Front panel of Xperia Z4 leaks (again)

by XB on 4th February 2015

in Rumours, Xperia Z4 and Z3+ series

Xperia Z4 front panel_1The pictures you see below are supposedly of the Sony Xperia Z4 front panel. The leaked pictures, from an account on Weibo, show a very similar-looking front panel to the current flagship line and highlight that design-wise, not much will change with the Xperia Z4 i.e. OmniBalance is still very much prevalent.

Of course, this is not the first time we have seen the front panel of the Xperia Z4. The pictures below match the previous leak of the same components back in mid-November 2014. The part shows that the front-facing camera and proximity sensor have swapped places when compared to the Xperia Z3.

It also shows that Sony will go back to the stereo speaker placement as previously seen on the Xperia Z2, towards the edges of the top/bottom. This speaker placement also matches the only render seen so far from the Bond product pitch email leak.

    Ow.. nothing new ;(
I expected something more creative and with less bezel..

  • Badnad

    How original

  • Jumbo

People complain this and that when we don’t even know if this is the X4 yet… also, with how phones are like nowadays, what else can they do to make a breakthrough?? (rolls eyes)

  • Kabuto Kouji

OMG!! thats great design and innovation!!!! cheers SONY!!! (gotta be kiddin…)

  • David Hvatov

Why change something that is already perfect?
Btw this will be my ideal Z2 replacement, because I like design of Z2 very much!

  • Simon

Pretty much a Z2 with thinner bezels

  • Tasfique Enam

sony we don’t care… give me my lollipop

  • doraemonboi

Those bezzlesssssss. Hopefully this is just the prototype and not the final design.

  • Kabuto Kouji

    yeah right…prototype..

  • Faisal Armand

    For those complaining about bezels

  • Nawi

Why the don’t use again the Xperia ZL front? (sexy and very compact)

In that empty space they could put the sexy LED bar =(

  • sd2

Its not bad… Z2 reloaded :))) very good sony. So.. The z2….4 its release in march?

  • Kabuto Kouji

on Z: notification led traditional DOT
on Z1: ok forget the dot lets innovate
on z2: continue inovating but improoving!!
on z3: no,no,no lets go back to the DOT!!
on z4: Hmm… lets better bring back the hidden notification led again….
    WTF!!!

  • Ado Kanashii

    hahahaaa truue!

  • Kiwison

If they release lollipop for other models before Z3 I’d be so pissed of.. And we all know that the first release will be buggy until a second maybe third firmware

  • Flavio Lemos

sony just release the kraken ops i mean android 5.0!!!

  • Diogo Simões

We can’t forget the camera sensors and the waterproof speakers

  • Vuyo Ncube

If you are more worried about bezels than battery capacity, camera sensor size and hardware, structural toughness and durability, ingress protection and audio hardware, congratulations. Your head is up your ass.

  • hansip

With All Lollipop bugs, honestly i would wait for 5.1 if ever.

  • Joachim Nilsson

Let’s just bring back the the ZL line! =)

  • hansip

To be Honest, without thinking dimensions, such bezel is actually the beauty factor of Omnibalance design. If you compare z3 and z3c, one can see that z3 is more elegant even though it’s bigger Than z3c With narrow bezel.

  • BruceLeeRoyJenkins

I have a feeling Sony is going with a, “refined Z3 look.” Meaning no aluminum backing, and a MWC release instead of later in the year. There’s a reason everyone likes the designs of HTC, and even Apple. They change it up, and provide a substantially better looking device that tops it’s predecessor. (More HTC than Apple)

However, at this angle, you can’t really tell the size of the screen unless there was something to compare it to within the picture itself. IT COULD BE, a Z4 Ultra panel. But without anything to reference the size to we won’t know for sure.

  • BruceLeeRoyJenkins

Honestly the speakers placement does look a lot better than what I currently have on my Z3. If Sony ditched the glass back and went with a different material, maybe matte finish like their tablets or even aluminum it would make the Z4 much more promising. Certainly help overlook those annoying bezels that shrink ever so slightly each flagship release.

Japanese companies are known for great, high quality products. With a futuristic and breathtaking design, which helps with the huge price tag. I have no doubt the Z4 will be “better” than the Z3, but in all honesty what’s the difference.
    Specs? sure.
    Design? A little.
But other OEMs are actually trying to survive against the onslaught of Apple, Samsung and soon Xiaomi. Sony isn’t pulling any punches by sticking with the slowly changing design.

