. From the demo video it sounds really promising. I mean the Z2 itself is untouchable when it comes to video stabilization and not even phones with OIS can beat it.

Sony has trimmed down the battery by 100mah but they claimed that its battery life is better than Z2 which is already a 5 star performer already. Then there is new stamina mode which sony claimed can make the phone last for a week. But I guess I’ll wait for the official review for that matter

Oh as for the camera.. The quality is definitely improved over the Z2, and if I look into the images.. It doesn’t like the usual sony who process the images. It’s more like apple/nokia style processing. But I am satisfied enough with the image quality of my Z2.

Checkout my Z2 photostream on flickr by the way XD

  • xperiaDROID

This isn’t fair, Sony should’ve at least include some of the new software features on the Android 4.4.4 update for other phones, I really want the screen recorder.

  • The Screen Recorder sounds pretty interesting! No root, no custom ROMs, just go to the power menu :D

  • Kunorishi

If Sony uses Amoled display then it can really help more like Samsung make the display black and white. In that way, it can use less power for the display as well with the ultra stamina mode

  • Faisal Armand

Can the DSEE HX be installed to Z2? I am drooling for that feature :(

  • Constantine

Agree, I think so too. Or maybe we’ll get LMP directly.

  • Dan Vafidis

    Amoled is shit

  • imparanoic

I wonder if it has ps3 dual shock controller support, ps4 controller are pricey and at the moment, not many people have ps4, ideal for emulators of has both, even better if it has vibration mode

  • wei147

Waiting xda port into for older z series :p

  • Nigel Dickens

As that could be march next year. I’d guess we would get 4.4.4 before then. So at least all the z series phones are on the same software number

  • Alex_rac

I’m very interested into the update center app picture….

it show firmaware update version 17.1.2.A.0.183 available
TAKE A LOOK AT THE CHANGELOG

I’m an Xperia Z2 owner and my firmware version is 17.1.2.A.0.314

    what i mean is:

probably this was the original update made for Xperia Z2 but to provide a fresh look to the Z3 series they dismiss the release and gave us the 17.1.2.A.0.314 with old look instead :/

  • BCHILD

Anybody notice that there are 4 different Xperia Z3 models in the video? I was under the impression that there were three.(Z3, Z3 Compact, and Z3 Compact Tablet)

  • A.o.D

The second from the left is the xperia E3

  • Constantine

No, why march) LMP is almost ready, I think it will be presented on monday, at google conference. And will land on Sony in late october or in november.

  • Vuyo Ncube

While not deal breaking, multi window based on small apps would have been nice. Is the international version 16gb only?

  • taragibson90

now you can get information behind phone number at http://www.phonedetectivetech.com

  • Killian Khoo

They wont use AMOLED, AMOLED is Samsung’s research ~
They probably will use JOLED’s research on their phone in future to replace current ips~
But probably wont so soon ~

  • Killian Khoo

I feel Sony starting to update the overall UI ~
Probably getting ready for the Android L with complete overhaul UI on Xperia ~

  • Jaissal S

I’m still loving my Xperia Z1 after almost a year! I just hope we get an update like the Z3 has. I’ll be interested in the Z4 me thinks :-D

  • zymo

Recent rumors say that along with Android 5/L Sony will introduce an entirely new UI (“flat design”). Probably first to be seen at CES/MWC running on Z4.

  • zymo

Yes, but T-mobile USA gets 32GB version of the Z3. International version only 16GB.

  • Nigel Dickens

I was using March as a guess based on when the z1 got KitKat.

The android tech sites think that LMP won’t be here till late October and Sony has never been prompt with the updates for new versions of android

  • Barend Stapelberg

Cannot WAIT for the Bluetooth unlocking when it comes to the Z2!!!

  • bao trung giang

Like you, i really hope that z1 can get those new features like z3

  • lee jun-hoe

Just to let you know about the DSEE:
    1. It’s software processing to make the music sound “brighter”. If you’re listening to 128 kbps music, it will sound brighter but it won’t compare to an actual copy at 320 kbps (with DSEE) or FLAC.

I don’t agree that in android environment it’s hard to get music at 320 kbps. Google Music offers downloads at 320 kbps MP3, so does 7 digital. Even Amazon offers 256 kbps VBR MP3. Plus you could always just rip directly from CD at 320 kbps
Personally I would think twice about calling yourself an “audiophile”. ;)

    2. DSEE HX is battery-draining.
I have it on my Sony Walkman, and initially I used it but realised the battery life seems really short compared to what was advertised. Even the option itself warns that the “charged battery life could be shorter”, which sounds really mild but it’s actually it reduces battery life quite a bit.

