Z3 Compact vs Galaxy Alpha_10The Sony Xperia Z3 Compact’s biggest competitor in the Android space is most probably the Samsung Galaxy Alpha. The 4.7-inch Galaxy Alpha is Samsung’s first in the Galaxy line to use a metal frame and this new design has largely been well received.

However, the 4.6-inch Xperia Z3 Compact arrives with arguably a nicer design and a better spec sheet too. We now have some great side-by-side pictures of both phones that should help you decide which one you favour. Let us know which handset takes your fancy and why in the comments below.

  • Z3c is even more compact than alpha. It’s bad that it is fatter.

  • Mike Gonzalez

it doesnt look much fatter tho, cuz the Alpha has that camera bump on the back

  • Christian Alfonso Sanchez Mazu

    Xperia for ever

  • michs

Only with the colors but z3 compact camera is better

  • michs

Also the screen z3 compact is better than alpha

  • Michael Hernandez

Shamesung making a unique miracle phone with metal frame, is impossible to beat Sony, with his yrs of Xperience, making premium phones with premium manufacturing process.
    SO…sony 4ever.

  • DrazenDodig

45% bigger battery, waterproof, stereo speakers, list just goes on.

  • Gfh

U start too late SONY… take the world by storm…why u dont use ips panel in 2010,2011,2012,2013 xperia phones??!??!while samsumg using super Amoled display since 2010…

  • GeeksEmpire

more color on Xperia z3c display but in viewing angle galaxy alpha display is so nice.
    but generally xz3c is awesome.

  • Pat Ron Shiruba

    Who cares

  • GFH

Using TN& VA panel in a flagship is a nice joke…when samsung using super Amoled in low &midrange &flagship phone .Sony still using TN panel in their flagship…

  • Pat Ron Shiruba

    Samsung makes butt ugly phones

  • GFHh

But that TN panel is much uglier than samsung phones…Samsung phone is not ugly just Ok..

  • walker

better look SONY UI on TN display than look nyamnyung UI on their super amoled display.

  • GFhhh

    Nice joke

  • rick23ro

Z3C has now plastic frame and back panel, what’s premium in that? Shame on you Sony. Samsung looks 10 times stylish with that metal frame. Oh, I own a Z1C, not even thinking about changing it with that plastic crap, even if has slightly more performance.

  • BruceLeeRoyJenkins

I do have to commend Samsung on at least trying to go for a more premium device. An A for effort, not so much for the execution. Metal frame will definitely improve the feel, but the whole dimpled back has this weird feeling and, added to overall shape that Galaxy devices take will always hold it back.

  • bigshynepo

Those are two good looking phones but I gotta hand it to Sony on their design, so seemless. That camera just blends in over the bumpy back of the Samsung. The image of the stream looks better on the Sony too (but I admit that could be due to settings).
All in all, you can tell Samsung is taking some simplistic design cues from Sony and for good reason.

  • Killian Khoo

I guess you are a big samsung fan ?
Please do some research before saying anything, you are ashaming yourself here ~
Samsung NEVER use AMOLED on low-end and mid-end only high end like Note series and S-series, and now plus Alpha Series ~

  • serio

I dislike the smartphone that camera sticks out like iPhone 6 and Galaxy Alpha.

  • Robert

I love Xperia Z series and now we have more themes:

  • Me

Yes, the Z3C has a plastic frame, but the back is glass. Meanwhile, your Z1C has a plastic back, and if you haven’t noticed that, why are you complaining about “plastic crap” if you can’t tell the difference?

  • yuskhayru

i will try samsung in my next device. this looks premium for me

  • Gitarooman

no comparison honestly, the back of Alpha looks like some ghetto shit.

  • Disregard Constabulary

i think he meant that the sides of the z1c are metal but the z3c is plstic. but the new transluscent plastic is meant to be better to grip. we’ll see

  • fish

Z3c by Sony for me :)

  • Ethan ‘blaze’ Parker

What? My Z2 has IPS, not TN

  • Killian Khoo

    From some video on youtube…
I can see the flaps used on Z3c is much improved alot compare to my Xperia ZR ~

  • Reza

What a truly samesung knight…wowww, let me tell u something Korean boyband, Sony is Sony don’t screw with ur beloved wife called samesung..

  • Reza

    What a blinded fanboyism, ignorant.

  • ritamasrex

Isn’t the frame of Samsung Galaxy active fully copy of iPhone?

  • Jake Lew

The plastic beside actually quite sturdy .
I have xperia z and i think clear plastic beside is better .

  • Luis Antonio P.