  • Nawi

They should preserve the best of each model :/
See above the comment of led evolution place and form

  • Tasfique Enam

Lollipop 5.1 just announced for Android One, before Sony implements it on their phone it will take more 4 months.

  • BruceLeeRoyJenkins

I love that Cylon-like notification light. The Oppo Find has a fusion of that type of notification with the Xperia SP illuminating bar.

  • BruceLeeRoyJenkins

Agreed, I rather have stable Lollipop running on my Z3 than something that could compromise battery life or any other features. But with such a long wait there had better be some overhaul.

I like TimeScape, but the darker stock UI does get a little annoying. None of us want that gushy sounding UI that Samsung and LG use, but something needs to change

  • BruceLeeRoyJenkins

B… But the bezels is a mm shorter -_-

  • shanefalco

this is z2 and not z4…too much bezels (up and down). I hope this is NOT z4!

  • Jacky

I have the ZR right now I personally think it has the most attractive notification LED (z2 ranks second on my list :D)…i wish they’ll have it on the z4 compact

  • Fynjy7771

Great if so! Because dot notification led is extremely standart, boring, even cheap-looking. I like very much notification led in Z2: it’s beautifull, innovative and premium-looking. In Z1 there is the same kind of led, but in Z2 the led strip is narrower and longer that’s why Z2 has the best notification light among Xperia smartphones, imo.

  • boo

    BORING sony

  • Amir

Who said the notification led will not be embedded on the top speaker? since they went back to z2 design the led may also return to the top speaker! don’t you think? it makes sense.

  • roeshak

In other words they’re returning to the z2’s design philosophy. Thank goodness! Hopefully we’ll get a display also like the z2s but improved and not the cold nonsense that came with the z3.

  • Nawi

    Good news.

“Sony sells 12 million Xperias in Q4, smartphone division swings to profit

Sony’s smartphone business logged an operating profit of $80 million last quarter, as it sold 12 million handsets by simplifying and refreshing its product lineup. Compared to 8.8 million sold in the same quarter a year before, or 9.9 million during the summer quarter, Sony demonstrates good solid growth in the mobile department”

    http://www.phonearena.com/news/Sony-sells-12-million-Xperias-in-Q4-smartphone-division-swings-to-profit_id65568

The problem of Sony is low and medium models (M, E, T).
Sony needs to focus on family Z only. That is the way

  • BruceLeeRoyJenkins

It’s the Z2’s front panel, with the Z3 body. To expect something different would make no sense.

Sony isn’t taking a huge leal with the design, just like there other flagships it’s a slow evolution and change, but the more rounded feel of the Z3 makes it more comfortable and helps screen reachability which is plagued by those big ass bezels.

I like and support Sony’s flagships, but there’s a reason why myself, and a large portion of people here would easily jump to HTC if or even when Sony shits their Xperia line down

  • BruceLeeRoyJenkins

They are still going to layoff more employees

  • Lunkz

They should keep the speaker led. The point looks stupid and is mostly not noticeable.

  • Nawi

Obviously, since they will focus on fewer products (Sensors and Xperia Z Flaghship)

  • zeoxzy

So glad they’ve returned to the xperia z2 design. I wouldn’t swap my z2 for any other phone right now

  • Guest

Give Sony some credit. They do more with each iteration design wise than Samsung or HTC. The S6 will be identical to the S5 and S4 and S3, etc. and the M9 will look like the identical triplet of the M8 and M8.

  • roeshak

Jump to htc? What to fuck around with nonsensical cameras??
You are on your own with that one. I’m not in this for premium build materials, I’m in it for devices that are well rounded and balanced excelling in all areas not metal phones with silly cameras

  • BruceLeeRoyJenkins

I also think it’s to help save more money. Sony has never been too good with their mid and low range devices, so hopefully they can do a whole lot better now that they’re going to be more focused. Certain ideas were good, the Xperia SP, but like their other mid range devices, almost 0 support for updates and a high price tag for the mid range specs killed them.

