Sony E23XX model appears in benchmark: 5.2-inch 720p display; 5MP front camera, 2GB RAM

by XB on 19th February 2015

in Rumours, Xperia M4 Aqua

Xperia logoWe have already seen the Sony E2353 model number crop up previously and now two variants of the same handset have made in appearance in CompuBench. This includes the Sony E2303 and Sony E2333 model numbers.

The specifications between the two differ in certain parts but the common features are a 5.2-inch (720 x 1280) display, 2GB RAM, 13MP rear camera, 5MP front-facing camera and Android 5.0 Lollipop.

The Sony E2333 was benchmarked more recently (4 February) and therefore may be more accurate. It suggests it will run the Snapdragon 610 chipset with 1.5GHz quad-core processor and Adreno 405 for graphics. It also points to 16GB internal storage.

The Sony E2303 that was benchmarked at the start of the year (12 January) highlights a Snapdragon 615 chipset with octa-core processor and Adreno 405 GPU. This prototype looks like it only has 8GB of storage.

It is extremely unlikely that both variants would sport different hardware, so the likelihood is that we are seeing different prototypes and sensibly the more recent benchmark probably gives a better indication of what we may see in the final version.

Sony E2333 CompuBench (benchmarked on 4 February 2015)

Android 5.0 Lollipop
5.2-inch 720p display

– Processor: 1.5 GHz quad-core Cortex-A53
– GPU: Adreno 405 GPU
Storage: 11GB post firmware (likely to be marketed as 16GB)

So this is going to be their mid range device? So they are going to announce mid range device during MWC? Any news regarding the Z4?

  • Vuyo Ncube

Pleeeeeease priced them both under $450! Samsung and HTC need an ass whooping for making their new midrangers all phablets. Also, dafuq is the SD615 phone doing with 4GB internal storage?!

  • Coolkid

If it had 16GB, it would’ve been AMAZING.. Still it has awesome spec… Want Sony to get back on game… Price will decide it’s fate…!!!

  • New movie app update for my xperiaZ c6603
    From Srilanka

  • spatch

I thought Sony was going to limit their device output in 2015. We’ve already seen the E4 this year, and from the benchmark leaks it looks like Sony is on track to release about 5 or 6 new low-end phones. With the Z4, Z4 Compact and Z4 Ultra, Sony looks likely to release up to 10 handsets in 2015.

    Really, Sony?? Really??

  • wintersoldier

New Lollipop Movie app for Download.

  • Arda Akca

Kaz and his bunch are ridiculous. I think shareholders should send him away and put someone like Chen on top.

  • Itsarapong Intoum

    SONY’s back. Let’s rock !!

  • Mokhtar Mouhib

This is ridiculous, Z4 SHOULD BE IN MARCH, a lot of people are waiting for it, even samsung and htc fans want to try the Z4, now with the s6 and m9 comes next month i think a lot of people will not wait for z4 until septembre, well done sony keep destroying ur self

  • BruceLeeRoyJenkins

Blah blah Chen this, blah blah blah Chen that. He revived Blackberry once haven’t seen a change yet since he took over last year.
If anything HTC is making the best comeback, and LG is pushing hard as well. You want someone else besides Kaz at least put someone who has changed something recently

  • Abdul Ghani

the better cpu phone had 4 gb internal lol 4 gb thats so gonna fail

  • Niels d. G.

    T4 ?

  • Vuyo Ncube

    1) Who said there was going to be a Z4 Compact/Ultra?

    2) 5 or 6 low-end phones, are you nuts?! So far I’ve seen one flagship (E6533), this midranger (E2333, E2303, E2353), the E4 (E2105, E2115), 64 bit Mediatek midranger (E2003, E2033) and a possible T2 Ultra or SP successor (E5333). No other rumoured handsets can be added for now and for all we know, Sony won’t make any new phones after this in 2015 and might rely on price cuts afterwards.

  • jxPerience

    it’s Sony Xperia T4 ;(
I thought they will focus on premium segment only, but why they want to flood the market again with useless models (E4, T4)?????

  • ZXcorr

I still don’t get how Sony is struggling, but LG, HTC and other small brands aren’t. Sony has got a very good product range and I see more people around me using Sony phones compared to the other brands I just mentioned.

  • Solaire of Astora

Since when is 720p SD610 2GB considered low end? The E4 is garbage, but this looks like the perfect phone if you want a good product at a good price.

  • so SNE remains in phones

  • Jaissal S

It’s quite funny that on Twitter and Facebook Sony Mobile are still advertising the Z3 range very well. I guess that have to before anything new is announced.

