Confirmed: Xperia Z3 for T-Mobile US has a locked bootloader

T-Mobile Xperia Z3 Locked Bootloader_1Surprise, surprise. The Sony Xperia Z3 (D6616) for T-Mobile US has a locked bootloader. We didn’t really expect any different given that all of T-Mobile’s recent Sony Xperia devices have a locked bootloader, however we thought it was worth flagging in case anyone may have thought differently.

The inability to unlock the bootloader will mean T-Mobile Xperia Z3 owners will not be able to experiment with custom ROMs. Even the ability to root the handset may be limited and is dependent on an exploit being discovered that works on a locked bootloader. The Xperia Z1s for T-Mobile did manage to get root, but only months after its release.

Was wondering why it didn’t say Band 12 in the picture, so is not supported or the have to release a firmware and active it?

  • Raj Singh

Not really an issue since you can buy an unlocked version…

Why will you use a custom rom? Xperia rom is good enough. It carries its own identity. Custom rom is for Samsung users :P

  • Wolf0491

    Uh duh?

  • Utsav Shah

    Why? Sony?
    Why?

I was thinking of buying it :/

  • Emil Oskarsson

Well try out a room like existenz and you cannot use the original Sony rom anymore because of all those wonderful extra functions ^^

  • Ethan ‘blaze’ Parker

You can use ExistenZ on locked bootloader too. -_-

All custom STOCK based ROMs will work on locked BL, you need unlocked BL only for CM, PA etc.

Even MIUI can be installed on locked Z2.

  • Ethan ‘blaze’ Parker

    You’re in the US?

  • Emil Oskarsson

I am using existenz on locked bootloader :)

  • AndropaX

It’s not Sony, but T-Mobile who wants it that way.

If you buy your device directly from Sony it will be unlockable.

  • Locked Bootloader is okay

HAVE YOU EVER HEARD OF AROMA ROMS? THEY WORK WITH BOTH LOCKED AND UNLOCKED BOOTLOADER… THERES NO NEED TO UNLOCK YOUR BOOTLOADER BC OF CUSTOM ROMS OR ROOT.. try Existenz or trinityVengeanceRaptorX aroma roms. they’re amazing

I’m using the Volume Keys to switch the Music titles, which the Original Rom does not support. And the DSP Manager is better, Root for TB, Root for Catlog, Privacy settings, and so on.

  • Keepin it a 100

An unlocked version of T Mobile’s 32 GB model?