  • azzido

I do not know if I will buy it… I am simply bored with this design and UI… still the same, nothing new… At least still hoping for glass Arc back :(

  • Luxsaan06

    Lollipop

  • Alex Norris

Yes.. Sony designers are very hard worked on a new design ))) Again we see another Copy-paste. They cant do sexy design like this http://cs621822.vk.me/v621822816/e1d0/PDYXa3VeXEM.jpg

  • BruceLeeRoyJenkins

“On my own”, amongst the other 200+ readers here. HTC has better build, certainly IP rating would make it better, but they have shown growth in their UI and build. The Xperia line looks so alike in a lot of aspects, some changes but nothing as substantial as HTC or Apple. You may not agree with how they look but you’re one person versus the thousands that do buy HTC and Apple phones over Sony.

The camera is where HTC is so stupid it’s not even funny. But the M9 looks to change that. And if the rumors for using the Sony 20.7 MP sensor with a 13 MP or 4 MP Ultra pixel front camera are true then the M9 will be a beast of a phone. Software plays a huge part in the camera, and Sony hasn’t really nailed it. Sony has the great hardware but the software isn’t up to par. Many can say, “That’s because they don’t know how to use it”, or something to that affect. True, but what makes the other OEMs cameras better, software wise, it that’s it’s stupid easy to take good shots. Point, press what you want to focus in and click.

  • Tasfique Enam

2 year old Galaxy S4 got Lollipop. here i am with a Z3 which was released 4 months ago. still pending with the update… This is why sony is in loss… -_-

  • roeshak

Well you guys are on your own with htc. They’re at the bottom of my list. I buy a smartphone to use its features and not just to look and feel it.
Nokia would be the choice for me but windows mobile is too big a leap so Samsung it would have top be despite the dreaded touchwiz

  • Niels d. G.

Better yet, let’s wait for Android Marshmallow.

  • BruceLeeRoyJenkins

You spend all that money, you want to feel and see your money’s worth. Every OEM fucks something up, for me, because Sony releases flagships so often and overall they are so alike it’s hard to really get excited and want to spend my money and time on them.
HTC screwed up, not once, but twice on its crap camera, and hopefully the can rectify that with the M9. Samsung has Touchwiz which is a huge mix bag of reviews, but rumors point to a much less bloated version on the S6. Nokia or Microsoft has a UI that isn’t as polished as Android or iOS, but they do have some great optics, the are even going for more premium design and materials.

  • Luxsaan0611

I got the Z3 on the first day at 9am when cpw opened their store on that day, I previous I had Sony Z1C n Z and before that SE phones. And I’m going to get the Z4 on the first day. Google have stated it only has 1.6% of Android running lollipop and i’m sure Samsung have more thn 10% android smarthphone which are S4 n S5 thn how come only 1.6% is running lollipop….and the 1.6% is coming from Nexus phones and LG G3

  • Tasfique Enam

dude the update started few days back.

  • Macnair

And I’m just waiting here for a Z Ultra successor… 6.4 screen with the same specs as Z4 with a larger battery.

  • Kenny Cornwell

age of the phone doesn’t matter. Lollipop has a ton of bugs right now, bugs that obviously Sony doesn’t want on their phones, otherwise the Z3 would have it. When lollipop is running up to Sony’s standards then they’ll push it to the Z3.

  • Kenny Cornwell

not to mention the top and bottom bezels make the phone more comfortable to hold in landscape

  • Kenny Cornwell

less bezel? what’s wrong with the bezel?

  • hansip

Based on previous leak, it should be around the same size of Z3. Plus the proximity/frontcam hole is quite big compared to screen, indicating that it can be smaller than Z3 by 0.1inch.

  • hansip

To be Honest, without thinking dimensions, such bezel is actually the beauty factor of Omnibalance design. If you compare z3 and z3c, you can see that z3 is more elegant even though it’s taller Than z3c With narrow bezel.

  • hansip

Z2 LED light is beautifully enough to reuse IMHO rather than sacrificing speaker for LED light

  • Stephen

sony should be concentrating on getting lollipop released for the z3 series

  • Kenny Cornwell

I’m 100% certain the team designing the Z4 is entirely separate from the team porting lollipop to the z3. sony is concentrating on both.

  • kaostheory

Easy to use Google camera, so what if you need to load one more app. Without water and dust proofing (I’ve killed all my phones from dust and destroyed my USB also from dust) it makes the “build” crappy and needs extra protection. I like Oakley because of the way their stuff looks but would never say that they have a great build.

    fake, i think.

