Xperia Z4 press image leaks

by XB on 16th March 2015

in Rumours, Xperia Z4 and Z3+ series

Xperia Z4A new render of the Sony Xperia Z4 has leaked by leakster @OnLeaks, who recently also disclosed potential dimensions of Sony’s next flagship. This image confirms everything we have heard and seen of the device so far, including the use of the OmniBalance design and looks very familiar to the Xperia Z3. The notification light is similarly placed to the Xperia Z3, but the stereo speakers sit towards the edge of the device, much like the Xperia Z2.

The date on the render of Thursday 12 September may give a hint on launch date. However, the date appears to be fictitious as 12 September 2015 falls on a Saturday. Do you like what you see? Let us know if you are excited or disappointed that Sony has not moved forward in terms of design.

Xperia Z4

  • jumbo3220

That Onleaks guy is on fire :D nice to see old Z2 style speaker grills. looks great

  • Rock Kickass

I agree the @OnLeaks Twitter feed is amazing and better than most leakers out there on Twitter.

I seriously cannot wait for this phone to land. I am due an upgrade now and every other phone underwhelms me. I was going to go for a Z3, but knowing my luck, I’ll do that and then Sony will announce this. So, I’m going to wait. The more I see and hear, the more I want.

  • no reason to change my Xperia Z1

  • Khaled

Wish the notification light was in the speaker, looks like it’s in the same position as Z3

  • Rammstone

I hope this means its very close to being announced. I’m still rocking the Xperia Z and its starting to feel like I need an upgrade

  • Kiwison

looks nice and farewell to Walkman (check video)
    Off topic I’ve a question:
I bought my phone in the UK.
My residence and all my accounts are located in Sweden
I’m currently living in Turkey and using Turkish sim card :D
So which country would distribute my update, lol :D

  • the_black_dragon

Updates are depending on installed firmware region and not on your location or SIM ;)
But with flashtool you can update to the location you want without affecting your warranty

  • Joe

I’d say it’s a generic phone. Which explains itself

  • Doubleyoupee

    Sooo… It’s a Z3?

  • Amel_Marie

Dual tone flash? No one seems care about it. Should it be applied in z4?

  • Diogo Simões

Looks like the Bond Phone that we saw last year

  • Marlish

Honestly the Xperia Z1 was the only phone which was decent enough :P

  • Kanouni Yassine

back to old school, Z2 notification

  • Diogo Simões

  • Ritwij

Exactly. Z2 speaker grills and Pulse LED inside that is the best!

  • thew01

wohhooo , i like the design of front speaker ,hiding in the edge …. sadly ,the notification led still dot style :'(

  • Marlish

The leaks don’t matter. Never mind if the phone looks the same.
Just get the damn S810 heating solved, camera algorithms corrected and other new features out PROPERLY and on TIME!

  • Khaled

Led light is not inside the grill, look closely at the left corner

  • “That Onleaks guy is on fire :D” And that’s only the beginning… ;)

  • Khaled

Any news about S-MASTER on board?

  • xperiaDROID

I really hope the Z4 will have unique features and innovations, this is the chance for Sony to shine in the mobile world.

3 days battery life (2 days is awesome but they can exceed the limits)

Super fast charging (Up to par with Oppo’s VOOC rapid charging technology or maybe even faster)

Curved camera sensor (Sounds awesome, but more importantly, we need a camera that always take great pictures)

Floating touch (Would be awesome if they surprise us with a more improved and useful floating touch technology)

Great speakers (On par with HTC’s Boomsound speakers or maybe even better)

Fingerprint scanner (Common security feature that flagships should have, make it great like on the Huawei Mate 7)

Iris retina scanner (Be one of the major manufacturer to adopt this feature on your flagship)

    And many more…surprise us!

  • Kiwison

I was hoping the same, thx ;)

  • xperiaDROID

Any news about the Xperia Z4 Ultra?

  • Thx ;)

  • Abdul Ghani

This z4 will have that 21 mp camera recently announced and I am guessing sony might announce in April

  • I quite like the shiny trim as long as it’s not plastic shiny.

  • xperiaDROID

I hope so. Let’s hope for the best! ?

  • mc

    notfication light, like in z3

  • Rock Kickass

I’m wondering if it will have the Qualcomm Ultra Fingerprint Scanner on board? The Snapdragon Sense ID 3D Fingerprint Technology.

