PlayStation MusicSony has announced that it will be closing its Music Unlimited service and will instead launch PlayStation Music with Spotify. Users will be able to link their PlayStation Network accounts with Spotify. The Music Unlimited service will close on 29 March 2015.

PlayStation Music (PS Music) will launch this spring on Xperia smartphones/tablets and the PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4 across 41 regions around the world. As part of the process, Sony will also be rebranding Video Unlimited to PlayStation Video (PS Video).

Thanks Ajit, ghtop and juanderful27!

My PS4 just got way more useful

  • Jl

Wow, so many things are closing down at Sony. It looks like this is the beginning of the end lol

  • Rene Pedroso

Canceled my Music Unlimited over 6 months ago, it was awful (I guess Sony finally figured it out that they don’t know what they are doing). It makes sense because Spotify is one of the streaming / online services that get’s it right). The re-branding is a great move in my opinon. I don’t think the Playstation Video will do any better if Sony is just re-branding, My XZ3 & XZ3TC supports HD but when you rent from VU you can only rent in SD. DUMB.

  • Tjaldid

Music Unlimited was powered by Omnifone they are just switching partners, and the layoffs will really only lead to fewer phone models 1 Z instead of 2 etc

  • Sooo dramatic…

  • Tjaldid
  • Khaled

Thats the first time I heard that MU was powered by omnifone!! So I guess Playstation Music will be similar to MU but with more intelligent engine and brand New UI?… Honestly the only reason I am using music unlimited is because of the Walkman app in my xperia!

  • Clarence Alvarado

Why not in a Walkman branding? I hope it will be integrated in the Walkman app soon. Imagine Spotify powered PS music integrated in Walkman app! That’s best of both worlds!

  • gtop

Powered by Spotify it should also have a better catalogue, better functionality (recommendations and playlists) and be available in more countries. It also sounds like the Walkman integration will continue. This could be a positive thing, let’s see … but we don’t know the price yet. If Sony has any sense they’ll do a massive promotion – 6 months/1 year free with a new Xperia purchase, say?

So now we have Xbox Music/Video and Playstation Music/Video to choose from, who would have thunk it.

  • Khaled

Also social media and playlist share with friends!! I’m really excited about ththis..I think that service will cost $9.99/month with access to Spotify native app as well

So what’s next about Video Unlimited? Sony will partner with Netflix and change its name to PlayStation Video?

  • Rick N

It’s a big news saving 10$/month for spotify

  • John Wick

That’s too much music app, people will confuse

Walkman means hi-res music player for audiophiles so I think it’s better to left it alone while nowaday PlayStation brand is more popular and stronger than walkman, Sony partner with Spotify and re-branding their online music service is such a clever decision

I also support them to merge Walkman app into PlayStation Music as well because the sound quality of Walkman is in Xperia devices ain’t great as Walkman player then there’s no reason to use Walkman name with Xperia devices

Merging Walkman app into “PlayStation Music” app is very make sense, same as Apple iTunes and Goole Play Music that customers can listen mp3 and lossless files or streaming music in one place, anytime, anywhere (of course customers can use offline mode) that’s a pretty smart idea and more easier to listen music, easier to remember!

  • MarkG54321

Except after using google music all access (or the free one), Spotify seems rather naff..

  • RK18

So does this mean Spotify will be integrated into Walkman?! :D

  • jonoave

A bit sad at this as I was a subscriber to MU. The reason I stick with it was its superior audio quality compared to Spotify (Google All Access is close to MU).

One of the main reasons MU didn’t take off is because of the horrible app – it’s unstable. The last update made it a bit quicker to load, but it still crashes often requiring a force restart. Also, the catalogue was unstable. Songs would be delisted randomly and albums can disappear (but appear as individual songs).

If Sony had fixed the app to work properly and promoted it better (looking at the comments, many doesn’t even know MU exist), it could have taken off. And Sony could have promoted MU better by offering better promotions among Sony users, not just to Playstation owners.

