Sony slightly clarifies Xperia M4 Aqua storage

in Problems, Xperia M4 Aqua

Xperia M4 AquaA few weeks ago we reported on how little storage the 8GB version Sony Xperia M4 Aqua has out of the box. Our unit had just 1.26GB free after updating preinstalled apps. Obviously, the low level of storage came as a surprise to us especially as we thought at least 3GB would be available to us (taken from the white paper). With most of the apps baked in and little chance to uninstall the bloat without root, it means the device will be compromised in terms of storage for many users.

To provide a bit more clarity to users, Sony Mobile has updated the Xperia M4 Aqua white paper, now telling people that the 3GB of user available storage is “before you update preloaded applications.” We found that updating the preloaded apps took over 1GB of storage, quite a big deal when the starting point for storage was quite low. Either way, hopefully this helps to provide more transparency to users on exactly what they get out of the box.

Sony should understand, people need solutions not clarifications!

  • spwx

solution is to buy microsd card since Sony’s new lolipops support it properly.

  • Zeljko Kovacevic

    1,26 gb storage LOL it’s 2015. not 2006.

  • Zeljko Kovacevic

No its not, you can’t install complete app on SD, part of app must be on device so no its not solution.

  • Danny

Is this the same with the E2306 (16GB)? Comes out to 9.26GB?

  • ryq24

Another blunder by Sony. Maybe it’s time to fire the guy handling their mobile division and pirate the guy running Samsung or xiaomi or Lenovo.

  • Chaturanaga Manchanayake

Well how are you gonna store those humongous obb files on micro SDcard? cause it goes to /sdcard/android/obb/. You rather root your phone and link it to micro SDcard or you never install any apps. They should have a solution like make the micro SDcard the primary data storage so people can forget about it. I think it’s a pretty good phone but ……

  • PoweredBySony

Just use a debloat script and done .

  • Jecht_Sin

There is the solution. Buy the 16GB model.

“Maybe it’s time to fire the guy handling their mobile division”

    They just did that….

  • gamer324

Yes most chinese phones do that by default (mine included), while my 8GB phone provides 3.94 GB as internal storage and a separate emulated (fuse) internal memory card of 2 GB, space has never been an issue as my 32 GB sandisk sdcard is mounted as sdcard0, and the internal sdcard is mounted as sdcard1.
Would be a good decision for Sony to do this. As it makes budget phones a wholly more valuable prospect.

  • gamer324

I believe the term you mean is ‘poach’.

  • theskig

    Looks like a joke.

  • Vuyo Ncube

64 bit apps + Lollipop + ART = 8GB storage makes no sense in 2015, dammit.

  • Ryan Kumar-jassi

On my mates s3 he has exactly 16gb to use not 11gb I think Sony should add like extra memory just for bloat I hope the z series isn’t the same when updating apps

  • Ryan Kumar-jassi

I can’t play hearthstone from my z2 tab when its on the sd card but can on my z2 phone wierd

  • ShinOrochiX

Sounds about right, 11GB w/o updating so around 9-10GB after updating. I know it is shit but the device should support apps to SD.

  • Andre Lemard

Is your mate’s phone rooted by any chance or using link 2 sd? When I got my s3 I had just under 10gb for apps. I only most of the memory back after installing paranoid android.

  • Ryan Kumar-jassi

Nope no root I just looked in his setting it said 16.00 GB and same for total I think it had total and usable he has the non lte one though

  • P9

where the f* could we find E2306? pls release it international and cancel E2303 ASAP

  • ArtemBunas

Get the latest update and you gonna be able to play it. Blizzard fixed this problem

  • Ryan Kumar-jassi

Hmm ill try move it now then

  • Reza

It’s impossible.. The internal storage is shared for os, preloaded apps and everyone knows that Samsung is full of unnecessary preloaded apps that couldn’t deleted unless you root them.

  • Ryan Kumar-jassi

I know but when I looked im sure it said 16GB not 11 I couldnt see that anywhere ill have another look at his s3 today

He either has the 32 GB model, or this is total bullshit.
The OS takes up space, no way around that, and the way memory is reported by marketing is different than reported by the OS (binary vs decimal)

  • Mathias Cronqvist

    Look harder.

  • Ryan Kumar-jassi

No I figured it in the settings it says 16GB but below it says 4Gb system data

  • Mathias Cronqvist

There you go, 12 GB discounting apps.

  • Ryan Kumar-jassi

Yep I wouldve known that sooner if I owned an s3