  • rus_media

    Remastered Z3?

  • pf

hope they will fix the (self-)breaking front/back glas display/cover.
    my history:
XZ display crack (overnight, without contact the phone) in 2013
XZ1 display destroyed (ok not self destroyed, but only 60cm free fall) in 2014
XZ3 backcover crack (without contact) in 2014

everytime the same direction top right corner to the middle of the left side.
    everytime no warrantie !!

  • Ritwij

    I’m talking about Z2

  • mawhob2222
  • Khaled

    Sorry, my bad

  • Khaled

I really hope it comes in that color

  • wared

    Or even better, xenon flash

  • DBS

Well, “if it ain’t broken, don’t fix it”. The design of the Z3 line is already great. Proof of that is that Samsung came along and “inspired” itself on it for the S6 (well, and then married it with the iPhone 6’s horrible design).

As for the date…it’s the Saturday after IFA…so it’s probably fake. Unless, of course, that is the date of the Press Conference in Japan. Last year Sony presented the Z3 on the 3rd September at IFA, but then held a special presentation specifically for Japan a few days later.
At any rate, I’ll be glad if the date points out to the moving towards a yearly cycle.

  • Nguy?n T?n L?c

I really like your idea of Circular LED light surrounding the power button.
For others, although I would also like that, I highly doubt half of them will present on Z4. So just be hopeful I guess.
So like unless, Z4 can deliver half or more of what you said, I see no reason for it to be delayed till September (if the speculated release date is true)

  • Omarion07

S-master, IMX230 with improved image processing algorithms, 2k screen resolution (with or without 1080p variant) and a June release will make me a really happy man! I have my doubts about the S-master amplifiers though.

  • Luxsaan06

The time and date on the press image(10:35 Thu, Sep 12) is the same on the press images on Xperia Z3 range, M4 range, E4 range and Z4 range. The time and date has nothing to do with launch date…

  • BruceLeeRoyJenkins

with specs like those everyone would be happy. I want something that will really make Z3 owners want to upgrade

  • BruceLeeRoyJenkins

Maybe a small compromise for better speaker quality? I do have to admit the speakers look much better on the Z2, and Z4 than on my Z3

  • Omarion07

I have a Z3 compact.. So I think these specs are a good upgrade.

  • -Simone-

Where I can find the wallpaper shown in these Z4 screen .
Is equal to that for M4 Acqua and Z4 Tablet.

  • Khaled

Same here man, especially with the 810 overheating issue, it might be hard to pull it off, but who knows!

  • Amel_Marie

Owh hell yes! Who needs dual flash when you have the superior xenon!

  • BruceLeeRoyJenkins

I thought Qualcomm just mentioned that at MWC, which means it prolly won’t be released till late this year or next year.

As long as the performance and overheating issue isn’t an issue like with the 810, I cant wait

  • Khaled

I heard on Esato that there might be an updated version for the James Bond movie around Sept rocking SD 820

  • BruceLeeRoyJenkins

I think so as well. I’m seriously hoping the Z4 doesn’t suffer from any overheating or lag because of the 810. Some G Flex 2 reviews say there’s mad throttling under the hood and lag

  • BruceLeeRoyJenkins

Updated how? Knowing Sony the Z4 should be a powerhouse already. I’m very curious to how they would update it

  • Khaled

Yeah I guess so! Another reason I can think of is interference with camera, or something have to with the battery life because of the pulse notification

  • gamer324

Would be great to see some images of the black model. Also we still don’t know anything about the ‘bells and whistles’ features like IR blaster, wireless charging, biometric security etc.
Would be great if Onleaks could fill us in further :)

  • Khaled

Maybe an exclusive color with updated processor, that’s what was hinted

  • Omarion07

Interesting! Although people are saying that SD 820 won’t go into mass production till quarter one 2016

  • Khaled

That’s what I heard too, worse case scenario might be a redesigned 810 or 815

  • BruceLeeRoyJenkins

I think wireless charging from the Z3V, in the US, could make it’s way to the Z4. Also because Sony didn’t add charging pins, because Sony would never give up an opportunity to sell a great, but expensive accessory

  • DonRox

    z4 next to z3. Quick paint job:P
i think the z4 looks sleekier than the z3. also bezels look ever so sightly reduced. 5.3″ ??