    Z3 is most elegant

  • Gutt Grinder

To tell you honestly the transparent plastic on the sides of the z3 compact gives a different appeal (for me it looks like glass when you look at it from a far). Also the plastic on the sides of the phone will surely help when it comes to handling…

  • arcu de triumf

How much big is big enough? I mean 4.7″? Really? 5″ ? 5.5″ ? What is the limit for a mobile? One hand isn’t enough anymore to use it. Everybody around me can see what I write or read on the mobile. Have you seen people with a plate at their ears how they look? No one makes mobile under 5″ anymore lately. It’s huge.

  • xperiafan324

About 2 years late for this rant aren’t you? And the Xperia Z3 Compact fits the 4.6″ screen in the same sized body as that of the Xperia Z1 Compact. So the screen increase comes at no cost to single-handed use.

  • xperiafan324

    Don’t feed the troll bro.

  • Alex Norris

IMO. Both devices are good, each in its own way. Alpha in profile looks beautiful, because of metallic edging, but the back side samsung looks cheap and not beautiful, although for user it will not be big problem, since user will work with the screen. With regard to screens quality, both Sony and Samsung screens, are good and i have no complaints here, only on large viewing angles can be seen that the Z3 screen little distort colors, purple hues, but it is not problem . My choice – Xperia Z3 compact, because it`is more compactly and practical, I like Sony design. It is a pity that the camera software from sony again has the same flawed, noises, overexposed photos, artefacts, and again we see pixels.. Why for Sony mobile software still big problem, i don`t know…

  • adneon0

Simply WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOW.. Sony’s display has now matched (actually its more better) Amoled displays of galaxy.. Jaw dropping improvement Sony .. Cheers. !
Now just put a limit on your smartphone launching.. especially midrange ones.. or you will drive into trouble again next year .. !

  • Emil Oskarsson

Xperia z have dragontail glass on the front and gorilla glass on the back

  • Prateek Bhanushali

Except the Slim body, everything is much better on Z3C…. Even the price !!!

  • Prateek Bhanushali

And woww… Samsung Can’t make a looker even with metal frame, And Xperia is better with the plastic !!!

  • Non removable battery, on-screen buttons…

  • Tomislav Mati?

Now Sony LCD IPS screen (TRILUMINOS screen with Live LED colour) is much more accurate in colour than Samsung super amoled. Sony UI is smoother than Samsung TouchWiz UI. Sony uses metal frame from XPERIA Z ultra on smartphone and Samsung uses imitation materials (on Galaxy S5 that chrome is so low quality that it damages so easy; Galaxy Alpha is the first Samsung smartphone with metal frame). I can go on hole day like that.
And for me Sony devices are more beautiful than Samsung.

  • roeshak

I for one is very pleased with what Samsung is now doing as far as design goes. The alpha looks and feels premium as does the note 4.
Not really one for phones with displays smaller than 5 inches so neither is really an option.
Having said that and after seeing the note 4, the galaxy s6 is the device I’m most looking forward to.
With falling sales, Samsung have finally realised that many have a problem with the presentation of their devices both in hardware and software.
One things for certain, the galaxy s6 is going to be one cracking device. It’ll certainly have the best processing package available, premium design and I’m sure ip certification, a great display, I’m also sure Samsung will use a 20mp camera with OIS.
Right now, that’s the phone I’ve got in my head for next year. Seeing the z3 series is making me lose confidence in Sony. The auto modes for the camera are still hopelessly poor making them yet again, cameras that can only be used to achieve great results with manual controls. Speaking of manual controls, not seeing full controls including shutter speed and aperture width included in the z3 was very disappointing. For devices with such great hardware and pretty meh software, the least Sony could do is give us full manual control. Also I don’t think I could ever buy another Sony device until there’s an official confirmation from them that they’re ditching the 6 month cycle. After seeing what’s happened to the value of the z2, I ain’t Fucking with that Bs no more!
My Android experience has purely been a Sony story since I picked up the x10 and it’s mini sibling in 2010. I’m now ready to give Samsung a go. They’ve made enough changes this year to justify the vote of confidence.
One thing left now Samsung, touchwiz, please please please make that joker less bloated and less cartoonish. They do that, and they’ll once again leave all android competitors eating dust.
I’m just losing faith in Sony. There’s just something about the company’s philosophy and attitude that just clashes with market conditions and expectations. Time for a change!
I still think the z2 was the best all rounder when released, just bitterly disillusioned with what’s happened to it since then.
There’s just something about the way Sony Ericsson and now Sony do business that always just leaves a very sour tate in the mouths of many of their users.

