Sony smartphoneHere is renowned cartoonist’s Kipper Williams piece in today’s The Guardian in the UK, reflecting Sony losses. This only highlights the kind of PR battle that Sony is facing with the news yesterday that it has taken a huge impairment charge to its mobile division.

I have an Xperia Z1 Compact, VAIO T Series laptop, Sony NEX-6 camera and a 2011 Bravia TV. Yes, I’m a Sony fan.

But even though I love Sony products, I can’t help but agree with this. As Sony consumers around the world suffer from Sony’s lack of software support by not thinking about their product release thoroughly, they need to wake up.

  • Shakhawat Hossain

You see shit like this happens when you introduce phones in 2014 with 2012 specs. Eg : Very low ppi(Xperia M2, C3, T3 etc), poor viewing angle(xperia e1, Xperia Sp, Z, L, M etc), mediocre camera(pretty much every sony phone has it), extremely huge bezel(E3 and mamy more i dont remember) etc. Sony phones are standard in shape but very very uncomfortable to hold in one hand. But more importantly, the reason i can’t forgive Sony for is that MOST of their low to midrange phones are really shitty in phone functionality(call voice volume low and noisy). They epicly fail in the one function which makes it a phone. How can anyone forgive that mistake?

  • jonny

Wow what. Sony just gotta pull an aggresove samsung marketing and bye bye. Apple is shit too their iwatch and iphone 6 won’t sell well i know it

  • Jaywalker

Because they stick with the same management guys for years. Make a change, worse than that can’t be. The whole planet is making jokes on Sony. Jokes, losses, damaged image what should it take to change something?

  • Shakhawat Hossain

Not to mention 2012 speced mid rangers. Actually the 2007 iphone is a better option then disgusting Xperia E1, E3 shit

  • Vuyo Ncube

Were the British always this humourless? I expected some good critical jokes but this is the best they can do?

  • WEgrapinglies7712

I was without work for 6 months when my former Co-worker finally recommended me to start freelancing from home… It was only after I earned $5000 in my first month when I actually believed I could do this for a living! Now I am happier than ever… I work from home and I am my own boss now like I always wanted… I see a lot of unhappy people around me, working the same old boring job that’s sucking the life out of them day by day… Everytime I see someone like that I say START FREELANCING MAN! This is where I started ,,,

  • m sacha

lol you know your in trouble when the Guardian is mocking you…

  • dacha

Iphone is high end phone for every year. E1 and E3 are not high end phones. It would be the same as moking this year passat to the five year old mercedes s class…

  • laci_csk

No point and no humor at all. Stupidity.

  • apolloa

Excuse me……. As a Brit, perhaps soon to be a half Welsh and English after today’s vote? I can tell you that is pretty much run of the mill humour for a cartoon joke in a newspaper, I like how they have taken shots at both Apple and Sony though. The cartoons just pick on something that’s topical of the day.
I just hope Sony and Kaz know what they are doing, hate to see Sony go down.

  • zymo

Time to wake up Sony. Pool your resources or die.

  • peteyd1984

couldn’t agree more bro. they need to stop flooding the market with confusing and incredibly similar products, and just make a FEW excellent products. I own quite a few sony products such as*deep breath in* Xperia Z2, Xperia Z Tab, A37 DSLR, A65 DSLR, Smartband, Cybershot w570 and formally an Xperia Z *exhale*

I buy Sony for the exceptional build quality and features, but working in retail (consumer electronics) I sometimes struggle to help customers understand the differences between a lot of their current smartphones.

  • Anon

Sony’s flagships have always packed the most appropriate and updated hardware, but let down catastrophically by their software; most recently demonstrated by their post processing camera algorithms. Whilst i’m in no doubt the majority of software on a Samsung device is bloat, they do include useful features like multi-window support, small apps just don’t cut the mustard. The idea has been improved over the years but the core functionality of the small apps has remained more or less the same with key omissions being a media play, video player and text message center, whilst they can be downloaded from the Play Store third part, it’s not the same as stock/

Their mid-rangers are lacking severely in almost every department making them more like low rangers, and their low rangers are so poor they’re non existent in the market. We’re on the third ‘E’ now but it hasn’t exactly changed has it?