  • Abdul Ghani

Another thing bugs me is why sony did not gave lollipop algorithm and lollipop camera features keeping it for z4 exclusive or what

  • BruceLeeRoyJenkins

…damn… I can’t wait. I have a Z3, my brother the Z3 Compact and I can’t wait to see what Sony does with the Z4, and an updated version.

I wasn’t really paying attention to smartphones when Sony released the last Bond phone, Xperia T or TX, I think, I’m not positive on that. Did that come with anything special?

  • daviddang

the resemblance of how close these two renders look makes me question the authenticity of the Z4 leak even though i’m pretty sure this is what the Z4 will probably look like which i have no problem with

  • MiB

Any word on the z4 compact????

  • ??? ???

I was expecting a metallic form, but the form z3 more durable and resistant

  • joseph carmine nero

there is one made in XDA

  • BruceLeeRoyJenkins

The Z4 is shaping up to be a great flagship, hopefully these leaks will carry some truth. To be honest Samsung stepped up their game, but by removing the battery cover and micro SD card they really pulled a stupid mistake. Especially since battery life, according to GSMArena’s review, is around the same as the S5. M9, is very meh, at best for me, sorry, they dropped the ball. All we got left is the G4 and Z4!

  • BruceLeeRoyJenkins

  • joseph carmine nero

search it.i can give you a link when i get back home

  • Nabeel Raza

    Same here man.
I’m on Z and Z4 is gonna be ma next

  • I want LED in the top speaker :(

  • Khaled

XPERIA T Skyfall edition only came with exclusive content, no changes in specs or colors. Howeve, Sony Ericsson Cybershot C902 received an exclusive color (titanium grey)for Casino Royale

  • joseph carmine nero

    edit:wrong link.wait a sec

download this and take wallpaper using 7 zip

  • crackinthewall

Which makes it the perfect candidate for the Z5 and they can hide it under the bottom bezel. If Sony releases the Z4 with S810 in September as reported here, they’re dead in the water. Early 2015 specs for a late 2015 flagship is just suicide IMO. Samsung would be releasing the next Note by that time, LG will release either the G4 or the rumored new Note competitor, Motorola will also be releasing the Moto X (2015) and we’re not even taking OnePlus and Xiaomi into consideration. Anyway, either we get another bin for the S810 without the overheating issue or the S820 for late 2015 flagships so it would not look good for Sony to be under-specced again.

  • ToharLalua

Any news by when Xperia Z3 Tablet Compact is gonna receive this lollipop update??

  • Pingback: ?????????????????????Xperia Z4???????????????? | T's MEDIA()

  • roeshak

September would be way too late for this phone. Way too late.
Anything past June and they’ll struggle with it commercially

  • Jaissal S

As current Z series owners are upgrading to Android 5.0.2, Z4 will have 5.0.2 or 5.1 installed. So what will make the Z4 unique compared to Z3? For the people that know about the processors and that will know that it’ll feature the 810. Aside from all this, what will make it unique and make people buy it? Better camera? Curved sensor? Higher IP rating? Waterproof usb port?

  • Omarion07

Any news regarding the SD810 performance in M9 or Xiaomi mi note pro? Maybe it’s just in the G flex 2 because of its curved design?

  • zymo

Pure speculation from non-insiders. A Z5 release in September is highly unlikely considering Z4 is going on sale in May.

  • Snorky112

everything will be higher and better, like Apple does with the iphone

  • Snorky112

it wont be too late, it will be just in time. samsung is way too late ;)

  • Khaled

It’s all rumors, but IF there is such a device it’s either a small refresh or something to tie it with James Bond flick

  • shenoy

Missing those SE designs. Sony is becoming lazy Z, Z1,Z2,Z3 and now Z4 with same design??? 2011 SE phones had all new designs Arc, Neo, minis, Ray,T, TX, S Ion…… What happened to you Sony???

  • Omarion07

No one said September. The date mentioned is fictitious. Sony mobile representatives already said they’re not moving to a one year cycle. Besides it’s highly unlikely Sony’s going to release the flagship 3 months later than the tablet. I’m putting my money on June!!

  • jokensy

With that horrible screen on the Z1, you should have changed your phone a long time ago like me. I had a Z1 but I was so disappointed with the screen that I bought a Z2 as soon as it came out. Until today, I’m still satisfied with my lovely Z2.

