Xperia Z3 Plus display compared to Xperia Z3 shows a brighter, warmer screen

by XB on 28th May 2015

in Xperia Z4 and Z3+ series

Xperia Z3 Plus Display_1The Sony Xperia Z3 was found to have a much ‘colder’ display when compared to its predecessor, the Xperia Z2. If you compare them side-by-side you will notice that the Xperia Z3 has what looks like a blue tone to it. Judging by the pictures below, it looks like the Xperia Z3+ will be closer to the Xperia Z2 in terms of tone.

According to Sony, the Xperia Z3+ has a screen that is 16% brighter than the Xperia Z3 and it shows in the comparison pics. The second picture showing a head-on shot of the Google home page shows off the fact that the Xperia Z3+ has a warmer screen too. Obviously unless you are comparing side-by-side you may probably not notice the difference, but it’s good to see Sony improve the Z3+ display over the Z3.

So they did fix the idiotic blue stats bar :D

  • Kristo

I have an Xperia Z. I bought it arund October two years ago. Should I buy the Xperia Z3+ or wait for the next flagship? I need some opinions.

  • akela34

    xperiablog====== —->SEE INFO< <<<< >

  • Sadman Khan

You can change the theme. -_-

  • Aaron

using the xperia Z as well, lets just both wait man.

  • Siyam Hossain

Looks way better than z3. Great improvement.

  • Amirreza-IraN

The global update Z when it comes out?

  • fried_egg

Not impressed with Z1 lollipoop (.270) and it’s stability or camera problems. Not long until I can upgrade. One of these in bronze with the free hi-res headphones please.

  • fluxx

Which default scheme has black bars?

  • Pankaj MAHESH

    No updates

  • Killian Khoo

    White *

  • roeshak

Indeed much closer to the z2s display. Very happy indeed to see this. I really disliked the pale display of the z3. Not worthy of a flagship by todays standards.
I’m feeling a lot more positive about the z3+ after seeing this but I still think it’s one to skip. The lack of upgrades to the camera module make it just not worthwhile!

  • Alexx

Well done! And the UI is much better. Hoping in a new update for Z,Z1,Z2,Z3

  • Shravan SP

I think they didn’t set the full brightness on Z3.
Z3 has one of the brightest display according to gsmarena showing whites at over 800…
    See their review..

  • Rubenos

    As we speak, very slowly.

  • Shravan SP

On my ZR.. Default blue theme! But no blue status bar.. Only in settings :p

  • Anukul

the color temperature of z3’s screen (10000k !) was its major flaw(ideal is 6500k). Z3 plus having a warmer display is a great news. Only if the camera is able to compete with the best(currently g4 and s6) then we have a great sony device. But the thing is, I want to see a sony mobile which james bond can also use. BTW as a top spy, he only should use the best phone. Isn’t it?

  • William Wijaya

How many generation they takes to realize their fault ?
    =.=
    so speechless man.

  • Itsarapong Intoum

I’m worry about camera more than a screen >.<

  • Dakota

Even when they improve people complain about past mistakes?? It’s fixed get over it

  • Faisal Armand

Very good. I own a Z3 and by default, the display is very bluish. I have to adjust the white balance to get decent balance (sliding the reds to 255, and greens to 70)

  • bluestreak_v

I just got a Z3 compact yesterday and noticed the display was cooler than my Xperia V. It seemed maybe a little too blue, but luckily there was a color temperature setting

  • Kamil1308

I have it and I don’t have any problem with its stability and there is defenitly no camera problems.

  • rubinaish

I feel you… Won’t give away mine neither.

  • Timel

    Be Moved???
    Really Sony?

Sony still stuck with old tech like LCD while Samsung has moved forward with new better technology called “OLED”

  • MrTheenD

Update your Chrome app and it will become blue.

  • Niels d. G.

    Marketing, ’nuff said.

  • Raj Singh

    Better.

  • Niels d. G.

Yours must have a defect then, because 255 R and 70 G looks VERY reddish on mine.

  • Svnjay

Enjoy your OLED burn in and over saturation.

  • Brick

Oh man, feels bad to know your beloved flagship phone has been out-flaghshipped, but there’s nothing you can do about it and it comes with owning a flagship.

Hopefully they’ll update the regular Z3 bringing it on par with the Z3+ soon software wise.

Also I don’t think that Z3 is on full brightness, and even if it is, the brightness on Z3+ would be beyond overkill as the Z3 is already absurdly bright on max. The best thing about it is the warmer tone since Z3 has a slightly cold display.