  • mountain

Putting low end aside, even the Xperia T is a very respectable mid-rangers phone. I would any day recommend that against an Xperia C3. There is nothing to differentiate Sony’s mid to low end phones compared to others on the market.

If had they not discontinue Xperia Z and would continue to sell it for another year, with a further year of software support and a lower price (200 euros), it will definitely outclass every single mid-rangers on the market, as well as keeping the current customers happy.

  • just a sony fan!

What happened SONY??? What happened to your design, UI and mobile performance??? Honestly i love those designs back when your still with Ericsson, the very unique UI, the eye captivating designs….how about ditching the buggy android and create your own software and market, you’ve got Playstation for games, walkman for music, you already have market before android became popular, you’ve got the Bravia, TrackID and a lot more trademarks of yours, just think how to improve these platforms make it more unique than others! As a fan, MAKE US PROUD SONY! BRING BACK THOSE VERY GOOD PRODUCTS OF YOURS! YOU HAVE A BIG NAME IN THE MARKET, KICK THOSE APPLE AND SAMSUNG’s ASS!!!

  • Rifqi Al Fariz

I wanna get mad but.. :-(

Sony NEED to wake up. This is 2014, not 2004. Are they trying to sell stuff same as 8 years ago with so many products but same in specs?

I still have k500, k700, k750, w810, k850 (all of them are resting in peace) but they are awesome. Diffrent than any other phones. Better in specs, w810 have a decent quality speaker. K850 have an awesome cybershoot camera with xenon flash. K750 have unique camera design.
Now using xperia tipo because I am poor son of a bitch maybe for years.
since xperia they are trying the same but never done it right.. In android they can’t just put the new design but same spec over and over again.. They lost their “exclusiveness”.

I wanna get mad to those who insulting sony but..

  • just a sony fan!

Prevent me for liking the eye captivating APPLE designs and UI! :(

  • tudfx

    What the hell?
You can’t even install whatsapp on that crap.. and it lags like hell nowadays
Why ever in the world should I prefer it?
At least I have custom roms with the latter 2. Besides, my mum hasn’t complain. And for 80€ I’m pretty happy too.
Then I can’t undeststand mid-range phones.. have mid-range specs. Until low cost Motorola phones, sony ones were the best low and middle range phone on the market.
And please, don’t break balls with that iphone bullshit.

  • me

I’m a Sony “fan” too, but i’m tired to see my flagship deprecated after six months when they release a new one, no one but two with the compact edition now. Each time they release one I feel screwed, they should focus entirely on a flagship one straight year. Z1 is lagging as hell, black screen while on conversation, etc. Really tired.

  • Rifqi Al Fariz

Agree. In android world they can’t just make a new design (there’s nobody dare to denying it, all sony design are awesome, classy) but same in specs.

    So sad..
As a sony fan, I DEMAND REVOLUTION.:-)

  • Vuyo Ncube

Shots to either manufacturer in this cartoon were pretty dull and uninformed nonetheless. Neither funny nor critical. Kaz likely took no offense to this. Tim Cook has seen way worse shots at Apple.

  • buzzkill

I think I didn’t get the joke. Could someone explain?

  • meet 118

Iphone’s ios so so better than this fucking bithch company ( sony). Hate sony mobile now. Motorola and Samsung’s ios support is better than middle finger for u. Bitch fuck off sell your sony company in Olx no one buy your company..

  • Vuyo Ncube

What joke? I don’t see any jokes in this article.

  • Niels d. G.

    “Motorola and Samsung’s ios support”?

  • Guest

    I love you, Sony.

  • EB

I have used many Sony and Sony Ericsson phones and I stick with them because they are the best designed phone; somehow Korean designs is just not quite there yet. Unfortunately, Sony is misguided in trying to flood the market with mid-range, thinking they can do like what Samsung does.

Sony really needs to pull themselves together in the update departments- not just speed of update release, but the quality control. They are shooting themselves in the foot by pissing off newly won customers with buggy updates, let alone late. I am pretty patient with them but their new found customers may not be so tolerent. My old Xperia Go worked well with 2.3.7 on release, but once updated to 4.0 all kinds of problems appeared. Now my ZR suffered from the 4.4.2 debacle (battery drains etc) and finally the 4.4.4 fixed that but introduced other issues.