  • Khaled

I upgraded my Z1 to Z2 just because of the screen, it was worth it for sure!!

  • P9

love the design all the way, looks so simple+ stylus and now even become Sony style, I can feel Sony.

  • joseph carmine nero
  • joseph carmine nero
  • ryq24

Hoping it would have bigger screen.

  • Kaostheory

Was an aluminum phone with rubber bumpers, and small bezels. I still have mine, and still like the size. Using Z3 now and loving it.

  • joseph carmine nero

    that isn’t good for sales.

  • Kaostheory

They also have a S6 active with bigger battery and waterproofing.

  • Kaostheory

Lollipop supports raw, so if Sony also supports it then you could use any camera app, even port Samsungs since they currently have the best. Using the 815 would solve the overheating.

  • Marlish

I do understand the advantages for RAW shooting. Do you realise that RAW photos need processing?

  • Kaostheory

That’s why I said (in theory) you would be able to port Samsungs algorithm or use an app that was designed from the ground up.

  • May Czos

You can’t use xenon as a flashlight.

  • May Czos

Early G Flexes had preproduction samples of SD810, now heat is not an issue – it just gets warm like any other phone.

  • May Czos

    M9’s performance is excellent.

  • BruceLeeRoyJenkins

Hopefully M9 reviews will be out shortly and will hopefully not suffer from the same issues the G4 has.

  • BruceLeeRoyJenkins

I hope so. I have little concern about the speed of a flagship device because no matter what they’ll be fast. I want to make sure the device doesn’t overheat to the point it stings my hands or leg, or lags curing janky performance

  • BruceLeeRoyJenkins

I do remember seeing a “leak/rumor”, on PhoneArena, with the leader saying Sony is trying to battle the overheating caused by the 810

  • May Czos

Battery life gets better and better with every generation so it shouldn’t be a problem.
Super fast charging isn’t a healthy option for non removeable battery.
Speakers are great already, they’re basically on par with Boomsound in HTC M8. Compact needs better speakers though.
Iris retina scanner – too complicated for everyday use.
LED around power button – there’s no space for that.

  • BruceLeeRoyJenkins

I was actually really tempted to buy that as my first Android smartphone, then I saw the SL. And then the Xperia Z was released so I just got that

  • Vuyo Ncube

    Hardware wishlist:
Accurate 5.4 inch 1080p IPS NEO display with MIP technology and better quantum dot filters up to 700 nits brightness or QHD OLED (or Crystal LED if possible) display up to 500 nits brightness
3400 mAh battery with Quick Charging 2.0, 3 day battery life
Stronger aluminium alloy or magnesium reinforcing with lipped nylon corners
Gorilla glass 4 front and back
    IP 68 certified
Fixed Snapdragon 810 processor with at least 3GB upclocked LPDDR4 RAM and LTE Cat 6 modem
    32GB / 64GB UFS 2.0 internal storage from Samsung
    MicroSD card slot obviously
21 MP f1.8 IMX230 with OIS for human-level video stabilisation, super fast phase detection autofocus, dual-tone flash and xenon flash, full-resolution real-time HDR, built in RAW support, 1080p at 120fps, 1440p at 60fps and 720p at 240fps
Big 1/3″ 5MP front facing camera with in plane phase detection autofocus just like the rear camera
Stereo speakers beating the HTC One M8 at least
Over 1W audio output in headphones with better audio chip
Waterproof USB-C port (preferably on the bottom)

    Software wishlist :
    Multiwindow-tasking based on small apps
    Xperia Icon Packs
All Sony apps have immersive mode
Deeper display calibration settings for (adjustable Gamma and colour gamut for example)
5 icons per row in app drawer
    Kill Sony Select!
Bring back Walkman ;( Spotify can still be there
More motherfugging codec support (mkv especially!)
    One handed mode (shrunken screen)
    Notification drop down button

  • May Czos

Qualcomm’s fingerprint scanner and newest mighty SD820 processor are going to be available around Q1 2016 which makes them perfect candidates for Z5.

  • BruceLeeRoyJenkins

I see Sony pushing the, “new Bond phone” hard. It’s great advertising, but it’s hard to showcase such a great device/ company in an action movie

  • May Czos

There’s a possibility that Qualcomm’s new fingerprint scanner can be located under the glass, therefore under the screen as well. That would mean good speakers and small bezels.

