Xperia Z3 and Z3 Compact battery life lives up to lofty claims

z3-battery-h1One of Sony’s big marketing claims around the Xperia Z3 and Xperia Z3 Compact was the two-day battery life. The Xperia Z3 has a 3100mAh battery (Xperia Z2: 3200mAh), whilst the Xperia Z3 Compact has a 2600mAh battery (Xperia Z1 Compact: 2300mAh).

Sony’s boast of its two-day battery life looks well founded judging by some tests from GSM Arena and PhoneArena. The results from both sites place the Xperia Z3 and Xperia Z3 Compact near the top of the tree when it comes to battery life (excluding phablets).

PhoneArena managed to get 10 hours 2 minutes from the Xperia Z3 Compact and 9 hours 29 minutes from the Xperia Z3. They tested it using a custom script trying to replicate real-life non-stop usage. GSM Arena’s web browsing test, the closest to PhoneArena’s test, managed 14 hours and 52 minutes. Overall, these are some great times in terms of battery. We’re very pleased to see that Sony has focused on such a useful area for all users.

    Silence the doubters.

  • Carljn

Even though i loath Samsung I have to agree with that list. All Notes have been phenomenal and dominated the phablet market.
I wish Sony would put effort into phablets. Or someone to use Sony’s mentality, as in industrial design, waterproofness, LCD, glass back, light UI, etc.

  • Ambroos

The Xperia Z Ultra is still a beastly device with a pretty low price nowadays and top notch hardware. Work considering at least.

  • gtop

Amazing how the Z3C completely chews the iPhone 6 and 6+, which can only manage 5h22m and 6h32m respectively in the same PhoneArena test. Learn from Sony, Apple.

  • Lucian

Sony claims 2 day battery life and delivers.
Apple claims 10 hour usage. Fails by half.

  • Carljn

Indeed. I was close to getting it but decided on a Z1 instead. I agree with Sony’s strategy and mindset for phones. I’m hoping Sony will release a Z4 Ultra, with slightly better camera, this spring when I’m due for an upgrade.

  • ZoubIWah

by that logic sony would need to hit 48h on that bench.
a sony device can be used for 2 days, thats different

an apply device can be used for a day.

the tests they have above are pretty heavy tests. my z1 lasts me 3 days, and my sgs3 lasts me also 2 days. im a light user. checking mail, web a couple of times a day and not much more. some texting/phone thats it.
pretty sure the z3c will last me 3-4 days ;)

  • Lucian

Umm, no? Sony claims battery life for 2 days of general use and according to gsmarena it can handle 101h so it will definitely handle 2 days. On tests done for sony they used the phone for 5h general usage per day and it gave 2 day battery life. Whole test is on sony website. They claim 2 day battery life and not 2 day usage.
Apple claims 10h calls/web/video usage and they clearly didn’t make the 10h mark, not even close enough.
It’s a big difference between battery life and usage, 2 day battery life doesn’t mean you use the phone 24/7..

  • Riyal

Why ask for a phablet if the size of the Xperia Z3 has little difference compared to the note 4? If you ask me the Xperia Z3 should belong to the phablet category already. If this sony trend is still the same next launch date I’m pretty sure Xperia Z4 would be of the same size as note 4 already.

  • Riyal

It’s 2 day moderate usage… I have a z1 compact and it can literally make it up to a week if I just charge it to 100% and leave it on without touching it. But with moderate usage which means using it as a phone not as a computer(a couple of calls and texts a day without internet and on 2g signal) it could last 2 to 3 days without a sweat depending on the signal strength.

Calling all the “Dat Bezel Ranters Association” please leave some negativity now to balance the positive comments in this article :)

  • Billy de Fretes

just fix post processing, excellent customer service (very poor in Indonesia ) , and massive marketing campaign surely will put Sony above lenovo, lg or even samsung (based on market share).

  • Billy de Fretes

dat bezeelll… dat.. dat… dat… howly sweet mother of battery

  • Clarence Alvarado

Unless Samsung gives up with exclusivity on Wacom pens, Sony will give a S on making an industrially designed phablet.