  • Carls Alvin

Why this z3c dont have the same frame than Z3 ? fuck sony where is your #xperiadetails now :(

  • AsadMulla

Exactly. there’s no need. Sony can make it without protruding lens. Why cant others

What did happen to the Z2? I’m pretty sure it will still be supported for at least another year.

  • roeshak

Please take one look at the price of the z2 and then compare it to that of the s5 and m8. When you consider that the z2 had a higher price tag than both devices until rumours of the z3 began, you’ll find the answer to your question.
Apart from the devaluation issue, the phone’s sitting there waiting for a software update just because Phony wants to launch the z3 first. With Phony’s 6 month cycle Bs, after a year the z2 would be 4th maybe 5th in line for any potential updates while the s5 and m8 would be at worst 2nd in line.
Yes that’s right, I’ll be replacing the word Sony with Phony henceforth until I see this nonsense ended!

  • Niels d. G.

A little bit extra thickness helps a great deal when it comes to grip and holding comfort, and also makes the phone less prone to flex damage in your pocket. Also in a smaller device, more room to fit better internal components.

  • Niels d. G.

The z2 still costs around 600 euros, I don’t see any huge value drop?

  • roeshak

Well here in the UK it’s lost about £130 of its value in just 4 months or so. That’s just appalling in my view. It’ll get worse still once the z3 hits the shelves.

  • Niels d. G.

Are you sure it’s not just a temporary special offer?

  • roeshak

No it isn’t, it’s just a price drop. You see the z3 isn’t really an upgrade to the z2. It’s a replacement device. Sony will obviously cease production of the z2 soon if they haven’t done so already.
The annoying thing is, it’s Phony who’ve done this to their own device and not the market. The z2 held is own and stayed above its competitors until the z3 became imminent.
They literally devalued their own device lol. Not the sort of BS I can continue with. Their flagrant disrespect of the term flashship is something I won’t be putting up with any longer.

  • Niels d. G.

I think sony’s intensions with the 6 month cycle is not necesserily to give existing customers an upgrade every 6 months, but rather to keep their assortment looking “fresh” for potential new customers.
About the price drop, we’ll see. It might just be a local thing in the UK. Over here in Belgium, even at sony’s own website the z2 still costs 600 euros which is barely any cheaper than when it first came out.

  • Niels d. G.

In the sixth picture it looks like the SGA’s battery cover has a defect.

but xperia z3 c is more plastic than galaxy alpha…

  • Jake Lew

And plastic on the side .
I don understand why u mention front and back =/
we are talking about side .

    Samsung, too much bezel!

  • Lolli

Actually alpha has a paper thin plastic back, Z3C has glass (4 real this time). So plastic frame, plastic back and metal frame glass back neutralizes each other. imo frame of z3c looks just too delicious almost like a hard candy :D Alpha has more business like look.

  • lem

You’re right but the mini series are also midrange and they have amoled, they are still S series though. On the other hand TN or other displays are generally better in samsung phones. Like Core versus M.

what kind of hypocrisy is this ? huh ? y’all used to taunt samsung for it’s plastic build , and now after they made metal frame all of a sudden the plastic looks nice on sony’s phone….

don’t get wrong , after buying xperia z1 , i became fan of high qualty plastic texture like note 3 and 4 , cuz the glass feeling on xperia phones always sucks , the omnibalance sucks..

so don’t tell me the back of xperia z3c is a lot better than galaxy alpha , cuz isn’t

  • pick-a-name

the samsung phone has a physical home button, which you have to press and not just to touch. Pressing buttons takes more time than touching surfaces and is very uncomfortable (in my eyes). I’m glad to own the z1c and the time of physical buttons is over (after s3mini)
Question: does the z3’s really have plastic frames instead of the z1’s aluminum? Is this progress or a bad sign?

The first case of a cracked XZ3C backside is here:

According to the review, the glass backside of the Xperia Z3 Compact cracked inexplicably; they did some water and dust/sand tests, but no drops.

Yes indeed, it’s not to tempt existence customers. It couldn’t possibly be, not with specs like these.
It’s just a misguided policy. This is a company after all who’ve been announcing below forecast sales for some time now so it must certainly isn’t having the commercial effect Phony is hoping for. It’s just pissing off existing customers and confusing new ones!

  • AsadMulla

gone back to £430. I managed to pre order one as did a friend of mine. Anybody else???