  • jxPerience

You’re right, actually this year ive seen lots of xperia user everywhere compare to 3-4 years back

  • jxPerience

  • Firdaus Araragi

sounds like an updated version of the selfie camera phone like the C3 >< hope the c3 gets lollipop though :)

  • roeshak

How did you come to the conclusion that htc is making a comeback. They’re by far of the major manufacturers, the worst performing commercially. Maybe come back to you is praise from techblogs lol. That’s a phony war Bro! The real battle is fought in the marketplace

  • Arda Akca

By the way BlackBerry wrote profit on Q3 2014. Look up before you talk nonsense.

  • Arda Akca

I think he meant that there should be compact and ultra instead of these phones. Seems reasonable.

  • Abbas Azimov

    T4 ???

  • Dan

Damn i think one for 3 new smartphone from sony will be Xperia SP 2 eh :(

  • Xperia_user

Storage = 4GB on the octa core version is bad !!

  • Shaktimaan

Hope it doesn’t get abandoned like the SP

  • I’m guessing it’s Xperia M3

  • RedGhost05

Great. Now just put a Moto G-like price and it would be the perfect phone!

  • shanefalco

oh my god i see xperia m4…screen too big for me…sorry!

  • FFF

  • xperiafan324

HTC’s also struggling terribly. Lg has a HUGE portfolio especially in the entry-level and the feature phone market, all priced competitively. No quality in those handsets, but they’re serious money makers. Sony on the other hand, only makes Android phones, and even then it has abysmal presence in the emerging markets (India, China, Neighbouring South and South-East Asia) and the US with negligible marketing drive.
Sony goes for quality, and rightly wants to charge a premium for that quality, but in most cases there are handsets with more features, which are cheaper, better, and usually with comparable battery life. But they’ve seemed to have learned their lesson last year, the 2015 portfolio is a lot better thought out.

  • kaostheory

Actually if Sony pulls on out of the hat and is able to get the 815 it would be worth the couple of months wait. Especially (reviews of the flex saying it gets hot) if the 810 is proven to have issues. The Z3 is still relevant enough.

  • BruceLeeRoyJenkins

Hmm, I guess making a profit and selling more phones than Sony and Blackberry isn’t a good thing then. I guess focusing more on delivering a better experience is also not good. I also guess that changing things up, improving on their current flagships instead of “tweaking” them isn’t good.

  • Tibo

    maybe it’s Xperia M3 or M4

  • BruceLeeRoyJenkins

And yet they are still far behind everyone else with a shit UI and chappy outdated phone specs and design. They might have the most secure mobile phones but they just can’t compete with Android, iOS, or even Windows

  • roeshak

Selling more phones than Sony??? Where on earth did you get that idea from. The posted $15.7 million profit in q4 of last year. Sony mobile posted over $80 Million. As for actual sales numbers, htc are the only major oem that don’t post those because they’re embarrassing comparing to the rest.
They’ve only got back to profit in the last few quartets because of various cost cutting measures and not increased sales.
If they had numbers they were proud of, they’d publish them like everyone else does!

  • BruceLeeRoyJenkins

HTC, for its pass two flagships, relied heavily on its design and BoomSpeakers. Camera was shit no matter what you did, but the UI was sleek and mature. Software for their camera is better than Sony in the M7 and M8, but that stupid UltraPixel crap held it back hard. If the new M9 has a better sensor then maybe they can actually compete, camera wise, with Sony and Samsung. Plus they have a better customer service, free cracked screen replacement for a year or two, and they delivered Lollipop already (as have most OEMs, but with a lot of bugs and lag).

LG sort of baffles me though. The G3, was great on paper. Again the camera software is better than Sony, but overall picture quality can’t touch the Z3 or Z2. That gimmicky laser auto focus sort of works but not when there’s a bunch of movement happening in the shot. I have no idea how PhoneArena thinks the G3 has a better camera than the Z3, software wise sure, but in Manual at 15.5 or 20 MP the Z3 is much better. Also there UI screams Touchwiz, no matter how much he you change the colors or icons.

  • BruceLeeRoyJenkins

    Site? Source?
Besides HTC is showing they want to change their business, where’s Sony? I want Sony to succeed but releasing these budget handsets won’t win them anything. They seem to do well in India but not so well in China. HTC has broken into almost every major market, Sony still has yet to fully announce a presence in the US. They have a few carriers, on Tmo and a watered down version on Verizon, but what about everyone else?

Sony says they want to do well with their mobile branch yet they don’t do anything. They don’t innovate, they don’t change things up and take chances. It’s hard to want a company as great as Sony to succeed when all their flagships were released so close, they all sport minor changes and in the end those minor changes don’t exceed or surpass their competitors.

Sony needs to really focus on their Xperia line if they want to succeed. Enough with the same glass and aluminum sandwich with an ever so slightly change. Enough with a great camera hardware with shit software.