These days I usually turn it off since most of my music is already in FLAC/320 kbps, or streaming from Music Unlimited at 320 kpbs, so the effects of DSEE is negligilbe. I only turn it on when the walkman’s being charged.

Edit: p/s The features i’m most interested in smart screen rotation and pause when recording. Initially i was going to get the Z2, but now i”m not so sure. Will have to wait and compare the prices of both when it’s released. :)

  • Constantine

According to last events, Sony made 4.4.4 for Xperia devices first of all companies. After 4-5 days after release, or even faster. I don’t remember. Maybe something changed, and LMP will land much more faster than KitKat :)

  • Faisal Armand

Whoa dude thanks for clearing me regarding DSEE HX :)

But dude, I don’t want to pay cash to download high quality musics. Can you give me links to where I can download high quality musics for free?

  • roeshak

Chances are some of these new software features will make it to the z2. I’m sure remote play will. I mean the most capable device for this is the z2 tablet considering the display size. It’ll be strange for Sony to exclude it from these features. Let’s see what 4.4.4 brings to the table for z2. I’m quietly confident z2 will catch up to z3 on the software side if not after the next update but by Android L for sure.

  • lee jun-hoe

If you’re using a streaming service e.g. spotify/Google All-Access/Music Unlimited, you can check the option for “highest quality” that will force it to stream at 320 kbps.

Personally I think amazon offers at 256 kbps VBR is good enough, and it’s already hard to tell the difference with 320 kbps.

Don’t get me wrong about DSEE HX, it’s a good feature and it works as advertised. If I’m not mistaken it was introduced last year, appearing on the high-reso;ution walkmans (the one i have is F886).

The only drawback is that it drains battery life. Maybe they have imrpoved this issue for Z3, though I doubt so.

  • Samsung is the god of phone

JUST THIS? LOL! shame on you sony, there’s no any features can complete with GALAXY Note 4’s features.

  • Samsung is the real leader

but these features aren’t cool enough to complete with Samsung GALAXY Note 4 or even Note 2. Shame on Sosuckny LOLI

  • ishu

I hope we will get some of these features on our Z2

  • Wait for z4 my boy

  • Faisal Armand

    – 1/2.3″ 20.7MP Image sensor with 25mm wide lens & ISO 12.800

  • RealityCheck2013

COOL New features :P My poor Z1 is crying :D but i will resist & keep it still ;) + If only they could think of a way to do a good quality ZOOM for the Camera without making the phone pig-ugly like other phones with ZOOM on them. That would be ACE :P

  • f35hunter

Nice features but i will wait for Z4

  • wei147

Sadly I’m experiencing Insufficent internal storage space when updating apps everytime with my 16GB Xperia S. It’s pssing the fuck off me. Dosn’t matter low end or not. If they’re not giving us 32GB model, the 16GB model should also have this feature.

  • bimmersonygasm

Omg want this soooo bad. Was waiting doe Z2 price drop but now I don’t care. You have sold me like selling candy to a kid. Bring it to AT&T in US or unlocked with AT&T LTE bands faaaaasttt.

  • Sander Puus

Xperia S has 32 gigs internal memory of which 25.smth gigs are usable. its either u misspelled xperia Z or dont know a thing about xperias

Shu shu…get out with the note 4.We ll never get a shamesung

  • Nawi

    Cool features =)

  • Wolf0491

It should ps3 controller works with my Z. I think you can get ps3 controller work on basically any android with some app.

  • InspectorGadget80

hope they will add this feature on the Z1, Z2

  • Rikimaru

Be patient for the software feature I would not be surprised to see XDA bring use remote play on Z1 and Z2. About your dream z4 Quad HD on a so little size is not necessary. better to focus on what they do, colours contrast… ;)
Zultra was one of first phone to get snap 800 if I remember good.
So yes it’s would be good to see 810 on Z4…
But for me 801, is clearly enough. ;)

  • imparanoic

    https://www.playstation.com/psm/certified.html

z has native support for dual shock from 4.2,

third party apps and drivers, may cause lag (tried it with wiii remote, laggy it some games ), pain in the butt to set, ie, turn on Bluetooth, search, connect, pin code, etc each it to use a dual shock, uses keyboard settings, thus, you can ‘t type when using joypad

also the best dual shock third party app requires root – six axis

native support so easy. just initial set up with usb-on-the-go cable, then, just press the ps button, hey presto, instant joypad

  • do you realise that you are on a sony fan page ,and the note 4 is nothing but specs and large display what features does it have?