  • Mr P

Why would I want to remove the battery? On screen buttons have proven to be my preferred choice after using the Xperia Z. USB port covers are annoying though but you can also charge using the magnetic strips on the side.

display ::: xperia z3 better than LG G3
Xperia Z3 vs Z2 vs LG G3 vs HTC One

  • Removable battery gives you:
    – opportunity to Hard Reset device in case of hang(freeze)
    – If battery discharged you can use spare battery
    – you can turn off the phone completely so no one can trace your location or use your device as mic + camera to spy :)

Theres a bunch of info and pictures on the price website as well which seems more “to the point” than american review sites. Click it :)

The z3 has the brightest colors, but it’s hard to distinguish the two greens though.

  • Apple, the king!

But people still buy iphone 6 like crazy, 10 millions in 3 days hehe so what about your $hitny? but… who cares, Xperia sucks!

  • Lolli

For one sony’s plastic phones always looked better if not the best. And what we (at least i) didn’t like about samsung was their design not particularly materials used in it. Plastic is a sturdy material but Samsung choses to put thin ones on the back to make the phone thinner. I don’t think it’s high quality but if you say so I believe you.

For two sony makes it unique, the metal frame on Z1-2 looks different than others with two-tone paint. Just like that the transparent plastic frame which has never been seen before. Unlike Alpha which has diamond cut frame seen before on iP5&HTC1

On Z1 it was ASF on glass feeling, now it’s just glass. It does make a difference.

For three if omnibalance sucks, tell me why S family and note family got sharper corners-flatter sides while older gen was more round? Did they suddenly think sharper corners were more ergonomic? At least sony has a design philosophy. What does samsung call their design?

Z3C does not look that premium but how can one say it’s ugly? Alpha looks more premium aka business-like. It’s beautiful, too. I just said that neither of them 100% premium with plastic being present in design.

  • ic

    HAha i c what u did there

  • ZoubIWah

    why not ? its glass
i think everyone would have liked the z3c better with metal frame/borders as well, but the glass back is pretty neat
ive a z1c and i replaced the plastic back by a glass back (the Japanese version) and its really nice.

the alpha doesnt look bad either

  • ZoubIWah

buy a z2 then? i dont think how the customer loses with 6mo release.
u want premium get latest u want cheap get 6mo old phone… win-win

  • IMO, the Galaxy Alpha kinda look like it’s ripped off from Nokia 930/830 in terms of design. Well, the metal frame design, that is.

  • ..

  • Van Helsing

Both look great, the Alpha looks more stylish IMO.
Though the compact just blows the alpha away in battery life lol.

  • Pat Ron Shiruba

Go and play with your bandaid phone. We’ll be using our pieces of art Z3’s.

  • parjiw

idiot. they will spy you as soon as you insert the battery too! if you are that paranoid, dont buy any digital products. i wonder why they camera spy me when the phone is in my pants.

my sony battery never needs a spared. been using it for years, and there’s always a hard reset buttons combo you noob. no problem with that.

built in battery means people CANT steal your phone. you can TRACK them instead. if i get your noon sony phone i will just unplug the battery. noob. hahahaha

  • shanefalco

Color is more natural in galaxy alpha…the sky is blue and not purple as z3compact…

  • JHMBB2

Damn I love that colour on the Compact

  • First of all, idiot is the son of your father.

At least i can stop someone spying on me if i needed to. But you would need to throw away your phone. Very clever… very clever. And i’m not talking about government.

If u’ve been using it for years does it still works like new? Sounds stupid. Hard reset combo is good… but what if it fails?

You are right about third point.

  • Sumo

For some reason the Samsung G Alpha looks kind a ‘cheap’ on the outside… well at least compared to the Z3 Compact. The Z3 looks elegant. I guess it’s the color…

  • Timothy Crayon

Beauty (SONY Z3 compact) and the Beast (Sungsung Alpha)

  • robertkoa

On the Z3 Compact , we are hoping it has some type of special , durable glass on the back.

I have heard that it is either Gorilla Glass 3 or Dragontail Glass on the front ( Sony uses both ) but no definite type for back glass.

    Anyone have direct info ?

Back glass scratches easily according to many and breaks easily.

A great phone but I would like to see this immediately corrected by SONY
    on current production.

looking for the Xperia Z3/Z3 Compact/Z3 Tablet Compact home launcher
for your Android device? It looks better on an Xperia, but hey, the
choice is yours! Well, first, you need an Android 4.2.2 (or over)
device. The dev is working on the launcher for Android 4.1 and even,
4.0, if possible. Go to this link:-
and if you scroll down, you will find the .apk. It includes some
widgets, too! There is a ‘no-root’ apk and a ‘Superuser’ apk. If you are
rooted, it will be better if you use the, ‘Superuser’ one, because you
can use your stock widgets. Thank you, and please leave a reply if you
    need help, or anything.