  • Okazuma

PsMusic allow you to listen Music and playlists powered by Spotify during the gaming sessions.
Video Unlimited, simply change name in PsVideo

  • sommarkatt

    The app or the gadget?

  • sommarkatt

I hope this means that I’ll be able to listen to offline Spotify playlists on my SW3 pretty soon.

  • Snorky112

lol yea and sony will go bankrupt

  • Snorky112

    SW3 ?

  • Snorky112

    that’d be great

  • RK18

The app. It looks nice enough, and seeing as it is made specifically for Xperia’s ROM it should work even better than the stock Spotify app.

  • John Wick

Just get rid of Walkman app and replace it with new music player app called “PlayStation Music”

One perfect place for music lovers that can play mp3, lossless files and streaming anywhere, anytime whenever you need the music

How? I think if Sony partner with Netflix for PlayStation Video it will make Sony more stronger than ever

Apple, Google and Microsoft will more afraid of Sony!

  • rvjaywaks

then it will available here in the Philippines. :)

  • DanielGearSolid

Pretty sure there isnt a free version of google music

i’ve used both services an G music is a pain in the ass in comparison.
    (Atleast on mobile)

Songs stop playing randomly,at times you have to tap a song multiple times for it to play, the queue doesn’t play the songs u add to randomly

  • sommarkatt

Sony SmartWatch 3! You can store music on the watch in order to listen without carrying the phone with you, but since it isn’t compatible with Spotify or other streaming services you have to download mp3 _files_ to your phone and then sync them with the watch using the Walkman app. Pretty tiresome work.

  • jag

Don’t ged rid of Walkman please. Just integrate it with the app like what they did with music unlimited last time.

  • Bunny

oh mo. I love Spotify and SONY <3

I for one am glad that sony is consolidating its departments. Less is more. I rather have fewer polish products with more focus and more attention than a large array of sub par products only a couple being polished. Also for me this hits my two most used sony products (Playstation & Xperia) Im still on a LG TV, i do love the bravia line but they are out of my budget usually.

  • At least Music Unlimited was available in this country where I work, unlike Spotify…

  • Timel

Why Sony have to keep Walkman App?

Walkman app has nothing special, blind fanboy like you gotta stop lying yourself then wake up and smell the coffee this time.

Walkman app is pure shit its mess UI is fugly and its sound quality is pure shit too.

Walkman app never comes close to the real Walkman player, Walkman app never give a real Walkman experience or Walkmanness to music lovers except its name, Walkman app is just a maketting hype, it is just a lie. There’s no reason to keep it

Only stupid fanboys that still stick with Walkman app

  • Timel

This is a nightmare of Xbox Music LoL

  • Kaarthikeyan Swaminathan

The idiot come to fart again

  • Timel

I can’t help it, I just love Sony so much it hurts when I think about it.

  • jag

  • Apoorv Deshmukh

    The material design!

  • Sam!

    ive added screenshots!!

  • RHBH

I’m also expecting that they keep providing us an option to listem stream/offline music from Spotify in WALKMAN App for Xperia.

  • jag

Really? I’ll try to check the other OEM’s default music players then see if the xperia’s are the pure shit ones.

And how about the new update for walkman? What do you think about the new screens of Walkman App with Material Design? Tell us if it still looks pure shit for you so we could try to comment/ suggest it in the support forum.

  • goldenblls

This is not a good sign. I’m worried for the Walkman and Xperia brands.

  • goldenblls

    You’re so backward.

  • Ritwij

  • xperiaDROID

    Typical paid shill attitude,

    – Calling people a “blind fanboy”

    – Telling people to “wake up and stop lying yourself”

    – Bashing a company’s product with words like “shitty, fugly” blah blah blah…

    – Repeating the same thing on every sentence, for example:
    “Walkman app is pure shit…
    Walkman app is shit…
Walkman app is shit…” blah blah blah…

Shit shit shit shit, your brain is shit. The Walkman app is Sony’s only music app for their mobile devices, you dumb twat. We get it, Samsung paid shill. You don’t settle for good, you demand shit.

