Android 5.1 coming to Xperia Z series in August says Telstra

Android 5.1Android 5.1 Lollipop is scheduled to land in August 2015 for the Sony Xperia Z series according to Australian carrier Telstra. In its latest “Software Updates” roadmap, Telstra has listed three Xperia Z series devices (Xperia Z, Z1 and Z1 Compact) for the update. Telstra says that a test submission was received on 1 May but that a “showstopper issue” was identified. A new submission is now expected on 10 July.

Generally speaking, we expect that generic devices would receive the update before carriers so the wait for Android 5.1 on Xperia may be shorter than August. However, it is unlikely to be significantly earlier. Judging by the “showstopper issue”, it sounds like it won’t land before July at the earliest. Is this later than you expected? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below.

Well, I would stop hopping 5.0 if I’ll get 5.1 on August.
Although it can also be taken as a mistake…
Well, let’s await 5.0 gets Xperia Z this month.

  • SimonPieman

I would hope for no more than 2 months gap between 5.0 and 5.1 It’s not a major jump in functionality, and they aren’t actually writing the code, just merging it.

If Sony can’t meet these expectations, they need to think about why not. Is it testing? (I suspect it is), and in which case, they need to have a open beta program for accelerating this. A Beta program would also take the heat of users wanting the latest and not getting it.

When xperia z2 will get 5.1 update???

  • leo

    i hope z1(c) still gets android m

  • echomrg

i would switch to telstra just to show appreciation for their roadmap.
that’s something every telco should have.

  • Me

It is a 2 month gap between versions, considering Telstra had the 5.0 update for these phones scheduled for June – except Telstra just happen to be really slow with this.

An August release for Telstra 5.1 suggests it’ll be available to unlocked Z3/Z2 phones this month, and Z1/Z phones next month (if their 5.0 timing is anything to go by)

Just in time for Xperia Z5’s launch in September. Excellent.

is memory leak a problem for Sony’s 5.0.2?

  • M?rcis Buhholcs

My Z3c with 5.0.2 seems to have it, yes. As far i know memory leak is fixed in Android 5.1.1

I was just reading that post too, you beat me into it, good job by Sony :) Now I can rest my case about nagging too much about 5.1.1 :)

    Hope you are right!

  • Tweety

    Haven’t received 5.0.2 for z1 compact CE3 yet.

  • Lukas

Got a question, will that update come to me through OTA even when i flashed it through XperiFirm and Flashtool or i got to flash it again? PS.:i got Customized UK

  • Jarrod

Wouldn’t listen to telstra. Z2 was suppose to get lollipop 2-3 weeks ago now that don’t even have a date when I checked 2 days ago. Worst provider when it comes to phone updates. They even blocked the nexus update. Telstra simply said no update if you put another carriers simply in the update was available straight away.

How is this fake, it’s a company that is telling for software update, not any fake profile site, so this is not Fake.

mehr Zeit für das Update nicht ficken (Xperia Z1compact)

  • rubinaish

First, I read Android 5.0 for Z in August. I was like “F**K YOU SONY!” Then I read Telstra and felt sorry for the Australians concerned. Finally, I realized it’s about 5.1. If that’s true, I’m amazed.

  • rubinaish

No, then you receive anything whenever “Customized UK” receives it. Thankfully that’s the way it works… I’m also on UK now, just to prevent myself in any case Germany has to wait.

Just got to work out the bugs and smooth things out. There may still be a few issues, as with every large Android update, but hey, they don’t half ass updates like other OEMs.

  • And probably we (Xperia Z2 users) will receive in the summer…

Jesus keep calm, you got android 5.0.2 and Sony havent even said that they wont update ts ultra to 5.1. And keep in mind its a mid range device, you should be really happy with android 5.0.2 ^^

  • Svnjay

Your cheap mid-range phone was lucky enough to get Lollipop but you’re swearing at Sony because you want 5.0.2.

Most companies don’t update mid-rangers so be happy.

  • Sana72

will generally 5.0 to z? How long to wait?

  • Andre Lemard

No. But you can try factory resetting your phone or using the repair function of PC Companion/Sony Bridge. That should sort out any problems.

it’s kind of funny to say that while we are waiting for the 5.0.2 for the old Xperia Z series

august?????? omg… so long… time say bye sony company – and update to cyanogenmod…. im dont understand why sony making update every update like 6 months…

    ah, always late

  • Zayed Kotayba

This is unfair from SONY, Xperia T only updated twice from 4.1 to 4.3 and the Xperia Z which is only released 4 months later had been updated from 4.2 to 4.4 to 5.0 and now even 5.1

  • Malcolm

Imagine the same for Xperia Z: “Z1 got updated from 4.2 to 5.1, and Xperia Z didn’t get updated even though is was released several months before. This is unfair from Sony.” So now they update Xperia Z too, but for some reason this is still unfair. In fact, anything they do will be “unfair”. Isn’t this obvious?

Xperia Z is more than two years old, that’s a really long product support. Might’ve been grateful for that instead of bashing the company for supporting it and not the phones which came out even earlier.

it’s not about which device get the update it’s about I paid for a flagship device and SONY updated it twice only and another device got updated 4 times which is double. so I am confused about SONY update its devices unevenly.

I am also btw a SONY fan I am waiting to get the Xperia Z4 or whatever the name of the next flagship and I don’t know if the Z4 will be updated as much as the Z5 when it came out

  • Malcolm

It actually got updated three times, not twice, because initially Xperia T had Android 4.0. But this still doesn’t change my argument. Yes, you paid the flagship price and didn’t get as many updates, but so did people who bought Xperia V and so on all the way to Xperia X10. Clearly Sony can’t support all these phones. So the only other way to make it fair would be to not give the newer phones more updates than they did in the past, which will obviously leave more people with outdated versions. Is that what you want?

  • Zayed Kotayba

No, I actually respect your opinion and even agreed with you in some part (I hate the people who complain a lot) but I want to show my opinion about SONY updating strategy

I love SONY products & I actually didn’t owned a product from other brand

  • Malcolm

I respect yours too, that’s why I’m arguing with you. :) But my argument still stands. Essentially they improved their updating strategy to a pretty large extent, but couldn’t cover all the phones.

  • Damon

It will dumbass. With those specs it sure will, and still google promised for each phone to get latest android software atleast 2 years after it’s releae. So let’s count, the next android will appear in december or so. And Z1C ir 2014’s model. Don’t need to be a genius to figure that out. x)
