Sony says no Lollipop for non-Xperia Z series owners

Android-5.0-LollipopSony Mobile hasn’t started to roll the Android 5.0 Lollipop update to Xperia Z series owners yet, but we get asked almost daily what the plan is for those who didn’t buy a Xperia Z series device last year. This includes the Xperia C3, E1, E3, M2, M2 Aqua, T2 Ultra and T3.

Sony has only ever formally communicated Android Lollipop plans for Xperia Z series owners, without even a mention for those using other handsets. Well the omens don’t look great as the official Sony Mobile twitter channel has started to tell owners of 2014 non-Xperia Z series owners that the Lollipop upgrade will be exclusive to Xperia Z owners only.

There is still some hope for non Xperia Z series owners though as the guys that run the social channels have not always been correct in the past. However, we noticed this Lollipop message being communicated in more than one tweet and given how definitive the message sounds, it all seems a bit ominous for non-Xperia Z owners.

Thanks Farooq!

  • i want lollipop for my Xperia T2 Ultra

  • now i hate sony

  • techielover

this is already the most predictable news for the non z series owners!

  • Why xperia E4 will get lollipop ? ,
and why Xpefia T2 will not get lollipop ?

  • Chaturanaga Manchanayake

Never getting it bro haha we all know what Sony does

  • Tim Rox Westerholm

You can still come here for Sony apps updates as you’ll receive them in the future! Still i don’t know if Sony update the Sony Ericsson apps any longer, or Xperia U (their [Sony’s] own very first lowend device) apps.

  • Keep calm n ? Sony Xperia :'(

  • Naresh Gundu

    #Facepalm.

  • Ali Bach-Tobji

Z series only !!! Really untill now it looks like no one will get lollipop !!! Except other brands

  • Taras Morales

There are neither lollipop for Z users…hahahahhahahha cmon sony

  • Fiiliip

    I’m confused.Will sony xperia z get lollipop?

  • i have xperia T2 Ultra and i want lolllipop

  • Danié

Hey I’m Sony, and I release 3759302849921 millions of non Z series phones in 2014 which I’m no going to update! And I’m asking myself why my mobile business is going from bad to worst!

Now seriously, with my Xperia V stuck on 4.3 JB i’ll probably move to Motorola or Windows Phone.

Really bad Sony, hope the worst to you.

  • please release lollipop for xperia t2 ultra

  • roeshak

Well considering how many Z devices there are, this was always on the cards. By the time Sony finishes updating the entire z range, we’ll probably be edging close to September at the rate they’re going presently.

  • Anel Mustafoski

    yes it will get

  • Taras Morales

If i was u i would use custom rom

  • ..

Their tweets also say to stay tuned, they will infom us on the next WEEKS….WEEEEEEEEEEEKS so fu***ng funny

If mid range n lower range didn’t get software update within their 18 months of life which sony says for software update, then there is only one possible way to stand a chance to tell sony either they update their mid n lower range to latest software or those who bought these phones file a court complain about sony is not keeping up there promise of 18 months software update.
There is an article on net that many companies didn’t update their phones only because of their customer are not serious about privacy n latest software. These customer either change their operator or buy premium phones. So in my opinion if sony ot any other company doesn’t provide latest update within stipulated time, we customer should send a strict message to sony.
If this time we doesn’t do anything then sony will do again with mid n low range of phones.
    Guys do something.

  • SONY™

Some of mid and low phone will get lollipop but not now !

  • DBS

Lucky them. They won’t have to put up with Lollipop’s horrible UI nor the notification that an update is available even after one decides not to update.
KitKat was Bad enough. If I could I’d happily even put 4.3 on my Z3Compact to get SD functionality back.

  • Fiiliip

Sony Xperia T2 ultra calm down!!

  • fuckkk sonyyy

    Fuck you sony

Now will come around Sony fancy-fan boys trying to justify Sony bullshits by just saying “Hey do you know how much those OS programmers cost for Sony ?, Sony should focus on the flagship only” !

get fucking real would you ?

  • Sweggity

Yes I did… I added up with ur sarcasm

  • roeshak

When they behave in this way, want incentive is there to purchase the m4 aqua when you know it’ll probably live and die with lollipop lol

  • Daniel Johanzon

it’s damn hard to trust sony! have been here before when the update has been delayed! hope 5.0 will next week otherwise there will be danger of looking for other mobile phone brand!

  • Carlos W. H. Sun

Kidding huh? I understand they’re trying to set up an exclusive/premium brand right now, but that doesn’t mean they should cut off the Lollipop update for non-Xperia devices… If they really do this, they will lose a lot of customers for sure.

  • Reon

Oh Yeah! Waiting for my Lollipop

  • Kaarthikeyan Swaminathan

Well last time I checked none of the OEM’s updated their low and mid rangers to lollipop. Except moto g that is. And we know why it gets it.
And my colleagues are waiting for the updated yet.