I also have a Z Ultra and it works perfectly on 4.3 that came with the phone. I dare not update it now – battery lasts a long time, everything works, and I can’t swtich back to 4.6″…

The bluetooth headset SBH-80 has very good battery life and sound but the connection can still be dodgy when talking.

They should cut the mid range T/C/M/E series and do like Apple, launch a top spec flagship, even stick to the 6 months cycle, and let the price drop to become mid-range when a new model comes out.

  • P9

we love u, Sony, we wanna see ur suprise come back! :)

  • Ritwij

    WTF did I just read

  • ryq24

Sony has lost its mojo long long time ago. It’s started with their television then iPhone came out and it hit their Walkman and mobile phone division. Ps4 is their only bright spot. Mobile review once predicted the demise of sony mobile and it looks like they were right.

  • Solano

To trade e.g. an Xperia M2 for an iCrap, sorry Iphone (1st -2007- edition)… LOL… this guy is an idiot!

  • Prateek Bhanushali

I think Design isn’t the factor here. It was only the last year when Sony changed the design language. No Company changes their Design that fast and Sony designs are much better here. Pricing is the factor causing Sony to lose market share and the Strategy to rule the Mid-segment caused Sony lose their money. Mid-seg is the toughest Segment that even Samsung and Nokia are struggling with the Chinese firm dominating there !!!

  • Prateek Bhanushali
  • Prateek Bhanushali

I think your brain will get much better value at OLX…. It is unused and the fresh piece :D

  • Kaostheory

Completely disagree. Sony’s main problem was they never built an ecosystem. We were promised compatibility with the PS3 on the X10. Finally how many years later we’re getting compatibility with the Z3 and PS4. Their hardware has never been an issue, is the software side. Apple has consistently poor hardware, so to compensate they slow things down to look smooth. If you’ve ever seen side by side by side comparisons of Windows and Mac windows almost always completes the task faster but looks laggy.

  • Kaostheory

Hardware top notch, software and marketing at or near the bottom. Every blogger will say how centering the 1 on ios is huge, but noise cancelling never even gets a mention on reviews or comparisons. It’s about a $150 option to add to any other phone.

  • Rifqi Al Fariz

Yes, agree with that. Man chinese want to rule the world

  • Sony lover

U are talking absolutely right but no need to create their own is doing well..especially it’s the most wanted in the market today..while if sony tries to invent their own software it will take a long time to be stable and it will hardly if not never beat android..they just need to add their improvements their features well stabilised as well as being innovative, have the best and most stylish UI, always push the newest hardware in their devices, fix repeated bugs in almost all devices (camera , sound these are the first two! I cant believe how SONY IS NOT IN THE PRIORITY), moreover stop making similar devices (actually bug fixing older devices by new ones instead of software updating) and cheat on their customers by some teasing commercials “demand great”..they should release just 1 flagship of Z series in one year + compact, then ultra version and tablets as mid-range

We love u sony, all my family members (6) have a device of Z series, 2 tablets Z and Z2 , 2 TVs X850B and EX31, Hi-Fi system, PS4 (the only best of sony today) + any of stuff is always sony ( laptop vgn-fw465j , MW600, Smartband SWR10, SW2, Powrer supply 3000mAh,……) plz make us proud

  • Cristiano de Oliveira

touchwiz is laggy x) But, I agree with you

  • Niels d. G.

They’re not gone. They’ll just focus on their high-end devices from now on.

  • lunkz

Thats the reason why I’m using CM11 on my Z1

  • Jacob

You can forgive that mistake by actually buying a flagship and not some bargain bin phone.

  • RoberMC

Well British humour is known to be… well humourless.

  • RoberMC

But bargain bin phones made by other brands work as intended!

  • GeeksEmpire

    I LOVE Sony products
Sony needs to focus more on supporting & release products with NO delay.
no just making similar phones each 6 months………….
i m worry about if sony end up Xperia !!!

