Sony orders 3 million Xperia E4 handsets; more MediaTek-powered models expected in 2015

in Rumours, Xperia E4

Xperia E4Sony is ordering three million units of the Xperia E4 according to a Digitimes report. If true, it highlights that Sony has big plans for its budget handset – perhaps, this is also reflected in the budget price point.

The same report suggests that Sony Mobile will increase the number of entry-level and mid-range Xperia models running a MediaTek chipset during 2015. This is expected to include 4G LTE models running the MediaTek MT6752, a 64-bit octa-core system-on-chip.

Thanks Hendra!

Go Sony!! You deserve to be the number 1 in mobile share.

  • Kfkf

    Yuck! You disgust me Sony

  • Kiwison

    I actually didn’t like its shape :/

  • gmfady

.. good news, hope to BE MOVED Always Forward.

I think the doom of sony mobiles is near

It’s a good idea to give the experience of 64 bit android to the low budget people. It shouldn’t be criticised by them who are waiting for the flagship like me. It’s not for you guys and don’t forget that there are a lot of people who are not able to grab a flagship with 64 bit.

Kids nowdays cry for thier lollipop, back then they cry for thier kitkat. LOL!

It was only last November that Hiroki Totoki was saying: “We’re not aiming for size or market share but better profits […] Our urgent task is to make the business profitable even if we face declines in sales by 20% or 30%”.

So what happened to the strategy of making fewer phones with higher margins, even if that meant a drop in total shipments?

  • Jonfensu

I will leave that here ;) (I got this free)

  • Jerry Berglund

Increase? But what are they thinking. Cant they decide? I mean first they wanted top sell only premium-phones and stop doing entry-level and mid-range. And now they shall continue doing them. They losing money on those phones. SO what are they thinking about?

  • Sola Hoi

Looks like their previous strategy has been abandoned, now they are making a big gamble. Good luck!

is Xperia E4 on Snapdargon processor???

  • Sarfaraz Habib

accorging to me snsapdragon is best as on my Xperia E3 Dual D2212

  • Nope. Xperia E4 will be using the Mediatek chipset (even for LTE SKU) as stated above.

I will be getting Xperia E4 soon.

More features, support…etc Its why Qualcomm is a little more better than Mediatek but yeah, as we know its also why Qualcomm is more expensive and its why Sony have decided to use MT processor now. But in brief.. Mediatek is good too. For me, I’m okay for that Sony use MT processor on its enter and mid range phone but no in high range phone like Sony seems to have already decided.

Just saw a PhoneBuff-style speedtest of the MT6752 versus Snapdragon 615. The SD615…lost by 21 seconds and several apps. Did Sony just make the right choice?!

What About Mediatek Xperia C Any Updates

  • ozanyalcn45

Fuck you sony !!! ? am still waiting lollalipop update :(

  • Peter

I think im going to buy two of them for my parents. Looks like a really good value for 100£ and they really dont need anything better than that.

  • Peter

On a low/mid range phone for the masses, oh dear lord, such a big issue!

  • Quark Gluon

Interesting. What about the temperature and power consumption?

  • John

Have they gone mad!? I thought they were going to downsize their mobile division and focus on fewer higher quality models in each segment… Are they trying to dig Sony further into the hole!? They need to do what Motorola did, fix their software by throwing away the useless UI customizations, improve their software where it is more important (camera, audio, connectivity, apps etc) and deliver faster system updates…

  • laci_csk

    Motorola is dead.

  • Vuyo Ncube

It didn’t go into detail on temperature and power efficiency I think. It was in Vietnamese :(

  • John

Motorola isn’t dead! Motorola/Lenovo is now the third biggest smartphone maker despite not having a large range of phones to choose from and not selling in some markets yet…! The Moto G is considered the best in its price range and the Moto X although leaves something to be desired is doing pretty good due to the focus on other aspects of the phone other than the UI, which can be customized anyway using 3rd part launchers…! WAKE UP SONY! All Sony’s other division have learned their lesson and have stopped trying to compete where they can’t and instead partnered with others…
Sony Pictures has partnered with Marvel, Sony TV division with Google, Walkman targets niche, Playstation focused on games etc.
    Sony Mobile needs to focus!

  • ryq24

Sony may have seen the success of Asus zenphone and decided to come out with this phone.

  • jxPerience

if motorola range of smartphones are good seller, why the hell on earth google sold it to lenovo?

  • jxPerience

yeah and most of our parents don’t mind whats inside. i will buy for them as well

  • jxPerience

    i don’t need lollipop,

  • jxPerience

actually no need to release budget smartphones from sony. just focus on Z series and after releasing the next gen model make the previous one a cheaper one or 50% less than the normal price. Its a marketing strategy that will boost the sale of xperia in premium segment. and after 2 years discontinue to early model in the market

    1H2013 Z $740
    2H2013 Z $450 Z1 $740
    1H2014 Z $350 Z1 $450 Z2 $740
    2H2014 Z $250 Z1 $350 Z2 $450 Z3 $740
    1H2015 Z $225 Z1 $325 z2 $425 Z3 $650

and continue the trend every year. NO need to introduce new entry level. the previous Z alone can compete with its discounted price.

and make an offer like Xperia Premium Z Smartphones sale up to 50% from $225 and up.

  • John

For one Motorola wasn’t selling as much at the time and second Google had an issue at their hands considering competition with other Android OEMs…

  • Jaywalker

But have an option for those who want smaller display. 5″ is too big (bigger than 130 mm). I don’t want other people to see what I’m doing or reading. This price looks very attractive but let’s see the flaws and the material.

  • laci_csk

Motorola is dead believe me, and the Moto x is a bullshet, i dont want it. And in short time you dont hear just Lenovo.

  • Sarfaraz Habib

    Which one is best

  • I don’t know…

  • lol

    i more prefer E1 than E3/4.

  • lol

agreed, as long as they using old marketing strategies like nokia did 5 years ago

  • lol

    agreed, 4.6 inch

  • lol

asus has better camera even they using sony sensor

  • lol

the 1 they using in E4 rebranded SOC MT6582 launch back in 2013 while the modem using last year chip that support LTE release last year. the newer 1,

this year chip for midrange is MT6752. support 64 bit

what i can say about mediatek is their quadcore soc very effecient for energy consumption than qualcomm but qualcomm got upperhand for gaming and GPS

  • lol

anybody got kaz hirai FB or twitter???

we need to tell him just release only Z family.

Omnibalance design of the Xperia E4 refers to a symmetrical surface devoid of artifice, a bit like the monolithic design developed by Sony on these HDG products such as 920 or 950 HX series for TV, RX series for cameras.

  • wackenroader

    …for grilling

  • wackenroader

Mtk6752 is best to manage energy and battery, it is a heterogeneous processor true octacore (not big.little ) , MediaTek has a task scheduler called corepilot making the distribution processes in all cores . It will take some years to Qualcomm develop octacore processors as efficient as the MediaTek .