  • You see ,that would remove the selling point for z3 everyone would go for the z2,same like how z1 did.’t get those features of z2

  • dat ass………

  • Md Olyullah Akand

but I am pretty sure it will not be the features of Z4. I think you are thinking about Z5 or Z6(more likely).
Z4 features could be like this:
    -32 bit Snapdragon 805 quad core/octa core
-3GB RAM others almost same as Z3,
    -QHD display

    Z5 could be:
    -64 bit 805 Snapdragon quad/octa core
    -3 GB RAM
    -fingerprint sensor

after that Z6 might be as your statement…:-)

    But my demand/satisfaction:
-64 bit Snapdragon/Intel processor (preferable Intel M) and not less than 2.5GHz speed(quad core is preferable than octa core as more core more RAM usage)
-4 GB RAM (3GB also good enough if Android could made lighter and less RAM eater like iOS)
    -fingerprint sensor
    -dual LED flash
    -heart rate sensor

MY MOST DEMAND IS TO PUSH GOOGLE TO MAKE ITS ANDROID LIGHTER, FASTER AND LESS RAM EATER…
If anyone can place iOS on Z3, I’ll not look to any new device at least until Z7. Because I do believe Android phones can not kill iPhone only for the OS. iPhones are too poor in term of hardware but still they also perform most of the time better than Android phones. That’s why I do not blame Sony. My blaming is only for Google.

  • Md Olyullah Akand

Z3 is a phone. Note 4 is a phablet. Don’t make silly compare, dear blind samsung fan… Whatever Xperia devices have in term of features, still they are most ELEGANT looking. Xperia devices are not that poor featured though, they have enough pretty good features too.

  • Md Olyullah Akand

that would be great but if they cut off Home screen, then I’ll stay with my Z1. I just hate the UIs that have no Home Screen with wallpaper like iOS.

  • GregLu

Yay for the double take and the bluetooth unlock ! I’m more and more interested in the Z3c :)

    1. No octa core , its a waste of battery and actual performance is not improved other than on benchmarks.
    2. No quad HD, its a waste of battery and difference is not appreciable.
    3. Some camera hardware innovations are really required, i’m bored with the same 20.7 Mpix sensor.
    ——What I want is——
    1. Height of the phone to be reduced by a centimeter.
    2. Stellar all round camera performance.
    3. How about a color accurate OLED ? That will make me mad dance. But this seems too much to expect.
    4. Inbuild memory to be 32gb.
    5. Display size to be not above 5.2 inches.

  • Anukul

Android is open source and ios is closed, that’s why iphone give better performance with same hardware. This is true for consoles vs. pc too.

  • jag

  • hocestquisumus

Quite nice. The iDumb will sell 100 times as many nevertheless. That depresses me :(

Actually they don’t. KitKat removed it and Sony only brought it back on the T2 so far.
I’ve checked a Z1 Compact with KitKat a Z and a Z1 with KitKat and none of them had it.

I used to have this phone and almost never had this problem, with stock fw I used app2sd which allowed me to have more apps but I never used all of them at once so I uninstalled some and I was golden again.

Amazon sometimes have good deals on albums, e.g. 15 dollars for 3 albums, cheap songs etc.

7 digital have some cheap sales too, but not too common.

You can also try streaming services like Spotify, Google All Acess or even Sony Music Unlimited if it’s available. Although all claim to stream at 320 kbps in respective formats, in terms of audio quality: Sony > Google > Spotify.

Sorry I don’t condone piracy; songs and other works of art have their monetary value too just like any physical object like a mobile phone. :)

When it started up again I saw the update again, ready to be downloaded. When I wanted to download it, there came some sort of error saying “could not download with a red “!” mark”. I tried to download it several times but same problem came, so I refreshed my update center and all of a sudden it dissapeared and I couldnt find the update. My update center told me i have the newest system update but i didnt even download it! Let alone install! I have the Z and it looks like I may upgrade to the Z3.

  • RoberMC

It will probably have the Snapdragon 805 which Samsung is actually mounting in their Note 4. Sony is always mounting the second best chip.

Xperia Z had the S4 Pro — the competitrs had the SD 600
Xperia Z1 had the SD 800 — but clocked lower than the competitors
Xperia Z2 had the SD 801 — Again, clocked lower
Xperia Z3 had the SD 801 — the competitors had the SD 805

I don’t know why, but Sony is not putting enough effort in this respect.

  • RoberMC

Do you really think ANY tecnology can restore a 128 kbps song to sound like if it were 320 kbps, while keeping the song sound like the original? O.o

At 128 kbps there is a noticeable ammount of lost information, which is unrecoverable, there is no process to “upscaling” an mp3, thay would require the app to know the lost information and restore it in place. DSEE HX is nothing more than a bunch of filters which, applied to a song, make it sound “filtered” and “better” in a psycho acoustical way, just like Bravia engine does with photos.

You, as an audiophile, should avoid any kind of filtering or extra effects.
