psm_devicesThe signs were ominous, Sony had already ended support for PlayStation Mobile (PSM) on Android devices and now Sony has announced that it will be closing PSM for good on 10 September 2015.

Sony has said that distribution of content will end after 15 July 2015, whilst the ability to download purchased content will be discontinued after 10 September 2015. On this same date, the “PlayStation®Mobile for Android” app will also be unavailable for download.

You will still be able to play the content you have downloaded after 10 September, but you will have to follow the steps below to activate your device. Remember, after 10 September 2015 you will not be able to re-download purchased content so you must make sure you download any games you want to keep before then. Also, devices that are not authenticated before 10 September will not be able to access your PSM content (even if you have downloaded it).

Steps on activating your device:

For PS Vita users:
You will need to complete the device activation process by performing the steps below between March 10, 2015, and September 10, 2015:
Go to [Settings] > [PSN?] > [System Activation] > [PlayStation Mobile] > [Activate] > [OK].

For PlayStation®Certified device users:
You will need to open up the PSM app and launch any purchased PSM content between April 10, 2015 and September 10, 2015 to complete the content authentication process.

That means no gaming with Z2/3 on PS3/4?

  • Dil2abu

To be honest nobody is using PlayStation mobile.. But the dream of Xperia Play 2 ended..

  • ash

For that there is another app if i am not wrong

  • BruceLeeRoyJenkins

I wouldn’t say “ended”, if Sony wanted to they could find a way to load some Playstation games and allow offline gaming.
Want to play Last of Us? Download and play it on the go with the Xperia Play 2. There will prolly be a lot of restrictions if they did something like that.

If Sony was going to make a successor to the Xperia Play I feel like they would’ve made one already. Too bad, with Sony’s know how, design and Playstation integration it could have been a great, niche device.

  • Wolfing

The next one. End of Sony? (bravia, vaio, hifi,….)

  • BruceLeeRoyJenkins

It is another app, the Playstation App gives access to your PSN profile and messaging. And the Remote Play App is what connects your Xperia device to the PS4

Playstation Mobile was, sort of, Sony’s alternative to the Play Store.

  • BruceLeeRoyJenkins

I don’t think Playstation Mobile was that widely used. Don’t think Sony would lose a lot if profit or any for closing this down.

I want to ask you something that is totaly unrelated to this this article : Any idea how Sony mobile is doing in india? ( I just checked your profile and saw that you are from chennai, I also noticed that you also have a phonearena account with the same name and profile pic)

  • Ritwij

I’m from India and Sony Mobile is doing terrible here. Very few people prefer Sony over Samsung/Apple/HTC when they are buying flagships. And when we talk about the mid range and entry level, Xiaomi and Micromax dominate that segment.

  • Ritwij

Next one is Walkman and we know it.

  • Ritwij

Very few would buy Xperia Play 2, if it existed, as their primary phone. Welcome to the era of slim phones.

PS- Z1/Z2/Z3 series have decent hardware to run the most demanding games on Android and Z2/Z3 series also have PS4 Remote Play so you can enjoy even better quality games if you own a PS4.. So it’s a decent alternative to Xperia Play 2, I suppose.

So sad. Why do you think Indian people prefer Samsung/Apple/HTC over Sony phones? Is it because Sony mobile has very weak brand awareness in India? or they have poor customer care service?

  • Naresh Gundu

    it’s both.

  • lollipop

Sony… Just quit all of sony… Wtf… Just die…. It will be easy for all of us.. Fuck you sony.. And fuck your lollipop…

  • Ritwij

    There are many reasons :
    1. Brand value- People buy costly phones for social status. Sony isn’t as popular as those three I mentioned in India.

    2. Least buggy softwares- Sony’s updates comes with a lot of bugs. I have bought 5 Xperia phones and this is true for each of them. HTC rarely has bugs. Apple has bugs during major upgrades but is fixed very fast. Samsung also has minimal bugs.

    3. Great camera- No, it’s not about the megapixel. You can check out the shots. Sony’s hardware is great but final quality isn’t that great.

    4. Fast updates- Sony is damn slow in giving updates.

    5. Great advertising- Xperia Z was a hit but then Z1 onwards the advertising is very poor.

    6. Stupid 6 months upgrade cycle- This also makes the price go as low as 50% of the price at launch within 6 months. Nobody wants that.

I can go on, but you get the point. Sony is responsible for it.

  • Asa

Wasted potential, really. Can’t say anything else about this. It could’ve been big.

  • Guest

I love to see people getting so butthurt’d about lollipop. lmao so funny.

  • BE PATIENT PLEASE. (Although we know that Sony is late)

  • shenoy

I want sony to remove walkman and make it as music. The sound quality is no where near to the “walkman “, in the recent phones (SE phones, my arc, K, W series had much better sound quality) . Unnecessarily Sony is using walkman name.

  • rus_media

    Nice decision

What part of India you live in? Sony is immensely popular in North India. They def sell more than HTC. And is just as big of a status brand as Samsung.

  • Dil2abu

India is the 2nd major market for Sony after Japan. I am in south India and here Xperia is quite famous. After Samsung and Apple, Sony is considered as a top brand.. Their pricing and poor marketing was the reason for not selling well.. As a guy mentioned above, Xperia Z was very famous in India. I want then to continue same marketing At least in a country where you sell more Xperia’s than US..

  • Tushar

I’m from India. Xperias are growing in popularity, not just high end Z series once, but in mid range too. The major concern for people here is the price. Xperias are certainly significantly costlier than Samsung and Micromax for same specs. Or they take a long jump to Apple, for just its popularity.

Though the 6 points put forth by Ritwij are true, I have never seen any of people I know brainstorming about those while buying handset. Instead usually they prefer large screen (even if screen quality is crappy, PPI is low), so called “value for money” phones which provide lots of useless features for small price. No one cares if it’s Exynos or Qualcomm CPU, which radio bands the phone supports, screen to body ratio, dev support etc. Thankfully this scenario is changing fast.

  • Ritwij

I live in New Delhi. I rarely see people using Sony phones here.

  • Nathan Drake

then Xperia flagship devices (Z series) should have the ability to play PS’s games and PSVita’s games natively, Maybe Z5 and Z5 tablet will come with PSVita card game slot and dual-boot Android/VitaOS or Orbis OS, detachable controller which has LiveArea feature, for gaming.

PlayStation is the highest value property of Sony now and it looks like the only product line of Sony that really popular and success, I think Sony must be so stupid if they don’t integrate PlayStation features with Xperia devices deeply.

  • Like we’d be alive then… all of you, repent while you can!

  • [S]unjay

    This will never happen.

  • Ethan ‘blaze’ Parker

Same delhi, I definitely see Sony phones way more than HTC. Its true about Samsung and Apple tho.

  • Ritwij

Okay. Maybe. I travel mostly by metro so all I usually see people using more Desire 816/820 than Sony phones.

  • The God

that’s why Sony will never can win Samsung and Apple

  • [S]unjay

Not at all. This product will only compete with PS Vita. Sony doesn’t need a product that competes with existing products, this is self-cannibalization.
