Sony First Flight logoIf you remember Sony’s e-paper FES Watch, then you’ll know Sony has a small engineering team tasked with coming up with new gadget ideas. Within the business, Sony’s Seed Acceleration Program looked to fast-track new ideas into fully-fledged businesses. The latest initiative from this programme is the launch of “First Flight”, a crowdfunding and e-commerce platform.

The First Flight platform will allow start-ups to share their ideas then bring those ideas to fruition. Sony will support the launch of new business ventures through the platform. The first two business projects to launch on the platform will be MESH, which is a smart DIY kit that “turns anyone into an inventor,” and the e-paper Fes watch. Sony has also unveiled the e-paper HUIS remote control. For further information check out the dedicated First Flight site (Japanese only).

Kazuo Hirai, CEO of Sony Corporation, said the following regarding First Flight: “Sony’s innovation is ingrained in the company’s founding spirit of `doing what has never been done before.’ Nothing embodies this spirit more than passionate entrepreneurs who give shape to their ground-breaking ideas and introduce them to the world, without fear of failure. The First Flight platform and other Seed Acceleration Program initiatives accelerate and optimize this process. Sony itself originated as a start-up, and through the Seed Acceleration Program we are challenging ourselves to return to our entrepreneurial roots. At Sony we will continue to explore ways of delivering new, emotionally compelling experiences and enhanced customer value.

What you’re saying is you want Sony or maybe something like JDI to start a semiconductor plant? They really didn’t have any other choice of chip. What manufacturer actually took a step forward this year? Even as good as the S6 is in a couple of areas, it took a step backwards with waterproofing, sd, battery etc, and didn’t add anything new. This year’s a bust with all manufactures and might as well wait or save a couple of bucks and buy the previous generation. Except for the Z4 tablet that knocked it out of the park.

What if you just have an idea? I’d like to see the noise canceling used as noise suppression where all the frequencies are kept at a preset value eg. being able to go to a nightclub/concert and hear everything clearly, but at respectable level for those of us that want to save our hearing. Would also like to see the camera module set up for night vision and addition of laser measuring (distance/temp) on phones

i love xperia phone except their camera i dont like it. I just dont want sony to go down, already z4 is not selling well in japan their home country. no one will upgrade their z2 or z3 to z3+ its almost the same phone. There is a rumor sony could rebrand their xperia name maybe no more Z series for flagships ? z4 tablet is really good sony did awesome job with 810 how i dont know maybe its bigger in size so better cooling, larger heat pipe inside could be anything

i am looking forward for the mediatek device from sony aka lavender with x10 chip and 21mp camera and 13 front facing one with 5.5 display could be 2k but i hope its 1080p

How can you stop the production of a product when it’s already selling in the market? Are you responsible for the loss of money from the the millions of remaining Z3+/Z4 units? Are you responsible for the software updates to those people who bought the Z3+/Z4? Are you responsible for the consumers who are looking for the Z3+/Z4? Are you responsible of explaining to the media of why the sudden of the stop production?

It’s not as easy as you think, try getting out from your lalaland, and think of what you said please.

  • Great Dude

I think that this is a good project.
They are putting only few good small projects while big projects like the project Morpheus aren’t there.
These small projects are so in gray area in that a company will usually throw them away and not take the risk because they don’t know how much potency it will have and because they have little revenue.
Instead, these projects won’t be thrown away and the small fraction of people who are willing to pay for such a product will gain one and be happy about it.
IMO If Sony has small projects then let it sell as much as the consumers would buy.
    No shame on that

  • Abdul Ghani

    its just a troll XD

  • Ryan Kumar-jassi

Is that an iPad in the first pic at the top?

  • inspire

Dear Xperiablog, can you have some moderation so that one can enjoy the comment section and have some meaningful, fruitful discussion rather than reading out of context nonsense swearing from some guys here?
    Would be much appreciated!

  • BruceLeeRoyJenkins

Let’s not forget that these small products is a way for Sony employees to get more creative and be a little more free

  • BruceLeeRoyJenkins

Agreed, I wouldn’t mind having that E-Ink watch, but I don’t see anywhere to pledge money for it. No even sure if I can send money from the US

  • Alvin

Well this is new. Somebody has called himself a troll where every troll out there don’t

  • Alvin

    What an innovation.
People should also know that they started this flagship waterproof era, also the invention of SmartWatch, and much much more

  • Great Dude

Probably you can by contacting them http://support.sonymobile.com/us/contactUs/

  • Great Dude

Apparently you can’t send them money except if you are in Japan
I also went to their site and there they wrote : “Currently, we have only accept support from domestic.”

Of course that was according to Google translate :)

  • Kaarthikeyan Swaminathan

I second that. Its been a pain, in the recent months, going thru the comments section participating in good dialogues with ppl like ‘u know who’ passing out of context comments.

  • Reza

I’m the 3rd, totally agree with you guys.

  • Billy de Fretes

    i’m number four!

  • kaostheory

Mentioned it years ago along with more ps integration.

  • XperiaBlog

It is always tricky when it comes to comments. We’ve always pretty
much let everyone get on with it, assuming most people are capable of mature
discussions. Obviously, that’s not always the case with a minority of ‘trolls’
that look to derail conversations. We ask everyone to be respectful each other as
    a minimum.

A while back we stopped guest commenting and over the last
few weeks we’ve required all commenters to have verified email addresses. We’ll
do our best to warn/ban persistent offenders.

  • Great Dude

Then thanks to you there is ore PS integration than before ;)
BTW , I went to their first flight website (using google translate) and their they said that currently they aren’t accepting any project or idea outside of Sony.