  • roeshak

I don’t disagree with your criticisms of Sony and their approach to the mobile business. they sold 11.9 mmillion units in q4 of last year but I suspect that’s down to the very discounted xperia z2. At just over £300 here in the UK, it’s a steal. Still shocks me how the z3, a near identical sibling better in some ways but notably worse in others can cost over £170 more. It just shows the insanity that runs to the very core of Sony mobile and their crazed policies and practices.
My objection was using htc as an example. They’re total minnows in the game despite their more substantial presence.
Htc for me is a company much loved by the tech community but shunned by consumers. For the most part anyway and with good reason in my opinion!

  • BruceLeeRoyJenkins

HTC can succeed because mobile is their one big thing. Sony is many, and all fractured. They’re slowly bringing it together, but not fast enough. The One Sony idea, is something we’d all love to see happen. Each branch is great, but together they can be something else.

A lot of people have different opinions on who should be at the helm of Sony, really I just want the Xperia line to continue because they make one of the best handsets around, to a fault. I’m not saying Chen, or a John Legre should be in charge, nor am I saying keep Kaz in charge if Sony keeps exiting vital markets, like they did with Vaio, all I’m saying is put someone better. If Kaz does leave put someone better than Chen or Legre, someone who will preserver and find a way to turn things around. Because exiting the mobile market while relying on on camera sensors is a huge mistake for Sony. Sony makes and sells the most camera sensors by far, but Samsung will definitely start making their own in house sensors, and if Apple starts to produce their own then Sony will start losing business in that branch as well.

I’m not saying HTC is better than Sony. I have way more Sony devices than HTC for a reason. All I’m saying is that HTC is showing some real drive to bringing themselves back. Sony just needs that same drive. Once they have it, and start putting in the great software we all know they can make with their hardware then they can truly succeed. Also a new design could really help. Hopefully as Bond keeps filming well get some idea of what the Z4 will look like. Personally I’m hoping for less glass and more metal.

  • roeshak

Htc is a mobile company so they’ll persevere as long as they possibly can. Sony on the other hand have their fingers in many different areas. If the mobile business isn’t delivering profits on a regular basis then cutting it lose will always be an option.
Sony mobile have a real problem with strategy and they just aren’t consistent with their products. It’s always one step forward and another one backwards.
Take the z3 for example, it’s equipped with a poorer display than the z2. It’s brighter but very cold indeed to save power. Somebody at Sony mobile made the conscious decision that battery life was more important than display quality. Now what makes this judgement even more ridiculous is the fact the z2 already had great battery life. I could go into the camera performance as far as detail preservation goes but to be honest I just don’t give a gambling anymore. There are alternatives on the market that preform well in the round that I’ve given up waiting for Sony to sort this out. Another handicap of the xperia line especially since Sony took over.
Then you have the 6 month madness, endless stream of indistinguishable devices, slow software updates etc etc.
There’s a reason they’re struggling. You can’t blame the consumers, Sony just keeps needlessly messing up either here or there.

  • Arda Akca

Its all about the profits man. Rest is unnecessary.

  • BruceLeeRoyJenkins

Sony has the potential, the idea, the need/want to change, they just can’t execute

  • Rizky Maulana

    2 version of m2 sucssesor ? wew…

  • Gadget Lover

Phonearena is a paid whore site. Which ever company paid that site get better score.

  • BruceLeeRoyJenkins

Agreed, but I think Sony was found to have paid them as well. Either way the G3 does not have a better camera, and the fact PhoneArena has to release an article saying how dropping the screen resolution of the G3 from 4K to 1080p just highlights how bad, and how rushed LG was with the G3.

TheVerge is also the same. They live Apple above all else, Sony seems to get very little. Vlad, however, is different. He has said he’s a Sony fan and in his reviews anyone can tell he is a Sony fan, and that he wants the company to succeed. He doesn’t make excuses for the mistakes or flaws in Sony’s flagships he points them out and gives his general, unfiltered opinion. Unlike the other reviewers there.

  • Danny

since we know the E4 is sporting MediaTek CPUs, so is this the “M3”?

  • hSX

Sony needs innovator or engineer or Someone who know well about technology, science and maketting and Kaz isn’t that one.

  • Gadget Lover

Yeap, Vlad is my favorite writer in the verge. But Phonearena will do anything to earn money. Whether is to let trolls do whatever they want so that the traffic fo the site to increase or get paid by the companies. They tried to pretend that they are apple biased but that’s a just a smokescreen to hide their cheap nature.

  • Mokhtar Mouhib

No sir its not getting hot at all, actually they said in the g flex it runs cooler than 805, check the last news :)

  • Timel

U against phonearena just because they aren’t lick Sony’s balls like you and fanboys here did, that’s fucking shame, shame on you guys

I know it’s hard for you to admit the truth but c’mon… Sony sucks!

  • Mib

What’s the point in this since Xperia is now officially a sinking ship.?

But these devices give me a hint on the Xperia Z and ZL .