  • goldenblls

I hate OLED tech. Go natural!

I’m sure if Sony thought it was good enough it would use it. But they don’t so they won’t. You’re substituting slightly less power consumption for crappy over saturation.

Sony phones win in the battery stakes so why install OLED? Doesn’t make sense.

  • Chaturanaga Manchanayake

Yea let’s talk about the displays. I have two Z2s and look at the difference. lol

  • P9

it will be adapt if the site does it..
blue sstatus bar is not bug any way..

  • wared

With OLED battery performance will be even better, and oled produces less heat then lcd display, and with oled you can make thinner phones without reducing the battery capacity.
And how can you tell that oled colors are not natural while lcd is? You can never know that.
What we know is that oled produces much better colors and viewing angles,
Oled have all the advantages over lcd,
And I’m sure that if Sony start using oled display, Oled will become the best display tech in your mind and every blind Sony fan mind

  • P9
  • Jiyeon90

Mine is purple, looks excellent on my purple z2

  • yudi_hilmawan

As far as i know there is no Samsung Pentile AMOLED display comes near to Sony Pro OLED Monitor.

  • Kaarthikeyan Swaminathan

    U r one rich guy I guess :D

  • True, I am waiting for theirs Trimaster El OLED.

  • yudi_hilmawan

If that is true GS6 battery life would be better than Z3 and the battery also would be bigger than Z3 but why Samsung can’t do that?
And if you look at Btekt Youtube channel when they comparing the front facing camera can you explain it to me why GS6 Edge screen look greenish from an angle.

  • Tim Rox Westerholm

    You changed the white-balance ;-)

  • Ryan Kumar Jassi

Why do both devices have different colour temps then I notice my z2 seems more red than white like the one on the left have you use white balance?

  • mukul verma

forget about this, z3+ scores way less than htc m9 in antutu & it heated upto 40 degree during test.

  • Timel

    Over saturation? Really?

DisplayMate crowns the Galaxy S6 and S6 edge as “best mobile displays ever tested”

    http://www.displaymate.com/Galaxy_S6_ShootOut_1.htm

  • Svnjay

“The Galaxy S6 OLED display’s native Wide Color Gamut in the Adaptive Display screen mode has significantly more vibrant and saturated colors, with 133 percent of the Standard sRGB/Rec.709 Color Gamut, among the highest that we have ever measured for Smartphones and Tablets.”

  • ZoubIWah

Sooo one screen is obviously full brightness while the other is minimum brightness

    What the f. ?

  • Timel

So pity that Sony still stuck with old tech like LCD, Sony should move forward with OLED technology now

  • Chaturanaga Manchanayake

Well I actually didn’t I really forgot to take a picture of that.

  • Chaturanaga Manchanayake

LOOOOL nah bro, One belongs to my mom the other is mine haha I am not rich :P

  • Chaturanaga Manchanayake

Nope I haven’t used white balance, as you can see it came default like this. IDK the reason. I’d love to find out though.

  • Chaturanaga Manchanayake

Well I know you’re the master of the troll king in Xperiablog yet I gotta say there’s nothing wrong with these LCD displays yet they need to calibrate it properly, this I found when I spotted the white colours on my phone and it was way too red so I compared it and then found out this. and I see that bluish white colour display phone gets better battery life. Don’t know the reason. Most probably because of the display.

  • Jiyeon90

More comparison pics here, the difference isn’t that big
    http://www.swedroid.se/vi-jamfor-skarmarna-i-xperia-z3-och-xperia-z3/

  • Timel

Yep but Sony must move forward with better technology

OLED is much better than LCD anyway.

  • wared

The galaxy s6 and s6 edge gets a great battery life compared to their battery capacity,
I don’t know the video you are talking about please give me the link.

  • Ryan Kumar Jassi

Hmm that’s interesting I think the same is with the tablet too because I had my screen replaced by sony and it seems crisper now

  • Timel

Z3 battery life is very good
But S6 isn’t bad at all

  • Prateek Bhanushali

First, Atleast Sony isn’t cheating the Benchmark Scores !!! Second, Its a demo device !!!

  • Sadman Khan

Try the white one for greyish bars. Download style cover black theme from play store by Sony. Quite black.

  • yudi_hilmawan

Still not better than Z3, my point is even with OLED display Samsung can’t make GS6 last longer or even put bigger battery than Z3.
Z3 also has better screen ratio and please don’t even start talking about physical button because there is 2 speakers on top and at the bottom of Z3 + IP68 certification.