If you want to moan about sony please go ahead, every customer in every website complains about their product. All customers can do is complain and nothing more

  • RHBH

They killed Xperia E4 due this post, how a device that will be release this month and the next with KitKat will not receive Lollipop? WTF?!?

  • Kaarthikeyan Swaminathan

None of the oem updates their low ends to lollipop for that matter

  • SONY™

There’s no official word from SONY yet..

  • Dan

Maybe not all 2013 series won’t get 5.0 but i think some of them will get update but later. Sony don’t do status EOL on all 2013, that will be really bad move and lose a lot on the image of the company

  • MG

?4 is a 2015 device and will get Lollipop. They 2014 none-z series won’t get lollipop.
I am a M2 user and the latest kitkat is a very nice and stable firmware. I can’t ask for more for the €150 I bought it for.
    There are always custom roms….

  • Raj Singh

That’s fine but they should unlock the bootloaders on older Xperia devices to “let” people flash or update the devices on their own using Cyanogen or whatever else is out there…

  • Jecht_Sin

Bollocks. The Motorola moto g 2013, same SoC of the M2, updated to Lollipop. Already.

  • AG

    But… SP…

  • Guest

Dude calm down I like Sony stuff but when I want something I get it

  • Battal Aljadei

You don’t care about a customer complains but you care more about justifying Sony bullshits :)
Last time i check there’s some mid-rangers will get lollipop and that includes samsung galaxy s5 mini, and motorola droid mini, Go ahead justify this sony bullshit to somebody else fan boy .

  • Ami

    I’m aware of that, but I don’t consider é.g. T3 Ultra as a low-end… You do?

  • Orçun Bakkal

why you guys want a unstable version of android so much

  • Kaarthikeyan Swaminathan

I would feel sad if t3 doesnt get it for sure. But Sony hasnt as always said what it plan are. Lets wait for the death bell, till then with hope

  • Wolf0491

Yeah my regular Z already has lollipop too. And didn’t the V come out like a long ass time ago like before the original Z no way that’s getting updated?

  • Kaarthikeyan Swaminathan

    Moto g My ass.
I have 9 colleagues at my workplace who have a moto g and none of them have the updated till date. Moto G is the midranger that even got of the entire lot if it reaches my city. And the only reason it got it was coz it was a google sponsored mobile.

  • Johannes

To the crybabys, when did Sony promise that it will update other series to Lollipop then the Z series? Some of you should really try to grow up

  • Stephen

no lollipop for z series owners too, im wondering which will i see first, christmas or lollipop

  • Kaarthikeyan Swaminathan

S5 mini is a promise for the 2nd quarter at the least and we all know what sammy did to this junk. And in my place it is still more expensive than the M2. If you compare it to a mini the the entire compact series from Sony gets lollipop too.

  • Sweggity

Isnt the nightly version not stable. It’s filled with bugs.

  • Micheal Archer

And I want Lollipop on my W810i!

  • Wolfing

    Where is my lollipop

  • Micheal Archer

I wouldn’t read too much into this. Maybe the responses are based on questions about the other series getting Lollipop in March/April. And maybe they are just plain wrong. On the other hand, maybe they are accurate.

Anything with a 2014 release date, in theory, could see Lollipop if the phone has the hardware. But if Sony hasn’t released Lollipop for the Z series, that means they haven’t begun work on the mid-range phones. With an 18-month update window, mid-range phones released in early 2014 will not be updated and low-end phones released in 2014 will likely not be updated either. The only way that this could be incorrect is if Sony can largely use the same build and apply it to other hardware configurations without any difficulty.

  • mrjraider

Welcome to the same fate as the Xperia SP.. Where is your God now ;)

  • so where

For those without the Z…..I DON’T GIVE A FUCK ABOUT YOU!

  • They’re crazy, oh gosh!

  • In fact Sony is tdoing what they said. During these months we have seen updates for bug fixes and to 4.4.4!

  • Jecht_Sin

Maybe it isn’t available yet in your country, but Motorola officially states it’s there:

    https://motorola-mobility-en-in.custhelp.com/app/software-upgrade-news/g_id/2014/

The SoC is the same, it wouldn’t be an enormous task to port it. Qualcomm did most of the job already.

  • My Z is still on 4.4.2 lol

  • Jecht_Sin

Not that I didn’t expected it, but I’m still disappointed. If this is what Sony means with the “Xperia experience” they are better thinking their strategy again.

If I’ll have to switch to a flag phone to keep it updated I’ll buy the iPhone, thank you.