  • May Czos

    Bezels look exactly the same.

  • BruceLeeRoyJenkins

I have to wait and see what PocketNow says about the actual retail model compared to their review one. LG won’t screw up that bad, and having the 810 run smoothly on a heavy android skin like LG’s hopefully means it should fly on lighter skinned devices.

  • May Czos

They said that Sony is trying to figure out how to cool mighty processor in very thin body. But the leak above denies it because it shows that Z4 may be as “thick” as Z3.

  • May Czos

LG’s skin is not only heavy but also buggy, powerful processor wouldn’t change that. LG has problems with it from some time.

  • May Czos

815 is just w rumor and even if it’s not – it won’t be available anytime soon.

  • Omarion07
  • Omarion07
  • Khaled

I think the only thing that got officially announced from Qualcomm was 820 at MWC. I honestly heard about 815 few weeks ago and looks like it’s just a rumor like you said

  • May Czos

Not impressed. I’m still waiting for Z5 Compact in 2016. With Sony’s progress rate it may finally have acceptable image processing (+decent sensor), hopefully well calibrated screen (10000K in Z3 is a joke), S-Master amplifier, improved front speakers and digital noise cancellation, Snapdragon 820 processor with 4GB of DDR4 RAM, 32/64GB of internal storage + microSD card slot, 3000mAh battery with wireless charging, better housig that won’t crack on its own. A few clever software functions would be nice since now Sony is supposed to focus on software as well.

  • BruceLeeRoyJenkins

For me that brings some concern, doesn’t having a water and dust tight device mean overheating could be a bigger issue?

  • May Czos

GSMarena tested one as well and they didn’t notice that.

  • Joaquim

By 2016 it may very well be a Vaio Z5.

  • (C):stem

Hope this is a good upgrade for my Xperia X10

  • paul_cus

Yeah, it’s definitely nice that Sony went back to the older grill look. Much nicer, in my opinion.

  • Omarion07

I really dont know which websites to believe any more.. I think we should wait for more reviews to know what’s really going on!

  • Omarion07

I hope Sony can solve this issue in the next few months!

  • paul_cus

That’s what I’m waiting for, too.

  • May Czos

    1. Vaio just showed their new phone and it’s just rebranded Panasonic for $200 more.
    2. Sony isn’t going to sell mobile division anytime soon.

  • Snorky112

it’s bettter to stay on same design for recognition, you can see in a blink of an eye that you have a sony device

  • karam abi karam

Sony wont use the sd810 , it will use sd820 and will be the first to ise it. Z4 shold be 21mp and front facing 12 mp

  • jmaxim917

    Looks just like my Z2.

  • liampaulmassey

I’ll be getting an upgrade from my Z1 in December, so the Z4 will have been out for about 3 months so I’ll probably upgrade to the Z4, I just hope it won’t be easy to drop

  • so where

Jesus the design is great but either the software or hardware needs a major refresh.

  • Raj Singh

The September 12 date has been on other Sony screenshots, including the video they put out for the Lollipop update earlier today.

  • Niels d. G.

SE Xperias had even worse sales.

  • May Czos

S6 Active is still just a concept.

  • May Czos

According to GSMarena’s test S6 has significantly shorter battery life than S5.

  • May Czos

SD820 will be out next year

  • BruceLeeRoyJenkins

I still have a feeling the masses will perform the S6, and all its flaws over the Z4, M9, and G4. The S6 is a solid device, solving the design issue. But by doing so, they’ve taken two steps backwards. As an Xperia owner I never had to worry about carrying a spare battery, especially with my Z3. But the S6 has good, at best, battery life and you can’t replace it. And no micro SD card is a huge advantage android has that Samsung neglected just for more profit by forcing those who want more memory to pay more.

  • jakobd.

Please Sony, make Xperia Z4 with aluminum unibody, speaker and message LED as on Z2. No glas no plastic

  • Gadget Lover

You should only trust respective and trusted source like Anandtech. Samsung’s paid bloggers and tech sites are desperately trying to confuse people with SD810’s overheating issues so that people will think S6 is the only choice they have. Don’t be fooled by sites thats credibility are questionable. SD810 is fine. The first batch had problem but the new batch is fine.