    Here is the link

  • roeshak

Unless you spend all your time looking at white screens you’re comparison is meaningless. Why not show both screens in action. Maybe same photo or picture on display or a Web page. All we can tell from this is that the z3 has a brighter but very bluish panel

  • roeshak

Bluish displays have a colder colour temperature and so consume less power. They show much more muted colours and aren’t very accurate.
The warmer the display, the more yellowy the panel looks but these are better with punchier more vibrant colours but above all more accurate colour reproduction.
Looking at it at face value, you’ll might think the bluish display has better whites because it looks cleaner but that’s not true. If you compare both against a sheet of white a4 printing paper you’ll find the warmer display to be closer to the real deal.
Using cold bluish display panels are a cheap power saving tactic in my opinion and one which Sony needs to avoid in future. 2 day battery life should not come at the cost of display quality.

  • Kaarthikeyan Swaminathan

Still 2 z2 in a family. Mate thats seriously rich. I cant afford to change my z1 not that I wanted to. and My mom uses a e3. Now you know u r rich ;)

  • Timel

    Z3+ isn’t the best phone

James Bond will definitely choose an iPhone 6 over Z3+

  • Abhinav Tella

LCD is in no way an “old” tech, there are major developments happening in LCD technology.

I would rather have an LCD because on white backgrounds like web OLED eats a lots more power… Also for those who use their phones a lot screen burn is still a major issue as the blue sub pixel in OLEDs still has a very low life span.

  • Abhinav Tella

That’s not true, both have advantages and disadvantages. For those who use their phone a lot and web surf a ton, OLED would use more power and you would get screen burn due to fading blue sub pixel.

  • Raphael

Maybe both screens are not made by the same manufacturer and calibrated differently

  • wared

I know z3 have a better screen ratio, I am a Sony fan.
About the battery, the s6 edge have a longer life compared to the capacity,
    Z3: 3100 = 9h
    S6 edge: 2600 = 8h

  • Christian

do they have the same White Balance calibration? (Settings > Display > White Balance)

  • kaostheory

Don’t listen to anyone about the blue subpixel fading. Any smart person knows the Samsung Galaxy phone will die long before the pixels fade!

  • Timel

You said like this because Sony still use LCD, stop defend Sony please

2K display trend has already begun with Samsung and LG, even Sharp which is launching 4K bezel-less smartphone. Samsung and LG also move forward with OLED display and flexible OLED while Sony’s still stick with an old tech like LCD.

Now if you don’t blind you’ll see that Sony can be nothing except a follower. Sony can’t compare itself to Apple, Sony is in android world, and Sony Mobile as a android devices manufacturer and a direct competitor to Samsung, LG, Hauwei and Xiaomi. Sony should know that all android manufacturers will always compete against the competitors with lastest technologies and coolest innovation but unlike Sony, Sony is always lack behind competitors because Sony has less money to spend with R&D and maketing it’s clear that Sony is too weak to compete with any competitors now.

We know this from the Z1 compact, which was delivered with displays from AOC and JDI (the web is full of discussion about it, how to recognise, which display it is and so on). Sony seems to use displays from different manufacturers in the same models.

I also have a Samsung Galaxy S4 along with a Z3 so your point is invalid… In fact I have owned all the major flagships at various points in time and liked all of them. You seem to not have any understanding of latest advances in LCD/OLED not their advantages/disadvantages and most importantly how they even work. Do you know the rate of decay of the blue OLED phosphors in relation to the red and green? It’s that massive uneven decay in phosphors that causes screen burn….. I suggest you read about that. OLED still has long way to go before it can even be considered a replacement for LCDs.

  • yudi_hilmawan

Lol… come on!!! you using PA battery test as a reference, Their method is unclear can you tell me 9h or 8h of what?
    Average usage?
So PA knows on how most people using their phone?

  • ZXcorr

sadly the speakers on z3+ are a lot worse.

  • Geese Howard

Wait… Samsung phones have pixels??? For real? :p

  • Abhinav Tella

The bluish calibration gives appearance of higher brightness, I think that is why they did that. I prefer warmer calibration like the M8 though.

  • Abhinav Tella

That depends on how you use the phone…. A power user will easily get noticible burn in before their two year contract is up. Especially at the nav keys and clock areas.

  • Chaturanaga Manchanayake

    +1 Very true.

  • Chaturanaga Manchanayake

Yea M8 has a good display.
