Sony prepping a 12-inch tablet with stylus?

in Rumours

Sony Xperia logoSony may be considering a large 12-inch tablet device according to a report from Digitimes. It says that Sony will launch a high-specced 12-inch tablet with stylus during the first quarter of 2015. If true, this new device would most likely launch with the Xperia Z4 following a formal reveal at either CES or MWC 2015.

The report goes on to say that Sony may not be convinced about the demand for such a device, therefore Sony will only place limited orders. There are no other details right now, but is this something you would be interested in? We imagine that a 12-inch tablet would only attract a niche segment. However, if you are looking forward to such a device, we’d love to hear why in the comments below.

Thanks Kylu!

Is great news for competitors, more negative assets for Sony.

I knew they were going to do this since they no longer sell PC’s. I own the Vaio Tap 11. It’s basically a tablet with full PC specs. My thoughts are Sony sold their PC division because they knew that the industry is moving to mobile devices. The 12” tablet is the size of a laptop. I expect it to be a full PC tablet similar to the Tap 11.

i name this device the: Xperia Z4 Tablet Ultra

I could be interested. I’m still using my Xperia Tablet Z LTE and im having Wi-Fi streaming issues from the very beginning. And an upgrade from 10″ to 12″ would be nice :-)

Make it run Windows and I’ll buy. Much like Surface Pro 3, Android tabs are useless.

  • Vuyo Ncube

Bigger battery, QHD JOLED display, functional stylus, better multitasking. Basically a Note Pro without the tacky surface finish and with IP certification. Running Windows instead of Android would be great but battery life may be worse and the price will be too high for a decent CPU and iGPU.

Xperia Z2 Tablet is not doing well and yet they want to release a bigger one?

Make a windows Tablet… I would prefer Android over Windows for tablet. It might be Microsoft Surface killer… #fingercrossed

  • Abhijeet Gangoli

Make Windows Tablet SONY… I would prefer Windows over Android for tablet at that size. It might be Microsoft Surface killer. #FingerCrossed

  • Killian Khoo

Actually MS surface with Windows 10 will be great platform ~
The new Windows 10 UI will do great for surface platform ~
And if Sony really want to do this, I think they better separate the UI for tablet and phone ~
So the Sony current UI is not really good for Tablet platform ~

  • #demand great already used,it’s gonna be
    #Demand greater

  • HuLaNa

4:3, 13″ is more better for a tablet

  • User2080

  • User2080

  • Maybe?

Governments may not like it… lol

  • elpollillo

But it must have Windows PC, not mobile..

  • Vignesh Raja

Windows is more suited for Tablets. That too 12 inch Tab? Sony, run it on windows. Don’t forget Water proofing.

    What a ugly long name
I prefer just “Xperia Tablet” for 12-13 inch and “Xperia Tablet Compact” for 8.9 inch

  • xperiafan324

If sony uses this then there would be plenty demand
, They could probaly fit it in the same body as the Z2 Tablet since the bezels on that are already quite big.

My income together with my wife and bills will prevent me from buying it, lol it will be expensive too expensive for ordinary people, if it is 500 euro with lte i would consider it, with cover and bt keyboard 600 euro, windows 10 os, so it can replace the vaio productline.

I only started last year with a 10 inch tablet. It’s still too small when you also do some work with it. A 12″ tablet would be almost perfect as it’s near a standard DINA 4 page size. Combined with a stylus pen, a batterie that last at least 1 day and a cool docking station with magnetic contacts, this would be the family tablet for your living room! I’m highly interested in it (as I already learned to know the quality of the Xperia Smartphones).

  • seppl

… oh, and of course, it has to have Android installed – of course! :-)

  • thoughts

I think there is a google policy to prevent that

  • ReasonPanda

It really comes down to personal preferences i guess.. For me, my Z3 handles pretty much everything an android tablet can offer. A windows powered tablet however, would be another story. ;P

  • User2080

let the chinese do it and sell it in china. they won’t give a care.

  • Tjaldid

Microsoft made a profit on Surface I think it was around $900mil

  • EPGuest

I believe the Surface 3 Pro is getting more and more popular around college students and that’s a pretty important business

  • IRB7600

I’m not sure if there is really a 12inch Xperia tablet or they are actully talking about this….a prototype Windows tablet made by VAIO (not owned by Sony anymore) , 12.3inch 2,560×1,704 3:2 display , i7-4760HQ

  • IRB7600

Sony sold its PC business not long ago …….. employees and shareholder would kill Kaz if he decides to restart PC business so quickly.

  • Damon Adrian

There already is one. Its called VAIO tap 11

  • Vas Varnava

If it’s for that nvidia k1 chip then yeah definetly

  • asdfg

currently i;ve 11.6″ tablet PC based on Windows8.1 with stylus from Samsung (based on Wacom technology)… i think, 11-12″ is better for making notes, watching Movies…
But…. there android is bad choice for device with screen bigger than 7″… windows is more usefull than Android…

  • Stefan Alm

Sony did make Windows tablets, they were a part of their Vaio brand…

  • azzido

With tegra K1 yes, and normal windows, I would be able to play all my windows games on it, juat having the device in my hands, 12 inch seems superb for web browser as well :) newest windows and highestvspecs is a must and then I will run to the shop for it :p and the best camera and speakers!

  • Perfect device for any organization using Google apps.

  • wumps13

Hopefully they are working on the bezel and on software design. I own a nexus 5 my wife a z3 compact and I am really not impressed by the software and sometimes it is bugging without any update since 3 weeks.

Maps — I bought a 11.5″ touchscreen Chromebook, with potential for map usage a major factor, but I would really like to be able to use my various Android map apps (Backcountry, Locus, AlpineQuest,, et al) on a big screen & with a stylus.

Sketching — whether cartography, art, or technical, a stylus on a bigger surface beats the heck out of a finger, touchpad, or mouse – or a smaller surface.

These days nobody wants to buy VAIO. Because Sony dumped it…

GREAT : Make it the 1st tablet with a real 4K resolution 12″ display and full 4K 60p recording w/ some sort of HDMI 1.4 full 4K 60p output, supported by a processor sized for that, and offering latest WiFi + 4G LTE capability, and there could be a bunch of guys like me, who bought their 1st Hull HD tablet more almost 3 years ago, that would be ready to buy a new tablet set that way to replace it as soon as next year….

  • amy

I love Sony products I’ve been praying for a bigger tablet I think Samsung would have some competition and I plan on buying the Sony xperia z ultra next year so Sony keep up the good work can’t wait to see what other gadgets they come out with!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
