Root success for T-Mobile Xperia Z3 and Verizon Xperia Z3v

D6616 RootWe do feel for our friends in the US who look to buy Sony Xperia phones. All of the Xperia phones sold through carriers (and there aren’t many) will come with a locked bootloader and therefore the probability of getting the handsets rooted are low. Success is also hampered given that Sony’s market share in North America remains low.

Well against the odds, we are very happy to report that XDA user zxz0O0 leveraged a new exploit (CVE-2014-7953) to achieve root for the T-Mobile Xperia Z3 (D6616) and Verizon Xperia Z3v (D6708).

Installation involves running the exploit.bat file in the package found here. For Verizon Xperia Z3v users you will need to make sure that you are on the original shipping firmware (build number 23.0.E.0.376) for the exploit to work. Full instructions for both handsets can be found at the source links below.

congrats 2 all specified US Xperia Z3 Owners :-)

  • Will that exploit work for a carrier-sold regular Z3 without unlockable bootloader?

  • Svnjay

If your have the T-Mobile Z3 or Verizon Z3v.

  • I meant devices sold outside the US… I’m buying unlocked anyway

  • Svnjay

No, there should be an exploit for your unlocked device but the exploit that was found today are for the American Z3s.

  • Amimanot

There is already a root method for that, although you do need to downgrade to the 1st kitkat firmware for the z3

  • Oh. Thanks.

Ayeee! That’s my image there with the D6708! Also I can confirm that custom recovery can be flashed to the Z3v, as well as getting the current FW for it to be prerooted! :D

Sony Xperia Z5: New Design Details Revealed [Exclusive]

“Sony will be making a number of major changes to the design with the Z5 and the end result will be very different from anything we have seen earlier on an Xperia device. The design is said to draw heavily from the company’s recent BRAVIA television sets and will feature a completely clean front end with a frosted glass effect. Sony’s iconic logo will be moved to the side of the device, so no branding on the front whatsoever. Also as we mentioned in our previous report, the body will be thicker than the Xperia Z3 and Z4, with more angular sides. Interestingly, our source says the sides could actually be reminiscent of Sony Ericsson devices from the past.”

If I can I unroot in case I have to return the device to T-Mobile?

  • scoderp

  • jacksnack

thats not what root is about

  • Stemro

You cannot flash any other firmware as the T-Mobile is a different variant of the Z3 (D6616), therefore flashing a firmware designed for a non-T-Mobile variant will likely brick your device!