  • hio

    It isn’t beautiful
Too big top and bottom bezels make the phone becomes too long

actually Sony fans don’t want Bezel-less but they want small bezel, something like Xperia ZL.

  • Strig

Sony should merge Sony Mobile with mother company

  • Kabuto Kouji

yeap i totally agree!!! the DOt is boring and i think thats why they changed it on the xperia Z design, but then why did they went backwards on the Z3 ??? fucking stupid designers, if you go 2 steps forward DONT go one step Backwards!!

  • LUMIA

Lollipop, I still can wait for it
But all I want is the new design and small bezel

I want something futuristic look and feel, something like this

    http://geekongadgets.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/01/lumia_1530_by_sujau-d8d0bik.jpg

  • Kabuto Kouji

on Z4: Hmm… lets better bring back the hidden notification led again….
WTF!!! i actually think it will be on the speaker on z4 dude, my question is that if u have already putted ther on the Z1 why return to the damm dot on the Z3!?? was that really necesary?

  • mariozlp

Having the same design so far, makes my xperia Z look like new. A few ppl understand its the first of its line.

  • zymo

I’m currently using a Nexus 4 running 4.4.4. I could upgrade it immediately to 5.0.1 but I don’t do it. Why? Cause Lollipop is full of bugs and I don’t want to get mad dealing with a crappy unfinished OS.

  • Fynjy7771

Well, Z3 came out very close to Z2, by the time there was no serious improvements in hardware, but Sony had to make some changes (not even improvements) otherwise there was no reasons in Z3. And, of course, design was the first thing to “come under fire” (standart dot notification light, “iPhone” speakers, ugly inserts in corners – all those thing shows, that designers/engineers were in hurry, maybe even in panic)) ). The second thing, by the way, was the screen temperature (about 10 000 K, as I remember) – it increases the max brightness, but reduces colour accuracy, making colours too cold and unpleasant to an eye (Z2 has about 6 000 K – and that’s the best Xperia screen so far, imo).
So, I’m glad, that Sony is leaving 6-month cycle right now.

  • nane

hope they use the z3 tablet compact back, feels more premium
also they should hurry up the damn lollipop, fk 5.1

  • asd

    z3 frame is even better.z2 frame is a junk,had z2 and sold it after 2 mont’s.could not stand that bad plastic,every drop,cause a sign on the border…z3 even better,no marks in 4 mont’s,even if I drop it few times!!!no more plastic,just metal!

  • webusermy

I myself am a user of the Z2, and I much prefer the dot on the Z3. Z2’s notification LED isn’t that clear to view in most circumstances.

I’m not saying I do not want Sony to innovate, but if you are trying something different, make sure it does not affect the functionality first.

  • Kabuto Kouji

Im z2 user too but i just cant agree with u dude, z2 notification light is beautifull and elegant never had any isues with it

  • sony

i wonder why xperiablog is late in reporting the quarter-end result of sony.

  • webusermy

When looking directly straight at the phone, it looks fine, but you must remember, the pure functionality of the notification LED is so that it can alert you without you having to even look at the phone. With the dot, I can see the LED notification light even if the pone is at the corner of my eyes. With the Z2, I have to actually look at the phone to see if I missed anything. This gets worse when the phone is not sideways.

Sit down at your desk, and lay your phone just over 1 feet away from your body in the portrait orientation. I find it hard to notice the notification at all in this setting, which, defeats the purpose of it if you can’t even notice it.

  • Ethan ‘blaze’ Parker

Bravia range won’t be updated. It’ll be new products totally.

  • Ethan ‘blaze’ Parker

Get your eyes checked. I notice my Z2’s notification LED always, unless its white.

  • yuskhayru

this screen panel look the same as Z2.

  • AudioInjectedSoul

Will the touch sensitivity still short circuit if the display gets a crack? I’m not going back to Sony until I know a small crack won’t render my phone unusable like what happened on my previous xperias..

  • AudioInjectedSoul

Lollipop is great guys. Had it on my htc one m8 for a while now. Trollollol :D

  • webusermy

A video is worth a thousand words:
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3lgfXU7E-E8

Just only taken. Notice how it disappears once your viewing angle dips low enough? That will never happen on a traditional dot LED.