If xperia t2 ultra wont get lollipop so why should we buy Sony phones because after the release of t2 ultra they will only give 2 updates and all the updates are buggy, so hope in next update is bug free but if they wont than there is lossing of customer is Sony plan, beacause we sacrifice with ram when buying phone just due to Sony now if they do this there is no hope for new Sony, so I think to buy xperia m4 aqua but if they do as like this for mid rangers than I sell my t2 ultra and go with another brand because its xperia Z very old now but still it get lollipop so why not 2014 phones like m2,t2, t3, m2 aqua, c3, etc….

If they not handle so much device so why they release

I told you guys Sony sucks, Nowadays Sony isn’t a popular brand anymore especially in mobile world, there’s just a few people who know or care about Sony Xperia, the left small group of people who still choose to buy Xperia Devices devices instead buy other brands, in fact Sony should thank them or try to keep or save them those left people but looks like Sony never ever realise this!

If Sony don’t want to support low end and midrange devices then stop selling them!

  • Tim Rox Westerholm

I don’t even think Samsung is gonna update their 2011 or 2012 handsets. The only thing that guarantee you 9 years (today) of monthly updates from Sony for example is PlayStation 3 :-) or Windows (if you own a Vaio)

  • Tim Rox Westerholm

U name one single device (flagship) back in 2011 that’ll receive Lollipop and I’ll eat Michael Jackson’s hat.

AND if we’re looking at Samsung, their going to update their S & Note & Alpha series to Lollipop, Sony doing the same thing, Z’s & Z Ultra & Compact series.

In every Xperia Blog Post you looking for a single person who says something that you like, then you always comment one thousand different versions of “Sony Sucks”.

  • Nguy?n T?n L?c

I understand the disappointment among you guys with mid end phones. I myself want lollipop on my z1 too. But after I saw what my my phone will become on lollipop, I don’t feel much eager anymore, it becomes like a meh like having it would be better but it doesn’t change much if not.
Now let’s talk a little more about other non Z phones:
Firstly just because they said no lollipop doesn’t mean those phones won’t get Update anymore anymore. Bugfix and minor features update will still come.
Secondly, from what reported, it seems mid-end and low-end sale were not good at all, which means not a lot of users use those devices. So it’s not sufficient for Sony to spend resources to update for nearly no one.
Thirdly, just because they said no lollipop suddenly makes all those mid-range and low-range worthless and not usuable anymore??? I’m sorry if I offense anyone, but base on my experience, most average users who buy those that are not flagship usually won’t care much for updates as long as the phones operate stably. Besides, you pay to use the phone, not pay to sit around and wait for update to observe it. So unless without the update the phones stop functioning, your money spent on the phone to use it would still be worth it.
Fourthly, it’s Sony’s fault for releasing so many Z variants so now they still have a heavy burden of updating the Z series ahead. Not to mention what they have to deal with if those update doesn’t meet everyone’s expectation. Now for others, it would be more justified to cry for lollipop after Sony is done with the Zs.
Finally, if you compare with other companies about updating mid-range, you have to be more fair. The numbers of devices getting the update is no where near Sony’s. And besides, for those mid-ranges that got update, are they significanty better or just almost the same with some minor changes in like, build numbers for example? If Sony does like others, and release update that almost does not change your phones at all (or potentially slow it down, like how Sony was bad with old ics update), would you still want it. And be more fair when comparing the money you paid for the update’s quality.
Now it’s not like I say what Sony do with the updates is the right thing to do. It’s just that Sony’s foolishness simply won’t change in a day or two. They still need a lot of time to learn. And there’re many better options to do than crying here, blaming Sony, saying you will not use Sony again while the phones in fact still work just fine. For example you can try custom rom like cyanogen if available or complain at sony’s official site, not here, it’s not like sony’s staff come here to check everyday, this is a fan site.

  • roeshak

Agreed! It’s very unfortunate that devices released in the same year as lollipop will not receive the update.
It’s one thing to dismiss the budget phones but this move by Sony to start dismissing the mid rangers is very troubling.
The thing is the 6 month update cycle has just caught up with them in a very bad way. They’re just so many Z devices that it’ll take many months to get through them all. Then comes the subsequent updates to fix any bid bugs or problems.
Lollipop will at least make its way to the S5 mini and M8 mini so Sony’s equivalent should receive it also.
To be honest, these things don’t bother me as much anymore. Not now that Samsungs putting out devices I also find very appealing. Z2 will be my last Sony device for a while. I’ll wait for the S6 edge to drop in price then I’ll pick one up to try. I’m due an upgrade next year so if I’m not happy with Samsung I can always return to the z5 next year but my guess is once I move in Samsungs direction, I won’t be returning to Sony. They’re a piss taking old school company with very old school greedy ways. 6 years of this bull I think is enough. Time for a change!