  • finch35

Oh god, that white bezel. Hahahaha

  • Abdul Ghani

agreed post processing is the one making sony phones camera fail

Just wondering why the compact has longer charging time compared to s5, m8 considering all these phones relatively have similar battery capacity and chipset with the compact. I ever heard that snapdragon 800 or 801 featured quick charging. But why thats not happen with the compact. Is that charger output matters, low output ampere? Anyone here have z3 compact? And how about the ampere output in that charger? 1A or 2A. Im really considering to upgrade to the compact after dissapoint with the not so good battery life of original z and need more compact phone. And the compact is a good idea.

  • CAPstain

DAT CRAPPY HUWEI GOT 11HRs?!??! AND THAT SHITASTIC LUMIA 635 AS WELL?!?!

  • carmelous

it should have a 1.5 ampere output charger…

(I’ve seen it in an italian unboxing: http://bit.ly/1ruamHw at min. 1:39 he says “un alimentatore da 1 ampere e mezzo” which, translated, is similar to what I’ve said before)

  • DrazenDodig

Z3 is overall smaller than Z1… lol

  • xperiaDROID

So? You jelly, blind Sony fanboy? Learn how to spell before you post.

  • xperiaDROID

People should queue up and pre-order phones like these, not crappy Apple iPonies.

  • ZoubIWah

yeah you’re playing on words because you dislike another brand, is what im saying really. which is really not necessary since the Z’s have a much better battery life than iphones.

  • Riyal

It’s just thinner but still taller than the Z1.

  • gtop

That’s true, the battery life of the Z1C when on 2G is particularly epic.

  • Azhy

Hahaha look guys how will apple broke ;-) please xperia blog share this news . http://www.nbcnews.com/tech/mobile/flexible-display-new-iphone-6-prone-bending-some-users-find-n210051

  • 1.5A

My Xperia S came with a 1.5A Charger. I’m not expecting anything less than that for future Xperia

Phonearenna reduce the score of Z3C battery life. First it was 14h 44min, after the retest it’s only 10h 2min , freaking 4h 42 min less than the first time. I can only think of two scenario why it’s happened –
1, They were drunk when they test the first time
    2. They don’t want their primary sponsor (read samsung) to get angry because Sony will get two much attention with their phenomenal battery life.

  • roeshak

Although welcomed, the battery performance I don’t believe to be a significant selling point. I think most people are comfortable charging their phones overnight and so a full days good usage is enough.
I mean yesterday, at 9.30pm I still over 70% left on my z2.Yes it was a day of very moderate usage but still very happy with that.
I’m really looking for improvements from Sony in other areas now, most notably in the camera department. The battery life box was already ticked with the z2.Just feel like Sony’s now confident enough to use the battery life in their marketing.

  • Dan Vafidis

he’s not playing on word, Apple plays on words ;)

  • Dan Vafidis

    number 2 imo

  • DrazenDodig

it is also narrower, while being 0.2″ larger screen.

  • goldenblls

Fantastic battery performance for a smaller phone. Mine arrives tomorrow. :D

  • gunboat_d

I went with lumia 1520 over Z Ultra for two reasons: Camera and OS. My Xperia U has a better camera than the Z Ultra. but if the price gets low enough for the Ultra, i might snag one as a good backup to the 1520.

  • goldenblls

Oh dear. Reports are spreading. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-29331349

To bad they changed the notification led, the speaker version looked better…

sometimes i thought PA always bias (iphone fanatics) but the result is predictable … Z2 deserve it

  • Ricardo

And the Windows phone smartphones ? The Lumia 1520 was awesome and works succesful

  • jag

Z3 now available in singapore! ^^

  • Alter

    wow so much damage control

  • Alter

I’m sure it’s just Indonesian problem, as Sony’s Tokyo Game Show Booth Companions are smart women. I guess they should recruit more foreigners than locals as customer service.

Awesome price offer for Z3 Compact O_o http://www.sgbest.com/product.php?id=736

Yes but no one has been physically able to NOT touch the Z3 Compact for that long.

I think the longest is 18 hours for not touching Z3 C, lol.