  • Billy de Fretes

Most of commentators only see so called big bezzel but they just stupid to acknowledge that since Z2, no smartphone have better battery than Xperia phones.what’s the point of having slim bezzel but 6 hours or less battery power? please tell me a phone that can surpass Z3 Compact & Z3 but with super slim bezzel

  • shubham

ya so they fired the design team or sent them on vacation! for once they couldn’t keep up with what they said at MWC 2013!

  • Afzal Zainal Rddz

I think omnibalance is a good layout for sony internal hardware. But since sony already moving to per-year flagship maybe it about time finding another design that will fit all the hardware component.

  • shoo

Then you’re better off with a Lumia. Sony’s design was never about futuristic, but class.

  • Standart

    LOL!

  • DOT

    http://static.xperiablog.net/wp-content/uploads/2014/11/Xperia-Z4-Touch-Digitiser_2-640×640.jpg

Naww, the Z4’s gonna have dot LED too.

    …because, fUncTiO//!!

  • JiaWei

I really don’t see what’s so good about screen sizes getting bigger and bigger. My hand is only so big, a 5″ screen is all it can handle…If only Sony made a Z sized Z4 like a Z4 compact that had a 1080p screen resolution.

  • Mr. Xperia Z2

I wish that after lollipop update the camera would get its smoothness back. Did they drop the fps like a half?

  • Nawi

You are true. Moto Maxx only, but is very ugly.

  • Steven Khoo Skkl

    Yep.. I can tell apart a z3 from z2, z1 and z and vice versa…. But I can’t tell apart and iPhone 5 and 4 or s5 and s4/s3 or g3 to g2 or HTC 1 m8 to m7..
My point is. you’ve seen one phone model from other manufacturers, then you have seen them all..but not for Sony though.. Enough changes to recognise and differentiate

  • Ali G

This is not Z4! This is Z3v…

  • cleverthansony

wtf is that top and bottom bezels??? sides are good but still ugly top and bottom bezels. z3 compact forever…

  • Kenny Cornwell

But all the Xperia z phones look great, I’m unaware of any android phone that looks better than the z3. Why change a design that is iconic and doesn’t need changing?

  • BruceLeeRoyJenkins

Maybe change the materials. The design is good, but something needs to change. Either more innovative or a more futuristic design that we all know Sony can do.
Most sites and reviews will always mention how the Z1 to Z3 look alike, and are “hard to tell apart.” It has improved, but not as much as their competitors. Sony has great design prowess, but if they stay with the same design language a material change can definitely change up the feel and overall “identity” that is the Omnibalance design language

  • LUMIA

    Which is fucking boring…. So

Xperia devices get bored because Sony do nothing new with them, I think this is the time to change, please let the Xperia Z4 be the new beginning.

  • zeoxzy

Maybe buy a case for it? I’ve had to problems with the z2 thus far. Not too mention the in my opinion the z3 design is a step backwards

  • Shravan SP

Me too ZR user here ;)
It’s neither sooo biig like the SP or small like the Z1/Z.. I love it!

  • Shravan SP

Oh dudes!! While ppl are seriously discussing about the processor/camera/IP/cost, you people are discussing about the LED DOT! Seriously?? -_-

  • Krasi Monev

Are you kidding me right now !!!! This is same like xperia z1,z2 and z3 they make same phones every year, sony you need updating you phones! Fingerprint, better camera and more things. Why you making same phones all the time!!!

  • Kabuto Kouji

Bro, have u ever heard, “details matter” its one of sony s prefered words man, i bet u have cause ur name ends with “SP” right? Well thats the coolest led bar i have ever seen dude..

  • Kabuto Kouji

    Man i totally agree!!!!!

  • Fynjy7771

Yes, but this is from this side and from the big angle: usually, when the phone lays near to me on a table that I seat, I easily can see led even from this side. I have to put my had close to a table to lose it from my veiw. And from the left, right and opposite side you can see it from any angle, like with a dot.
Led strip has a big advantage: it is brighter than dot, so in darkness you can easily notice led not even looking at the phone, cause it lights objects around. Moreover, when Z2 lays screen down, light from led breaks through the gap at the top side of the phone, I doubt very much that it is possible with dot. By the way, these gaps allow Z2’s speakers to sound great when the phone lays screen down, while Z3’s speakers are closed. That’s why for me Z3’s speakers and notification light is a big step backwards.