  • RoberMC

Well 90% of iPhone users have been defending everywhere how perfect a 4″ screen was, just because Tim Co*k said so, but they knew they really wanted a bigger screen. Now Apple releases a bigger screen iPhone and it will sell like hotcakes, probably it will break all previous iPhone selling records, which will turn my theory to be true.

  • Aiden Pearce

Must be a apple fan could not resist the JOke as**h**s

  • Dark Moyan

I Love Sony but I hate their lack of software support :(

  • ZoubIWah

i dont care if the flagship is replaced after 6 month. the upgrades arent exactly making a HUGE difference hardware wize.

certainly they should make updates better tho. Heck even just them releasing new software features for new phones only is IMO a wrong move.

  • glfhman

Buy a Galaxy S# mini and tell me that device isn’t crap.

  • tk

I hear you bro,I am an Xperia sp user, I’m gonna buy a z2 next, after that I really don’t know.

  • Kim

Sony Vaio Duo 13 still best laptop i ever bought…

  • XxRampage07xX

Man I hate to see Sony die :(
But I guess that couldn’t be helped. Any ignorant company must be eliminated from the market.

  • arrow

Oh so now we need a flagship just to call someone. Really neat. -_-
I’m off to water my money-tree.

  • lee jun-hoe

Agree with the software part. I’m subscribed to Music Unlimited, but the app really could use more polish. It’s slow and buggy, compared to Spotify. The main reason I’m keeping with MU is because it has the best audio quality music, compared to Spotify.

Again, good product but execution is lacking.

  • lee jun-hoe

    Agree with both of you.

I got the Sony NWZ-F886 walkman, which offers excellent audio quality. I use it mainly to stream music from Music Unlimited. MU offers the best audio quality compared to Spotify, but the app is buggy and slow.

Also, the music player app in the walkman is not the latest Walkman app found on Xperia Z (it’s still running Jelly Bean 4.1.2), and it does not integrate with MU nor allow offline download of songs at maximum quality.

Again, this makes no sense: Sony offers a premium and excellent audio product, but does not allow it to unleash its full potential with high quality audio files. Yet the Xperia Z mobile series has got this feature for quite a while (not a knock against them, but this is just dded value to a smartphone).

    Please work on the software!

  • MDizz

Yeah, this was probably a big contributor to their demise. That along with no US carrier support or at least nothing on the level of HTC or Samsung or Moto which could easily be found on all carriers.

I remember when the original Xperia came out, it took foreveeeeeeeeeeeeeer to come out that people had moved on to other phones because the Xperia they had announced months earlier had fallen behind a generation.

They are a little better now but they still have a long way to go.

  • Danny

I really hope the future is bright for Sony. btw, the upcoming Z3 with worldwide releases should be helpful for Sony.
But let’s make one thing clear, Sony’s current device support, firmware, updates, bug-fixes and repairs are dismal.
Despite Sony announcing the End of Life support for the Xperia T, TX, V, SP, L and M, it all in desparate need of bug-fixing updates. If Sony keeps sweeping it under the rug, ignoring it while putting much effort into the Z series. of course it’s going to anger customers who are left out.

I’m not suprised, I’m just frustrated that Sony can do better, but for reasons unknown, chose not to do so.
does Sony CEO, Kazuo Hirai, have a facebook, twitter or any social media account. I’d like to ask what the heck is going on in Sony.

Sony’s competitor must have someone from the inside destroying Sony from within. I’m guessing Samsung, who basically takes other ideas and call it their “own innovations”.

Anyway I’m looking forward to the Z3, I’m looking to purchase at least 2 of the 5 devices, The Z3, Z3 Compact and possibly the Z3 Tablet, 10″ or 8″, not sure yet.

  • AA

I don’t agree. Sony hasn’t been innovative in the past year but I own an Xperia Z1 Compact and I am VERY satisfied with this little beast. GREAT battery life, good camera, overall very responsive. The only bad thing is it’s a dust magnet and is so easily scratched on the back. My phone looks like it’s been through hell but inside everything runs smoothly.

  • AudioInjectedSoul

    I didn’t get it?