New update rolling out for walkman with material design style

  • I wonder if that also means that Spotify will finally enter Japanese market (by replacing MU).

  • Peitso90

Well at least not initially. This was the list of countries mentioned in the official Playstation blog: “The PlayStation Music featuring Spotify launch markets are as follows: Andorra, Austria, Australia, Belgium, Brazil, Bulgaria, Canada, Chile, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hong Kong, Hungary,
Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, Malaysia, Malta, Mexico,
Monaco, New Zealand, Netherlands, Norway, Peru, Poland, Portugal, Singapore,
Slovakia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Taiwan, Turkey, UK and USA”

  • Diogo Simões

    Much bigger now

  • RealityCheck2015

Oh GOD…will we see a new type of Fanboy War now??? i.e PlayStation Music Fanboy Vs Xbox Music Fanboy…”My Music is better than your Music” etc etc LoL:D

  • Well :)

  • Jacopo
  • OK thanks ;)

  • Good job Sony, good job :D

  • jonny

spotify is just the best :)

  • goldenblls

Qobuz is better. You can stream in lossless.

  • doraemonboi

I think it will be better for them! Without Video Unlimited and Music Unlimited, they can better spend the resource on something else. I am sure that they need money to maintain both the Video and Music Unlimited which no one uses.

  • Lunkz

Yeah, I’m also not a Fan of Google Music, back then it was better.
After they Updated it to death, I switched to PowerAmp, I don’t like stream services for Music, I buy the Songs that I like. Also the Mobile Traffic is limited in Germany, and is very expensive if you want more than 1GB per month.

  • djsilentg

I bet Sony had money and resources invested in spotify all along

  • Khillo81

As a subscriber to Music Unlimited, I’m a bit disappointed. However, if the new service (especially the UI), will be better than the MU, I’m in. The Android app is horrendous! I can’t believe that Sony would make a nice app for iOS but not for Android. Also, I hope they make it easy for people to transfer their accounts to PSM (I have a huge library on MU and don’t want to have to start all over again). The positive side would be the availability of the Spotify catalogue (MU selection is good, but they have some major holes in their collection). Also, as others mentioned, I hope Sony integrates the new service in their Walkman app. The picture is still unclear, and until Sony come out with a concrete plan, I will reserve judgement.

  • jonoave

I’m a bit sad to see it go as well, as a current subscriber. I chose MU over Spotify as MU offers better audio quality, despite the problems that you mentioned.

It’s also sad that I just got the Xperia Z3 end of last year to get the Walkman/MU integration and now MU is being discontinued. I don’t use Playstation, so I don’t care about Spotify integration with PS. I’ll reserve judgement as well, but most likely I’ll go with Google All Access (which have almost similar audio quality with MU).

And btw, I wouldn’t hold my breath on keeping my music library. That’s one of the things MU always has trouble with, when you add/delete stuff from your library. Migrating the entire library to Spotify? I wouldn’t bet on it.

  • Utsav Shah

One of the best move by Sony recently!

  • materialisok

mobile data is getting very expensive everywhere!

  • amirali

This sounds awesome, but I wonder what will happen to my kdl50w815, will it receive a update from music unlimited to Spotify? Probably not..

Finally. I’ve been subscribed to spotify for ages and never considered switching to Sony’s service even though I’m brand loyal (with smartphones that is). What I really hate is the fact that I don’t get to use my Walkman app anymore since all my music is offline cached with spotify. I hope they merge or spotify let me access my playlist from Walkman app.

Makes me wonder though, does anyone still carries around that famous mp3 filled micro card. I should really look for mine, the oldies are in there. :o

Also, being able to play music over the f@#$ing annoying minecraft music on my PS4 would ROCK!

  • AlexFirth91

Just a bit mad I didn’t cancel earlier, but I already have spotify with the college discount. I look forward to the new integration.

  • Ram Kumar Krishnamurthy

Did anyone link their music unlimited/playstation music account with spotify account?