  • WellWisher

    Ohhh(… That’s very bad =
But your photo is from last year leak, on photos in actual article there is no hole for dot LED. Perhaps, Sony changed it’s mind about it and in Z4 will be LED strip, like in Z2? I very hope so…

It is an Android not some sucked up windows phone. It is customize able and u can change the themes any freaking way u want. Android FTW

  • Bur

I still have this problem with my Z3compact led…. when I look at the phone in a particular angle (very extreme angle) I wont be able to see it

  • Nete88

bs “we don’t care” i want a z4 tablet to read comics in the tub with lol

  • Rene Pedroso

I think if Sony used a Carbon Fiber panel for the back and corners (this would make the Z weigh less and be thinner) and use Tungsten for the frame (this would add some weight to the Z but no scratches, look new forever). I think the combination of the two would meet that material change

  • Matt

Well if you’re so good then just send your application to Sony, they might hire you. The fact is the z3 is here and it is brighter than the z2 which is struggling under direct sunlight. Yes the color temp is messed up but you can always mend it with Sony white balance set to, stop nitpicking. Nobody running around with screen tester while buying a phone,do you? Why is AMOLED really popular? Because the color pop, Sony try to replicate that so that they can(it might be come as a shock) SELL PHONES.
The company will never win against you lot. If I read though xperia blog all the people wants are these :

    =3 days battery live
    =SLR quality camera
= software update on day one
    = ultra high resolution display

The question is HOW? How Sony will do that all? Although maybe Sony should fix some things here and there but just admit Sony makes the most balanced premium phone out there.

  • WellWisher

Yes, it’s true, Z3’s screen is brighter than Z2’s, but there are a lot of people (incl. me) who would choose a pleasant colour temperature over super brightness, it is very subjective. Anyway, I hope that Sony will find compromise in their new ips-neo technology. And, by the way, I like very much saturated colours of Sony’s “live colour led technology”.
I admit Sony (and especially their premium (really premium) smartphones) very much, no doubt, but the problem is that they made people fall in love with their individual features, and then in Z3 they suddenly changed them for some usual things (dot led, iPhone speakers).
If photos in this article are really those of Z4, than Sony is getting back on right (individual and stylish) track, and they already don’t need someone like me to hire: seems like I missed my chance).

Ahh its really refreshing to have a rational discussion partner on the internet like you. I very much appreciate your opinion the screen though the only thing I can’t stand that people nitpick too much, that’s all. And I see your disappointment, if I pay 500€++ for a phone I will expect nothing less than perfection in every way, but still it’s nice of Sony to include white balance Tweaking utility. At the end of the day it come down to individual really, different strokes for different blokes I guess.

Don’t get me wrong I’m also rooting for Sony. Despite one or two flaw here end there I still think xperia devices are the nearest to smartphone perfection at least for me.

  • Xperiablogger

I think you’ll find is that this applies to all 3 brands. Samsung’s sales have slowed quite a lot and overall HTC sales aren’t that great either. Sony sales seems to be picking up and i think this is due to people choosing Sony over the other brands. While yes, people are choosing HTC and SS over Sony, i think the opposite is happening a lot more often.

  • Fynjy7771

    Thanks. I appreciate.

I would love if Sony did that. The ZL was great.

Here’s what Sony has to put in their Xperia Z4 Series:-
    Z4:-
    – Quad HD Screen – 5.4″
    – Snapdragon 810
    – 2.7GHz Processor
    – Adreno 420
    – Metal, Matte or possible Carbon Fibre back
    – Z1/Z2 Notification Light
    – Less bloatware
    – More features (Finger scanner/Retina Scanner etc…)
    – 21MP (20.7MP) camera with improvements (Superior Auto in 20.7MP, and 20.7MP has 16:9)
    – New or improved UI… The UI can get boring
    Z4 Compact:-
Same things apart from the size and resolution
    – 1080p Full HD Screen – 4.7″
    Z4 Ultra:-
    Same as Z4, but…
    – 6″ Screen
I have a friend who used to work in Sony when they were Sony Ericsson and he said that they were innovative and all, but they didn’t add updates to phones if it wasn’t even stable.