  • mustafa

BTW the speakers are part of the panel, as opposed to the z2 which was part of the frame

  • Amir

    Simon said.

  • Paolo Malgarise

Xperia z3 are you ??? :) copy and paste!

  • Amir

lol, you smoking? it’s like upgrading from a black and white tv to 4k tv.

  • if only the sony logo could be removed again it would be a true successor to my sony logoless xperia z1 :(

  • jokensy

    …Improved! (a little bit)

  • jokensy

    Ha! Ha! You’re funny.

    Very funny :-)

not everyone updates every year, I was on Xperia X1 for 5 years when I upgraded for my Xperia P, now I have to change because it lags too much, else I would have kept it

  • jokensy

I just read somewhere that the HTC one M9, using the SD 810 processor, reached a temperature of 55.4ºC (132ºF) during benchmark test! Now I’m really worried for the Z4.

  • inspire

But doesn’t it look kind of fake? Look the icon row, it’s reaching middle of the screen which is not possible at all on a 5+ inch phone!

  • joseph carmine nero

thats why they keep familiar design.customers now recognize it

  • lolzor logic
  • SC

HTC One M9 overheats. Will the Z4 overheat? Or rather will anything with the Snapdragon 810 overheat?

  • May Czos

    No, Qualcomm said (at MWC).

  • May Czos

I’ve never seen someone carrying spare battery for his/her phone. For the same price you can buy some compact powerbank. No MicroSD card slot is an issue but even 32GB is plenty for most users – most people won’t even notice that.

  • ed

This is FAKE, look at how high up the dock and app drawer button are! If you imagine completing the rest of the phone, the dimensions of the screen would be way way off 16:9 and the entire device would be short and fat.

The Google search bar at the top is far too wide, Sony’s Lollipop UI has thick borders that wouldn’t have this.

  • Snorky112

    ya it’s fake it’s just a mix of Z2 Z3 and Z3 compact

  • Rock Kickass

    Thanks to OnLeaks via Twitter:

More details. Page is in French which you can use Google Translate to get a good idea of things.

  • ciebozz

    another from @onleaks:disqus :D

  • DBS

Aluminium overheats like hell. I rather they keep the glass, thanks.

  • Does anyone else think this is fake?
The app tray looks too close to the top and the Google search box looks misaligned.

  • Gabriel Franco

that’s why i move out from sony, they don’t change the design, it’s the same phone since Z1, this is boring

  • Billy de Fretes

    then why you still here?

  • jag

Whatever it is! I sure am going to buy it on the first day!!

  • ash

Z3 is perfect i think. I don’t think you should upgrade

  • Itsarapong Intoum

I agree, I have xperia ion and found it was very hot. Even it’s look awesome I still don’t want SONY to use aluminium back plate again.

  • GigaSPX

I find it stupid some tech journalists claim that Sony is following Samsung in having no waterproof features because of flapless micro USB port and no individual slot for micro SD means no expandable storage. Sony isn’t trying to be the next best Apple, it’s demanding great to be more innovative without losing premium properties.

    Infrared port?
2)New Sensor? Looks a little different

  • Android Masterrace!

  • Paul Lam

This ‘leak’ is probably some Photoshop mockup from a fanboy. Nothing much to see here, let’s move on.

Then again, I can hardly wait for the Z4 to be released. I think Sony can pre-install Android Lollipop 5.1.x or 5.2 in late 2015.

  • Nguy?n T?n L?c

    1) Probably hole for accessories like keychain or something.

  • kaiju

5.5 inch with Full HD screen

if Sony want to use Walkman name with Xperia devices then Sony have to put the S-Master Amplifier on Xperia Devices as well, if not, I think Sony should get rid the fake-Walkman from Xperia devices.

New Camera UI and better auto mode

    Xperia Z4 has 5.2 inch screen ?

So sad, It would be so good if Xperia Z4 has 5.5 inch screen but the same dimensions as Z3

It does not make sense, because if you look at the left side, there isn’t such a hole and an accessories hole would be a loooot smaller and near the edge

I think they can make it with a hidden bar inside for the line to wrap around, that’s why it’s bigger. Accessories hole is very popular in Japan I think and Sony would probably not removing that. Anyway, if it’s something else (sporting some cool features underneath it), It would be more awesome :v