  • Siberian Messenger

As a big Sony fanatic, what I’d like to say is SONY REALLY NEED TO CUT DOWN ITS LOW-MID RANGE PHONES PRODUCT LINES AND PUT ITS LIMITED OUTLAY INTO PROPAGANDA OF ITS FLAGSHIP DEVICE OR THE RESOURCES INTEGRATION / SOFTWARE OPTIMIZATION. Or else Sony Mobile will get trapped into this vicious finance whirlpool and never get back to the right track. Let’s take Huawei and Xiaomi for example. The average ?1999($312) or lower price of their phone can provide flagship software customization. This is what SONY’s mid-range phone can’t do.

Man, just get over with it, Sony is awesome whatever world say!

  • xperiafan324

    Oh snap… -_-

  • Tech Gospel

“Maybe we need more midrange phones”

  • paul4id

Unless you have a mental health disorder and are a delusional self-loathing sandal-wearing humus-munching hipster trans-lesbian “progressive”, whose only source of tech news is the drivel from iLoving Stephen Fry, then absolutely anything written in The Guardian is absolutely irrelevant to any normal sane person who has had any experience of life on Planet Earth.

The paper is well known for being a bunch of raving looney drooling iCultists and it wouldn’t surprise if they are being paid to be so either. People outside the UK need to stop attacking Sony and realise that this paper has miniscule sales figures and is the refuge of those who a few decades ago would have been placed in the lunatic asylum (and if you are a Brit who hasn’t realise this yet, then perhaps you need to re-evaluate your own mental health?)

  • Sal3m

the cartoonist looks like he is an iphone fan, he should try to find something better not this bullshit

  • Stanley08

    Still searching…

  • z1owner

I have to say that, the Sony Z1 that I have is one of the best phones I’ve ever had, just overall features and integration are really good.

I will say that I had 2 quality issues (screen went bad, and I had to reinstall everything due to touch sensor problem), but they got resolved (which means that it’s probably oriented towards technical users. I think the main problem is that the old culture that you see in consumer electronics where companies tried to design a product for every customer. Think old Ericson/Nokia. Sony could do itself a lot of good of simplifying it’s product lines to a hand full of products, rather then having what appears to be dozens of phones.

The other issue is that it appears that there’s a lot of lag time of getting products into the market. I’m interested in getting the new Z3, but it seems like they announce the phone, but it’s at least 6 months before I see a carrier supported one. In this case I do want the carrier supported one in the US, because it should have wifi calling, which would help where I live. If they can address that I suspect they’d do better.

There’s one other difference, Apple considers it’s customer to be the end-customer, where Sony still appears to see it’s customer as the carrier. They need to consider that, because it appears to result in misses, for what could be great products.

  • Shakhawat Hossain

No matter which word among these -> (High end, Mid end, Low end) you put before the word “Phone”, it still remains a “Phone” ! And Phones are made for talking. And in that department my friend, Sony is lagging far behind ! Whether you a butthurt fanboy or don’t, i don’t know… But you better embrace the truth that even a $35 Nokia phone(which is now almost non-existent) does that thing better !
On another note, i have been a fan of Sony Ericsson and i am a fan of Sony (I had Xperia Acro S and now Xperia SP) but that does not keep me from pointing out their biggest flaws because i want them to succeed. And clearly you don’t !

  • Shakhawat Hossain

I completely agree with you. Samsungs low range to mid range phones are crap with insane price here in Bangladesh but surprisingly they does very well in basic functionality like crisp voice over the ear speaker, loud and clean speaker sound, very good camera according to the pixel count etc… But their shitty broadcom processors really suck :p Anyways, Sony most of the times fails in those departments i don’t know why. Just compare an 8mp Xperia SP camera with a 5mp Samsung galaxy S duos 2 camera and you will know what i am talking about. I am so ashamed of my Xperia SP’s camera that i don’t even try to take pictures with it in front of my friends, ever… :(

  • Arup

Obviously a joke made by an iTAARD, the SONY Xperia are years ahead of any crap made out by Apple.

  • Battal Aljadei

    They’re right .

  • Kaizer Allen

Xperia SP users are known to be one of the most whiny of Sony’s customers. In almost every article that mentions something about software updates, you seem them moaning about the lack of upgrade to 4.4. It’s past its 18-month OS update cycle. I hope you’re not in that crowd.