  • Wolfing

Lol my vaio vgn-aw31s getting no more updates since 2 years. If Sony support the video card. I have chance to play battlefield 3. Sorry for bad English

Anyone surprised? What devices do you think smartphone manufacturers does earn most money on? That’s right, the premium ones! If you now have a premium smartphone, then why are you mad your mid range won’t get any updates? I’m confused….

  • TheOddSwede

Interesting that the videos from MWC shows Z3 using Lollipop 5.02 and just today it was announced that Nexus is expecting Lollipop 5.1 update within a week. I guess we have to wait another 5 months for them to configure their bloatware to work with that version.

Is even cheaper to buy a Xperia Z than to get phones like Xperia T2 ultra or T3. Xperia Z is old but has still very good support. Conclusion, buy a Flagship. just wait for the price too drop.

  • Kunorishi

Wait for flagship price to drop. Xperia Z was cheaper than Xperia T3 and T2 ultra when they were launched to the market although Xperia Z is much older.

  • Kunorishi

Yeap! Just wait for the price too drop. Xperia Z is cheaper than most Xperia mid range when the new mid range was launched.

  • Chan Kin Cheung

or buy a phone that have the latest version already built-in on it.

  • Amir

Wise words. you care for software updates? buy a new flag or buy an old flag. but make sure its a z device = instant 2 years software updates. done. end of story.

  • Tadija Djurovic

Sony xperia m4 aqua has androud 5.0, but not from the Z series. I am sure you will all sony phones from the middle class in 2014 with the upgrade to Android 5.0.

I guess sony will be bringing updates to last year’s series after all. C3 was last year righ? Hehe! Anyways, you can choose whatever you want to. For me, I’ll be waiting for Z4 if it’s worth it. But if not, I’ll be hopping onto different oems too. Just for a change… As long as it is android.

Nah I want to try something else. Been using Sony Ericsson and then Sony devices now for the past 6 years. The s6 edge is the right device to move on to.
No ip certification is something I’ll miss not from a usability standpoint but from a peace of mind protective.
I can live with 32gb of storage just fine. Did it with the xperia s with no issues whatsoever!
It’s time to experiment with something else and there are finally options available. M9s a no go. It’s a very ugly looking device that just feels like a piece of jewellery with a crappy camera to boot so Samsung is the way forward. Don’t expect much from LG so won’t be waiting to see that with much anticipation. As for the z4, I think I’ll pass on that one. Maybe back for the z5 next year

Yes and they are the few smartphone makers who does update mid ranger and budget phones :p

  • Pingback: Samsung-Tablets | Sony confirms Android Lollipop update will be released only for Xperia Z series smartphones()

  • Chris Naskos

Yes, if the device is a single core 1GHz with 512MB of RAM. E3 on the other hand has a quadcore 1,2GHz cpu and 1GB of RAM, more than plenty of power to run lollipop smoothly.

  • Chris Naskos

On the other hand supporting a 2012 flagship (now available for the price of E3) means that there at Sony can’t do any kind of fiscal math since profit is in the numbers. How many ppl are willing to buy now a 2012 flagship? Even if they do how much will be the profit for Sony since the cost hasn’t rly decreased (device already manufactured back then)? On the other hand how much more money will they make if they do support the low/mid ranges which may develop to a frenzy of satisfied buyers?

I was waiting for z4 to be announced last week but i guess they’re still fixing the temperature problems of SD810 as mentioned in esato “Sony Xperia FS NEW “structure” VS SD810 “temperature” ,who will WIN…???”. I also don’t feel getting the M9 and S6 edge is so tempting because it has a new look and the toned-down touchwiz looks promising. But i did get the Iphone 6 plus and tried it for a couple of days. But it seems I’ve been soooooo got used to android and all of its whatsoever good things. So yeah… i didn’t like it because of many things and just gave it to my fiancee.

For now, I’ll hold on to my Z Ultra and wait for the Z4. I hope they fix the hardware so it could prolong Sony Mobile’s dying state.

Bug-free experience? But Kitkat suffers from the biggest bug of no-sdcard-access-to-apps. If I wanted such limitations I would buy an iphone. If I knew that Sony would not update as Google intented (18 months of support to the latest hardware supported version) then I would buy a windows phone..

Sony should stop spamming market with non Z series phone because the phones seems suck at software update. They should only make Xperia Z, Z1, Z2, Z3, Z4 until Z infinity and no Xperia M, E, J, L, S or whatever that will never get android updates…..

I owned a T2 Ultra. Because of 1 GB of RAM I’ve sold it. The experience with 1 GB of RAM for simple multitasking is simply bad (a lot of app restarts in backround, a lot of homescreen refresh, a lot of kewboard crash etc). Now I own a ZL and its 2 GB of RAM are perfect for my multitasking needs (I’m not a gamer at all). With this case I’ve learnt a lesson: buy a flagship if you want a good support of 2-3 years.
